Easiest Method To Install Any Custom Rom - Universal 7.XX/8.XX - OnePlus 5T Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey guys,
So recently I tried a few custom roms and noticed that the steps for all roms are slightly diffferent and that confused. Hence decided to try everything available and come to a easiest step by step conclusion:
Steps :
At the time of writing this guide I was on codeworkx universal TWRP running stock OOS 4.7.6 with Magisk 15.2. But the steps would work from any rom to any rom.
1) Flash codeworx universal TWRp from here : https://goo.gl/yXx2sK
2) Boot into twrp and using your pattern/pin decrypt data, yes thats the good part no matter if you are on stable or custom be it android 7.1.1/8.0/8.1 this recovery is able to decrypt all roms.
3) Make a nandroid backup and copy all contents of your internal storage to a pc/ choose the backup method of your choice.
4) Make sure you have at least 50% battery charged.
5) In twrp go to wipe . format data type yes and tick
6) Reboot to recovery
7) Perform a factory reset also wipe internal storage.
8) While in twrp copy the rom and firmware and gapps to your phone
9) Flash first the firmware if needed by the rom, then flash the rom and then gapps and then dm verity zip if needed by the rom. Wipe cache and dalvik. (note if you are flashing a stock rom please flash magisk and then make the first boot otherwise TWRP will be erased)
10) Boot into rom and set it up
11) Flash magisk or supersu if needed.
Heres a step by step video :

Please note : Do this at your own risk. I would not be responsible for any damage.
If I have missed any names please PM me I will ensure i add it.

Why all this codeworx TWRP hype all of the sudden? Bluspark has never let me down yet. What is the difference between the two?

It's good if you add DM verity to the list as "if needed" because certain custom ROMs require it.

I'll be looking at this thread at some point in the future. Thanks.

Anyone followed the above and have comments to make ?

after flash any rom black screen and blue LED

Kate CM13 Flash/Repair guide.

Dwl99 put a great guide together, the link is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/guide-redmi-note-3-special-edition-kate-t3523371
Another guide I found useful is http://en.miui.com/thread-363264-1-1.html
Full URL of original post is:
https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2566258&p=6&#r120
Now, I did it in a slightly different way, I prefer my way because I believe it is safer but here goes:
0. Update Miui to latest version Using the OTA update or Fastboot/Miflash method mentioned above. (I have a guide in this thread)
Once up to date:
1. Unlock the boot loader using the official method, this can take two 2 three days using en.miui.com/unlock/
Download the unlock tool. - Enable unlock boot loader options in developer options on MIUI (This can be done by tapping 10 times quickly on "Miui Version" in the about phone section of the phone. After this, go to additional settings >Developer options > enable developer options and unlock boot loader.
Next simply follow the guide on the MIUI unlock tool to unlock boot loader.
2. Flash TWRP ZCX Version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/zcx-twrp-install-twrp-flash-supersu-t3462448
This version of TWRP allows you to see and backup ALL partitions of your Xiaomi device.
Make sure you boot into this TWRP after flashing so it sticks (otherwise your phone will not boot)
Use the settings to back up ALL partitions to your EXTERNAL SD card. Keep that safe for the future in case you break your phone or lose imei or whatever.
I recommend transferring this backup to a PC or desktop. - Once this is done, you can breathe easy, you will always have a complete full backup of your device should you break it, you can relax in the future.
3. After backing up all of the partitions to the external SD card:
Download some files on https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2566258&p=6&#r120
The 4 main files you need are: 1 CM13 rom file, 2 TWRP Cofface Version, 3 the KATE version of CM13 firmware files (Whirlpool has this on his guide at the bottom edit) and 4 your favourite version of the Google apps @ opengapps.org
The version you will need is ARM64 version 6 for CM13.
Transfer these files to your phone external storage (We will be wiping internal storage).
4. Flash the Cofface edition of TWRP to your Phone either using Fastboot or TWRP.
The reason for this is I have found ZCX version, whilst awesome for seeing and backing up all parts of the MIUI phone, actually breaks non MIUI flashes because it is designed primarily to work well with MIUI Roms (hence we use them to back up)
All TWRP versions can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/guide-redmi-note-3-available-twrps-t3406708/
Once Cofface TWRP is flashed you can move onto step 5 – Flashing Roms.
*NOTE* I have read some people recommend ALKA TWRP to A) backup all partitions, but also B, to flash CM as it does all things. I am only sharing my personal experience of what I have done here, and Alka could work well, but I have not tested it.
All I can say is flashing CM13 with ZCX TWRP Broke my device. – But it was great for making backups.
5. Flashing. Here all you need to do is boot into Cofface TWRP and go to Wipe. Choose advanced options. And wipe ALL partitions you see (Don’t worry, Cofface will not let you wipe out your boot loader, Recovery, IMEI or anything else that is critical) – First flash CM13. Then next, flash the Kate CM13 firmware, and third flash Opengapps. 1 after another (I actually added all three zips in that order and let them flash all together)
6. Reboot and enjoy. You now have an Unrooted CM13 with google apps a working fingerprint reader working radio etc. Happy days.
7. – EMERGENCY FIX EMERGENCY FIX!!! – As I mentioned earlier, TWRP zcx broke my device when I flashed the Roms. I was facing a device decryption error and 0mb data problem.
I fixed this with this URL http://en.miui.com/thread-344450-1-1.html
There is a file there called TWRP_Kenzo_Fix.zip and a batch script that will restore your phone and rebuild the partitions and install Cofface twrp for you!!! So that’s a good option if you break it.
Hope that helps
ZCX-TWRP works perfect for CM-ROMs. I've flashed so many ROMs without any problem!

What's the REAL method to successfully install a working TWRP, root and custom ROM?

Hi All, I have been reading various threads here and searching on Google for finding a method that truly works for successfully installing a custom ROM, getting TWRP installed and rooting with Magisk. So far, all I have found are numerous and usually contradictory methods and about 7 or 8 different versions of TWRP (so which one is completely stable and working properly?). I have tried several methods over the past two weeks and none of them are working completely.
Sometimes, I'll get a version of TWRP installed, but then trying to reboot to recovery results in a "system has been destroyed" image. Or I'll succeed in getting a custom ROM installed, but Gapps will fail with error 20 or error 70 or there's not enough space on the system partition (and I'm just trying to install the Pico version). Even I double check that the Gapps version matches the ROM version I've used, but still get an error 20 displayed.
From what I had read on numerous threads, it seemed like CosmicDans TWRP would be the one I should go with. I downloaded both of his files (the fastboot image and the zipped installer) and fastboot his "boot-recovery.img" that was specifically for fastboot only and from that recovery, I installed his "TWRP-Installer-3.2.1-with-Tissot-Manager-2.5.zip". Everything appeared as if successfully installed as per the logs, but immediately upon attempting to reboot to recovery, I get the "system has been destroyed" image.
What I want to do is:
Get a working custom ROM (preferably Pie) installed
Install Gapps
Install a working TWRP (that will not display "system has been destroyed" whenever trying to boot to recovery)
Finally, install Magisk and root my phone
Can anyone suggest a site or link or a post somewhere that would explain everything correctly and is actually working? This has been a very frustrating experience. I'm almost sorry that I even bought the Mi A1. Never had any problems installing custom ROMs or rooting the OnePlus devices. All I'm left with currently is an expensive paperweight.
Thanks so much!
Cheers
From your description, I'm certain that you do this on a Pie stock rom right? the installer never work on Pie stock and will cause system destroy. Just hotboot TWRP. And for the Gapps, I think it's due to the time you install it. From my experience, install Gapps after rom and before Magisk usually work. Install after magisk or custom kernel will somehow cause the same issue that you described.
Oh, in case you want to install LineageOS, you have to come to the LOS16 thread and download the TWRP from there, it's the only TWRP that can install LOS16.

Thank you for your reply. When I first started the process to change to a custom ROM, I was on stock Pie. But one of the times I was wiping the device after one more problem, I accidentally also wiped Internal Storage as well. I didn't have much there since I had already backed some things up in advance. Now it's virtually empty. The steps I take are:
1. Hotboot TWRP
2. Install Custom ROM
3. Hotboot TWRP again
4. Install Gapps
This is where I usually have some problem. It's the process of installing Gapps that creates some error.
I also did attempt to install LineageOS 16 using the TWRP recovery that was linked in the post. Follow the instructions precisely I believe and now when it's time to install Gapps, I get error 64. I can't understand why. I am attempting to install "open_gapps-arm64-9.0-nano". This should be compatible with the Mi A1 with LineageOS 16 from what I am able to tell.
No matter what TWRP version I use, no matter what custom ROM I try, no matter what steps I take, there is always some issue that prevents me from completing any installation. But the abundance of so many conflicting posts don't help either. One post will state to use a specific TWRP and certain steps; another post will suggest completely different steps using another TWRP; and yet another post will provide different steps still. In some instances, there will be steps listed in the script on the phone regarding the next steps after the ROM installation that are completely different then the steps provided in the post for that ROM in the forum.
It would just be tremendously helpful to get some instructions that actually do work. As of now, I'm about ready to dump this phone in the trash bin. It's horrible. I can't even tell if it might be decent eventually since I never can get anything installed.
Thanks again for your reply Never_Sm1le.
Cheers.
There is no permanent TWRP install for android 9 on MiA1 as far as i know.
Hotboot works just perfect.

Your reply makes me want to stay on LOS 15.1 even more. So many weird problems happen in LOS 16
I followed all the instructions of Resurrection Remix and TWRP is installed and magisk works perfect.
Hello friend, I am currently on Lineage OS 16.0 with Magisk, Opengapps and TWRP installed. I can boot to recovery with no problems at all; in fact, I used the flashed TWRP to install Magisk.
Here are the steps I took:
Download the TWRP boot img and TWRP installer by CosmicDan (Link below)
Copy the custom rom ZIP, TWRP installer, Magisk installer and Gapps into your SD card
Reboot your device to bootloader
Boot into TWRP using
Code:
fastboot boot boot-recovery.img
do NOT flash via fastboot
Go to Wipe>Advanced Wipe and wipe System, Dalvik, Data, Internal Storage
Press the home button and proceed to flashing the custom rom ZIP
After flashing, reboot to BOOTLOADER then do step 4 again
Flash Gapps, TWRP Installer, then Magisk Installer. You should flash TWRP first before Magisk
Reboot to system and you're good to go
Note that if you are installing Lineage OS and wish to receive nightly OTA updates, having an installed TWRP as your recovery might result in a bootloop after updating. Also, if you want to manually flash the nightly update, you need to boot to the TWRP variant of @flex1911 as flashing lineage using other TWRP will result in an error. I suggest not installing TWRP when using Lineage OS.
(Source: [ROM][OFFICIAL] LineageOS 16.0 for Xiaomi Mi A1)
Regarding your problem with flashing, try to check which slot you are currently in by going to TWRP>Reboot. Keep in mind that when you install a rom, it will always be installed to the inactive slot. For example if you are in slot A, your rom will be installed in slot B. After rebooting, your current active slot will be where the rom is installed. When installing Gapps or any addons, check the slot first. However, when flashing TWRP installer, it will patch both boot_a and boot_b and this is the reason why you need to install twrp first before magisk as TWRP also modifies the boot image.

Bootable TWRP
TWRP Installer
(Both files by @CosmicDan)
Cheers mate!

Thanks for the lengthy reply. However, those steps do not work as you have described. Since, if I wipe Internal Storage (as per your step 5), I just deleted all the files I copied previously in Step 2. What I did, was wipe everything, *then* copied all the files and tried to install. As soon as it try to install Gapps, I get Error 64 again. I am absolutely using "open_gapps-arm64-9.0-nano" and it always fails. I have attempted 11 or 12 times already, using different slots, using different dates of "open_gapps-arm64-9.0-nano" and ALWAYS Error 64. I don't know any other version of Gapps I should be trying. The arm64 versions never will work for me.
I give up. I'll just have to stick with stock ROM. No custom ROMs will work for me no matter which one I use or which version of TWRP I use. I already wasted too much of my life with this garbage phone.

Hi,
Which version of TWRP did you use? There's too many. I don't know which one is considered to be the right one.

Copy the files to your external SD card not internal storage. But if you don't have an ext SD card, don't wipe internal storage.
Also try to check if system is properly mounted when installing gapps.
May I ask what custom rom you are trying to install?
I suggest you try Pixel Experience as it already has a builtin Gapps so you dont have to flash opengapps.

How to install ANY CustomROM on OnePlus6T from OOS/CustomROM

So, I searched the internet for a method to flash a CustomROM on the OnePlus 6T. But somehow none of them worked, so I worked on one myself that at least works for me.
There are 2 methods, use Method A if you don't have a custom ROM installed and still use OxygenOS. Use Method B if you are using a custom ROM and want to have another one:
Method A: From OxygenOS to CustomROM
1. boot in twrp
2. in twrp, do a factory reset
3. flash latest oos zip(flashable ota, link will be below)
4. flash twrp installer zip(i recommend mauronofrio´s twrp, link wil be below)
5. check current slot, then reboot in twrp
6. check if slot changed, then do a factory reset
7. flash latest oos zip
8. flash twrp installer zip
9. reboot recovery, and check if slot changed
10. factory reset
11. flash custom rom zip
12. flash twrp installer zip
13. reboot twrp(check current slot)
14. check if slot changed(if yes:it worked, if no:repeat)
15. additional: flash magisk&gapps
then, your rom is ready to use
Method B: From Custom ROM to another Custom ROM
1. reboot to twrp
2. in twrp, do a factory reset
3. then select advanced wipe: wipe system, cache, data. DON’T WIPE VENDOR
4. flash custom rom zip
5. flash twrp installer zip
6. check which slot you´re in
7. reboot twrp
8. if slot changed, everything worked
9. flash gapps and magisk if you want
then, your rom is ready to use
So, I hope I have spared you many problems and wish you much fun with your Devices.

Some of those steps are unnecessary. Like doing a Factory Reset each time you boot to TWRP as that will mess up your Encryption. And in Method B, you mention to Wipe System. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WIPE SYSTEM ON THE 6T. IT WILL MESS UP YOUR DEVICE. This is the method I use to flash ROMs.
1. Boot to TWRP
2. Flash the latest version of Stable OOS for your Device and latest TWRP Installer for your Device. -> Reboot to Recovery.
3. Flash the latest version of Stable OOS for your Device and latest TWRP Installer for your Device. -> Reboot to Recovery.
4. Flash ROM + TWRP ,Format Data (Go to Wipe, in the lower right corner Format Data, type in 'YES' and hit Enter) -> Reboot to System
5. After first Boot, You can Reboot to Recovery & Flash Magisk (Optional).
These are for EvolutionX that has Gapps built-in so you don't need to flash Gapps. Otherwise you can Skip the Format Data after ROM flash in Step 4, Reboot to Recovery, Flash Gapps and then Format Data. I use these and they have worked flawlessly for me. Also when switching from one AOSP based ROM to another, it's generally recommended to flash OOS Before.

I need help to install crDROID v5.12

Hi everyone.
I'm trying to install crDROID v5.12 but I don't speak english very well and I never installed custom rom before
My build is A2017GV1.2.0B12.
I unlocked my bootloader, installed twrp 3.1.1.0 and did a backup using axon7toolkit so this is cool but now i'm stuck cause i don't know what i have to do and I don' want to do bad things.
So if someone could help me it will be very nice.
Thanks a lot.
Here are the instruction :
0.suited twrp ( i'm using twrp3218), oreo bootstack (i'm using universal one) of your choice...you know the drill
1. Copy crDroid zip, 9.0 gapps ( i'm using micro) zip to your device
2. Boot into twrp recovery
3. Wipe cache, system, vendor & data
4. Flash ROM
5. Flash gapps
5a Reboot and setup phone
6. Flash Magisk 20.4
7. Reboot and enjoy !
It's okay.
I tried many things and I finaly installed CrDroid without to brick my phone.
I don't know if I did it well but that looks good.
Now just to know, about bootstack : I take the one on download center by raysteff66 in section TWRP flashable Bootstack named A2017G-O-B02-bootstack.
It's a good choice or there is better bootstack ?
And for further any advice, things cool to do to improve experience with this fresh rom?

As you all may know, CorvusOS is one of the most popular custom ROM At the moment, and the developers known as "Tipz Team Builds" Have made it compatible for J7 Prime!
(IMPORTANT!!, There are currently lots of bugs in CorvusOs, so i recommend waiting for a stable release, if you wanna install it then im not responsible for any damages done to your phone, i warned you!)
(Please as always take a nandroid backup of your phone as with any other custom rom installation!)

Installation :
*I cannot stress this enough, Please always take a nandroid backup of your phone when installing a custom rom!*
1. Download all of the above
2. Boot into custom recovery
3. Wipe : Cache, Dalvik Cache, Data, System, Vendor *DO NOT WIPE INTERNAL STORAGE*
4. Extract the CorvusOs*version*.img.xz as .xz
5. Flash the extracted CorvusOs as system image
6. After flashing CorvusOs, Mount System and vendor, *If you can't mount it, Reboot into recovery again*, After mounting Flash Treblue
7. After flashing treblue Flash NikGAPPS
8. Wait for it to finish
9. To confirm it works reboot into recovery and look at terminal, it should say something like "Custom ROM (TREBLE) CorvusOs"
10. Now reboot into system and enjoy!!
After installation it should reboot a few times, let it rest for 5-10 minutes
Credits are given above, please give me suggestions on how to improve my guide!
Also, if you are gonna update to the latest version, do not download ones with "gapps" in their name, also the file must have either vndklite or nonlite on the file, so it looks something like this
CorvusOs-*version*-treble-arm64-vndklite/nonlite-*DATE OF RELEASE*-Beta/Stable-Official-0000.img.xz
