Calling isn't working? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Every Rom I tried on my GALAXY S4, lately my calling hasn't worked at all on any of the Roms, I would open the phone app trying to call Voicemail and nothing happens, it doesn't ring or nothing just a long pause and a single beep?. I tried finding ways online how to fix it but so far no luck :-/, has anyone found a solution to fix it? Because Im actually so lost on what to do about it right now.

This happens when running the latest stock ROM? Phone shows the correct IMEI from the dialler?

Yeah like my texting and data works fine it's just the calling that doesn't work, and I'm just like lost now and ran out of ideas, like when I go in the settings and go under phone info and it shows I'm connected to mobile network and IMEI info is still the same from stock ROM.

I'm stumped. The sim is working since text and data work.
Is the phone being used with the carrier that issued the phone or was the phone purchased outright and unlocked?

It was originally by telus Canada variant, but recently in Canada they made it free to get your phone unlocked under certain conditions, so I called telus and they unlocked it for me to be world wide, because my phone is actually so simaler to the US and European variant, on how they are built so I Flashed TWRP GT-i9505 on it and now so now I'm running XOSP-UNOFFICAL-20180114-JFLTEXX and everything works except calling, right now that's how I'm responding to this thread is by mobile data.

Yes, the sgh-337m (Canadian variant) and GT-i9505 are very similar but the radio bands supported by each model is different. Maybe certain radio bands need to be unlocked or enabled for voice?
You could try this website to check compatibility with a stock i337m ROM: https://willmyphonework.net/
Edit: I just noticed you are in Vancouver. Which carrier is being used with the phone?

I am using Freedom mobile is my current service provider, not the biggest company but they are growing. OK I'll look at that link

Did you modify the radio bands to enable AWS for Freedom? I know they are expanding their LTE network to bring LTE to phones that previously worked on 3g only like the iPhone 6s a1688.

Modify Bands? May you describe what that is and how? Because I didn't modify anything all I did one day was Flashed stock ROM via Odin from SamMobile and ever since them my IMEI hanged or anything

Freedom frequencies aren't supported by the i337m. The freedom version of the s4 is the sgh-m919v.

What how is that possible I get mobile data and texting though? Because even In Stock ROM I'm able to call as well?

So your talking about Sgh-i337m right?

Just want to confirm that calling with a stock rom on freedom doesn't work but data and text does? If yes, that is strange that calling doesn't work.
Does calling work with another carrier?

No I mean when I ran Lollipop from SamMobile calling worked 100% same with texting and data, but calling doesn't work running custom Rom, it works for texting and Data but not calling.

That is strange. The custom ROMs are made for the jflte?

This is a screenshot of my device info and Rom and no its for the gfltexx

I just noticed now but in the screenshot of "mobile network state" that it says "disconnected" now I'm confused. About my phone is GT-I337M is the original model name.

I think it may be a kernel issue. Is the phone running the kernel included with the rom?

I never actually knew the differences were between a Rom and a kernel? For a while ithought they were the same, hold on I'll take a screenshot of it.

Phone can't make or receive phone calls on T-Mobile SIM but text/data is fine.

I recently got a Verizon S5 from a friend of mine to use with my T-Mobile SIM card. It had stock 4.4.4 with build NI2 so I rooted using the NCG stock and towelroot before flashing back to NI2. Everything worked as expected and I was able to make calls and whatnot.
Now I decide I want CM 12.1 on my phone and begin the process of getting BusyBox and SafeStrap installed. Again all is going according to plan including the backup of stock ROM.
I wipe and flash CM 12.1 and get into a boot loop, so immediately I wipe again and restore to my previous backup.
Now I can send/receive texts, MMS, and my LTE works fine; but I can't make calls.
I've gone through all the steps to enable T-Mobile LTE through the CA Settings and manually enabling Band 4, and don't think this is related, but it might be.
I've reset multiple times, tried flashing CM 12.1 multiple times, and now I'm back on stock Touchwiz and am ready to shoot someone.

You might try flashing the NI2 kernel and if that doesn't work, the NI2 firmware.
So I just got a pop-up wanting to know if I would enable global mode. It had a dialer app icon but it appeared while I was in the messenger app. I said okay and now calls work. The only place I can find global network settings is in the network settings, so if anyone finds this with the same error, try re-enabling global network mode.

Verizon uses CDMA technology. T-Mobile uses GSM. All non-USA part of world is GSM, so maybe phone has both so that it can be used outside USA, but you have to enable Global to enable GSM. (Verizon, Sprint, and one other USA carrier are the only ones in the world to use CDMA.)
hey just a tip. it has nothing to do with your problem (well maybe it does) and sorry if you already knew but i was very happy when i found out. T-mobile roms work on these phones. I use Alliance 4.4.2 rom from the sgs5 t-mo section. Flashed with safe strap and it works great. I was having major issues when using the VZW roms. Like phone wanting to dial *86 for my voicemail then hanging up my phone call, or getting the 1x symbol constantly while in a call or just after calls ect. Now all i need to do is figure out how to put T-mo 5.0 roms on this thing....mehhh... i'm sure there's a step by step somewhere I just cant find it. Hope this helps if not I'll edit and put a thanks or thumbs up or something.
Can we install a t-mobile rom (900T) and flash the radio specific to 900V back so that t-mobile wifi-calling works? Can someone answer if they have done this?
Also will the band 12 on this work with t-mobile's new 700MhZ?
Thanks.

It works fine i used the alliance rom but you dont need to flash the modem file, even the wifi calling is working but since t mo recognizes it HSPA+ as 4g but when you connect to an actual 4g it will say 4g lte but you cant connect to t mo 700 mhz as it doesnt support that frequenc

I am using am gs5 verizon on a gsm network with lte band 3 and i never had problems with calling, i suggest you look for an app called Advanced Signal Status though you will need root so that you can change between network types

I just read about this. According to this review: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2500353,00.asp
"It (Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy S7) has LTE bands 2/3/4/5/7/8/13/18/19/20/38/39/40/41. Samsung unfortunately removed key LTE bands for the other major US carriers—12 for T-Mobile, 17 for AT&T, and 25 for Sprint—to make it difficult to use this model elsewhere."
I doubt it was Samsung that removed it - more likely, Verizon had them remove the others. Just a guess, tho.
Is there an ELI5 version of this thread? What is the importance of knowing which "bands" are supported?

Using the phone LTE in other carriers. Carriers 'own' certain frequency bands which are used to communicate with your phone. Your phone and the tower need to be able to use the same frequency band in order to communicate.
Most phones work on 2G/3G world wide (except on CDMA carriers like Verizon, generally most phones don't use the tech/frequencies for verzion nor would Verizon allow then on their 2G/3G bands of they did). But LTE is new enough that most phones don't support the 20 odd frequency ranges used (2G/3G use less then 10 combined for most of the world).

The modem supports all the bands, Verizon disables it in software. What a bummer! I will suggest you to buy G950U or US cellular model.
Or flash the firmware of the carrier you want to enable the modem which has been successfully posted on a few xda threads and other sites. All snapdragon us variants can be cross flashed.

You'd have to check on the s8 forums. An s7 probably would as I think only the Sprint and tmo phones were simlocked. Not sure though as I've only had my ST phone and read the vzw phone being used on several carriers.

So are you saying that the actual bands are software based not hardware based. So all we have todo is flash the right ENG and ROM and wala I have right radios for my carrier?? US Based.
Yes, flashing the fw of the carrier loads the correct radio drivers. The radios are hardware based, but locked down by what the firmware has the instructions to look for and run.

Great explanation, I’m new to this stuff - we all have to start somewhere right?
So is root required to flash? The reason I ask is that I’d like to buy an S7 but I want to be able to WiFi hotspot tether without carrier provisioning and some versions of the phone allow it while I’m pretty sure others block that (like att)...By the way do you know which version would be best to flash to for WiFi tethering and ALL LTE bands made available? Thanks!

I use the hybrid rom that is loaded with vzw and debloated custom to my needs. It has tethering enabled. You'll just need to use root long enough to get the flashfire setup going and then once you're done it is unrooted. You'll have to check other threads regarding performance tweaks if you decide to stay rooted.

Using the engineering kernel for nougat you can achieve toy, but it's buggy and slow since it wasn't meant to be used for daily devices. That's why the hybrid ton was developed to show some root uses without needing to keep root, like removing bloat permanently or getting the tethering service setup.

FM radio for U996?

Anyone thought about doing a stock kernel for the US996 that enables the FM radio? I think there are some other libs needed too. I'm willing to test if someone can come up with a flashable zip for it. I'd build it myself if I had the slightest idea how.
Any ideas anyone?
Will your us996 unlock the software is us99610a ?? Are not used lg bridge check update ?? show (can not check the software version try again)
Thx
I have been trying as well with fm related files from tmobile based rom postings, but no luck yet. To answer hehelle, lg bridge reports it cannot check software. Hopefully it is due to no update and not fact that the phone is unlocked / rooted (cutting off all future updates).
Mine says software version US99610d, I've got the carrier unlocked version. Didn't come with FM radio installed. Updates says nothing new yet.

Same software version here and no FM radio. Also I'm missing the option to always hide my phone number when calling. From searching, I see that many of the carrier locked versions have this option. Any idea how I can get it on the US996? Will rooting the phone allow me to enable this option?
Just rooting won't enable that, I think. That said, I have that setting on mine and it works. I had to go into dialer settings ( from the dialer) and then try Additional settings at the bottom of the list. I had to go in and out a few times to get it to read, but it does work.

Really? I'm missing the Additional Settings. Does this have to do with not yet having a carrier? (I have no SIM card in my US996 yet. Haven't decided on a carrier.) May I ask what carrier and plan you ended up going with?
Yeah, not having a SIM card in would probably affect that. I'm on straight talk with a 'bring your own phone' ATT banded SIM. The rates aren't bad and it works pretty much everywhere. I got the unlimited plan.

Negative.
I have flashed this with stock rooted and now a deodexed test rom and can't get the FM radio to "turn on" - also the FM radio service crashes.
We need something more than the APKs flashed in TWRP. =(
Works well for me on LS997 model LGV20
I flashed my phone with this custom rom: https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/rom-ls997-stock-debloated-su-goodies-t3531923
then using twrp in recovery mode, I did 'install' and chose the fm radio zip in this thread.
After I booted the phone again, I can confirm the fm radio app starts okay, and the FM radio itself turns on successfully when I have my headphones plugged in. All looks great!
Thanks!

You do not have to ODIN back. It will update normally. It was pulled from a US Cellular Device which was sold unlocked. I have seen other posts with same problem.
Am I doing something wrong?
I have tried both Home CSC and Non-Home CSC and the Userdata file was in UMS field in ODIN.

I have not tried it on Sprint or Verizon I know it works on AT&T. i have ran both firmwares on My AT&T S8+ With no issues
As stated using the proper ODIN is important

I have the Verizon variant and downloaded the Canadian version, and flashed that over completely the regular CSC, not the home_CSC. This was using the prince comsey or whatever version of Odin, and I let it reboot after. During the setup I did the same thing the other guy mentioned where you only set a pin, and select yes to boot the device with your pin. Once I got through the setup I turned on dev mode, and flashed my stock FW, which was Verizon. I selected all files and chose the home_csc from the Verizon package along with the VZW AP, BL and CP files.
Flashed them all over and let the device reboot. Once it turned on it took a minute or so to get LTE and service in general but it worked.

Thanks so much for this! Just for clarification the Unlocked US Cellular version does not have Smart Call only the Canadian version does or am I reading it wrong? Just trying to figure out the difference and which one would be best for my G955U.
Thanks!

The Canadian one is the one with Smart Call
So this makes an att phone unlocked to any carrier?
So it makes it be just like this :

Same thing happened to me. Successfully flashed but when it boots it still is an AT&T. I have the AT&T version and tried the home csc. Everything passes but it doesn't work for me. Weird
I'm on AT&T and wondering which one is better to flash. Is the only difference between us unlocked and canada firmwares the smart call feature?

Just an update but I tried the Canadian one on my device using the home.csc. Notice it does not have a UMS. It worked! The Canadian version is super clean! I am on AT&T, besides for the known things like wifi calling. Are we missing anything by not using the US Cellular version?
Thanks again, it just seems like the US cellular version wouldn't take for me but I am now happy and bloatware free.

They both will work the same. On the US Cellular version I think you have to program the APN and it does not have the smart call feature. The Canadian version does

yes the smart call feature is the only difference is the smart call feature. there is no need to install 3rd party software to get caller Id for unknowns and it still detects spam

Tmobile radio on US Cellular S7 Edge?

I got a S7 edge US Cellular branded from Walmart.. It is UNLOCKED. I put in my tmobile sim, I get lte, but, signal strength is low.
Is it possible to flash Tmobile software on this phone? The reason is I am not getting any strong signals (inspite of it supporting all corresponding LTE bands from Tmobile). Has anyone tried?
what options do I have? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

US cellular is just G935U I believe. You can just download the tmobile firmware, stick it in Oden and press flash. I suggest you to try flashing only the modem from the T firmware and use 935U firmware for everything else.

I actually just flashed TMO version via Odin, so far, all seems to be working fine. Does the U version support HD voice/ VOLTE/ Wifi calling on tmobile?
If you flash the T-Mobile firmware then yes and if you flash the U firmware then No

Is your US Cellular G935U? I bought a used one/unlocked -not in Walmart though- and it shows G935R4. I guess I will brick my device if I flash the Tmobile firmware. The problem that I have it show 4glte and speeds are amazing, however there are no bars shown. When I get a call, it shows bars and makes the calls with no issues. SMS works great.

It is the same one I got from Walmart. I flashed the T-Mobile firmware and the phone rocks. It's a seamless process if you have some basic knowledge of flashing. I can help you if needed. Please let me know... thanks.

Thanks, I actually flashed the T-Mobile firmware and it worked pretty well. It failed when I tried to use an older version of Odin. Once you used the most recent one, it's flawless and with no issues.
