This is an alternative to plugging a USB cable between the two to transfer files. Like if your phone's charger port breaks.
On your phone use GooglePlay to install the app: "wifi file transfer" by "DNL Media UG" (I have only had success with this particular one for entire phone's memory.)
Shows entire phone's memory when you connect to PC ftp..
---> In phone's settings/apps/app:wifi file transfer, permissions, storage = yes - else can't see sdcard etc.
Connect phone to PC via wifi ( I connect phone to wifi from my router).
When you start the app, then tap START, it will give you an ftp address like eg ftp:// 192.168.1.3 :3332 (yours will likely be different.) I unchecked things like password.
Start your FTP file transfer program on PC - I use Filezilla in Ubuntu Linux. There are many good free ones for windows.
From the info you get from the phone app above: set settings in PC ftp program: eg: Host = 192.168.1.3, port = 3332 . Then tap quickconnect or whatever.
Move files either way.
This was tested on Moto G3.
Using an app like Mxplorer or ES-FileManager connecting to a shared drive seems much easier and straight forward to me.

This is stated to be an alternative to usb cable(which is easier).
If you're not using cable or wifi, how are you connecting?

He is considering FTP over wifi too, but using a file explorer instead of a dedicated application. Just clarifying
Personally, I too use a copy of ES File Explorer Pro (without the ads and crap) for FTP. Filezilla works excellently in both windows and linux, but I have set up a network location shortcut in windows for better explorer integration.

I jut played with it a bit, but I don't see how to connect it to a browser or rather ftp prog on PC. I wifi connect to router, and in ES I send, but of course it has no idea where to send it.
EDIT - if I poke enough things it gives me an addressort, but filezilla can't find it.

From what I observed, the 'send' option only detects other devies connected to the same wifi and running ES at that time.
Rather, you should swipe from the left, Network > Remote Manager > Turn on. Now either type the address in a browser, or directly in File Explorer (Windows Explorer) or any FTP program. The settings icon has the option to change directory (internal or external storage).

Is there some way to access the x10 though the computer to download pics that i have taken?
I have plug it into the pc and there is nothing recognized like the minisim 16g that is in it or the on-board storage.
I run win 7 so there's not much it misses.
I have been reading the forum for related stuff but coming up empty.
Ok i downloaded PC Companion I can access the phone, but still don't see the minisim, or pics that i took.
I suggest using an app called Wifi File Explorer or Websharing. Search those apps in the market. These applications will only work with wifi on. It will use your Wifi and allows you to browse through your SDCard contents through a browser. No need for connecting cables to your computer.
Instructions:
1. Start the app (Wifi File Explorer or Websharing)
2. For Websharing, press the Start button. It will give you an IP address.
3. Type that IP address on your computer in your browser.
If you want to view pics, I would suggest Websharing cuz it allows you to view pics through the browser and thus allows you to see which ones you want to download to your computer. Wifi File Explorer only gives you a list of files.
Thanks i will get to that right away.
In the mean time the place that i was looking for in showed up in PC Companion under File Manger. It open explorer and at first few times was not able to find the minisim. For some reason it showed up 20 minutes later under the file name DCIM.
I don't know why it didn't show but it does now.
But i am still going to try the programs.

You can also just use Mediascape and Bluetooth the files to your computer (assuming you have bluetooth on your computer.)
It's what I do... very easy, fast enough, and requires no set-up or typing after the first time.
Any idea on how to transfer files from PC to A500 without SD or Root? Thanks!
Why not use the included mini-USB cable?
Another option would be some kind of file manager. I use ES File Explorer. I can navigate over LAN to my laptop / desktop and grab files.
Dropbox is another option. Though you'd first have to send the files to your DB folder on your PC - this does have the added benefit of being able to get to those files anywhere you have a WiFi connection though.
File expert is nice. Plus it can stream media from your PC.

Dropbox
How about dropbox, then it's pretty much automatic after you save the file on the PC.

One thing I noticed is that some of the folders that appear on Root Explorer do not appear on my computer like the beautiful widgets folder.

vs. USB:
downloading files is much faster over wifi than USB, and there's no performance hit like there is with USB.
I can access my files from anywhere I have a data connection. it was nice the other day to think about an album i wanted to hear and download it over my work wifi
vs. Dropbox
no special folders to setup, you just browse the file structure on your server.
The only real issues I have with it so far are:
I can't set a default download folder on my A500. I'm hoping they fix this.
You have to kill the client to move files from the default download folder to say your external sd card.
Whats the best way of obtaining the files if you have external hard drive on a network? I've been told of several file folder managers, but have been unsuccessful in getting into my network.
You can accomplish this with tonido as long as your external USB drive is mapped to your pc.

Re. Dropbox
I agree, a way to change the default folder/location to an external SD card would be nice.
Also, a way to set a global 'hard download' option for all or a folder would be nice vs. the individual file(s).
For some of us without a full time 3G/Wifi connection I prefer to have my files synced and resident on the device.
Nobody using Acer sync? The client is already pre-installed on the Iconia, you just have to install Acer sync on your PC. Sync by wifi or USB on demand. Pretty easy to use. I also use remote web desktop app with nice drag and drop feature, websharing by NextApp and wifi explorer which give you more control on which folder to transfer files.

i'm still trying to figure out how to move music files around. I connect my tablet to my computer via usb cable. I put some music into the acer music folder and then look for it with the google music app and nothing comes up. But everytime I look at the music folder on the a500 using my computer the albums and songs show up. I can find the music on my computer with the clear fi app but when i click on a song to listen to it clear fi says it dosent support the file. Every thing I have has been downloaded to windows media player.
Hi,
Has anyone else noticed very slow USB file transfer speeds (like USB 1.0 ?) in Windows 7?
I have been copying movies and TV episodes to watch on the KF and was wondering if I broke anything by rooting etc... or if this speed was to be expected (seems ridicilous for modern hardware).
If this is a USB driver issue is there a workaround i.e. installing a different driver for the device in device manager?
Or alternatively an easy and FAST way to transfer files between the KF and Windows 7?
Thanks
This is a well known issue.
See here for the details: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amazon-kindle-fire-review,3076-11.html
Possibly can be fixed in a future update/mod as it's not a fundamental hardware bottleneck.
Anyway it's actually much faster to transfer via wifi! I use Dropbox to get files onto my Fire (it's an easy side load that be downloaded direct from the Dropbox website onto the Fire).
Do you know of any wifi file explorer options, i.e., use wifi to see folders on another computer for download?
Thanks.

I can see my network shares over wifi with Astro and with File Expert, both file explorers.
Dropbox is pretty handy too!
If you want to do it from the Kindle, you can point ES File Explorer (free) to your share. Use the LAN tab.
right - best choice - i use es file exlorer to stream from other devices (computer,nas,...)
with file expert you can activate a built in ftp or http server and you can stream from your kindle - really easy !
Hi All ,,, Is there ANY way that you can transfer files ,, mp3's ,
photo's , downloads ,,,, FROM the Nexus 7 TO a computer ?
Is there ANY way to do this , or APP to use
that can do this ?
THANKS for all replies ,, KZ ..
yep. just connect your nexus 7 to your computer with the included micro usb cord. when your computer recognizes the nexus 7, click on it to see all of your pictures, music and the like. other options include google drive for written stuff, or evernote for the same. anything you download on the nexus 7 is located in a folder called download, accessible once you connect it to your computer.
Connect the Nexus 7 to your computer with the supplied USB cable and it will show up as a media device, at least on modern operating systems.
I either use Dropbox (installed on both the PC and the N7) or the app ES File Explorer over our home WiFi, connecting to a folder on my PC I've named Nexus7 and share with anyone who logs onto as me. You just have to know the local IP address of your PC (and username and password, of course) for when you connect via the LAN view of ES File Explorer. ES File Explorer remembers the connection for subsequent accesses.
I don't really use the cable for anything more than charging.
try out airdroid.the best remote control&transfer app i have seen.

I'm partial to WiFi File Explorer. It's in the Android Market. It temporarily opens a web server on your device allowing you to navigate the filesystem. DropBox, Box, or direct cable connection all work as well.

How do I connect my Nexus 4 to a Windows PC, so as to transfer my files ? I cant use LG PC Suite V, even though its a LG device ! So my question is it possible to manage my Nexxi with a pc suite, Like I used to do it with my previous android devices ? :cyclops:
This is my first Nexus device(which is by far the super awesome device i have ever had), so please dont mind if I am missing something very obvious.
Just use a USB cable and connect your N4 to your windows PC. You should be able to transfer files using window explorer.
As far as I know all the suites you are talking about are made by the manufacturers for phones running their own UI's, Sense, TouchWiz, etc. I use Windows Media Player to sync music, photos and videos with my N4. You can also just drag and drop files into it if need be. While WMP doesn't quite do all that a suite does, backup is one thing, it is sufficient for what I need to get done.
If both the pc and cell are connected to wireless use airdroid. Cant get any easier than that.

Definitely airdroid, it works like a charm.

If you do a search on pdanet, you'll see it's an app that has almost every freaking driver imaginable.
Did it finnaly ! I could connect it VIA AirDroid with USB tethering ON. Just like wireless connection, Airdroid supports connection via USB too.
Actually you should be able to just plug it in and browse the phone through windows explorer (kinda like a usb hard drive). Dont think air droid is necessary for usb.
Especially since you have the option to eject it from your pc i don't think its a driver issue.
I once had a similiar issue to yours and what i did was go into settings > storage > the menu button (the 3 vertical dots in the upper right) > usb computer connection > and check MTP. For some reason it was not checked.

Yes, but the actually problem, some time ago I had installed the ADB drivers, thinking that I had to install some driver to connect my device. Yesterday, Saw that this caused the problem and neither the windows media player nor the explorer could browser through the phone memory.
After uninstalling that driver for good, I could connect easily, although it shows as a media device and I cannot get to see the list of folders in explorer, hence I started searching for AirDroid using USB. And Voila !!
So let me get this straight... I just bought my Nexus 4. The last Android phone I had was a Galaxy Nexus, and I could simply open Windows Explorer, and drag n drop any file I pleased. Simple.
Now with this phone, I can't do that. For example, a zip file, keep getting the error "Cannot Copy Item". This is with MTP on. I haven't tried the cable that the phone came with, but would that really make a difference? I tried different folders too.
Am I missing something?
UPDATE: So I tried a new text file, and it worked... My zip file was 11mb. I'm guessing it only recognizes certain file types in MTP? If so, guess I'll have to use something like AirDroid
I can see most of the things that are on my phone from the desktop, but it seems like a lot of stuff is missing...
I checked in the connection settings, MTP is selected, and on my desktop I selected "Show hidden files". I can access the N4 from My Computer, and I see a lot of folders, music shows up fine. But for example I can't see web pages that I've saved using OffBrowser. From the phone I can use the X-Plore app to view the files I have in the phone's memory, and from there I can see that OffBroswer has saved over 250 MBs worth of web pages. But when I try to drag-and-drop them to the desktop, Windows Explorer tells me the OffBroswer has 1 byte of storage in use.
As I said, I made sure to show any hidden files, so why aren't all of the files showing up. Anyone have any idea?
EDIT:
Same with the Opera browser. I've been saving a handful of webpages using Opera Mobile and I wanted to copy them onto my desktop, but they don't seem to show up in Windows Explorer, I just see a lot of TMP files in the Opera folder.
Screw it. I just use Airdroid now. So easy and great features.

this might help : To connect nexus 4 to computer via usb:
plug in the usb , connect usb to phone . it will display the charging icon as battery will be charning. Go to settings -storage -on top right you will see 3 vertical “square dots” click it will say “usb computer connection” then it will give you two options a. MTP and PTP. Simply select MTP and you are good to go. It will now show nexus 4 as a usb drive on my computer.
