Daily random reboot - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I have noticed almost every single night for the previous two weeks my Essential phone restarts itself. The only way I can tell this is when checking my phone in the morning the pin lock comes on and says pin must be entered after restarting. This happened with the November security update and still happening after downloading the December security update. Is anyone else noticing this?

From the title I thought you found randomly placed red boots every day just walking around..
Mine has done that a few times but it's not every night. I'm running the oreo beta and have automatic updates enabled so I assumed it was due to that.

Happening to me too and it's causing my alarm to not go off in the morning (using Sleep as Android). Been late to work twice now this week because of it. Super annoying, probably going to reach out to Essential support for it.
Edit: Found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/essential/comments/7hqf8s/ph1_restarts_every_night_when_charging/
And that seems to be the case on my phone - it's not restarting overnight but it is going into doze and requiring the additional security when waking. This, unfortunately, is also suspending Sleep As Android. So I've tried excluding it from the battery optimizations to see if this will help.

Well I guess that's good to know. The aggravating thing being that it resets the Smart Lock when doing this. So now " I " have to restart my phone every morning so I can reset the Smart Lock so my phone stays unlocked while connected to my Android.

Coming back to this, because I'm still having issues. Sleep As Android gets suspended overnight. It initially was happening randomly, now it seems to happen every night.
I still believe the phone may be crashing, just not completely rebooting. I noticed that a reddit app I use (Relay) was using much more CPU recently and making the phone warm, draining the battery... while previous use didn't really do this. So I went to clear the cache for the app from system settings.
The phone froze... touchscreen became unresponsive. I gave it 15-20 seconds and it was still stuck so I tried to hold the power button in an attempt to find which button combination would force a reset. During this time, the phone decided to respond again and took all of the input I had tried at once - the power menu came up and it returned to the lock screen.
At the bottom of the lock screen - "Unlock the phone to use all features and data" just as it shows up every morning after "deep doze"
But the phone's uptime didn't restart. 131 hours and counting now.
So maybe this is a warranty-able issue after all.

G1 Doesnt Always Wake Up

Does anyone elses G1 not wake up when Menu is pressed? Sometimes I have to press it like 6 times before the phone wakes up, does anyone know why?
Mine does this as well. I just thought it was learning from it's owner (I take more than 5-6 pokes to wake me up too).
My only guess is that something is running in the background in order to slow it down and the number of presses has little to do with it.

Yea, i was thinkin the same, i should try runnin a ton of apps and find out if [email protected] the problem
mine does the same things sometimes. gets annoying at times. usually i just open and close the keyboard
Mine recently started this, it must be something we downloaded, plus I have the following problems too, they all started at the same time:
1) When someone calls, the screen stay blank for a while so the phone rings but the screen is off so I dont see whos calling
2) The background keeps changing back to the original blue picture thing
3) The WiFi keeps turning off and drians the battery, nothing I do stops it from turning on. I have all sorts of software running, I even ask Locale to turn it off if its between 12.01am to 11pm and still WiFi keeps poping up.
4) Battery drains FAST lately.
I uninstalled a long list of software and problem is not solved.

Shop Savvy?
I also started having the wake up problem and quicker then normal battery drain. I have an ADP1 phone which I updated to 1.1 a few days before noticing issue
I think that the theory of something sucking clock cycles is a good one. I noticed my CPU Usage (when nothing was running other then System Monitor) went from 0-40% to 20-70%.
I couldn't be bothered with the finer points of troubleshooting, so I took the thermo-nuclear approach and did a factory wipe.
Just before the mystery CPU cycle and wake up issue, I hadn't installed any new apps, BUT I did update a bunch of existing apps. After the factory wipe, I left off installing the following list:
Watts
StreamFurious
DroidFTP
Telnet
e-VoiceRecorder
VoiceRecorder
Constitution
Barcode Scanner
Astro
RingDroid
SlovoEd Classic English Dictionary
Things are fine now.
both of my g1's do this, and have done this out of the box, anyone turn off there screen with the keyboard out, and then close the screen and the screen comes back on with the lock screen up and then having to turn the screen back off? annoying
try the swapper app?
or turn phone off and back on, it might becuase you are usingahome or openhome or dxtop or sweeterhome, these app may slow down the interface a bit, try downloading droid sans tweak lite and fool around with that..
goodluck i also get this sometimes

I'm having same issue as the OP and issued #1, 3 and 4 from the above post.
Hmm, im not experiencing any of the above posted issues, it may be a particular app that u have installed. I only have the wakeup issue sometimes, most likely when the phone is running slow from the browser or another memory draining app, but no app in particular.
Hmm, when mine fails to wake up, I never waited long enough for it to come back, just reseated the battery for a reboot.
Of the other problems, I have the "screen-black-for-a-few-before-caller-picture-shows-up" issue.

what firmware do you have?
btw, dont count on Locale to turn off your stuff all the time, its not very accurate imo, at times its great, but thanks to the crappy g1 battery, they have a choice, constantly check time/location/.ect and drain the battery in a hour flat, or periodically check it and reduce battery drain, do you have any wifi programs that keep wifi on when phone sleeps (such as wifi lock and so on)? if so use the program on the market that writes up a log of its actions and see if its acting up
as for #1 (sorry im unorganized) my phone does that too, i believe its because i have 2 programs that run when the phone rings, let alone im sure locale is checking to see who is coming since thats a condition, which would make 3, and then i have a mp3 that plays when the phone rings, and i have a class 4 sd card (i know, i know), the way that programs work is that it has to go line by line of the code, if it is slowed down, or it has to execute other items before continuing that are slow to execute, than everything has a delay, but yeah from time to time i have this issue, phoneplus was a program that made me miss a few calls (1/4th of the time)
i think 3 and 4 are directly related, could be wrong
I was having the same problem right after I installed the app "Contact Owner"
No amount of reboots fixed the problem. Uninstalled and everything was back to normal.

consider upgrading to the rc33 ota update yet? i had better battery life (and my battery didnt get as hot) when i used rc33
also, if youve had your phone since it first came out (rc19 i believe) and your battery used to get very hot, you might of damaged some of the cells (especially of the battery has expanded), if this is the case simply call tmobile and tell them that your noticing even after wiping the phone that your battery life is lasting shorter and shorted, even with out any programs installed from the market, i even went as far as to say that i made sure wifi was off, only 2g was on, gps was off, screen was dimmed, timeout set at 30 secs, and im still only getting a hour of life (none of which is true but it got through all the "well how about trying this and calling back if you still have a problem" bs, with the ota rc33 and the new battery, i noticed a pretty good difference
I have a modified version of this "doesnt always wake up". The phone is less than 24 hours old, it was a refurb they sent me for the last one that went dead. I used it with the rc33 it came with and found the problem, then figured it was hosed so i rooted and installed 3 of the versions of cupcake (The Dude, JF, and Haykuro) to see if they all had the issue- they do. Here is a video, hope you can see the attempted keypresses. There will be lines that appear, like the screen is broke..then, they will go away. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes to get the phone to turn on, however if I leave it on (never goes to sleep) it works flawlessly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecQo2Ly2WUM
I get this all the time also...
Uninstalling dxTop doesn't change anything for me...it still acts the same...
I also get the problem that when someone calls me the screen stays blank for about 5 seconds and I can't tell who calling...
wake up issue
I am experiencing the same problem, with a brand new warranty replaced G1, what happens is when the phone goes to sleep it completely locks up, when I try to wake it up via menu, it does not wake. Plugging the phone in and trying ddms or adb does not work, ddms shows the phone as offline, also the device seems to get really hot when this happens, sometimes Call + Menu + Power resets it, and sometimes I have to pull the battery.
I think this may have to do with wifi turned on. Because when the screen goes off your phone switches wifi off and goes to 3G as default setting.
I think we should try leaving wifi on all the time and see if that solves the issue, im about to try that now.
It seems this is a known issue over at tmo forums
A couple questions:
When this happens to you guys is wifi enabled and connected when the phone is shut off?
What Rom, SPL, and Radio is installed?
I noticed this didnt happen to me until I enabled wifi, maybe I didnt wait long enough because its completely random, please send back your results

Phone randomly stops sleeping

My phone will randomly stop sleeping, this has happened pretty much since i've gotten it.
I will launch spare parts, running near 100%. Check partial wake lock, nope nothing. And nothing under any of the other menus in spare parts that would indicate it not sleeping. This will occur after a couple of days even after installing no apps, restarting does not fix, neither does pulling battery. It will just start happening and only way to fix is data reset / factory wipe until it happens again, but when it does start happening I might've not even be using it at the time.
Okay, i did actually finally fix it after months without factory reset, it appeared to be when 3g and Data-always enabled was ticked.

If this fixes my no sleep problem, I will name my first child after you.
I've been detailing the steps I've taken to resolve my no sleep issue on another forum, with the last action I took being a flash to factory ROM from huaweidevice.com, changing absolutely nothing on the phone for 24 hours, rebooting, and waiting another 24 hours. Without a reboot between charge/taking off charge, it would be 100% running. If I took it off charge and immediately rebooted, running would be more like 30% (ie: 'normal').
I'll give 'data-always' a go

Okay im unsure now, was all fine yesterday, woke up at 7 to alarm, lost 2% overnight. then just put it under my bed but now that i've woken up i've lost 18% because it just stopped sleeping again. I didn't do anything except turn it on check battery, and turn it off. So back to being confused again
Still having this problem, for example. It was sleeping fine when I went to bed then at some point during the night just stopped.
Running 64.6% 10h
Screen on 10ish% 45 minutes
Highest item with partial wake lock in spare parts is like 5 minutes, no other indicators.
This is happening no matter which ROM i try.
Considering a stock ROM with exactly 0 changes still has sleep issues, its clearly a firmware "thing".
For me, it happens after being taken off charge.
For e.g. Last thing before bed I check my running time, and its somewhere around 35-40%. Plug into charger. Take off in the morning, goto work etc, check my run time and its 100% even without the phone being touched.
For the moment I just downloaded one of the "root only" reboot widgets from the Market. Its just part of my morning "get ready for work" routine to hit the reboot widget and reboot my phone.
Its a bit of a PITA but until new firmware is released I cant see a way around it.

Hey don't know if you've tested it further than that. But its much appreciated, that rebooting after charging does seem to work . But just wondering, if you know... does it only do it when charging via usb (computer) or AC or does it not matter?
I have exactly the same problem.
I also noticed that reboot helps, but only for a while. If i want my phone to go to sleep mode when the screen is off, i would have to reboot it few times a day... Turning WiFi/GPS/Auto-sync on/off does not have any affect on this.

As per your suggestion via email, I tried the Malaysian firmware.... It seemed that 'running' time was down alot, but battery life was still pretty average. That was doing nothing more than installing the Malaysian firmware and entering my Google account - no root, no launcher changes, etc.
The lack of Swype was a bit of a downer too
I gave it a whirl from 6:30am to around 5:00pm and 'running' was right down in the 10% range, but battery was still down to ~45% over that time in 'pure' stock form. DAMMIT!
Ah well. It was a good thought and hopefully it worked for you I'm back on roadhound + the OTA update as of about two hours ago.
I'm going to scour the SGS forums and see if anything there can be applied to the U8800 RE: battery life improvements.

Oh yeah sorry, try using something like juice defender to disable 3g when screen is off or something. 3g radio keeps it running, but it doesn't appear to be, this will stop the battery drains.
EDIT: That does work but its not ideal, turns out the u8800 and the u8800h use the exact same radio so im not sure now, don't know if there is any possible way to figure it out.

Hey guys.
This may not really be the thing you need but I was having similar problems and running 100% on without sleeping etc and came accross another forum where this was an issue (cant remember where)and as trivial as it sounds the solution for me was to go into settings/ applications/ manage applications and running applications and go down to media storage and clear the data. I do this now and then when I have this problem and it seems to help.... Maybe worth a try? It seems to be an issue with a particular media file. I also try to reboot my phone after every charge. Note that my phone is totally stock

Thanks for advice, but unfortunately this didn't help either. For some unknown reason, my running time is again 100% although the screen is off most of the time. In Partial wake usage, Android System is in the top of the list.
Oh, Android System partial wake lock seems to be a different issue, but maybe someone can help you out. Whats happening here is running = 100% yet there is no partial wake lock held. Quite unusual

Yes, it is confusing also because i have tried different ROM's with same result. I would have thought that all u8800 owners have the same problem.

Note 4 freezes while charging after lollipop

I tried posting this in the Sprint thread but haven't gotten any answers yet so perhaps I'll have better luck here. I pasted both posts to show the initial problem and what I did (essentially I factory reset). I'm still having the same problem where my phone will freeze while I'm charging it (about 2-3 times/week) requiring a battery pull. Anybody else seeing this problem or have suggestions on what I should try? Thanks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Twice this week my alarm didn't go off (luckily I set a backup today) because sometime throughout the night something happened. When I woke up the phone was frozen on the yellow Sprint Spark startup screen. I needed to pull the battery and everything started up fine. I updated to Lollipop about 2 weeks ago which is where I'm guessing the issues stem from.
Is there anything I should try other than restoring to factory and starting over? I'd prefer to not have to wipe everything from my phone but these issues are becoming problematic. I am not rooted.
Thanks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So I ended up doing a factory reset and while the phone certainly started running faster with better battery performance after the reset I'm still having this issue. I would say it occurs 2-3 times a week. It has only occurred overnight which is typically when I charge my phone so I'm pretty sure it is related to being left connected to the charger. The majority of the times I will wake up with a dim yellow Sprint screen and everything else frozen though occasionally the screen will be black with the led notification light red. In both situations the screen will not respond to any button pushes or holds and I need to pull the battery and then everything will start up fine.
Does anybody have any suggestions here on what I should do? I guess I can try and restore one more time and see but I don't really know why it would be different and it is certainly a pain to keep restoring the phone and losing all my settings. I definitely don't want to root now since I believe that voids the warranty and if I can't figure anything out with this I'll certainly be requesting a new phone from Sprint. Before I start dealing with Sprint though I thought I would check here first. Through all my searches on the internet I haven't seen anyone else complaining about this problem.
Thanks.

Hi there. I have a Canadian Note 4 (W8) with Bell, and I am having identical issues.
While charging over night, I find my phone stuck on "Samsung" logo, with the bubble animal still running. Holding down the power button does nothing and the only work around is the battery pull. I noticed that it also gets warm (assuming from the screen on time?)
First tried cache wipe - no fix
Factory reset - no fix
Cache wipe again - no fix
Aaaand today I came into work late

Definitely after the upgrade.
While on KitKat, it never happened (1 month ownership). But after upgrading to lollipop, it has happened 4 times (6 nights since lollipop).
Have you figured anything out with your situation? Woke up this morning to my backup alarm and the Yellow Sprint screen on my phone.
I guess I'll have to try another factory reset and if it still happens try and get a replacement. It just doesn't seem widespread enough of an issue to be a software bug with 5.0.1.
Very frustrated. I did another factory reset but the issue still plagues my device. It still only occurs once or twice a week but when I hear my old clock radio alarm in the morning I know when I look over I'll see the yellow frozen Sprint Spark screen. I am completely out of ideas and guess I will need to have it replaced under warranty. I'm hoping Sprint won't give me a hard time as this will be very hard to demonstrate.
It definitely appears to be a software issue as it never happened before I upgraded to Lollipop but there must be more to it or others would be complaining.
If anybody has ideas please let me know. Thanks.
Response to Note 4 Freeezing while charging
I have found that after turning the quick charge feature off the problem is not happening. Hopefully this is fixed in 5.1
I'm having the same issue even after turning quick charge off..def a lollipop bug, never experienced this on kk.
I know its not the BEST option, but after taking the update to lollipop, sometimes left over kitkat files can make the system poop out. Sometimes a factory reset will take care of the leftovers. But of course, then you have to set your phone up again
If you've tried this or plan to to, let us know the results.
(When i first took the update, my heartrate monitor sensor was always on, so i did a factory reset and it fixed my problem).
Solved with workaround!!!
I faced this "sleep of death" too after updating to Lollipop. I had to pull out the battery almost every time after charging. Very annoying! I noticed though that my phone never froze in my car while charging. Thinking about the difference I realised that I keep my phone awake in the car while charging using Macrodroid (which I love anyway to automise all kinds of things). I made a simple macro which keeps my phone awake while charging and another one that returns the phone to normal while on battery.
While charging: Trigger: Power Connected; Actions: Keep Device Awake enabled & Screen Off, Constraints: None
On Battery: Trigger: Power Disconnected; Actions: Keep Device Awake disabled & Screen Off, Constraints: None
Off course there are alternatives available to Macrodroid that should be able to do the same.
My problems are solved, with and without fast charging. I hope this will help some of you as well.
same problem here
Ive tried turning off fast charging option on the powersaving mode
And also tried the option on developer mode, the "keep device awake while charging"
And even flashing dofferent firmwares from sammobile through ODIN and installed custom roms. These options doesnt resolve the issues on freezing while charging..
I think turnong off your device while charging is the only option..
Im using note4 N910C..

Thanks a lot, Mate. I'm trying your workaround now. Will report later if it works on my phone. BTW, so, are you sure it is a just a system issue? Definitely, isn't a hardware problem? Did you fix it, after your post -a month ago-, installing, for example, lollipop 5.1.1 or Cyanogenmod 12.1? I'm on 5.0.1, SimpleRom V4. Of course, mi device, N910C, is rooted.
Thanks again.
With lollipop 5.1.1 the problem is solved for me, even without this workaround.

I'm having similar issues as you guys. I found out that my phone will only perform normally when I charge it with my laptop USB port which I think is around 0.5amps. Anything above that, even a 1amp charger would cause the phone to freeze, reboot and turn off and not turn back on. The phone has been in repair 4 times and the problem is still there. Now every night I'm forced to charge my phone with my laptop which takes an age instead of the fast charger that came out of the box.
Currently my phone is still freezing and rebooting when I'm out and about and the only way I can get it to perform normally is when I plug it into my laptop. This normal functioning would only last whilst the phone is plugged in.

Random shut down

Today I picked up my phone up to send a text and it was no longer powered up. It had randomly shut down.
When I switched it on again I noticed it has lost its battery stats so looks like they were reset or lost. There were no user apps installed on the phone either.
Have you had a similar experience?
You could try to reset it or take it back. Could be defective!!!
Was it somewhere it was hot? Maybe the phone got too warm and hit the shutdown temp?
Honestly hard (read impossible) to tell you what happened. Have any more info / logs?
I haven't had any issues with heat or shutdowns at all. I get 6+ hours SoT every single day at 75% brightness. 100% stock and unrooted. I use my N5 for all the modding aspects like V4A, Xposed, etc. I want this one for Android pay.
Anyways my uptime has been running since I unboxed it on 11/9/15. No issues.
I actually had it reboot in my pocket yesterday on the first day i had it but I already installed a custom ROM so no testing it out now.

It was only room temperature. Here in England at 18cc so not too hot, but good point.
I read about the same thing happening with a N5 and it turned out to be a defective mother board.
Guess I should return today then... Bummer
If you just got it, might want to see if it happens again. I had one random reboot the first day and its been fine since.
My phone has started doing the same thing. Twice in 3 hours.
Same here...... 3 times reboot..... And now 2 times shutdowns.
I started having random reboots after I installed greenify. I tried several settings but had the same problem. It rebooted 5 or 6 times a day. I uninstalled it and haven't had any more problems.
I had my phone shut off yesterday and wouldn't boot until I plugged it in (it was at 80% battery). I then noticed that once it booted, it had deleted all of my paired Bluetooth devices.

Was just having the same problem but it was happening every 30 seconds to a few minutes. Deactivated greenify's device admin ability and now it's gone. Hopefully it stays that way, though if it comes to uninstalling it, that's fine since there don't seem to be as many background apps running on the 6P compared to my verizon LG G4.
Nevermind had to uninstall it.
Shut down, and a little warm
My nexus 6p shut down nearly every day, I just picked it up and it was shut down, I looked under battery and I could see it has been shut down for hours.. hope somebody knows anything about this problem.. I don't think a hard reset will help, because when I got the phone I installed all the update to Android 6.01 (MMB29M) and then I did a hard reset to make sure the phone was as good as it could be..
But maybe I'll try one more hard reset, just to be 110% sure

I'm having this problem too. It happens a couple times a day, and I think it always happens right after I pull it out of my pocket and try to unlock it. I'll feel the vibration from the Nexus Imprint fingerprint sensor, but then the screen doesn't turn on. So I try the power button, and nothing happens because the device is suddenly off. So then I hold down the power button to turn it on, and it boots normally.
Someone mentioned this happening with stock software, which makes me think it's a hardware problem, so we'll need replacement devices. However, I do have Xposed and GravityBox installed, so I need to rule those out first by removing them for a while.
I've had the phone for two weeks now and so far this happened twice.
The only two things that come to mind:
- enabling SRGB in the dev settings
- using a bluetooth headset
Has anybody pinpointed whether this is a HW or SW issue!?
How common is this ... I've seen ppl complaining in this thread and in Reddit also on random reboots as well
Thx
Still happening...
I am having the same issue. Did the reset to factory with no help. Phone was not hot, was sitting on my desk with 81% charged battery. This is the 3rd or 4th time in a week it just shuts itself off for no reason. Has anyone found anything??
I'm having this problem too, now on DVP 3 it's even worse. But I notice today that alarm clock works, but the screen won't. So I think is a SW related, the screen won't wake up, and after a while if you press the buttons the phone reboots. Anyone have e ideas how to fix this?

facing this problem since may security update, on purenexus , dirty unicorn and rr rom. dont know if it hw or sw or simply power button getting pressed accidently.
I think I need to reopen this post, coz' I've been facing thif problems for so many times this week so I google around and come to this post.
Has anyone come to a workaround or point out if it is software or hardware related yet...? If it's hardware then I think I'm gonna go for a replacement then!!!
If you haven't done so already, go vote in the "early shutdown" poll

CQATest app on Marshmallow Causes System Issues?

Thought I would share this here - though I believe this is effecting other Moto models as well.
The Moto app "CQATest" seems to be the culprit with major instability issues I've had since the Android Marshmallow update. Before the update, my phone was so smooth and fast. Then the update came, and I blamed it on Marshmallow. Screen response to anything was very slow. Sometimes completely unresponsive. If i tried to touch a notification in my notification bar, it might be 5-10 seconds later before anything would happen, and the app would open. Sometimes it wouldn't ever open at all. Or when Facebook did open, it might take another 10-15 seconds before it went to the item it had notified me about. The camera in particular was slow to respond - with visible lag whenever trying to take a video - or would just crash. The phone itself got into a fairly normal habit of rebooting itself several times a day. And on startup, sometimes it would take 3-5 minutes before it would finally get to the home screen. Simply unacceptable.
So yesterday I started Googling for answers, and ran across a thread on Android Forums talking about issues people were having with CQATest. I immediately went and found the app in the settings>applications menu, under "All Apps" - force stopped and disabled it, then rebooted.
Guess what? The phone boots normally again! And the general responsiveness and functionality are back to what it was prior to the Marshmallow update. I couldn't be more pleased right now - because I was getting very frustrated with what is a relatively new phone.
I'd be interested if others have experienced something similar? Or are having similar lag issues and try this solution to see if it works for you.
Mods - if this CAN be confirmed, it really should be shared with ALL Moto users who've been upgraded to Marshmallow and have similar issues. The Android Forums thread user was originated by someone on the Moto X for instance.
Thanks for your time and feedback.
Do you have any misbehavior since you've disabled CQA Test? Like something doesn't work... Are you getting better battery life? I think you should.
I have Moto X Force, didn't touch app and system is smooth, stable with great battery life. I suppose you have Turbo 2.
No apparent issues with anything else since disabling it that I can see. And yes, I'm on a DT2.

I have had CQA Test disabled before and after Marshmallow and notice no misbehavior. I also have been using advanced calling since i got the phone on launch day and have never had a problem with the call quality as others have.
CQATest not causing problems on my Droid Turbo(1)
I just got a refurb Droid Turbo on Marshmallow, and I've had others. I was experiencing some of those same issues that you described.... extremely slow boot and shutdown, and lag on launching apps or other screen clicks.
I just disabled the following and was amazed at the speedy boot time and responsiveness:
CQATest
Amazon (old app.... new one is Amazon Shopping)
Connect
Message+ (verizon sms)
Mobile Hotspot
After that first boot, I re-enabled CQATest and have rebooted several times since. It still seems fast and responsive. I've got a boot time of 35 seconds to the home screen, shutdown time of about 10 seconds.
Just to check, I disabled CQATest again, shutdown and started. The times are the same as above. I was hoping to explore the CQA menu, but haven't been able to so far. I've got USB debugging enabled, but not plugged into a computer. I'll look for answers in other threads.

My DT2 was suffering from slow-downs for a couple weeks, then suddenly had the random shutdown and power-only-on-charge scenario yesterday. I was getting ready to do a factory reset.
On one of the reboots, I had a notification about CQA test. When I acknowledged it, I got notifications that "CQATest wants to access this," and "CQATest wants to access that." I denied them all and started hunting up this app I'd never heard of. That's when I came across this thread. I disabled CQATest, but still had the problem. I then remembered that the "old" Amazon app had just updated. I force-closed it, disabled it, and now the phone is back to normal. I see no need for CQATest, so I'm leaving that disabled, but I firmly believe that the Amazon app was culprit.
EDIT: I may have typed to soon. The phone shut off randomly twice today, requiring connection to a power cord to bring it back to life. It does, however, remain powered up upon disconnection (for now?).:-/ I did not clear the cache after deactivating those apps, though, so we'll see if that does the trick.
..
Hi there.
Backstory: My DT2 is almost 3 years old. I already had to send it back to Motorola once for a camera issue, but generally I didn't have any major performance issues for the first year and a half or so. Then it started to decline. Namely OS was taking longer to respond, battery life declining. Then when it was about 2 years old it began the random shutdowns. For the last several months I haven't really had the random shutdowns, however, my battery has been pitifully horrible at holding a charge, and it will usually shut down before the battery indicator hits 0%. First it was around 15%, gradually getting worse. Now it often shuts down between 30-40%, especially if I haven't been on battery saver since disconnecting from the charger.
Now today, I ran down my battery within a few hours to about 30% and it shut off, which was not abnormal. However, upon connecting to charger and attempting restart, the battery indicator jumped from 30 up to 40, then down to 4. Got a weird screen before startup that looked like a system error screen and was afraid it was going into factory reset without my prompting it. Pressed the power key once briefly and the phone went into normal startup, but when it turned on, CommServer was stuck in notifications bar and battery indicator was stuck at 3%, similar story to the others in this thread and others.
I disabled the apps suggested by GeckoDad, and so far the phone can operate, but I've had it plugged in for maybe 30 minutes and it's still hanging out at 3%. Was planning to get a new phone soon, but had hoped to wait another month or two... Probably going to head over to Verizon this afternoon to see if they have any suggestions to keep my DT2 alive until I'm able to replace it.
