Great, instructive video! While I may disagree with the need for more saturated colors (I like sRGB from graphics work and comparing real world colors to what i see on the screen) the black issue was annoying me. This definitely helps with clipping.

What color mode was pixel in for these settings
Ok, I was suspicious at first, but I bought the app, and tried this video.
I will see tonight how it looks like with my usual reddit usage, but damn, it seems like black crush can be fixed with software after all ? Who would have thought.
Grats on the video !

If I'm not wrong many Android blogs already pointed that out. Google just needs to release an update and the screen can get almost perfect.
Awesome work! Looking good so far. This along with the touch issue being fixed by a user makes my phone perfect!
Does the color profile in settings matter when it comes to the OPs settings?

Nice, tested and noticed it looks much better but had issues with my camera app so had to disable.
Issue: Lag when Auto-Rotate in the camera app and focussing. It is almost like everything is getting redrawn on the screen.

Is that necessary in order for your settings to work or if I switched from saturated which I don't like, would I then need to figure out my own settings in Screen Balance?
I find saturated too cartoonish.

Use the color mode you like, then use the strength slider in Screen Balance to fix the crushed black levels. Make sure to retain true blacks. Then find an 18% gray image and adjust the RGB sliders to set the color temperature to something you prefer. I find that it's best to compare it to a screen you like.
It would be great if someone could make a KCAL profile (for people that have a kernel supporting KCAL)
Yeah that would be spectacular to have a KCAL profile.
I believe black crushing is worse on the smaller pixel 2. Mine is garbage. No matter what settings I use stock and with the balance app. The app hides crushing I could see before but brings out other crushing that I never noticed before. Lose lose for me. Easily worse then our 2 xl's(which were returned due to dead pixels).
Anyways good vid.
Do we have any suggestions for the regular Pixel 2?
Someone wrote that this app makes the phone run hot. Any issues regarding it or battery?
I'd like to see a Kcal profile as well. Also, did somebody here calibrate their display to a D65 whitepoint? Google's using a D67 stock, which is way too bluish for my taste (I'm used to sRGB calibrated displays on my laptop and desktop).
What about these settings?

You also just made the (common) mistake of calling Samsung's displays oversaturated, when it's very well known that you can go into display settings and change the color profiles. They have very good sRGB calibration mode, and have had it in their phones for years. In fact, they had the most color accurate displays for a long time, since the S5 came out (Note 4, S6, Note 5, S7 and Note 7 were all the most color accurate displays on the market when they came out).

You're right. I should've said their default settings in the video. I haven't had a Samsung device in a while.

When I read in bed in the early morning darkness, it doesn't hurt my eyes. Works especially well with the Moto display feature that reduces blue light whenever activated.
Blue light filter is a bit more mild than what I've used on other devices, but I think I prefer it that way, cuz I don't want my image to look perma-orange.
Minimum brightness is very good. Easy to read at night without hurting my eyes.
Leftmost ~25% of Brightness Slider Ineffective
This thing doesn't go nearly dim enough. As stated in the title, the slider seems ineffective at all when sliding down to below 25 or so %. Lame.

Turn off auto-brightness. The auto scaling will only go so low if it thinks the room is lighter than you want. When set to manual, the brightness goes very low.
Thanks. That helps a little, but still doesn't go as low as I'd hoped. Pretty sure with my old Nexus 6, I could get it so low I couldn't even read it. With this, the lowest is still not low enough.
to get the screen dim the way I like, I use the "screen filter" app.
As for the night mode, the screen on the x4 has a bit of a blue cast to my
eyes so I just run the night mode all the time. The whites are a bit orangeish
but I'd rather see that than a blue cast.
Now if only I could turn of the notification icon for that and
everytime i unlock the x4.
Great display.

Buggy Update
After the update last 25-10-2018, the contrast of my games became darker. It seems that my games turned darker compare to pre-update. Also there are some instance that my games are disappearing when I'm in shark mode.
I think the brightness is great as well. I have it under 50% and it's still brighter than my Pixel 2 XL at 50%.
You know the brightness curve is different on the Pixel phones with Android Pie than other phones right? It's a linear curve in brightness now. So 50% is truly 50% of the displays capability. It's been measured around 480-490 nits maximum so 50% is around 240-245. Can't say the same for non-Android Pie phones. They would hit 50% brightness at a lower setting. That being said, the Black Shark Helo is rated a lower 430 nits at maximum.

Hello, I have recently bought the Motorola One Action at Amazon Spain and I really love the phone except that I find the screen brightness to be very low and dark. When comparing it to other phones it only becomes more obvious that the brightness is super-low. The phone only has an acceptable brightness at 100% and I don't think that's normal. I read on various websites that the brightness of the phone with full white screen and with Max brightness should be 459 cd/m² and while testing it with the light meter I'm getting 360 cd/m²; at maximum... Is it possible that I got a defective unit? Could it be a software issue?

Did u try to disable the adaptive brightness?
Yes, it is disabled.
In my opinion Minimal brightness is way too high. Cant complain about maximum brightness.
I also bought from Amazon Spain and the same problem. What was your solution if I may ask?
Perhaps everything could be solved with a custom rom
Running EvokutionX GSI and minimum brightness is perfect. Looks like Moto is restricting this on official firmware for reasons unknown...
guess we need a maximum brightness thread also. I live in the sunshine state, and find almost all phones aren't bright enough on a full sun day. This one included. But, as far as the minimum brightness is concerned, it is quite acceptable even in the darkest room. I do run the dark mode also.
I have been playing with the brightness levels, adaptive, etc, etc, etc and I have noticed that my Note 8 is brighter or "easier to read" on a bright sunny day.... Anyone else notice that this screen isn't cutting it or is hard to read when the ambient light is really bright?
Exactly the same observation from me. The Note 8 display is definitely better.
Is it only with auto brightness? I'm wondering if they made the lighting less aggressive to help battery life with the 120Hz screen and all.
In manual mode, maxed out brightness, the Note20 Ultra should smoke your Note8.

With adaptive brightness on it is brighter than the Note 8 (both phones sitting with a torch shone in the sensors) however in normal use on full brightness the Note 8 is definitely better.
I feel they limited the max manual brightness on the Note 20, probably for battery life and to prevent damage/burn in with the display.

I just played with a Note9 and the Note20 Ultra was CLEARLY brighter in manual mode at max brightness. It wasn't even a competition. So I doubt the Note8 would fare any better. I wonder if yours has an issue of some sort.
heads up, you may have to first activate "Performance Mode" under the battery settings. Once you apply there is also an option to keep brightness neutral, add 5% or 10%. As a Note 8 user remember activating this long ago then reverted back to "Optimized" while keeping the brightness as is.

I think the same as Pixel 4.
It's ok. But I wouldn't mind having even a bit less brightness.
White backgrounds with night light still kill my eyes in the night.
At least smooth display goes forced automatically at low brightness. (Unlike the smaller Pixel 4 where I had to force it manually to have 90Hz at night). So I don't need to enable developers settings anymore. (Note this last paragraph doesn't apply to old 4XL users. Just to old 4 users).

Minimum brightness is acceptable, and I use Halo app to lower the brightness even more.
However, at minimum brightness, text and grey objects start to get laggy when scrolling. I think it's an OLED issue in general, but I'm not sure.
I use a blue light filter app to lower brightness even more at night at a set time plus turn the blue light filter on. I know pixel 5 has this feature but not as effective with the app I use.
