Hi All
I have seen that the new 2GB MMC 4 card has been released by Pretec?
It is ment to be the fastest flash memory in the world. hear are the speeds:
Read: 22.5MB/s
Write: 18MB/s
Does any one know if this new MMC 4 cards will work in our XDA II's it says it should work in most SD/MMC slots around today... but regarding speed do you know if we would see any speed increases from SD with this new MMC???
http://www.pretec.com
from tests at least with sd cards the xda2 dont handle all that well compare to most other pocketpc's also worse then xda1 which dont use
the poor internal sd interface that xcale have
you can benchmark using pocketmechanics
and try doing a search people have been posting benchmarks they made with the xda series
Thanks for the reply Rudegar...
Does any one else know any info on the new MMC 4 cards???
well i would asume that they should work
but are they not a bit on the expensive side ?
i mean even with the extre speed if it would help
their price are pretty high
compared to some a few 256MB sd cards
and i dont have any serious issues even with my really really really
slow sandisk sd cards
Die MMC 4 Standard defines 4bit in parallel for data-transmission while AFAIK the MMC has only 1 bit data serial for data.
So it is likely, that it will not work.
Alex
but i'm pretty sure that sd also use 4bit in parallel
but i think the problem with the xda2 is that it's internal xcale interface is a mmc interface which is compatible with sd not the other way around
this is also one of the reasons the xda2 have a slower sd interface then xda1 where it have an external chip because the arm200 dont have that mmc internal interface like xcale400
So MMC are not necessary slower than SD?
Hi...
after reading about the new pretec card I went back to read the articles/posts regarding the difference between MMC and SD...
http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/handhelds/0,39001709,39008492-2,00.htm
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=7901&start=0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=5513&highlight=sd+mmc
So, if I undestand well now, MMC are not necessary (by definition) slower than SD (this Pretec is faster than the Panasonic?) and not necessary smaller than SD... the only difference boils down to the SD feature...
Rudegar (first all thank you for all the help you are giving in this forum... you are of great example! ) what do you use your SD card for? In particular, do you watch compressed movies on your XDA without any problems in term of speed?
Finally on SD vs MMC...:
-why do u think Pretec made the 2GB card MMC instead of SD?
-why do you think expansys is pricing MMC higher than SD (look at 256 and 1GB)
http://www.expansys.com/d_storage.asp
so it is not even true that MMC are cheaper than SD...
Mentioning Expansys... what are the best places on the web:
-with widest variety (expansys has recently cut a lot... there are no Panasonic etc... anymore...)
-with the past price (I want to buy one finally!!!)
Thanks,
Chris
i use my sd card mainly for music and a few programs that eat too much space and ebooks and a few video's mainly to brag
in terms of speed then i sometimes get nonsync audio on larger video clips
and when i tried journalbar i had sound clickings so i had to turn it off to listen to music (but i'm not 100% sure that was because of sd speed and not just journalbar acting strange)
and then of cause i use my sd for getting files from a pc that dont have a cradle or other sync cable
using the sandisk cruzer if it dont have a sd reader already
I find my battery goes down much faster with the 256Mb SD card plugged in - would a faster 2Gb MMC card require more power, 1. for higher transfer speeds and 2. for keeping powered up?
Thank you Rudegar!
Good point Madkat...
maybe some with a 1GB memory card who has tried the 256 before can answer us... but I think it would be easier if you open a new thread... something like "SD Card bigger = more power consuption?"
hmmm well. i am expecting my new xda 2 on sunday was thinking of gettin a new mmc on it. whts the max. it supports plz confirm. also whts the standard memory on the phone itself.
I have 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and 1GB SD cards. While I do not have any empirical data to prove it, I do not see any difference in battery consumption between any of the cards. BTW - I have 32, 64 and 128MB MM cards as well.
BRosenow: Any chance you could do a little testing, like leaving MMC & SD cards of same capacity in overnight, and a high capacity SD overnight, and checking the new battery % in the morning? Would be greatly appreciated
I'll give it a go and let you know what I have discovered in a couple of days!
How did the testing go?
How did you go with your testing BRosenow??
Cheers!
Thanks for reminding me. My testing was inconclusive, but there does not seem to be any consistent difference in power drain between the different sizes of SD/MMC cards.
I used the same procedures each night - when I got home from work I put my imate in the cradle to be sure it was powered up to 100%. At 10:00PM I inserted the SD/MMC card and soft-reset the device then placed it on the desk beside my laptop. At 6:00AM I turned on the device and read the meter (using the battery meter in SPB Pocket Plus 2.0) and recorded the % of battery power remaining. My first tests were as follows:
1GB SD 89%
512MB SD 92%
256MB SD 91%
128MB SD 86%
64MB MMC 89%
I was interested to see if the same card consumed the same amount of power each time, so I tried my 1GB SD again, and this time 91% was remaining in the morning.
Other things have kept me from continuing the testing, but my conclusion is that battery drain is not linear based on expansion memory size or type and is influenced by unknown factors, but the precision of the Pocket Plus battery meter could certainly be a factor.
Thoughts?
try leaving it in fligth mode
since variations in signal str's can cause more or less
power requirements depending on how much work the
gsm part is doing that night
I can see that your suggestion is a good idea, though I do not think it would make an appreciable difference in the outcome. A total spread of 6% with the given test parameters, particulary given that a distinct trend was not obvious, does not lend itself to indicate a practical difference in power consumption between types of cards or size of cards. (IMHO )
yeah i just talked about one way to make it a tiny bit less unpredictable
5% is always called the stat error margin and 6% is soo close i doubt there is any relation because size and power requirements
maybe the result would differ a bit if the card were being access'd
not sure doubt there is a world of difference because
these types of cards are used in a world of devices where many i'm sure have amp limiters on their sd power curcit to make sure that a camara malfuction would not kill the sd card
so if like a 512MB card required that much more power then a 64MB card
then many cam's mp3players and ..... would be incompatible with those larger cards
Agreed.
I was tempted to write a little script/batch file that would access a file stored on the card at regular intervals, but I just cannot conceive that there will be a measurable difference, so I didn't bother.
At this point I believe that access times are a more important decision variable in which type/size/brand of card to buy than is power consumption.
I bought a 16gb class 6 sd card, put it in the phone and did everything required to get the card to work. So the card was currently working I installed all the apps I wanted synced the phone with zune and had everything just the way I wanted it. I decided that I would reboot the phone (just power off so it says "good bye" and then power back on) and when I can back to the home screen everything was gone, and I mean everything. All my contacts, apps, music, was all set back to default. I checked the memory and it said that I had a total of about 15mb and about 10mb free. After some trouble shooting I found that it has an issue with rebooting with the memory card since I can reboot without the card and I keep all my settings. I am getting another card to try and see if its an issue with the card or the phone. I was wondering if anyone else has this issue?
after you insert the memory card, perform the format reset (hold down camera button, power button, and volume down). after the format is complete, power on the phone, go to settings and reset the phone from there. WP7 should recognize the additional memory now
I have done that twice already. I was testing some ideas on the issue. I insert the card. hold down vol, camera and power on. format the device and when i get to the main screen check the memory I have 22gb or so free. I import my contacts from sim. I power off the phone and power back on and its back to default, no contacts check memory and i have about 15mb of space with about 10mb free. I searched around online and others are having this issue but they have not found a single source of the problem. some work others don't, there was a mention that there will be an update from microsoft to fix the issue.... but i was not able to find anything on that.
I guess thats why the guy at ATT told me to be careful with putting in an sd card. I'm using an 8 gb class 4 micro sdhc from sandisk without any problems
That happend to me this morning, I had a 16GB Class 2 I think.. works fine in my nexus. the phone just went beserk.. rebooted a few times then the last time it rebooted, it lost all my settings and music and stuff.
I wonder if 16GB is too big? I'm gonna go a few days with out any card in it.. to make sure its not something else wrong with the unit or the OS
sd card prob
i talked to att yesterday and they said the phone isnt ready to accept an sd card that there will be a patch to fix the problem in the upcoming weeks. the phone is able to hold a 32 gig card but no card will work they said til the patch is released
Yea I'm running without the SD in my phone. I will just make sure to keep it backed up for when we can use SD cards and reboot.
Here's a thread from Engadget that verifies that those of use who have seen issues aren't crazy
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/09/...microsd-issues-atandt-not-installing-cards-i/
Thanks, Im running without the card and it works perfectly, I hope the patch comes soon i would like to put some movies on it.
Here is a good article on it from Paul Thurrott:
windowsphonesecrets.com/2010/11/06/samsung-focus-microsd/
Samsung said this in their press release Nov 4th:
- Memory:
- 8GB internal storage memory
- External microSD™ memory card slot up to 32 GB (class 2 (or higher) microSD card, card sold separately)
http://www.samsungusanews.com/2010/11/samsung-focus-available-to-att-customers-on-november-8/
Also this was posted in another thread. Too bad there are currently 3 or 4 threads on this issue. Microsoft has a KB on this now:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2450831
I need to purchase another microSD and before I spend the extra for a class 10 or 6 unit I thought I should see if anyone knows what the max. r/w bus speed is for the Milestone 2.
FYI Take it easy getting the card out, I removed the battery and as I was sliding it out I put more pressure then required on the vertical axis and the card snapped as it hit the halfway point. Oops, again
Unfortunately, it seems like M2 doesn't handle high classe microsd cards very well. I have a class 10 16gb sdcard and never got it working properly on my mobile. Don't know if it's a hardware or software fault. Others have the same problema, and there is a thread already about this issue.
Someone said that to solve the card you should format the sd card on the phone in the settings, and it makes sense. Make a backup and try it.

Already did that. The phone lags like hell when the 16gb class10 is in it, no matter if I format it on the phone, on the pc, or anywhere. I thought it was an issue like the one on the Evo, where the read and write speeds are limited through a config file. But it didn't work. It seems like the problem is with the media scanner, because when the sdcard isn't filled with music/photos, it runs well. But a 16gb card without music, photo or video is useless =[

Have you tested the phone with a different card/brand? Maybe MS2 is not fully compatible with the card you bought. Also you may test the card on a notebook with card reader to benchmark it. You know, Class doesn't mean much. Brand is much more important than class (be careful about fake sd cards sold on eBay). I assure you that a good brand class 6 sd card can outperform a cheap class 10 card.
Greetings,
Just curious if this happens to anyone else. Picked up my 64 gig card and placed in my phone to format. I loaded the card up with some music. After about 45 minutes, the card soft ejects and the phone reports that the card was ejected abnormally. I have a second Atrix, and it does the same thing. I place the card in my HTC Incredible, and it is solid. Doesn't eject itself.
Is this a software glitch or what? Would really prefer have that 64 gig card in my "current" phone rather than the one out to pasture...

64GB is probably not supported. I don't even think the 64GB existed when the Atrix came out.
I remember one of this forum use 64 GB card and works without problem. Who is vendor of this card?
Hi everyone. This is the 3rd time my phone has spontaneously unmounted my card, and this time it simply destroyed my microSD card. I have no music on the card (read that thread) nor have I yet had any re-boot cycle problems. I simply get a message that the card has been "unexpectedly removed". It has, of course, not been. The first 2 times I was able to get the card working again with no data loss. I turned the phone off, took the card out, rebooted the phone without it, then re-inserted it and rebooted the phone again. It was fine. This time, the card was simply dead. My phone wouldn't see it, nor would my computer. I changed out the little adapter card case and finally the computer saw there was something, but said it was not in "any known format". My only choice was to format the card. I formatted it on the computer and ran a disk check on it, put it in the phone and booted up. I got a little icon with a question mark, and a message that the card was either blank or un-formatted. So, I let the phone format it. Again. It now shows up in the storage description, empty and usable- so I don't think it's a bad card. The card is a Samsung 8 gig card. Note3 is stock, 4.3, Verizon is the carrier. Build JSS15J.N900VVRUBMJE
I want to add that I think it has something to do with the camera. I have the camera app save directly to the card. I've noticed that on all three occasions this has happened, its been shortly after I had a couple of odd photos. A portion, usually the lower third of the photo (if you think of a grid) is gray. Just like part of it is cut off. I auto-save my photos to google, and they look fine when I view them there, but on the phone, they were corrupt. One didn't show up in the thumbnail preview in the gallery at all. Also, the camera was taking an inordinately long time to save. All my photo stuff is stock...gallery and camera app...no editing software except what little bit is offered in the gallery.
Has anyone else had similar problems. Anyone have any ideas for a fix?
I would try another card. If it happens again, then it's your phone. Sounds like a hardware issue. So try another card, if it happens again, Factory Reset. If it happens after that with different cards, then I would send my phone in for a replacement.

FWIW, I have fooled around with moving microSD cards between:
(i) a camera (which uses a SD card adapter for the uSD)
(ii) a (POS) USB dongle card reader attached to a computer
(iii) same (POS) USB dongle card reader attached to a Nexus 7 OTG cable (rooted ROM or TWRP recovery running)
(iv) an older Android (Gingerbread) phone
In doing the above, all sorts of bad things have happened:
1) Occasionally the camera reports there is no card present (honestly, I think this is simply loose contacts when using a uSD to SD card adapter). Turning off the camera and re-inserting the card fixes this.
2) Loss of all files necessitating re-format after re-inserting card into Camera following a visit with the N7**
3) VFAT filesystem not recognized by OS kernel on the N7+OTG, but works fine with TWRP with same OTG+card reader (that is, some kind of strange kernel sensitivity)
4) Failure of Camera to recognize media after insertion into the GB Android phone - apparently due to many directories created at the SD card root. Card is not corrupted, but camera no longer recognizes it.
** this would only occur if I used the SD Card slot of the (POS) USB dongle card reader; if I plugged the the uSD card into the uSD slot on the (POD) USB dongle card reader, things were fine. Go figure.
So I guess what I am saying is that - based on my experience - your mileage is probably going to vary .
I was doing all this (albeit not with a Note 3) while I was travelling, and only had the Camera, Nexus 7, OTG cable, camera USB cable, and (POS) USB dongle card reader with me - no laptop or other computer.
Finally what I ended up doing - which seemed to cause the least amount of trouble - was to boot my tablet into recovery, and attach the camera to the tablet as an OTG Mass storage device. That is: the uSD card never leaves the camera.
I'm not up to speed about OTG on the Note 3 yet (e.g. is root even needed?), so I don't know what your options are there, but perhaps this gives you a couple of different things to try.
Just make sure you've got all your photos backed up safely off the uSD card before you start experimenting.
cheers
.
[Edit] I see I am guilty of not reading the OP carefully - you were only moving the card out of the Note3 to investigate what was going wrong, not as a matter of course.
Anyway, it could be a mechanical issue (intermittent contacts), or it could be a bad card. Although card class might make a difference for high-speed writing, you shouldn't experience corruption even if you are using a very slow (class 2) card - unless there are bugs in the kernel.
If you have another card to try out (before you rush out and start buying cards), that might be a useful experiment.
Question? SD Card from eBay? I had no luck with 3 64GB Class 10 cards off eBay got fed up and went to Walmart and got a Ultra U1 Class 10 64GB and haven't had a problem since. I have tons of music and pics on it no problems for the last 2 months. Lots of fake SD Cards on eBay from what I read.
Just my 2 cents
I just found this again...I got pneumonia shortly after posting the original thread. Thanks to all for replying...I just forgot about this. SD card never did work properly. Just got OTA KitKat so I'll see how that plays out. I'm reading there are even more issues with external cards now.

Absolutely no idea. It's a 2 gig older card. That being said, it didn't like my 8 gig card, which works fine in my tablet, either

I've had issues with Sandisk 64gb class 10 cards randomly locking on my Note II and III.....turns out to be a samsung issue according to Samsung.
