So I have a U.S. ASUS ZenFone 3 Max ZC520TL. Got it rooted with a patched bootloader using Magisk Manager that was originally factory unlocked via ASUS's download. Atm though for some reason my Stock Recovery does not want to load. Whenever I try to access it, my phone immediately reboots back into Android. Is there anyway to flash TWRP to it? Using SP_Flash_Tools presents the BCOM error 2004 and it is unable to flash it. I'm concerned using fastboot to flash it as apparently I need a scatter file to do so?
You need to flash with fastboot doing the command: fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
I attempted to download the TWRP recovery that comes close to matching my model, which is here: https://twrp.me/asus/asuszenfone2720p.html but after flashing it using fastboot and attempting to boot into it, the phone still reboots after the screen goes blank and then boots normally. Also TWRP does not have a recovery specific for my phone, only one that is close.
OMG.. You can't flash other devices recovery's you need to flash a TWRP only for your device.. not close..
Well at the moment, I don't think this recovery issue is something that happened via my tinkering as I have been only able to get into the factory mode (which is in chinese) since I got the phone, and recovery never worked (always "bootlooped" when I accessed it even before my flash attempt). Plus I don't see the usual Android logo, just the ASUS logo and instant reboot back into system with no error codes.

So, I tried unlocking ZE520KL with ASUS Flash Tool, and after 25 mins of flashing image I disconnected the device. Now, the device only boots into factory mode and recovery mode. Bootloader doesn't work and internal storage isn't mounted when I use the option Install update from SD card, but MicroSD works.
I had the latest update installed before this happened. I tried the latest firmware from the site and installed it via recovery but it shows signature verification failed. The same thing happens if I try to delete the first few lines of the updater script in the META-INF folder.
So help me guys, which firmware should I use and how should I use it? Even ADB sideload didn't work.
Try fastboot flash 'recovery.img', the same version from a firmware you're about to flash than flash the zip from recovery

Thanks man. I figured it out though. I flashed the stock MM ROM and it worked. BTW, are there any ports of the stock camera? I really need the stock camera

Can you enter and stay on fastboot steadily? You need to obtain the whole stock ROM along with fastboot and recovery image from the very same package. Fastboot flash the fastboot and recovery image then flash the ROM from recovery.
I stupidly tried using franco's app to flash cleanKernel on my rooted phone on 9.0.11, it failed of course and now can't boot my phone. I'm able to fastboot boot twrp.img but I'm not sure what is needed next. I've downloaded the full 9.0.11 ota file thinking something in it (or all of it) needs to be flashed from twrp. Afraid to do anything at this point for fear of losing data. Any tips are appreciated.
I've downloaded mauronofrio's rom-stock-fastboot utility but see he says it will clear data. I'm assuming all the .bat files will do this. Any way to avoid clearing internal storage?

From bootloader screen, using fastboot boot twrp.zip results in OP going to "Fastboot Mode" screen...and staying there. The zip is pushed to the phone but won't boot into TWRP. This started after I stupidly tried using franco's app to flash cleanKernel on my rooted phone. It failed of course and now can't boot my phone. My phone recently updated itself to 9.0.11, fyi.
Any ideas on how to fix this boot issue? Is it just a matter of flashing something from the full ota 9.0.11 file---some img file or something?

Wouldn't you want to be using a twrp.img not .zip?
fastboot boot twrp.img
Boot twrp from the img and then flash the zip once twrp boots?
I was able to recover...thank god. Just used mauronofrio's flash utility. Removed the "-w" flag from the flash-all.bat file and all is good.
Stuck on Fastboot Mode screen once I run fastboot boot twrp.img

Hi, I have just got a OnePlus 6T and I am getting this same error even though I am using the twrp.img - when I run fastboot boot 'twrp.img' it sticks on the Fastboot Mode screen.
I have the .zip on the phone's internal storage along with Magisk ready to install but I can't get there.
I did manage to get into Recovery once in the last 3 hours but under Advanced the only 2 options I have are to reboot to fastloader of reboot to recovery which just takes me round in circles!
Have tried everything I can find/think of right now and am no further down the line
Any help guidance will be greatly recieved as nothing I can find on the threads here seem to help
Thanks

When I think about it, it seems that the twrp.img I am flashing is not taking. When I go into recovery I get to choose 1 of 3 languages, I choose English and then I just get the 2 options as above - thing is, the font, layout etc. make it look like stock recovery and nothing like TWRP I have used before, no TWRP logo etc. Nothing

Ok.. can you get into TWRP? Is so reflash the stock rom.. the once it has flashed do not reboot, go back to install and flash the lastest twrp .zip do not reboot, go back to install and flash/install magisk, once it installs then reboot to system... It will take a bit... Once it reboots check your Magisk manager you may need to reinstall it, reboot to TWRP and reflash it.. reboot to system band you should be good to go...
TWRP isn't there

Thanks and apologies if a two posts appear from me, I submitted one about 20 minutes ago and it isn't showing.
The issue is more than that, even when I try to flash the TWRP image it doesn't seem to take. The phone gets stuck on the 'Fastboot Mode' OnePlus flash screen and hangs there.
I have to hold the power and vol+ keys to get the device to restart and I then receive a message saying 'bootloader unlocked, data insecure etc.' and to press the power to stop the boot process. If I leave it the phone boots into OOS10.3.3.
If I press the power button I can get to recovery mode (albeit there is a password screen there which I have never seen on other devices I've had). I put my password in and choose English. I am then given the two options; reboot to fastboot or reboot to recovery. There is no advanced option to allow me to install TWRP or Magisk zips, as a matter of fact I don't get any TWRP at all, it looks like stock recovery.
Is the phone defaulting to stock recovery and not the TWRP image? That is what, in my very non-expert opinion seems to be happening. Is that possible and if so, any ideas how to fix?
I have completely flashed the phone so it is on stock OOS (10.3.3.) so can start afresh. It is a refurbed 'like new' so could that have anything to do with it?
Thanks for reading the long post - am wondering if there are some other tools I need use to change how it boots?

Ok.. are you using the latest TWRP? If you want in the guide section you can you the msmdow like ad tools to reset you phone to stock, and retry again..
THIS. I have the exact same issue. In short, I have the T-mobile version, and was able to unlock successfully. I am using twrp-3.2.3-0, and I have the img and zip in the same folder, same way Techibee does on Youtube. I then type "fastboot boot twrp-3.2.3-0-fajita.img", I get the "OKAY... OKAY... Booting... Finished" response in console. Then, the Fastboot screen appears and never leaves. I have done this 3 times now. I kept tweaking the process, but I'm nervous to keep debugging.

Hi there,
after a normal shutdown, my xiaomi redmi 4 prime is not booting anymore.
it is stuck on MI Logo. I can enter fastboot and download mode. Phone is NOT rooted and Bootloader seems to be locked, but fastboot flash recovery seems to work. But all my hope to get a twrp started failed until now. I REALLY need the files from that phone. If somebody can help me, i will pay you money if you SUCCESSFULLY help me recover the files.
Beside, adb mode does not more work, after trying to fastboot flash a twrp image. But in ADB Mode i was in sideload mode, where no commands like pull did work. Oh and i never turned od developer mode i think. I will not stop believing there must be some person on this planet who can rescue my data.
thanks for any help.
I believe adb and developer mode are irrelevant since they work from within the system. One option is to make twrp recovery boot and copy files from it, but since you tried and failed you could try something else, but as last resort since I don't remember if it saved my data.
Since your bootloader is locked you cannot flash boot partition, but you can flash every other which cold fix your system. You should find EXACT same rom you had and extract partitions you want to flash (you have tutorials online, I don't remember, think you just extract them). If you try to flash complete rom with locked partition, process will fail.
fastboot flash system
fastboot flash recovery
fastboot flash data?!or whatever (or not data if your files are there)
Hope I gave you another perspective..
I have been on a journey trying to go back to my T-Mobile OnePlus 6T back as my daily driver but the official updates killed the device for me. I have been successful in flashing it to the international version and now the device is on A9. I am trying to get it updated to A10 but in order do that (does not take OTA updates or can not flash within the updates app) I have to flash in recovery. Right now it is on stock recovery so I am trying to flash TWRP.
The problem is now that everytime I run the command " fastboot boot IMAGENAME.img" the phone restarts (as expected) and boots into fastboot but stays stuck in the Fastboot Mode screen.
I tried different TWRP images (older and the most current version per https://dl.twrp.me/fajita/ ) but I keep getting stuck in the Fastboot Mode screen. The last thing I was able to do without issues was unlock bootloader using fastboot.
I just need to be able to flash TWRP on the phone so I can still the final stock image so I can go back to using it as my DD.
EDIT: Disregard everything I fixed it. mods, please delete thread.
EDITR 2: Disregard that last edit lol Yeah I still need help. I am now tryingto flash twrp on a second 6T and the issue described above still applies.
You can try this version. Also try unplugging the USB after it reboots. You aren't getting any crash dump screen? So it should be working.

Tried your image and still same result. I am running following command
Code:
fastboot boot TWRP-3.6.1_11-OP6xT.img
The command window outputs the following
Code:
Sending 'boot.img' (34964 KB) OKAY [ 0.747s]
Booting OKAY [ 0.092s]
Finished. Total time: 0.860s
The phone then reboots into Fastboot Mode logo and stays stuck there. I even tried unplugging the USB after it reboots as well.
I even tried using the flash command instead of boot but no success.
How about fastboot boot recovery? Should be able to get into recovery somehow. Doing fastboot flash of twrp will mess up your boot partition but either way you still should be able to get into recovery somehow. There is the msm recovery tool you can use as last resort but it will relock your bootloader
Actually fastboot doesn't let you use boot recovery command I don't think. Only adb. But once you are in fastboot can't you choose to reboot recovery with volume keys?

When I am in fastboot mode, yes I can choose recovery but it takes me to the stock recovery. I do not have a option to flash any zip files there
Maybe you need a twrp for Android 9 since that's what you are on. But fastboot boot twrp should just take you there. Either have to find one that works or go msm route. Maybe windows not reading it correctly also. You using CMD or PowerShell?

I tried both CMD and PowerShell. I am going to try a A9 version of twrp
EDIT: I am using twrp-3.6.1_9-0-fajita.img (which I assume is for A9) and still get the same result. Even tried a different usb port.. not sure what i could be missing. I also did the instructions as advised straight from twrp's website.

Curious did you have the twrp file in same folder as adb and fastboot?
