I Sold my OP5, just because at times it had slight jelly effect or less than smooth scrolling, can be stuttering, i was sensitive to it, may be because it was pointed it.

Well, if this rainbow effect turns on at angel close to 90 degree, then it shout not be an issue, as i yet to use my phone at this extreme angle. Amoled will shift to blue/green or colors at this angle anyways.
I think jelly effect, stutter in scrolling, early screen burning, non uniform screen at any color straight on are things i guess which can cause issues while using phone.
If screen is issue less, and phone has no major flaw/issue. It can be a decent buy for those who like stock UI, cleaner looks and can tolerate or make use of Android's benefits.
Android Central mentions no jelly effect in their video review of the phone (guessing written as well).

That's very good, hopefully this phone may not have any major wide spread issue with anything, i sold my A5000 two weeks ago for 430$ and i am without a phone, as i can't find any options other than 5T. I don't like Pixel 2 XL design as well as screen vulnerabilities.
Are you selling or keeping your A5000? Sadly i was one of the view who could notice screen jittering in A5000.

Lol. This again?
Just to put this to an end, I used the phone upside down and it has the jelly effect, so this phone is perfectly fine and the screen is assembled the way it should be.

Well I'm very picky when it comes to screens and this is easily the best screen I ever had on a phone. Perfect colors, good viewing angles and 100% uniformity, no purple, pink, yellow or whatever hue I had on all my previous phones.
I noticed the jelly on all op5 phones I've seen but the 5t doesn't have this "feature". It's a great display.

Im sooooooo excited! I have been waiting for the extra $ since the TF was talked about and was finally able to get it today at Toys R Us!
Its charging now so don't want to play with it till its fully charged.
Question is:
What do you recommend I do the first few hours after is being charged? Any particular applications I should try? Should I root right away? If so what Rom should I install? What defects should I be aware of/check?
Any other suggestions will be appreciated ;-)
I know its a silly post, but I kinda got overwhelmed/intimidated the first 10mimutes after I turned it on!
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
You would be wise to never root until you are SURE that you have a good unit.
Check the speaker balance.
Go into a dark room and put on a total black jpeg and this will allow you to look for major light bleeding or white "blobs" in the middle of the screen.
Update to the newest Honeycomb ( 3.1 UNROOTED FOR NOW )
The play with it for a few days. If you are happy THEN AND ONLY THEN should you root and heap the full benefits of the Asus Transformer.
1. Look for dust under screen, light bleed (particularly on corners and the lower left) and dead or stuck pixels. Make sure you ramp up brightness to the max before checking.
2. You might also want to note sound quality (is one speaker louder than another) and overall volume before applying any updates.
3. Now go and check if there are any updates using the Check for Updates option in the Settings.
4. Afterwards, check sound again. Note any changes to overall volume and balance.
5. If by this point you've hit none of the issues so far, I guess someone else will have to help you as to what you should do next. I haven't gotten this far since I had to send mine in to get it butchered within the same week I got it.
If however you find any of the issues above, cry and keep it to yourself or bring it to TRU and hope they do an exchange. Some fanatics on here will tell you QC issues don't exist and you're part of a conspiracy to pressure Asus into adopting better QC.

There are certainly issues with every product out there, including the Transfomer, but I think sometimes they get overblown a bit. Like the light bleed, mine has just a little, but is it enough to bother me? Nope. In fact, from what I can tell almost all IPS screens suffer from some amount of it (look at the iPad 2), it's just the way it is. Mine has been awesome, and I haven't had any major issues, maybe I just took more time out to "smell the roses"

I can accept light bleed if it was about a 2-3mm line of gray on a black background on the edges of the screen but in my case the band was inches, not mm. That's not overblowing it, that's reality. I don't overblow things, I call it as it is. Inches of gray screen on a black background is bull****! It kills the image quality and ruins dark movies.
If you haven't had that you wouldn't understand and of course the people who do have massive light bleeding look like crazies to the people who don't who think they're seeing the same thing we're seeing. I assure you it's different. How do I know? I have a friends unit to use as reference and the level of bleeding on his pales in comparison to mine.

I've compared it to several iPad's as well, it definitely looks great in comparison, and we have all the extra goodies like HDMI out, MicroSD Slot and the Keyboard Dock I have to wonder if the light bleed is similar for all for the IPS Screens, but it just happens to bother some more than others, though I'm sure some did escape the factory with bad screens, like all hi tech devices the more complicated they get the more chance for mistakes. I have the Keyboard Dock and this is my laptop, in fact I sold my laptop to help pay for this, and I haven't looked back, this is just more fun to use PLUS I can leave the keyboard when I don't need it or the extra ports, try doing that with a laptop
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!
Couple of questions:
I have MIUI as my daily Rom on my DInc and really got used to organizing my apps in different folders. Does honeycomb offers such feature? If not, how do you manage to organize your apps?
Also, im looking for defects on my TF and so far i cannot notice any light bleeds. How do i see whether one speaker is louder than the other? They both seem ok, but cant tell for sure.
Thanks!

To be fair the speaker being unbalanced is a software issue (additional zero was added) not hardware. This can be fixed by rooting.

After using the Idol 3 for a couple of weeks, I have the following observations.
Pros:
1) It is a very nice phone, especially considering the price.
2) Battery life is on par with most flagship phones if not better. I can get 5 hours SOT without turning anything off or down. (Considering most people on other phones are complaining about battery drain on Android 5.01/2 and everyone is hoping that 5.1 will fix this, our battery life may only get better)
3) The camera is quick taking shots and straight forward to use. (quality not so much)
4) The OS is simple with very little bloat ware.
5) Very good sound with the front facing speakers.
6) The phone is thin and light for a having a 2910 mAh battery in it.
7) The screen is very bright in direct sunlight. I use it outside a lot and enjoy using it without trying to find some shade.
Cons:
1) The camera is fast but only takes decent pictures. Although for this price one can't complain to much as it is on par of flagship phones a couple years old.
2) Double tap to wake seems to be a constant issue for many (myself included).
3) Only 1 update in the last 14 days. I was hoping for Alcatel to push out some updates quicker but only time will tell how well they do.
4) The phone isn't blazing fast but doesn't lag too much either so this is kind of neutral. Clearly the recent apps is choppy and slow but most performance is decent.
5) Very little in the way of accessories. I bought an ipad screen protector and cut it down to fit.(I can get 3 out of 1).
6) Development isn't there. Not sure if it will be as maybe the phone isn't popular enough or the root/boatloader issue my be part of that as well.
I had the Zenfone 2 and LG G3 and sold them both in favour of this phone. I have had almost every flag phone out there and thought I would play around with some lower priced devices and have been pleasantly surprised with this phone so far. 3 things for me to keep the phone as a daily driver for a little would be, the DTTW issue resolved, some development so I can have some fun flashing some roms, and update to Android M (or at least to 5.1 for some software improvements and extra battery life, but 5 hours of OST is good for me. I most likely will be keeping this phone as my backup once I do move on and will certainly keep an eye on Alcatel for future phones.
I agree 100% with what you said. Just waiting for an update to 5.1 (with some bug fixing) and I'd be very happy.
As for the camera, I'm coming from a Nexus 4. So this is a huge upgrade. I actually find that it takes pretty decent pictures in sunlight.

I watched a review that stated the Zenfone 2 camera blew the idol 3 away.
My personal experience is completely the opposite. The Zenfone 2 camera was slow at focusing and unless you picked a shooting mode the auto setting was the worse choice.
I was spoiled with the note 4 and G3 cameras.

5.0.2 is full of bugs, yeah. Not sure why phones would ship with that in the first place but meh. To have a smoother experience, enable dev options and set all animation scales to off or .5x.
In europe evertything runs just fine animations, app clearing, everything even in 5.0.2, what's your build number?
The design is what sold me. Super light weight and very good battery life. Speakers are very good and the lcd is better than my nexus 5 was. The only downside is the lag which im thinking is from the gpu drivers and 5.0.2. Custom roms could fix this.

Hi All,
I just got my new Oneplus 5. I am loving it. I feel there is a mild jelly scrolling effect with my device. It is not as severe as we have seen in some YouTube videos. It is only noticeable only if you pay more attention and observe more closely. Is it normal or there is some defect?
I am bit worried, should I ask for replacement or a bug fix in future will do?
Looking for suggestions.
Thanks
It's normal. It's because the display is mounted upside down. Some get used to it others don't.

So if it is happening with all the units of this phone it doesn't make sense to ask for a replacement
Guess not. Every OP5 has it. Let your eyes and brain get used to it. In the first day i experienced the same thing, but after a while it's gone (i mean it's still there, but for me it's gone) you know what i mean.
It's not like in the viral video but it's reaallly noticeable for me, much more than I was expecting. From all the mixed reports of it I do wonder if OP is using different panels for different manufacturing dates, where ones have more jelly effect than others. Mine was manufactured on 2017/06/16 and is the 64 GB version.
We'll see how it goes within the next 14 days but it's driving my OCD crazy. More noticeable in some situations than others, just finding it weird everything stretching out slightly when scrolling whereas this didn't happen in the OPO.
I guess it depends fully on your tolerance.

Mine is a June build 64gb and the screen jitters when scrolling. I put a replacement request in. Still waiting to hear back from OP. Hopefully I get a newer build because it looks like users of the newer midnight Black 128gb builds aren't complaining about this.
Yeah that's what I thought too but I didn't find it justifiable buying the 128 GB version at least for me... I do wonder if they have different panels on more recent builds. Wouldn't like to go through the return process but this is really a weird effect.
Had mine for a month now. Havent noticed any sort of jelly effect. Not even if i try really hard to produce it.
I read that OnePlus used OnePlus3 displays on the OnePlus 5 to save money so it's unlikely the phones with different build dates have different displays since the displays weren't even made for this phone in the first place. If you believe the rumors about the OnePlus 5T you should probably return the OnePlus 5 while you can. Knowing OnePlus the 5T will have the display that this phone should have had in the first place.

Mine is September build as written on package. Still have the jelly scroll effect. I don't think if newer panels are not having this effect.
With all respect, I don't know where people see a mild jelly scrolling effect. I'm using my 128gb 8gb for 2 weeks and I didn't seen any thing like that.
I can the effect in a YouTube video of it but its very hard for me to notice whilst using my op5
built in june. absolutely no jelly effect here. i came from lg g pro with ips screen, and i didnt see any difference in the jelly effect. same with my wife' s op3.
64gb.
i had this phone for around 3 months now, the "Jelly Effect" is present but i really don't notice it all the time, or i can say i don't care about it, at first i thought it was some feature in the phone until i saw some people complaining about it.
it's really not annoying at all, perhaps you can say it's not noticeable when you get used to it, not like what they say in the reviews.
Forget those reviewers. just like they did with the screen of Pixel 2 XL, they all are attention seekers. The issue is there on the 1st gen of Pixel but nobody gives a f***. They all are following the trend to get views.
Btw there is no need to create a new thread for your opinion.
People simply like to exaggerate.
The jelly thing is a very minor issue which doesn't affect usage at all.
If the iPhone had a jelly effect, people would be demanding it be on other phones too.
I don't think of it at all. It was blown out of proportion.
It's a clear defect and should not be ignored cause of denial or other childish excuses. It should be treated as a flaw so that it don't happen again. Never understood why you guys try to downplay the problem, how else is oneplus going to realize they f**** up with the display?

No jelly effect at all here. compared with my LG G pro (ips screen) and wife's OP3, they look the same, nothing to ''ruin'' the experience, some princess here.
The effect is on every device, regardless of people who claim to not have it.
It is massively overblow, and this effect can also be seen on displays mounted the correct way round too if you go looking for it.
Great example is any tablet, especially iPads. Scroll up and down quickly and you'll see one side of the screen move before the other side does.
What's worse is the amount of idiots and tech bloggers (almost as bad as the idiots) claiming that oneplus saying it was "natural" was a insult. When in fact, it's perfectly fine.
The real issue with the oneplus 5 is just how jank and stuttery the OS and many apps are, especially if you've ever used a pixel or even a note 8.
The battery life is tremendous, but at a cost of smoothness. The CPU drops back to its lowest frequency so quick that the whole device is plagued by micro stutters. Hopefully something that will be fixed for Oreo but wouldn't count on it.
If you think a Note 8 is smoother than the OnePlus 5, then you've done something wrong with your OnePlus 5
No way in heck Touchwiz is smoother....

People simply like to exaggerate.
The jelly thing is a very minor issue which doesn't affect usage at all.
If the iPhone had a jelly effect, people would be demanding it be on other phones too.

This is untrue, people didn't demand loss of signals in iPhone 4, scratched body in iPhone 5 or bendgate in iPhone 6.
this is an issue, which is serious, for some its not noticeable, they are fine with it, they are lucky, those who are obsessed with UI and neatness in a software they are annoyed. Some more, some less. But its a Mistake/Issue or Bug. I don't want to change phone for that as next phone will have their own issues as well. 3T was Fault free though as was 3.

It's a clear defect and should not be ignored cause of denial or other childish excuses. It should be treated as a flaw so that it don't happen again. Never understood why you guys try to downplay the problem, how else is oneplus going to realize they f**** up with the display?
It is literally the main reason why some people didn't buy the phone, me included. You learn from your mistakes and move on.

LOL only if you notice it. I've seen 7 OP5's (including my own) and I can't see any "jelly effect". of the other 6 people that have the phone, none of them see it on any of the other phones either. So I don't think it's a real issue number 1 and number 2, I think the effect is generally made apparent/noticeable while video capture to show the effect. I think the camera picks up the effect that teh naked eye really can't. Much like how recording a monitor and the camera is showing the refresh rate that you can't see with your eyes.

Hmmm, Maybe you've done something wrong with your OP5? My OP5 is as smooth as my Nexus 6P was. LOL and no, the Note 8 isn't any more smooth then the OP5. Please, it's Samsung with TW (that is better these days), that statement is absurd. I've also seen the Note 8 as a friend of mine bought it and he's pissed that a $1000 phone doesn't perform like my OP5 at $500.
I've been using the phone since 2 months now and I hardly notice it
It's there for the first few days after having the phone but after you get used to it, it'll lile disappear and you'll hardly notice it.
I somehow got Oneplus 5 after using iphone 8 plus a week ago mainly due to heavy weight?
Tired of changing phones, i want to know, are you guys got use to with odd screem bounce issue? not a big deal? or does it annoy you still after using it for a while?
Never really noticed it on mine. Still don't.

I would concur, it is in my opinion vastly blown out of proportion.
I was expecting something horrible when I go the phone and really I was looking for it. Noticed it for a few hours, then not at all.
Many reasons to maybe not like this phone, but this is not one of them for sure.
I personally don't notice jelly effect but apparently it is caused by the screen being fitted upside down to be able to clear the camera
I see it occasionally. No problem for me.
The whole thing was blown out of proportion by many.
They talked about this jelly effect as if it stabbed them in the eye.
It bothers some people a lot and other people barely notice it or don't see it at all. Presumably you can see it if you asked the question. If you don't get used to it after a couple days of using the phone then it probably isn't going to happen.
I didn't notice this whole jelly effect on my unit.
I can only see it if I pull up & down continuously in some apps, but who do that?
In short, if you want to see it you'll see it but in daily usage you'll barely notice it

Well, you are one lucky dude, i mainly keep noticing it, mainly because they had pointed it out and made an issue with it, otherwise i may had never notice it, but my eyes slightly feel it, can be due to aging eyes as well.

Yeah, if you take it as fancy feature then its fine, for some it is soar for the eyes.

That makes sense, mostly one will see if they will look for it, may be, or if they have it in back of their mind.
I noticed it for a few days. First 2 days it was really kind of annoying (because I knew of it, and psychologically I kept looking for the jelly scrolling - I even considered returning it).
After about a week I got used to it, and since then (have had it for almost 2 months now) I can't really notice it even if I try.
Indeed it seems blown out of proportion, considering other phones like the Moto Z2 (Play?) seems to also have it, and got away with it.
Looking at display issues that my former LG G5 had (horrible image retention - could avoid it with adjustments to the color temperature after rooting), the LG V30, Pixel 2 XL , the slight Jelly Scrolling the OnePlus 5 has shouldn't put anyone off from buying it.

Oh well I personnaly don't feel any reason not to like it !
Maybe the camera is not as good as advertised, but if you want a fast phone with good battery and very active development, then you look no further.
That last line I wrote was to say "to each his/her own, but jelly effect is really not an issue"
If you catch my meaning
Recently acquired the OP5, and while I do notice the jelly effect, I don't find it unpleasant or distracting. It's not very noticeable either.
I don't notice jelly effect.
Also I have read that some guy thought it was a feature of OnePlus and kinda liked that.
Don't really notice it after 2 months of usage
