Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) - Zenfone 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Whenever I try to hook up the Zenfone 5 with my PC, I get the "unknown device" error, and Device Manager shows me the error on the topic: "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)".
I've tried just about anything, and nothing seems to solve it... Shut down/restart the PC, try a different USB port, remove power supply, etc...
Ah yeah, phone has access to bootloader and TWRP, but even in these modes I get this error when trying to connect via USB. Already tried different cables and different computers.

that's sad... here I could test both my USB ports and cables with 2 other phones: they're all working nicely. So now I don't know if my problem is the USB connector or the whole south board. I did try changing it with another ZF5 I have around here, and it worked (and suddenly, that other ZF5 isn't being recognized anymore)...

-you should try using another usb cable
-Do not turn on firewall on your computer
-try to update drivers
In most cases when a system loses a usb connection, once a successful one has been made, then it drops this is usually down to a power issue.
This could be down to a bad cable, or a loose wire in the cable or phone.
Try another usb port, or make sure you dont have many devices connected to you system via usb.
In most cases the more devices you have connected via usb the power it is taking possibly away from other usb ports that require that extra power.

[Q] Micro usb port

Hello guys, recently my micro usb port is not working properly, the pc's can't detect it(tried 4, mac, windows and linux os's) so is not the computer, changed 3 cables, so is not the cable, something must be wrong with the micro usb port, it can charge(usb, wall power) with no problem, but the phone is not detect by pcs, adb, etc, any idea what could be the problem? how can it be charging and the usb debbuging protocol or whatever isn't working, can I screw the transfer usb protocol? but the charge protocol in the same micro usb port could be still working, thanks in advice!

I had the same problem as you, it was impossible to make any computer to recognize the phone. Moreover it charged very slow, the phone thought that it was always plugged to the computer even if it was connected to the wall charger.
I did a factory reset, but the problem persisted. I called Google and they sent my a new phone, which now works perfect.

[NEED HELP] S7e not being able to connect to most PCs through USB

Hey guys. I've got an Exynos S7edge (unlocked) and I can't really recall the last time I actually connected it to a PC through USB. I bought a new SD Card and wanted to move my stuff and as I connected the cable, I got a message saying "The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it". Going to device manager it's listed under USB Controllers as "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" with "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" and "A request for the USB device descriptor failed." on Windows 10.
Seeing that, I tried to test it on my brother's PC (Windows 7 Home) and it still didn't work even with 2 different cables. When I got to school I tested it on the school PC and voilá, it worked with both my cable and a friend's cable. It told me that "This device can be faster if you plug it to a USB Fast Port" or something, but it worked to my amaze, while it didn't on my teacher's personal PC (All USB3.0 ports) . I've tried all the ports on his pc, my pc, and my brother's one. What makes the school PC different? I really want to be able to connect my phone again. Also, another S7 works on my PC and another phone also does.
What I've tried:
Uninstalling Drivers on Device Manager, editing Registry Keys, deleting OEM#.inf driver packages on cmd, restarting both the pc and phone, resetting bios, all usb ports on my pc (USB3.0 ones don't even report the device when plugged)
I'm really desperate.

same here, i think the usb port is broken, asked on service 20e cost the board anthe replacement costs about 40e
Similar usb prob
When i plug in i get the JUST CHARGING notification? I know all about usb debugging and developer menu.. Tried all the usb transfer modes.. Also tried various drivers and no drivers with win7..
Only possibility i think is bad wire? Tried two? Could be coincidental unless there is something I'm missing??

USB Type-c port : bugged or broken ?

Hello guys, here is the bug I experience
First of all i'm sure the cable isnt guilty as I tried two different cables, with one of them being new, getting the same result/bug
Whenever I plug something to my usb type-c port, it can ONLY and ONLY charge !
When i plug the phone to a PC, it won't recognize a phone is plugged ! It charges, but I don't have the window where u can choose between MTP, Charging,...
Of course I have enabled : USB Debugging, and switched from "Charge" to "MTP" in dev options
Even the USB otg doesn't work (with "OTG stockage" enabled ofc)
From times to times I could connect the pc to the OP5, but by plugging / unplugging the cable like 20 times... And now it's worse as it doesnt work at all !
It used to work perfectly in the past , is it possible the system can bug to the point this bug appears ? Is the type-c port broken ?
I have the same problem, the USB port can only do slow charging. It doesn't connect to PC/Mac and doesn't dash charge either. Taking it to service center as i'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue with the USB port.
Try downloading OnePlus USB drivers on pc you connected device to. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=673368273298966498

MTP should work without those.
No it's not an issue with the drivers. The phone used to get detected fine and would do dash charge properly earlier, it suddenly stopped working.
I visited the service center, they confirmed my suspicion, it was an issue with the USB port module. A hardware issue where some of the pins on the USB module stopped working for reason, and as a result phone wouldn't receive connection from the cable. They replaced the module for me and the phone works properly again.

Windows 10 HP laptop doesn't recognise the phone.

Guys I'm trying to connect my phone to laptop but phone doens't get recognised in the laptop. The device makes sound and so does the laptop. No pop-ups in either of devices. The phone starts to charge but no option in the notification shade to change the mode of connection though. I've tried with turning on the usb debugging too, but no help.
Laptop pups up an error message later that the "LAST USB DEVICE YOU CONNECTED MALFUNCTIONED. WINDOWS DOES NOT RECOGNISE IT".
Is this falut of my charging port or of laptop? Or windows 10?
I've tried connecting to all other ports and with different cables. My all other android devices connect though. Please help.

I've had this issue with pen drives and my USB port had an issue(short circuited).
Check these :
Try running devices troubleshooter from control panel.
If the phone is charging properly by using the same cable , it's probably an issue with the laptop.
Is it on pie?

Sir I've tried debugging thing already and set the option to MTP. I've run troubleshooter too but windows couldn't identify and solve the problem. I'm guessing the problem is with windows 10. So I've decided to installed windows 7 in a different drive. Maybe that'll solve the problem.
Phone is running on Oreo.
Note:- I think micro usb has four pins. One among them might be a ground pin. One must be for charging and other must be to transfer data. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I had several times repairing phone with broken micro usb connector, it has 5 pin to be soldering on it. 2 for the power and 3 for data transfer. If the cable is fine for other devices then maybe the problem is not from the cable itself. I had an experience like that case before that if the notification from the pc says connected device is malfunctioned, that may caused by when u first time connected the phone to the pc, the device is disconnected when it still trying to instal the driver. When u connected the phone to pc check on the device manager, if u see "!" icon there, then theres the problem, ur phone driver not installed properly, u can try manual instal of device driver from there.
Last usb device you connected malfunctioned. Windows does not recognise it
"USB device not recognized. The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it” always appears in Windows 10 and Windows 8.
And the reasons for the issue contains:
The currently loaded USB driver has become corrupted or unstable
USB drivers need to be updated
USB drive may be entering selective suspend
USB has some damaged files or bad sectors
USB drive has not been formatted correctly
For different reasons, you need to take different measure, but you can directly format it via AOMEI Partition Assistant to solve the usb device not recognize issue.
The USB port itself was damaged. So I got replacement and now the new phone works fine with same laptop. Thanks you all for your replies.
