I am on 5.2 rooted. ,2017 model
I know it doesn't take ota updates anymore after a certain version if you are rooted.
I would like to update to the latest version and no longer be rooted.. there really just isn't much point. I don't find myself needing root for anything on the shield in particular.
It used to be easy to update.. you just updated and it would kill your root and then you would have to root all over again. Now though an ota will fail if the system has been modified in any way (aka root)... Even though I have a systemless root and I didn't flash recovery.. just loaded image for purposes of flashing root.
My first shield bricked while flashing a stock recovery... I did nothing wrong it just died.. could have been a fluke.. Nvidia was good enough to send me replacement tho.
I don't want to take that chance again.
Is it possible to do something.... That will enable me to take the ota and get a update and loose my root without having to flash stock recovery image?
I just hate to take that chance if I don't have to. I just really don't trust the flash of stock imsges with previous experience and one getting bricked in the process

Probably a fluke, easiest way I have found is developer image and flash with flashfire takes about 2-3 minutes
I cannot get FlashFire to install even after downloading from apkmirror. On 2015 16 gig Shield.

So i am relatively new to android and still have a few questions if anyone could help out...
I have rooted my s4 using cf auto root with out any issues other than i couldn't check the f.reset time box (not sure if that's unusual or not) so i then paid for and downloaded triangle away to reset the counter, now i'm rooted and back to official status, using nova launcher pro and able to receive OTA updates.
Currently haven't received the new update where i am yet (Australia) , the update which allows apps to be moved to sd and fixes a few other issues. Obviously i would like to get this update, I have paid for and downloaded mobile odin, i assume that when the new update is available i can download on my pc and transfer and install the file from my phone using mobile odin without restoring to stock? And once the update is installed i will need to root again?
I guess my main questions are, with the cf auto root am i able to install custom roms, am i able to update without losing the root, are their any available updates from other regions i can use without issues currently, i see a lot of talk about kernels and i am really lost when it comes to that as i haven't needed to change anything dramatic, it's all been pretty automatic, just want to make sure i'm not missing some important steps.
Thanks to anyone that bothers to reply.
First thing it sounds you have an I9505 so to be clear next time you better specify which you have mate
Second after rooting you wont have any official updates since phone is still rooted, instead download a rom and flash in CWM so of you dont have this recovery you have many options I recommend Philz....
3) you can get any firmware you like... as it goes for languages the guys already patch the roms well moat of them so that all languages are available so basicly any will do....
4) when flashing a firmware with MobileOdin you dont need to root again it has an option enabled by default saying to inject SU binary after each flash to be cool you wont have to REroot again

Yeah, soz, it's a I9505, so even after getting it back to official by using triangle away i can't get OTA updates? Cos before i used triangle away i checked for updates and it said "modified firmware, not able to update", now it's back to "you have the latest firmware available". Even If i was able to do OTA updates when available Would that cause issues, meaning i'm better off just doing a manual update now via mobile odin? Is the custom rom necessary for anything i'm trying to do, cos i'm pretty happy with just having it rooted and nova launcher. I haven't found anything i can't do that i want to be able to do yet. Thanks for replying.

I am, unfortunately, running on MF3 firmware still and have my phone rooted and "customized" (ie I have Titanium backup blocking a few files). I'd like to be able to take the OTA update so I can update my firmware which is still pretty outdated (Android 4.2.2).
What do I need to do in order to be able to take the OTA update and what is the best way to proceed? Will the most recent FW version allow me to obtain root permissions or do I need to do something "fancy" like use survival mode in SuperUserSU?
Let me know the best way to proceed when you get the chance. Thanks!

If you have modified or deleted any system files the ota will not work. The latest version, nl1, is rootable with towelroot. If the ota doesn't work then I'd flash the nb1 tar file in Odin, see the general forum, and then ota from there.

I'm sure I have at least frozen some of those files using titanium backup . . . What's the best way to handle it? Do a backup of my TB settings, unfreeze everything, then try to get the OTA update? I haven't even been prompted for an OTA in months and I'm assuming it's because I currently have root and have frozen some of those files . . . Do I need to remove root in order to get the OTA prompt or is it likely a result of me freezing files?
Thanks for your help!

If you try to OTA with root, it will get to about 30% and then fail because the update checks for root if it's anything like the at&t update. I suggest unrooting and going back to 100% stock before trying any OTA updates.

I'll try!
That file was probably in the top level of the Internal Storage folder. Also there may be better tools than that available.
I noticed when I downloaded the 3.2.5 bin file from Amazon's website and placed into my internal storage folder. When I tried to apply the update, it complained and said the update was older than the 4.5.2 (ugh) I currently have installed. When I looked again the file was gone. SO maybe the way to solve this is to undelete this file. Will try some more this evening. Good luck.

OTA downloads are stored in /cache. Obviously you won't be able to recover anything.
Also, SSH access is the equivalent of running adb shell.

That's what I thought. Anyway, there is no way to downgrade to any version below 3.2.8 when running version 3.2.7 or above without tripping the eFuse and bricking your device, so I'm SOL until another exploit is found... At least 3.2.8 is rootable.
I just got mine rolled back to 3.2.8 too, today.
Does that mean that I cannot install a custom rom now as this 3.2.8 version will not allow subsequent downgrade?

No, you can root it with Towelroot but you won't be able to install any custom recovery or ROMs until another exploit is found. I believe 3.2.8 uses the same bootloader as 4.5.2, which is why you're able to downgrade to 3.2.8 but nothing lower than that.

"Amazon support" isn't one person. The representative you talked with may claim that it's impossible (as do many others), but it does not mean that it's a uniform response; it all depends on who you talk to. From what I've read and experienced firsthand, it is well within their power to do so.
Amazon is most likely well aware of the flaws in their software, so it's obviously protocol to downgrade the customer to a patched firmware.

I recently updated to the developers preview of Fire OS 5.0 and I had TWRP installed and I was not able to downgrade using the ADB sideload method. So for people that have the same issue here is what you need to do to resolve this and get back to Fire OS 4.0
Summary:
Rolling back to Fire OS 4 is easy! Simply visit the page below and follow the instructions provided to complete the rollback form.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/html-forms-controller/wdp_gen_rb
Note: The rollback process requires you to provide both your email used to participate in the Developer Preview, as well as your device's DSN. Instructions on obtaining your DSN are included in the link provided.

No I had root on 4.5.4 with twrp and I did not have my nav bar so I decided to try to upgrade to 5.2.0 thinking I would be able to downgrade. I was stuck at this OS because I can't get into the stock recovery or twrp. So basically I need to go back to 4.5.3 to gain root and upgrade back to 4.5.4.

I'm guessing it will be 4.5.4, but if it's lower that would make getting 4.5.3 (and root!) much easier. Hope you can keep an eye on it and block OTA as soon as it comes through. thx.
This is directly from Amazon and the zip is signed. There is no reason it shouldn't work. I am just trying to let anyone in the same boat as me this may help them. No need to be rude.
I apologize if that sounded rude. Wasn't my intent at all. I assumed downgrade would be OTA, and it would help everyone if we can get the developer preview and then downgrade in the way you suggest to 4.5.3 or less.

Well, this is 4.5.3. I dd'ed from my recovery when doing backups. See if it works!
so after messing with this so much bootloader is locked again and I am not able to flash recovery via fastboot. Looks like I will need to wait until someone can root 5.2.0 OS. Unless anyone else has any ideas because I feel like I have tried everything.

5.2.0 can be rooted, but you'll have to start with a working TWRP, which means you already must have root. For independent 5.2.0 root, you may wait for a long time.
With fried recovery and no root, I don't think you are going anywhere, other than to Amazon customer service

Well I had TWRP and root beforehand. In fact SuperSU is still in the app drawer but it says the binary isn't installed. I can wait though I know I can bring this thing back to life at some point. I have a galaxy s5 rooted with CM12 on it so that will keep me busy while I wait.
Edit: Amazon is sending me a new Fire HD 7. Be here on Friday

Just curious what you told them? I am in the exact same place as you, but it was with my wife's brand new tablet from prime day.
Can someone please paste a link to the 11.0.4.4 global installation file. My Oneplus8 pro is rooted and as such I cannot download it from system updates. I tried to fastboot an unpatched boot but I couldn't get WiFi to turn on. Accordingly, I'd like an alternate download option for 11.0.4.4 global.
Being rooted should not prevent the update. Otherwise download "oxygen updater" from the play store.

In my experience being rooted does prevent updates especially if you've flashed the patched boot image to both slots. In the past I've had his name issue. I got the update to stick when I fastboot flash Boot the original stock boot Image.
Have not seen the full 11.0.4.4 global zip anywhere yet....
I uninstalled Magisk, took the update and then reinstalled Magisk before rebooting. Seems to have worked OK.

Tried that. No joy.

I tried that, but when I did I couldn't get wifi enabled. I tried to download on cellular but it repeatedly failed. I rarely use cellular and I only have 2gb/mo. (If it were stable I'd be fine.)

I think I'll just live with 2.2 until oxy updated has 4.4. From what I've read 4.4 doesn't really do much. OnePlus sucks anymore.
PS I was finally able to download 2.2 again and I install it (via system update) which got rid of root so I downloaded and installed 4.4. Haven't rooted it yet.

Please post here if magisk worked on 4.4? And where did you get the stock boot.img?

Yes Magisk works on 4.4. There's a 4.4 Boot image thread in the Guides. You should be able to find it

4.4 has improved my battery life somehow.. Seemingly a lot better than it was.
In regards to there updates, I'd say (if you're rooted or not) to use oxygen updater, it's an absolutely rock solid app.
Plus they tend to release way before OnePlus do for each device.
Installation isn't affected by root, simply disable your modules then when prompted to reboot just don't, click install to inactive slot and you're done.
If you've taken an incremental update then I couldn't help you, personally I'd only stick to full updates.
4.4 has definitely improved things for me.
I'm on BA /2023

I like Oxygen Updater but it is still showing 2.2. I downloaded that 2.2 to get rid of root then was able to download 4.4 from system update, now I'm trying to root 4.4. Fastboot boot isn't working for me now for some reason. I'm not sure those downloads labeled 4.4, IN11AA (2020 global) are for real. If anyone has a file known to work on this variety please share a link.

I have the BA model. So I can't help you there mate.
There were people flashing BA according to people in my thread, perhaps contact them via PM and see what they say.
Wasn't a big deal by all accounts.

Oxygen updater finally has the 4.4 11 AA. I have payload dumped it and tried to patch the boot.img but magisk is failing. I cannot seem to get the canary channel so I'm using the latest beta but it isn't working. I cannot believe that nothing is working for me. Has anyone else succeeded?

I've been on 11.0.4.4 for about a week now, but I did it using the OTA, not with the full upload. I've been doing it this way for a while, just like I did with my Pixel 2XL.
Anyway, I downloaded the full upload from OnePlus's page a few minutes ago to test it out, and I was able to patch the boot image after extracting it from the payload.bin using the latest beta magisk. I did it on my Pixel 2XL, that's really the only reason I keep that phone around now, besides it being a backup phone just in case my OP8P craps out.

Great idea! I never thought of patching the stock boot.img on another device. It worked and now I'm finally rooted. Thank you for sharing your idea! BTW my former phone was a Pixel2XL. Was that the best phone ever? Still is but I sold it when I bought my 8pro. Big mistake!
