Hi there
I figured out how to change the long press home button to other 'Assist Apps' but really I'd just like to change it to a direct app shortcut (Google Voice Search).
Any ideas how to do this?
Thanks!

how did you change the home button?
search for home app in settings
Use Secure Settings
search for JB ExeNow on play store. This assist app can let you set which app to launch.
His other app JB Locknow is my favourite app for triggering lockscreen until Fingerprint lockscreen comes in (Better use other like Greenify to use other lock method otherwise you can do FP unlock from sleep - forced to unlock with pattern/code)

So basically I'm fed up of Launchers. I don't think I really need one and would rather use Gesture Search instead. I can't seem to find a way to set an app as my homescreen though. Tried Button Remapper, but even that only lets me remap to certain functions.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Wrong section.
As for your question, id think there are apps that allow you to set an app to launch when home is pressed.
If not a simple hack could be to take your favorite app and edit's its manifest to capture the home intent. Then press home and select that app as default.
I'm confused. How do you propose you will switch apps?
I want to be able to switch to the previous app without going through the recent apps panel.
I use a gesture app that can bind gestures to shortcuts or activities that the system recognizes, so I need a tweak that the system will "see" so I can map the gesture to it. Any recommendations?
Thanks.

Thanks, but it doesn't look like switchr creates a recognizable shortcut or activity.

Just hold HOME button and go to the previous app you want ?
Or use the multi-task, hold BACK button to display the multi-task bar and use the application you want to use.
SWIPE HOME BUTTON ..PERFECT REPLACEMENT FOR HOME BUTTON. .

Swipe Home Button is the gesture app I'm using. It does not have a native "previous app" function.
GMD gesture control ftw

Thanks, lesalloum.
GMD has mappable actions, but they don't play nice with the Swipe Home Button app or the s-pen.
would be interested in this as well.
On my old note 7000 i had set the home button to switch to the last app, to have multitasking for 2 apps and sidebar launcher.
Switchr is cool but beeing able to set the home button to switch to the last app would be perfect. All we need is some "shortcut" for that which we then can set with wanam xposed or so.
Any idea? It needs to be a shortcut, app, or activty which can be launched from outside. (or with gestures etc, whatever u like)

Exactly. There are apps that have a "last app" function, but it needs to be mappable to the user's gesture app of choice. Tasker actually has a function for loading the last app, but it's been disabled forever, and it doesn't look like the function will get dev support anytime soon.
Hello everyone!
Saw the S5 announcement few days ago and noticed the changes made to the button layout. I'd like to know if there's a way to remap the menu button to work as a recent apps button. And better yet if it's possible to assign the "menu" function to a long press. I've searched Google but all the alternatives I see are for HTC phones or for onscreen buttons.
Thanks in advance!

Look for an app called 'Xposed Additions'. It will do both the things you want.
Installed it. Tried to configure the remapping but it's not doing anything. I hit the "remap" and a window pops up that says key code and it appears that it's waiting for some input, I hit a button but nothing happens.

Forget it, just nailed it. Reinstalled, rebooted and all is working as I want to. Thank you!

Xposed Addition doesnt support KK.
Is there another way for this other than Gravity Box for TW Kitkat?

How about MenuBeGone, I'm running this on my 4.4.2 SM-N9005
And it got option to select apps that you don't want to have overflow button on them (like on Action Memo that 3-dot menu replaces delete -button, so you can't delete any memos.. but where do you need menu at all on Action Memo, so just uncheck it on MBC and you're good)
Edit: And it also can remap long press on menu button to show menu (while menu button is remapped to open recent apps)

Which build are you on? (also towelrooted?)
So you remapped menu button=recent and long press=menu. (like on the S5?)
I dont get what you mean with the Action memo though. But from the Description of the App I can tell that youre talking about the Whitelisting?
Thanks.

Yes, some apps get "broken" look when 3-dot menu is enabled on them (like contacts) and yes, long press on "settings" button opens menu, while short opens recent tasks.
About Action Memo see screenshot: menu button "hides" detelete if not whitelisted from MBC
Edit: to make it clear, that module enables "3-dot menu button" on all applications by default. From module settings you can disable that button on selected apps. That module also sets devices settings button to open recent tasks and long press to open settings (so by long pressing you can reach menu also on apps you have disabled to use 3-dot menu)

I got it, thanks. Tried out and its working fine. In Nova launcher the Menu button blinks a lot though - on long press.
There is a certain delay. But I think i will try xposed additions some time later but for now its fine i guess
Thank you!
Does anyone know a way to disable the home button long-press shortcut to google now? That way the home button responds a lot quicker
anyone?

You can either use a custom rom that has the function to remap hardware keys built in or use an xposed module. I believe Wanam has it built in.
I am not a big fan of giving Google its own button when I have a google search bar on my home screen and can just say "ok Google"
On my Note 4, I was able to program long press "home" to link to a shortcut - all I had to do was disable s-voice and i was prompted to select an action. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to do this on the S7 Edge.
For what its worth, the app shortcut I run is called "last app switcher" that allows you to toggle back and forth between two apps (very useful for apps that do not support split display). It even ignores the home screen, so you can go App1, home screen, app2 and then use long press home to get back to app1.

Only problem is the phone might slow down and get chuggy if you enable any accessibility options.
