If you can't get Netflix because you're rooted you can try this. Edit the build prop as follows: ro.product.manufacturer Google ro.product.model Pixel XL2 (or Pixel 2 XL)
make sure you back up your build prop first. Reboot. Then search for this Netflix app as the one in the playstore still will not work even though it might install. Search on Google and you should be able to find version 4.16.1 build 200147 and install it. It works perfectly for me. Before editing the build prop, it installed but just had sound. I'm not responsible for any damage.
Whenever you update your ROM, you'll might need to repeat the steps. You'd need to uninstall Netflix first. Then reinstall it only after you've edited the build prop or it won't work.

Hello there. I'm not new to the Android rooting scene but am brand new to Nook. My Nook came Wednesday night and it was rooted Thursday night. My main goal of root was to install an app (Moon+ Reader) that would give me reading statistics such as time till end of chapter and till end of book. My wifes Kindle has this feature and I want it now .
So Moon+ Reader has a min-SDK version of 8 (Android 2.2). I decompiled and built it using APKTool 1.5.2 changing the min-SDK version to 7; but the app will not install on my phone or the Nook. My next step is to modify build.prop setting 'ro.build.version.sdk=8.' Now, I've modified other parameters in build.prop, but never the sdk version. Will this have any adverse reactions for the Nook? In my mind it will be fine and if the app installs and doesn't function I can uninstall the app and restore the backup of build.prop. Am I crazy here, is there another app that keeps track of statisticts? I've tried Kindle, but it did not work.

Well, why don't you find out what the problem is?
What does your logcat say?
Changing build.prop doesn't make much sense.
I may have misrepresented myself in my OP. The problem in question here is not the install of the modified APK, rather the modifying of the build.prop and the troubles (if any) associated with changing the min-SDK. Sorry I posted a thread on this because I have moved past getting this app working.

I just tried changing the minsdk in build.prop on my HTC One to try and install an 'incompatible app' and now I'm in a bootloop. Need to wait til I get home from work now to fix it.
Doh!
Android checks for incompatibilities between system version and app minimal required version.
Obviously, to make these congruent you can change either one.
The thing is, this will only have any utility if the app maker overestimated the level of API that they are using.
If an app is using Jellybean introduced API features no amount of lying is going to get that app to work.
So if you still want to play with lying about versions, do yourself a favor and modify the app, not the system.
Anyone have any luck modifying the build.prop to install (supposedly) incompatible apps from the market?
If so, what lines did you edit? And to what?
Thanks

I had luck in the previous build in modifying the build.prop. After modifying it to a nexus 9, I was able to install non-TV apps. However, when I modified it, the leanback play store disappeared.... I was stuck with the traditional play store you see when you use a tablet or phone. It was really clunky to navigate & I had to use my keyboard/mouse.
I modified:
ro.product.device=
ro.product.manufacturer=
ro.product.model
ro.build.fingerprint=
I had been using the Market Helper app on my Nexus Player to simulate other devices and providers to bypass the Play Store restrictions. It worked fine on the NP running 5.0, but it crashes on 5.1. I hope someone finds a way to bypass this market restriction and a way to re-arrange the icons on the Leanback Launcher.
Hi all,
I am thankful to zeroepoch for the root, it worked right away on W10.
But now my hassles start.
I want to make the AFTV4K my Living Room HTPC which displays weather information while idle. Also I would like to add NAS functionality via SAMBA. Besides checking Google Now, GMail, Calendar of course.
Now my first problem is getting the Google Play Store to work, the way it has internet access and it can download and install apps. Right now I got it installed following a German guide on aftvhacks.de but it has no internet. That is where that forum got stuck. They claim it is normal when not rooted. But I have root (SU).
Second one is mouse and keyboard. Anyone have an idea how to connect a USB keyboard and mouse?
And the launcher. FireStarter does not start after rebooting. Anyone got a status on that issue? How would I make Google Now the default launcher.
By the way, 5.0.3.1 is which Android exactly?
Best regards,
Ricky40

Hey Ricky,
a couple of these issues have been covered around here somewhere, If I felt like being a good XDA member, I'd link em to you, but I don't feel like hunting the answers down.
autorun FireStarter on boot:
You can use Tasker to auto run any app on boot, if you are not familiar with tasker, I recommend putting it on your phone and playing with it a bit before putting it on your AFTV2 it is just easier to work with on the phone until you are comfortable (I am by no means good with it, but I've been able to get it to do most of the things I wanted and just learned about autoinput and autovoice, which if they work, will be awesome on the AFTV2).
I have a wireless mouse working on my AFVT2 right now, and intend on validating the KB at some point today too. I am using a Logitech cordless wave MK550 (although that is the current model, mine is 10-12 years old and does not appear to have the model number on it)

I am connecting everything through an amazon basics 7 port USB3 powered hub

I've been working on getting play store working as well. I have a feeling it's because the Amazon build prop device id is black listed on Google play.
Should be able to change the I'd to the Google nexus player and get it to work but have not attempted it yet.

I have been working on this too. I tried replacing the DownloadProvider.apk and DownloadProviderUi.apk with an AOSP version and a patched version (patching the checkInsertPermission function) but Google Play Store still can't connect. Account manager works fine. Would be good to find out where it is being blocked.

Would we need to use a build prop device id for a 64-bit device to ensure we get the proper versions of the Apps (Optimized for 64-bit CPU)?
No we wouldnt

Good start.
I think the best bet is to pull apart ( unzip ) the xposed module that fixed play store on the fire tv gen 1 and see what files it modified and possibly just moving those to the ftv2

No need to look at HDXposed code from the .apk file. The source code is on github. Link to the source code here:

Just realized that there are patches for both DownloadProvider and ContentProviderProxy. There should be a way to patch those two files and replace them.

I attempted to install Play Store, but realized I was missing the libraries used for account authentication.
Code:
D/AccountManagerService( 518): bind attempt failed for Session: expectLaunch false, connected false, stats (0/0/0), lifetime 0.0, addAccount, accountType com.google, requiredFeatures null

W/Finsky ( 1847): [1] FinskyApp.getCurrentAccount: No account configured on this device.
You will need to install four apps for the Play Store to work:
com.google.android.gms.apk (google play service)
GoogleLoginService.apk
GoogleServicesFramework.apk
com.android.vending.apk (play store)
Look as step 3 here:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-the-google-play-store-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/
and at discussion here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/themes-apps/how-to-install-gapps-root-t2954372
This will allow you to add your Google account (and possibly authenticate purchased apps that you sideload) but Play Store is unable to connect. For that we will still need to patch the system files or install the Xposed module (which is not possible due to the locked bootloader).

My LG G4 has a locked bootloader and I was still able to install Xposed using FlashFire. Has anyone tried using that on Amazon Fire TV?
Edit: Looks like someone tried FlashFire without any luck.

Guys I REALLY need your help
i was trying to flash latest crdroid, when booted i lost access to netflix on play store and when i tried some other apps they say "this device is not compatible"
everything was fine before
when i verified in magisk .. everything seems fine ?!!
i cant even find netflix on play store
please help me
Your phone doesn't pass the safety net check. I am not sure if it's even possible to pass it and have root access.
Sent from my Note 7 using XDA Labs
i just facing that error, but after i reboot my device i did not face anything error like that again.
But if you still facing that issue, you can try this some step:
1. Log out your google account in setting/account (etc)
2. Clear data all data of google play store
3. Reboot
4. Open play store and login again
Let see
Have you tried to get the APK file from an APK mirror site? Also, you could install Aptoide. I believe there are several versions of Netflix in that store. It's a legit store.
Which apps? Magisk hide works for some.
I tried all those solutions but with no luck
When installing netflix 7.x it crashes but netflix 6.x works fine ?!!

Did you try changing your device ID? There are some apps you can use for this purpose. Offhand I forget the names of them tho. Many of them are in the Play Store. Read the reviews carefully tho, I don't trust all of those sorts of apps. You can also edit the build.prop file.
Hi
Like Google Play, is there an updater that updates app from APKmirror or others automatic?
There are but I would suggest aurora which uses Google play without an account
Forgot to mention, it can also be apps that are not on Google Play.
Ex for me is: Disney+, have to find it on apkmirror (or others), has disappeared from my Google Play....
Ofcourse other apps also, that is not on google play.
Disney + is still on Google play Maybe not for your country or something but aurora uses anonymity to show you everything on the Play store
Something happens after a reset of my Shield. So can't find it anymore.
I will try aurora, tried it now on my phone, looks great.
New to this, so 1 question: Is it possible to make update and install. Now I had to hit install/upgrade for each of the apps?
And maybe run in the background and update apps?
With root yes that will auto update
Thanks for the answer.
Haven't read or tried that in years. Maybe I'll check for the Shield, my phone is brand new so I'll have to think about that.
Is it still the hassel of USB, program and much code on the laptop, if I could ask?
Now it's just using a modified boot file. An oversimplified explanation is to just enable oem unlock, reset to factory settings, extract the boot file, magisk modifies it, put it back in the phone and boom you're rooted
Thanks, will try to find the howto for my Shield and maybe my phone.
