Edge lighting for whatsapp - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Guyz i saw the edge lighting looks great. It gives a great ring light around the edges when any message comes while the screen is off. But is it possible to get a green edge light when any whatsapp message comes? If yes, how to do it?

Mine does that by default...
When I get a WhatsApp message it lights up green.

I'm also having issues with whatsapp. It works when the screen is on, but not when it's off. But viber works both ways.

Got the solution myself.
Go to whatsapp> settings> notifications and use the setting shown in the pic.

problem with this setting is it keeps the popup on screen instead of a normal notification like Viber and default Messaging app

You can use light flow legacy to get it working for all apps if you want as well.

I am also facing the same problem in whatsapp.
The settings what is mentioned will popup the message dialogue box which I don't want.
There is a miscommunication between the WhatsApp settings and edge lighting (system settings).
Pls help how to fix

Workaround
I found a workaround, which works on my galaxy s9. Download the app 'light manager'. Open the app and add WhatsApp in the application window. Then go to advanced settings -> wake screen and choose WhatsApp.
In the settings of WhatsApp go to notifications and set the 'popup notification' to 'no popup'.
Then go to the settings of your phone -> Display -> Edge screen -> Edge lighting -> Manage notifications, and check on Light manager.
You can change the color in Settings -> Display -> Edge screen -> Edge lighting -> Edge lighting style -> color -> app color, and change the color of Light manager.
Now the edge will light up when you get a WhatsApp message.

Let's colors with multiple notifications

Hi all, I want to know what color is displayed by the led if there are two or more different notifications. For instance, if I have a purple notification for what's app, a green notification for telegram and a blue notification for calls, if I get all of those 3 notifications, what color should be displayed? In my case I noticed that is displayed the color of the most recent notification, but I don't know if it's the default beavhiour. I don't use any led management app.

Whatever has the highest priority, so sms or missed call notifications will be over snapchat. I think you can change priority in notification settings if you swipe down the panel

Yes, there are many color created by "mixing" the primary RGB colors. If you use third party apps like what's app, telegram, ecc you can choose what color do you want for every notifications. If you choose purple, for instance, you will see the led "divided" into two colors, blu and red, which are the colors that mixed together create the purple.

Yes, or you can use app like "light flow" which is able to modify even the default led color for calls, sms, etc (the default color is blue).

I don't know since until now I never used it, but we are speaking about a led light, so I think that is affect on battery is almost invisible.
About the led, I noticed that sometimes it doesn't blink even if I have notifications. With the first notification no problem, but if I get other messages from the same app, the blink disappear. What could it be?

@meyerweb spent a lot of time figuring out the correct Light Flow settings for the S7, and his directions on another site helped me get it working. If you see this will you share them here?
Here they are:
Lightflow Legacy seems to be working fine for me now, with AOD on or off, after following all the steps recommended on their web site. If you just install it, and expect it to work, you'll be disappointed. Here's what I did, IIRC:
1. Download and install the regular paid version. Don't bother to set up any notifications.
2. Download and install Legacy. It will alert you that you need to disable, but not delete, the full version, and offer to disable it for you. Accept that option. This is NOT the same as disabling an app in the application manager. Don't disable it in the application manager.
3. At some point, it will prompt to to enable the Samsung workaround. Choose that setting.
4. Do NOT turn on administrators
5. In device Settings, go to Accessibility, scroll all the way down, and make sure Light Flow Legacy in On.
6. Back to Lightflow Legacy: In General settings, check (or make sure these are checked): Enable Light Flow, Show LED in Priority Mode, Accessibility check.
7. Go to Lightflow Legacy and set up your notifications. For some apps you'll need to check the Switch screen on and Wake screen when in pocket options to get notifications to work. To avoid the issue with screen locking and needing to use a PIN to unlock the screen, choose "Phone screen default length" as the value for Screen on length. The drawback to this is that your screen will light up for about 5 seconds when you get a notification for these apps, but it's the only way to avoid the pin locking problem.
7b. Apps I know require these settings include Gmail, E-mail (Samsung's app),
8. For the built-in SMS app, uncheck the boxes for Monitor SMS Conversations, and check the options for Monitor notification bar.
9. Finally, go back to device Settings, choose Notifications, click Advanced, scroll down to Light Flow (not Legacy), and and turn off notifications. Make sure notifications are ON for Light Flow Legacy.
10. In device Settings / Display, make sure LED indicator is set ON.
With these settings, everything seems to be working for me, with the only drawback being the screen turns on for notifications from Gmail and Email. If you set up notifications for an app and just get the regular Blue LED instead of what you've programmed, follow step 7 for that app.

One should show up as Lightflow, and one as Lightflow legacy.
I would suggest uninstalling both, then starting over by installing Lightflow, then installing Lightflow Legacy. When you install the legacy version, it should ask you to disable the regular version. Let it do that.

No, I have the same name. Anyway I tried again and now I see only one app, but in the Accessibility menu I see two app so I don't know what is the correct one, besides I get two notifications for every app and I tried to use what's app and light flow for the other notifications, but the led doesn't blink when I get a what's app message. I had to unistall it until I get how to fix this. Some help would be appreciated.

Mate 8 Ambient display

Is there a way to enable Ambient display on the mate 8 or something similar so when I receive a notification, the screen will light up itself?
Also the notification light led is very dim, hardly noticeable compared to samsung devices.
On the dimness issue, have you tried turning off the auto brightness feature in your shortcuts pulldown?
Think for yourself. Question authority.

I use ZUI Locker to get lock screen notifications. Echo is also good. The screen lights up on notification and the duration can be specified.

correct, I discovered it but weird that it only works with certain lock screen themes and not with all, you must select the theme with (magazine)
FYI I installed xposed with both gravitybox and the ambient display module. Neither works.

Maybe im being silly but that looks like an App dependent notification - rather than a system handled
EG: facebook messenger - allows notification overridding screen - maybe thats just a text app that does have this permision in place
Re this i think in notification settings - in the more advanced section you can allow an app to override screen with notifications - tho i know in the new version od android they are eliminating this functionality

I spent 2 hours yesterday looking for tutorials and videos about that notification style and couldn't find anything. The default messaging app has that notification. I actually ditched Textra just because of that, until I find a way to to have it with it. I love that notification style, I really wish it could be enabled for all apps.
"Settings -> Display -> Edge Screen -> Edge Lighting" had been enabled since I got the phone and it's not the same thing as https://giphy.com/gifs/3o7btVlUtbdelu4L4I/html5
Or maybe it is, but the only application I could find that has that lightning effect is the default messaging app. Facebook doesn't have it, Textra doesn't have it, Messenger doesn't have it, SnapChat doesn't have it, and the list goes on and on..

I tried this, but I don't get any notification from apps like Gmail or Instagram. As a matter of fact I only see the small icon appear in the top left corner of the screen from them, and no pop-up or preview whatsoever. Am I the only one?
Only works on SMS for me it seems.
Shouldn't those apps give us some sort of preview like the iPhone does? I thought I used to have them on my old Galaxy S7 Edge.. but I might be wrong and got used to the iPhone now??
I got this working:
First disable notification for all apps you want to show with new notif style
in settings > notification
install SystemUI Tuner from playstore,
then in miscellaneous > enable Heads-Up Notifications.
scroll down and enable Power Notification controls.
now go back to notification setting, tap the app then slide to level 4 or 5 (peek enable)
the notification for the app should be in new style now (edge lighting enabled)
Now the trick so it also works with screen off:
install from playstore: Lightflow legacy
the key is the setting in lightflow must enable "Switch screen on" in the app setting
then you will have edge lighting notif for other apps too.
Mine works with Gmail & telegram & anything that's set up in lightflow.

Hey
Tryied the aplications Lightflow and Light Manager..
Good aplications but it's for changing led beside speaker...
I want to change the color notification from the led around the screen .. you guys dont have it ? o.o
An idea of what I'm talking... Led/Light Notifications
I don't believe we can't edit this led. Maybe a change of code in the rom or a mod..
we have option to deactivate this led in the rom options, soo perhaps we can access to is code to modify either.
when receiving any notification I realized when the phone screen is upside up the led appears to be thiny, and If you turn screen upside down the led light become more larger and change the color to green.
Ideas:
- Changing led notification colors.
- Changing the time of led stays on.
- Changing light effects (Breathing, Fading, Marquee, Pulse, Spectrum wave, Alternating)
- Change intensity.
Is this possible? Or some of this ideas now or in the future ?

I think that what you are talking about is edge lighting. That is a feature specific to the S8 line (I think). It is actually the screen lighting up, not an LED. I am able to get mine to light, but it is always blue. I haven't been able to change the color, duration, or pattern, but I haven't put much effort into it.
Look up Edge Lighting for the Galaxy S8 and maybe you will find some pointers on how to modify the behavior of the edge lighting. On my version of the phone there is a setting for Edge Display, but it only has a few options of when the lighting is used. No color, duration, or pattern options.

Yes, thats right...
But I don't think the light come from the screen.
Try to put phone with screen down and make a call for your phone with another phone.. When start blinking, put screen up and see the color "blue" changing to "green".
The light frame when the phone is upside down is more stronger, and when receive notifications with screen up is tiny.
I believe that is the maximus frame of the "led".
Yeah your thinking about edge light. That comes from the screen (only the edge it lit). There's no way to customize it (that I know of)

- Changing led notification colors.
- Changing the time of led stays on.
- Changing light effects (Breathing, Fading, Marquee, Pulse, Spectrum wave, Alternating)
- Change intensity.
Is this possible? Or some of this ideas now or in the future ?
