When I try to charge with phone off the screen stays black but it charges. When I turn it on the screen also stays black but after it boots I can press the power button and the screen is on and operable as far as I know (has frp on atm). Has anybody experienced something similar?

warranty
If you asking warranty ends in march. However I don't know if warranty void is triggered because when j try to go to download mode it's all black.
Contact samsung official warranty, your display seems faulty

A possible cause is a loose connection between the d-pad and the screen. That's the one that has to be absolutely level and neither over nor under tightened - also insidentally a connection often associated with white screen problems somewhat worse than yours:
Connection seen here held by two screws.

Do you see this screen (or something similar):
{

}
It not going to recovery mode
How about holding menu while booting, or holding back while booting?
Any LED's come on at all?
Also have you had a look at this thread: "how I unbricked my phone":

Sounds like it's pretty screwed. I would see if you can get HTC to fix it under warranty.
no warrenty IS there anything i can do while the phone is turned off
One of mine Galaxy S4 screen part 3/4 turn to black. Now It just like S4 smart view, even if remove the flip cover. Top of the screen has colours, but bottom part turn to black. He restarted the phone several times but no luck.

Enter download mode and recovery. If you only see part of the screen in both modes, the screen needs to be replaced. If not seen in either mode the GPU on the motherboard is the culprit and needs to be repaired.
My cousin's i9505 works fine, but this is the second time in 3 weeks it boots up into the Warning screen of Odin mode for no reason. The solution to this seems to be to pull out the battery for an hour or so and put it back in and phone works normally again. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Any permanent solution to it?
P.S The second time this happened, the earpiece stopped working and later the phone booted back to Odin Warning screen. Possible water damage causing the buttons to malfunction?

sounds like you have something like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2429585
maybe look for a disassembly video on YouTube to see if you can resolve it yourself or pay to get the button mechanism fixed.
Hi guys,
hopefully you can help me. A friend of mine brought me his phone because it does not boot anymore. He thought it is just an empty battery, but even if he is charging his phone for serveral time, the displays stays off. There is no charging indication. Also when he tries to start the phone, the Samsung bootlogo with model number appears but goes off afterwards.
I already tried the Volume Doen + Power button, also Power + Home button combination, but nothing works. The phone is still only showing the samsung bootlogo and then the display turns off.

I am thankful for every hint or suggestion.
Thanks,
