I am soon to take receipt of my first Raspberry Pi 3 board and a camera module, I'm quite enthusiastic about this. However, rather than just have a live stream I would like to be able to store the video and believe that making use of the included USB ports with a thumb drive would be the cleanest option.
However, there are four ports and I would like to know how, if possible, to rotate between them if each one were occupied by a separate thumb drive, as and when they filled to capacity, then overwriting on a loop?
Using MotionEyeOS it is possible to default the save location to USB and have data overwritten to avoid overfilling capacity.

Is it possible to have videos played directly (in Divx or any other compatible format) from a USB thumb drive connected to the GT10.1 via the addon USB accessory?
Thanks

thumbs up for this question! Would like to know this, too!
The answer to your question is no... not directly. The only way to do it is to connect your tab to a computer, copy the file over, disconnect the tab, and play it from the local hard drive on the tab.
When I copied movies over, it took an .mp4 file and converted it to wmv on the tab.
I also noticed that when your tab is plugged into the computer, you can't do anything on the tab. If you do, it disconnects the tab from the computer.
Hope this helps.
After doing a bit more research, here's an update:
It looks like Samsung makes a usb adapter. I can't post links, but google "Galaxy Tab Adapter (USB)"
Yes, once the USB adapter is available you will be able to use thumb drives, portable hard drives, etc, to play movies, music...
Will you be able to transfer files back to the Thumb Drive once the USB adapter is available? Or will it only be able to download?
I assume we have no idea when Samsung will make said adapter available.

It is (said to be ) usb host. I have used usb host before. literally it is 100% a usb drive. you can upload, download, read, edit, play, delete, any file that is attached to it.
And you can connect a mouse or keyboard too. Just think of it as a usb slot. If the adaptor is legitimate usb host then it should perform every of the above.
I'm also waiting too.
a usb drive should function the same way it does on your computer. you will be able to play files that are on it, copy files from it and load files onto it. it will act just like sd cards do now in android.
the adapter is available for order now, but I believe it's listed as "back order"
Has anyone else noticed that due to the design of the tab, if you have a usb drive plugged in and are using headphones, you won't be able to prop it up? They're on opposite sides, so one plug would always be blocked!
I decided this wasn't the biggest deal for me, but it's definitely an annoying design decision.
Hey guys, I'm sorry to bring this back up again almost 4 months later, but has anyone tried to use an external cd/dvd drive with the usb adapter? I'm wondering I could play a movie from the external cd/dvd drive and have it play on the tabet. Thanks.

I haven't done it, but I think you would need an external power source to power the dvd drive. The USB does not supply enough power for that. Also, I think the USB hub for the Tab can only read FAT32 formatted drives, so I don't think it has the software to read directly from DVD, but I don't know.
Just play the from the USB device. How can this be a portable device if it has everything dangling from it...For that get a thin notebook.
It depends... USB can only provide about 500mA of current tops but with that tablet it probably even less, so your HDD would need external power supply.
Also, out of box, Galaxy Tab support only FAT32 as file system. So, you would need drivers/modules to support anything else.
I am using pershoot kernel with NTFS module, so I tested 16Gbyte jump drive formatted with NTFS. I was being able to mount it and read from it no problem. So, I see no problem to mount and read from HDD (granted you have to have external power supply for it).
If you are talking about CD/DVD drive then you would need driver/module for that and I did not see it available.
Ok, so I've been trawling the threads for hours and the time has come to make my first post on this..
Here's what I really want to do, and whether or not, as I understand, I can do it:
Nexus 7 in dash, 3G model - fine, been done loads of times
250GB USB HDD, connected via USB OTG, containing my music library - possibly, depends on my hard drive? Will it work if I can provide a secondary source of power to the HDD (my caddy allows this)
Charge the N7 at the same time - again possibly, with CM10 and kernel mod? Also new to Android so shooting in the dark a bit here.
OPTIONAL/BACKUP IDEAS:
Wi-Fi drive of some sort - If it works then maybe, seems like an extreme option though for a car install.
Google Music and stream my entire collection (I have 15GB monthly data sim that I can use in the N7) - will work but not ideal for me. I have a lot of lossless music which I won't be able to take advantage of this way. Which brings me on to...
USB DAC through OTG cable - possible I know, but to do this on top of the other stuff is gonna be difficult and unreliable? Can live with just the headphone jack output for the time being, unless:
Utilise the pogo pins for a line out and charging - would be a nice solution in the car but again, possible?
It would be fantastic if someone could tie this all together simply for me somehow, or if anyone has any far better ideas for what I'm trying to do :good:
Also feel free to ridicule my noob-ness
Cheers
i want to get an OGT cable so i can use polaris office to create documents and store it on my usb flash drive. this way i don't have to bring my heavy laptop everywhere. however, i've read somewhere that google took out OTG cable support in nexus 4? is this true? can i still do this?
Currently no. It's said that the N4 lacks the ability to output 5V in USB OTG. It may be possible later on, if you have provisions to supply your own power.
It has two other threads about it. Please use the search.

DAYUM...that sucks....no point in having polaris office then
Unless you're commonly working in an area with no Internet access, it's probably more convenient and less prone to data loss if you just sync your documents to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box.net, etc., instead of using a USB drive. Of course, if your phone and/or your laptop don't have Internet access, you'd need to do something else, like maybe a wi-fi drive (Amazon currently has the 32GB Kingston wi-drive on sale for $50). For that matter, documents are usually pretty small and shouldn't take up too much of the internal memory in the phone. In any event, lack of USB host support shouldn't be fatal to the idea of using your phone instead of your laptop for documents.
I had read in some other random forum that if you have rooted your Nexus 7, which I have, and run app "StickMount" you can connect a usb thumb drive to the nexus and give yourself more space, even install apps to the USB drive to run from. I am wondering (and am going to test it out later this evening) if anyone has tried connecting a USB hub, so that you can have say 4 ports to add different drives or game controllers/whatever else and android will recognize the different devices?
As a realist, I'm just hoping the single USB stick connection will actually work as a storage expansion area, as we all know there is no micro SD slot. I actually have an old college friend I keep in touch with who works on the Nexus development team, who had no good answer as to why micro SD was removed, as well as the ability on devices with a micro SD no longer allow the installation of apps to the sd card. I was pretty convinced it was simply because the OEMs decided to name their internal memory /mnt/sdcard which used to be the external card's mount point name, but I'm told it is more complicated than that. Am I the only one that really feels like no apps to the SD in ICS or jellybean, is quite a downgrade? I understand we can use the "cloud" now ... but that's simply not the same, and surely not as fast as a local drive (maybe?) I then proceeded to yell at him to not let the group of stupid consumers influence the great features that the half-brained+ consumers know how to properly use, to no avail. Using the micro to full USB port to mount a thumb drive seemed to be the best way to add more storage locally. Thoughts? Thanks

NM - Just found app "USB Host controller" which does exactly what I asked Yayyyy!!
There are actually a whole slew of these that are even free, most require root however, which I recommend using the program with GUI interface developed specifically to unlock the bootloader, and then root the nexus 7. I think it was called Root_Toolbox or something like that. I am not at home or I would report back the official name. If anyone wants it just let me know. Thank you!

A hub works great. I've had 3 flash sticks mounted at once along with a mouse and everything has worked without a hitch.
The caveat here is to ensure you're not pulling too much current - the OTG max current source spec is alot less than the 500mA a normal USB PC host port is able to source.
Hi All,
I would be interested to find out how you feel about certain omissions in the latest rendition of the AF TV.
There is no doubt that the FTV3 packs a punch and will stack up well against the competition at an extremely competitive price.....however when looking at the finer details there are some concerns.
* The FTV essentially hangs off the HDMI port of your TV, this in my opinion could add unnecessary stress on your HDMI port therefore an extender will need to be purchased.
*There is no room for expandable memory - according to the spec sheet there is a surprisingly only 8 Gigs of internal memory - which will probably leave you with 5 Gigs available after 'bloatware' is taken into consideration.
*The only other port this unit has besides HDMI is a micro USB port used only for charging - no Optical Out, Micro SD for expandable memory, no USB for say a wireless keyboard/air mouse, no Ethernet Port - of course you can get this as an optional purchase :/
Simply put If you intend on using your Fire TV for Assigned applications and services only then this may not concern you too much, for myself this leaves me with a bitter taste, I understand they have taken cost saving into consideration but at what 'cost'
I'm certain the existing Fire TVs will be discontinued momentarily which is why i went out immediately after the announcement and picked up a new Second Gen.
What are your thoughts?
Agreed. But I can hardly tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, and I have no reason to pursue 4K or HDR with any device.

I am not sure it does not have USB support. The Ethernet adapter uses the charging port so it obviously is not charging only. I will certainly plug in a USB hub when it arrives to see what happens.
I'll have two rooted Gen 1 FireTV boxes for sale if anyone needs them. If not they are going on eBay. The Gen 3's will be good enough for what I use them for. As long as they allow installation of apks.
Perhaps a micro USB OTG cable could be plugged into that USB port and expand storage using a flash drive?
No - I've tried to plug a Y cable into the Fire TV 3 micro USB port and attached a flash drive - the Fire TV doesn't detect it and none of the other programmes such as Archos Player can find files on the flash drive either, the only way to access files on the flash drive is with ES file explorer or something similar. Have also tried to install Google Play and Google Music on the Fire TV 3 but to no avail.
