Kindle Fire HD 8 very laggy and slow - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the newest Fire HD 8 and it has been very slow and laggy lately. When I do anything the screen will go black for about 10 seconds before the app starts running. Same thing happens when I try to stream video or scroll through the home screen, etc.
I have google play store installed and also terrarium, and IPVanish. Other than that, I have taken off everything else. when I use the speedtest app, i get the same black screen and it takes forever to start running although when it does, i get a fast connection with the vpn on or off.
i have tried looking around these forums and a few other places but cannot find anything that really seems to answer the question. i wish I could root this tablet but that does not appear to be an option.
any advice/help would be appreciated, at this point I am thinking of doing a factory reset or just buying a better tablet. thanks for the help.

Have you tried clearing cache in recovery?

You paid 50 for a tablet what do you expect?

This tablet performs decently (for its price tag) out of the box, but once you install the Google services it slows down terribly. I've got the same problem. I loved this tablet because its price mainly, but this lagging after installing Google Play is just unbearable.

I use [Memory Booster - RAM Optimizer] to free up memory as needed and to manage apps from auto-start.

Awesome! It did work for me. Now it runs as smooth as this tablet can run. Thanks so much! I was looking for other cheap tablets but I now will stick to my Kindle Fire HD 8 for a bit longer. I think it's price can't still be beaten.

I would love to know how to do this.

Power off.
Hold the volume down and power buttons.
When the boot screen appears, release the power button.
Use the volume button to navigate to format cache.
Press the power button to select.
After formatting, reboot.

I usually see sluggishness around the 3rd day of being continuously on. Lets see how long this lasts.

In system recovery, my HD 8's cache option is wipe cache partition. Should I do this?

That's what I've been using along with Cache Cleaner with all the preferences enabled: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.frozendevs.cache.cleaner&hl=en

Clearing the cache works for me too, but my HD8 always slows back to a crawl again within a week. Is there any way to disable caching?

Potential Solution
So I bought the 7th gen Fire HD 8 and it had problems right out of the box. I sent it back, got a new one and had the same problems. I somehow had the idea that the problem was my SD card. I had a Fire 7 previously and just popped it in. Once I pulled it, it immediately worked fine. For some reason I can't format it with he Fire 8, it won't let me. But I'm sure if I can or get a new SD card, then it will probably work fine. Give it a shot.

My Kindle Fire HD 8 is soooo Slow too...
Well, I loaded up my Fire HD too with Google Services et al and it lags terribly, tried deleting the cache as suggested but it only works for a little while (like less than a day), then it's back to so slow I want to throw it across the room! Any other ideas? It's the latest 2017 mod... I mean all I am trying to do is load up some information on the browser. I even tried Silk, no better.
I never tried it just vanilla out of the box - perhaps that what I should do - just go back to the original? I wanted something small and cheap to carry around that I could get email, and my calendar + contacts (but I need google services to do that because of a program I run to update my phone from desktop outlook and vice versa), and browse the web as necessary. Thanks.

why dont you remove google services and use third party store app like the apkpure to install apps not in amazon store. the slowness was a big reason I removed google. maybe give a try

THanks, yes I've thought about this. I put so much time into getting the darn thing set up like a real computer . But even after jacking with MTUs on my router today I think I've finally given up and will start from scratch and forget about google play services and all those apps I love to use
Oh I will try apkpure - thanks for the heads up I will see if that gets me where I want to go. I didn't know about it...
I wish there was a magic bullet I just can't find it! Thanks!

While just a tiny bit slower/more laggy than my rooted HD 10, I have three HD 8s with the Play store + many other applications (Tasker, Google Voice/Hangouts, various video editors, graphic design programs, VNC/remote desktop programs, + many more) and these little tablets work very well. I've even edited 4K video on one of them and had no crashes or issues.
Have you tried disabling some of the Amazon system bloatware as described in this post? That helps a lot. Though not a high-end device, these little tablets are actually pretty solid and should give you solid performance. I've even read some tear-down reviews where people who know a lot more about this sort of thing than I do were surprised to find certain build-features and hardware components usually reserved for higher-end devices built into this device and they were surprised because Amazon could have not included these entities and could have made even more money.
Maybe flash the latest stock firmware, remove Amazon bloatware, start from scratch. Happy to help if I can in any way.

Bloat.....
Richard, thank you. I will try that. I didn't know of that post so thanks for that. I will start over and see what happens!

What in particular is slow?
If scrolling home screens is slow, or icons are taking time to show up (or refresh) try a different launcher than the default. Popular ones lately have been Go Launcher, ADW.Launcher, and Zeam.
Are you using the most recent firmware update? (2.0.71 has sped the systems up quite a bit from the older versions)
http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/updates.html?country=us&lang=en&#firm
Are you using an SD card? (If so try adding a file named .nomedia to the card to reduce the gallery from spending time scanning).
Did you install Google Voice? (If not, you should refrain from it since, it is dragging down a lot of systems).
What speed (in settings) do you have your processor set to run. (The most responsive is the Overdrive setting).
If you want to know how to speed your system up you'll need to tell us what is slow about it.
The overall system is getting really unresponsive and what bugs me the most is when I try to install any app through .apk the device fails on me and freezes. Basically when I try to instal any app it freezez when I try to use an app it freezes most of the time
I am using the latest update with the middle setting for power but overdrive doesn't make a big difference. I am running adw launcher which helped and is really good compared to the stock launcher.
The device freezes a lot and thats not because of me having a lot of apps when I get home I will try reinstalling the update keeping the device on overdrive for a long time and will report back

i would do a reset. it really is not as bad as it sounds.
market will tie your purchases to your account, just power off, hold vol-down and power up. choose reset, and then reset device( i do & storage). make sure firmware is 2.0.71, and install gapps5. then just watch what you install, and uninstall things you don't use.
Yeah, it sounds like you need to do a full reinitialization and then reinstall the newest firmware.
My A70 was literally not usable after I tried to upgrade. It was freezing every minute. After a reinstall, everything works great.
And don't forget to set your CPU to overdrive. Really doesn't affect battery too much, and the speed is noticeable.
I turned off the animated live wallpaper. Made my 101 noticable faster.
Deinstall VoiceSearch
You should deinstall the updates of VoiceSearch ....
thanks guys I did a full reinitiolization (not sure bout spelling) and now it is working better, i chose not to install the market and just use applanet for what i want to download, working good now but we'll see how it ends up after a few days of use.
thanks guys you were really helpfull.
dont know if the contents of your memory were wiped with your full reinitialization but i have noticed that every time i install an app i get the little pop up saying that the device is updating its library. this would explain why it would appear to grind to a halt when you install anything

the contents of my memory card did get wiped and i've noticed the less things in the internal memory the better. this is because archos did not partition the internal memory for the users the should have left maybe 2gb for the system and apps and the rest for us to use like what is on the galaxy s, that is what mae the device not lag.

I had the same issue. I had a photo app syncing online and it downloaded 30,000 thumbnails. That with the screwy "update multimedia library" really brought the 70IT to a halt. It would "sync" for about 1 hour leaving about 75% battery left.
I reinitialized and installed gapps4archos v5 with only the market and gmail (no voice or maps) and it's flying now. I wish I could disable the multimedia library sync permanently.

Noob has rooting questions about xperia play

Hi all im new to the forum and have a few questions about rooting my xperia play and wondered if some of you in the know could help?...
im interested in using gingerbreak v1.20 to do the root, i have read the tutorial and understand most of it and from what i have read on the forums other XP users have had varied success.
my questions are...
1. my phone is on a vodaphone contract and im not sure if its sim locked (to that specific network) and does this effect the root?
2. my phone had some kind of update downloaded to its software from vodaphone about 1 week ago gingerbread 2.3.2 build number 3.0.A.2.184 other people with this version root ok?
3. so just to clarify i was wondering if that update ive had has hindered my chances of the rooting also if my phone being locked to a specific network (e.g vodaphone) is a problem?
4. last but not least, if my phone fails to reboot after the rooting process, how hard is it to put it back to original version? (like do i need more software to fix the failure or can i just remove the battery wait 30secs and itll be back to normal)?
i know these may seem very basic questions to u veteran rooters, but id like to get involved i just wanna have more knowledge myself before i jump in, and would appreciate your feedback, loving my xperia play and i want to improve it and not brick it
cheers in advance
I am with tmobile and also received the ota update before I rooted.
SIM lock doesn't effect root.
I can tell you that the update won't effect running Gingerbreak at all.
You shouldn't have any worries using Gingerbreak as is.
It is purely an apk and will either successfully root your device or will not.
This is the easiest method of rooting i've ever used.
I was an android n00b when I got my hero & had to go through the method of creating a gold card & reverting to an older build & flashing flashrec!
To be honest, now my play is rooted in probably won't even bother using custom roms in the future.
I did all that with my hero and am happy with the plays UI.
I just wanted root to free up more space.
I'd also recommend researching setinstalllocation2 on here.
Doing this natively installs everything to sd and is worth the time.
cheers for the speedy reply DeadlyDazza, yeah id like to remove some of the stock rubbish to free up some space i was also hoping to do a small overclock, is this possible with a basic root? using the android overclocking apps?
im still nervous about the reboot and it not coming back on :S
@DeadlyDazza did you use gingerbreak on an empty/formatted sd card like described in the tutorial or does it also work with a sd full of installed apps? ( i really dont want to delete all my apps and data)
cheers covux
I have a fair bit of installing custom Roms on Android phones and i can honestly say this -
Unless you are rooting the phone in order to help develop custom roms and tweaks there really is no point in rooting it at the current moment.
Gingerbread is excellent at managing apps and the Xperia Play is designed so that games run independently from your homescreen.
"Trimming the fat" will offer almost zero benefit at the moment.
My advice is to wait a while, let the experts put together some custom Roms and gain access to the Kernel, allowing us to overclock.
Until then, i do not see a reason to root at all.
Unless you just, like me, wants to get rid of bloatware and ads in various apps and other benefits with root access
+1 on liking the XP UI and don't want to flash and mod this phone as I did with my HTC desire hd
If you just want that, root it now and keep your locked bootloader and enjoy the XP as it is
Regards Dousan...
Rooting does have many benefits, which mine was to free up more space on a device that, although is designed for gamers, seems to fall very short of.
Also to use root enabled apps such as cache mate.
Apart from the space issues, which have now been resolved by rooting & setinstalllocation2, I'm more than happy with my Xperia Play.
Will I be saying the same in 6 months? Probably not, I'll probably be wanting a fresher feel.
But that depends on how much support SE give the Play (my last device was the Hero & HTC was very slow with their support).
In answer to the question about running Gingerbreak with blank sd.
I had a spare 8gig that I formatted & used.
I didn't want to risk losing any data & couldn't be bothered to back up the 14gig on my card.
Although I have heard a few people say that running Gingerbreak is completely safe & won't erase any data.
Didn't erase anything on my sdcard when I rooted my XP, would still recommend a backup before using gingerbreak I was just lazy and went ahead without doing a backup. Did one today...
Regards Dousan...
@DeadlyDazza, @Dousan thanks for the info, i think i will also use a spare blank sd.

I read in one of the reviews/specs for the phone that the homescreen and gaming operate independently meaning that when you play games, the homescreen sits in another part of memory or works in another processing thread or something.
The point being made was that whatever app you have open in the homescreen, won't make your games stutter or lag when you are playing them.
Maybe an expert can clarify this.
As for your problem, i can say that something is wrong with your setup for your games to be unloaded out of memory and shutdown when you navigate to the homescreen.
I would imagine you have an appkiller that is setup to close all running apps when you navigate to the homescreen.
I can't stress the importance of not using app killers with the gingerbread o/s. They are not needed, they will not improve performance of the phone, they will not make you battery last longer.
In fact, app killers will make your battery last SHORTER on gingerbread, since you will be using alot more processing power to load and unload them.
I don't use any app-killers.
Do you navigate to your homescreen with the back button, the home button or holding the home button and selecting a new icon?
Ok I have just performed 3 tests.
1) Emulator test - had tiger genesis running playing sonic 2. Hit the home button and navigated instantly to home screen. Tiger genesis happily sits in the notification bar. Navigating back to tiger genesis sees it exactly as before I left it.
2) Playstation pocket game crash bandicoot - loaded the game and hit the hom
e key. Same as above. The game sits in the notification bar and returns to the exact state you left it in when you return back to it.
3) Xperia play game Backstab - loaded the game and hit the home key. The game did not sit in they notification bar, but reselecting the game from the xperia play menu put the game onscreen at the exact position I left it from.
I can not re-create your situation where navigating to the homescreen makes the game unload from memory.
I made his post on my xperia play btw and performed each test while making this post. My browser doesn' t even unload from memory.

So does it only happen with a certain game? All games?
What about apps?
I find it hard to believe that hitting the home key unloads anything from memory unless you have changed some major settings.
Using Xperia Play games.
If I go to home when playing or paused the game unloads.
Not changed any settings at all.

Ok try this and tell me what happens.
- Slide the phone open
- Load Bruce Lee
- Get into an actual fight
- Hit the home key
- Slide the phone down
- Slide the phone up
- Load Bruce Lee
After doing this, my game has paused, but is exactly where i left it. The game did not unload, and therefore did not reload. It was exactly as i left it.
If yours does not do the same, and you havn't changed any settings or are running any app killers, then i suggest you make sure you have the latest revision of firmware and try again.
Bruce Lee stays in memory ok.
Star Battalion & Dungeon Defenders quit as soon as you hit home.

I can confirm that Star Battalion stays in memory after i hit the home screen on my phone.
It shows identical behaviour as Bruce Lee.
When you hit home, and reload the game, the game has paused itself and when you unpause, the game is exaclty as when you left it.
Can't confirm Dungeon Defenders behavious since i do not own it.
If you continue experiencing problems, i would suggest you have faulty memory and request a handset replacement.

[Q] Why does video playback cause a hang?

I realize the NST eink display is too slow to play back video and it lacks audio hardware.
But why does trying to play video cause the whole thing to lock up?
If I go to the youtube app or youtube.com or any other web video for that matter, the screen turns black
and it hard freezes and I need to hold down the power button on the back to turn it off.
What I am wondering is what is the technical reason?
I'm not sure about the technical part, but it does matter if you have the only available Flash installation as well as the browser you are using. Opera Mobile will balk at Flash, mostly refusing to even accept the touch input or throwing up a message saying, in effect, "no way". The Dolphin 10.x series browser will display Flash content in some circumstances, either using the embedded player, or an external player like MX. Some videos in some situations seem to invoke the native Flash players (maybe Flash Lite?) that comes with the triple-Flash plugin installation. This results in a black screen (although touching the screen sometimes shows the controls) from which it is very difficult to recover without a hard reset.
I wrote a more detailed post on the Flash issue with Opera Mobile and Dolphin awhile back here.
Bottom line: it's hardly worth the effort, even with FastMode or NoRefresh. It's just a "let's see if I can do this" thing.

Well okay. I am having this problem with HTML5 videos on Opera Mobile
but I think the same thing happens in dolphin. The problem with dolphin is sometimes the page doesn't render

It's a shame that the Nook does not have Bluetooth.
That would only require a trivial change to a single IC.
It's a shame that the Nook only has 256M RAM, hardly adequate.
It's a shame that the Nook is pretty much orphaned.

Ok now I have somewhat of an unrelated question.
In elixr 2 I see "Dialer storage" and "com.bn.demomode" using 11MB of RAM each
Since this isn't a phone and doesn't have a dialer is it possible to get rid of those and gain some free memory?
Go for it. Neither of those apps are needed for the Nook to work correctly.
You can also delete:
Phone.apk
TelephonyProvider(s).apk
PicoTTS.apk (and the other one like it, they're Text To Speech apps)
DeviceRegistrator.apk
Launcher.apk
NookHWTest.apk
Music.apk
Gallery.apk
You can delete more, but if you still want all the B&N functions (like me) don't delete much else. For example, DeviceManager.apk is necessary!

Thank you.
I deleted Phone.apk, TelephonyProvider.apk and DemoMode.apk and there doesn't seem to be any negative effects.
And my cold boot RAM free went from 100MB free to 118MB free
Not a huge difference but hey 18 more MB is 18 more MB and with 256 RAM you need every bit.
I also removed Music.apk since it doesn't serve any purpose without audio output. I don't have PicoTTS.apk
Now every boot dolphin browser starts a service. Is there a way to disable it without uninstalling dolphin?
It isn't needed because dolphin works even if I kill it
Grab ES Task Manager and find the "Startup Manager" option in the menu. Tap it, then scroll down the list until you see a Dolphin-related app. Go to the far-right of the Dolphin listing and tap the "x" to remove it from startup programs.

This is one of the thing why I'm planning to re flush my device to Android 5.1 or M.
Thank you for any ideas.
I'd like to find a way to do that too. Would love to replace that twitch menu with a recents menu. Preferably with a force close option.

I can't believe that so lazy people over here.
Any way , i found solution Smart+Taskbar+2+(V2)_2.3.0
Its OK at least resolved some discomfort .
good luck
@Zavulon61 I think you misunderstand. It's not laziness, it's efficiency. When you have multiple programs running and need to keep switching back & forth it really gets time consuming. For instance, editing a config file for an emulator in a file explorer then opening the emulator to test the new settings. Especially when the apps are sideloaded and do not show up on the home screen. Some apps even require a force close to reload the changes made.
As for the app you mentioned, I googled it and it seems to only be shortcuts to programs you select, not a list of recent apps.
There is no way to get recent apps as of android 5.0 as Google removed that ability. They had to to get the improvements in, but I digress. I personally use Glovebox on the left, and swapps on the right, with a mouse of course, and it's not as good as it should be on full android, but it's much much better. I'd suggest giving it a shot.

Thank you for new idea . I tried Glovebox . I like it. Now it is my lifesaver . Thank you again!!!

New Ultra headed my way!

Should have it by the 17th. Really looking forward to it.
There looks to be a lot more info here on Remix in general ...looks good! ?
One thing is I am hoping for is a way to safely increase the ram. Seems I read that the Ultra is already rooted, so hopefully there is an easy way to do this!
OH... The Ultra is on sale at Amazon for $199 ...says it includes keyboard! Sweet!
?
It's not rooted. But its easy to flash a custom recovery and install the su binary.

If you can find the Cyanogen Mod recovery then you can download the supersu from the market. Boot into recovery and then apply the supersu as an update. Once done you cannot get OTA updates, but supersu lets you unroot and then you can repeate the process of replacing the recovery and rooting. Very easy to do and much easier than using other root tools out there.
Got it early. Ordered Friday... delivered Monday.
Already updated to 2.0, which changed the settings app. Then the mouse stopped working on the keyboard, so I may be looking to reset the tab and start over... not that big of a deal.
Unless someone chimes in here with an idea to get the trackpad working again.
Neat tab. Made a video I may post later.
Thanks for any helpful input.
Reset the tablet, all is well for the trackpad.
So this is supposed to be a multi-tasker, but for the life of me I cannot find the feature that was on version 1.5 ....the ability to have phone sized windows.
Where did that feature go? Anyone know?
Thanks.

Try under settings / applications and see if open in full screen mode is checked.

Thank you. I found it and it is un-checked.
I have since found a few apps, like calculator and another I installed ...Ccleaner, do open in smaller or larger windows, and can be moved about on the screen.
Still none of my larger apps, that I use for business ...like Polaris, seem to have any options to change.
I am thinking I am going to have to carefully check my apps and look for those which may work and fit with the Remix multi windows setup. So far there are not many.
Not quite what I expected, but I will keep working with it.
Thanks again!
I mentioned this in another post here. It applies to version 2.0.
The way to determine if the app being used can be brought down to a phone sized/smaller window is to swipe down with your finger from the top. To the right will be the option to expand or contract the app. Works on some apps, not on others, but at least now I know where the option is.
Hope this helps.
App Freezing
Anyone having problems with apps freezing, mouse still working, but cant scroll or select on apps.
Giving me trouble in facebook messenger and google drive
oh yeah. i have to hard-reboot mine at least once a day. video is usually the culprit, specifically youtube.
support didn't have any advice so i've just gotten used to it.
Its an ongoing problem. Video is the first notification of it you'll notice, but I've seen it in games too, specifically Alto's Adventure and The Room 3.
According to the errors I've captured with logcat its an issue caused by the nvidia drivers.
yes, i have noticed that in logcat too. is it that NVIDIA is not meant to work with android? surely there are other android devices on their chips... it is so frustrating.
