My needs:
- Good Camera, esp for indoor and low light use. Need a good manual mode. Portrait mode not important, need to shoot mostly landscape pics.
- Good build quality
- Long lasting battery (~1-2 days for light use)
- Light user, no gaming or other heavy apps
The camera of Mi A1 vs Zenfone 3:
- A1 = dual set up vs Zenfone = single 16MP camera
- A1 = no Laser autofocus, no OIS
- Zenfone 3 = Sony IMX 298 sensor (same as on on oneplus 3t), not sure about A1 sensor quality.
- Maximum shutter speed : 0.067s for A1 vs 32s for Zenfone 3
- Zenfone 3 has a full featured manual mode (more options for shutter speed, WB, ISO etc)
Zenfone 3 comes with a full glass back, and is now more than a year old. The price is half of the launch price. What would you advise. The mi A1 or the Zenfone 3?
go for the A1. some users of ZF3 are having camera issue like blur camera or not focusing.
The camera is not great you need full light. The dual camera is more of a marketing gimmick.
Battery is also not great but does well for the capacity.
For battery I recommend the Lenovo P2 although I have no info on the camera.

thanks for that info, I went thru the Asus forums and like you said, users have complained of camera focus issuing. Are ther any known issues in the Mi A1 that I need to be aware of?

Both are 5.5" the size difference is minimal. Slightly thicker due to the monster 5100mAh battery
Expandable memory up to 256mb and HD video. The main drawback being that pesky Lenovo software but community is active on here.
If you take indoor photos, don't buy Mi A1. It has awful low light performance (and I mean awful. The pictures come out grainy. However it has slightly improved by Oreo update). The daylight photos come out amazing though! Landscape photos are amazing.

Thanks! Zenfone 3 is better IMO. In A1, images are blurry but in Zenfone 3 images looks sharp and better.
You can get sharp images with the a1 but there is kind of stabilisation so it's hard and videos are better in zenfone 3 too, if you switch to night mode in the zenfone the Image is very bright and pretty clear but night mode on a1 does nothing lol

Hello! Xiaomi Mi5s Plus was launched recently and here are the features: 5.7-inch FHD Screen, Snapdragon 821 CPU, 6GB RAM, and Triple cameras with two rear cameras (source: http://www.chinaphonereview.com/xiaomi-mi5s-plus).
The dual rear cameras is a unique characteristic in which it features a 13MP colored camera and a 13MP black & white camera. I'm not sure how this would translate. But I'm certain the 6GB RAM and Snapdragon 821 processor would definitely provide an excellent performance.
Any thoughts on this smartphone?
If a decent developer community forms and this gets the ability to work on Verizon then I'm sold. But I have to hold out hopes that the Mi5 progress keeps advancing and can easily translate to this device.

Be careful, the mi5s plus cameras are old sony imx258 and not the new imx378 on the mi5s. Also the mi5s plus lacks of ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

Yah, they gimped the plus so much.. if you like larger phones, neither are good buys. If the plus had 2 x imx378 and ultrasonic, best phone in the world easily, by hardware.
The pixel phones use the imx378, I believe, and the pixel is rated best camera phone by DxO (take with grain of salt as they're apparently biased), but it still shows the prowess of the imx378.
Would the dual rear cameras make any difference in terms of picture quality? How can the additional black & white camera help?

Well, sadly enough that the imx378's sensor is large and I assumed that is why the dual camera setup with that sensor is not achievable.
Same goes to OIS, most probably due to sensor size issues. (Pixel phones have no OIS thou)

From what I've read, but I'm not an expert, the B&W camera should be capable of capturing more light.
So combining images from both cameras it should capture better pictures on low light conditions.

I have it and for me there's 2 things that I don't like. MIUI 8 , I'm a stock Android guy I hope somebody bring cm or something like this to this mobile and the other thing it's the camera, it's a camera for me from the beginning of 2015, that perform well in optimal light conditions and in low light even with the stereo option it's not very well.
Conclusion, I'm not a photo guy so there's no problem but I can't support miui even that it runs fast in this mobile. So until we have some development to this mobile I'm going to stay whit my axon 7.

Thanks for this amazing contribution! What do you think abt the pics on each rom?
Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Xiaomi Mi 5X come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
anyone can share their photos? How's the camera performance?
I have this device for testing purposes.
Can tell the camera is not that good. Pics are blurry and HDR mode is not on point.
Selfie cam almost does a better job than dual lens.
I heard and saw all kind of stuffs regarding the camera on reviews, from opinions (and photos and videos) where you can see the camera sucks to others where you see a great camera quality. This obviously will depend as well on the experience of the user.
I specially saw the camera seems to be very bad when trying to capture objects in movement.
It would be good if experienced people could share objective opinions of the camera on all the conditions.
Let's say the quality you get is absolutely random. Some shots will be good, others bad... it's mostly average.
Overall there's a lack of sharpness.

I just got my MI A1 as an upgrade for my 4 years old Nexus 5 daily driver. First impressions in Daylight the MI A1 outperforms the Nexus 5, but in low light the lack of OIS and relatively small 1.25 um pixel size means the A1 struggles a lot. Even getting a sharp focus is slow comparing with my Nexus 6P which has laser autofocus.
In comparison my Nexus 5 has OIS and 1.4 um pixels, and my Nexus 6P has 1.55 um pixels.
Taking into account the cost of the MI A1 however, this phone is a tip top performer and I have no compliants for what I paid. Very happy with it.

Yeah, acceptable but not tip top performing.
I mean, the Mi 5X/ Mi A1 is good for taking photo of people, but average quality is poor and outdoor result like landscape with HDR definitely bad. In HHT the camera sucks.
bad really bad camera

Me too
I kinda strugle there, the only bonus the 9T Pro would bring is the SD 855 and the higher battery charging as far as i know, and the included charger doesn't support it.
The 9T on the other hand has a new very power efficient (as far as ive read) SD 730 which will mean much longer battery runtime.
So i need some time there.

But the Mi 9T Pro has a Super Amoled screen which uses less power than just an Amoled screen, so that may make up for some loss of power from the chip.

Yes you are right. That's why the 30FPS vs the 60FPS.
The K20 pro is launching next month in India and they don't have a mi 9 so nothing to worry about from Xiaomi's part
However the global market has a mi 9 which is just 3 months old. My guess is there'll be at least another 3 months wait for the pro varient.
Mi 9t pro is in 3 month an old phone. IMHO a Bad decision to release the non pro first.
Finally, Dxomark have a full review about us K30 Pro /Zoom. Yes, Zoom is not exactly the same as K30 Pro/Poco F2 Pro, but almost the same (changing telephoto with macro and OIS)
https://www.dxomark.com/xiaomi-redmi-k30-pro-zoom-edition-camera-review/
No bad after all.
I agree that the ultra angle is the weakest point and that in night mode it could be squeezed a little more. Even so, it is surprising that if it were valued only in a still image, it could possibly be in the top 5.
I think that there is still room to earn the odd extra point with future updates, there are defects that are solvable by software, such as smoothing and loss of texture on some occasions, or even slightly improve the automatic parameters for the ultra-wide angle
In the video section the F2 Pro should lose some point due to the lack of OIS, but in its favor it must be said that EIS does an exceptional job
What do you think?
Yeah that was nice news but would be nice to know how this Poco F2 Pro will get scores

Similar. Poco lack of Tele lens but Macro lens is almost the best in his class. OIS could make some point on video, not to much. So final score should be very similar.

My brother have a OP8 Pro, and honestly, my Poco make in general better shots and videos (in Stock camera), with GCam are a lot of better (I personally like the more "sharp" of the GCam, although I admit that this is more a matter of what one likes)
I have a good friend who always repeats the same thing. The camera of course matters, as does the software. But more than 50% is still the one behind the camera. Automatic modes are good for taking quick photos and not worrying, But if you want an exceptional result, manual mode is a must to have, and of course knowing what you are doing.

Ofc it matters who is behind cam but my opinion is that software is most important in cameras. Google is good for that. You can put what camera sensors you want and what photographer to use it but if software is ****, results are ****. And nowadays its very often that normal users are testing the software but i must say that if you clean lens and its sunny day, and you take photo with poco f2 pro, you get very sharp results. but let see what gcam brings in future..
EDIT: stock cam i mean, please take shots and compare it. Gcam is not better? zoom and look details..
Brighter is stock cam and darker is gcam latest urnyx.
Gcam on K30 Ultra?
ok, so K30 Pro Zoom scored high, has OIS, and has the 865 which means it should be able to use Gcam if I can source the Zoom version of the phone? But the K30 Ultra has Mediatek 1000, which means no Gcam right?

IMHO, it seems that stock camera is a bit bluffed by the darker zones of the centre, while the Gcam seems more indifferent to that zones.
This can happen also on SLR cams.
Urnyx is now making a crowd funding to get a poco F2 and improve his Gcam.

I love Nightshots, and i have a huge gallery with only night/Sky shots. I assure you that it has nothing to envy to the "premium" range terminals. In fact, for me, in night photography (on this device) there is only one small problem, and that is that the glass that protects the lenses is very prone to causing flares when you have a couple of bright light sources and you place one of them in the center. Luckily it can be easily avoided the most time.
As a note, the vast majority of my night photos are handheld, using only the tripod with 2+ seg exposures, generally if I want to take astronomical, or more artistic photos in quiet environments
This doesn't mean much. The camera optimization is different amongst the Mi series, the Redmi series and the Poco series. It seems like the Redmi team did a good job on optimizing the camera on the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom, unlike the Poco team on the Poco F2 Pro.
