Getting old features from yore like Pie Controls, Expanded Desktop, etc. - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Just to preface, I'm not a developer but I'm trying to learn more about how developing ROMs works.
Back in the day, mostly on my other phones (e.g. LG G2 and older ones) with some of the crazier custom ROMs like Resurrection Remix and DirtyUnicorns, they'd be chock full of weird features that I imagine the majority of people never used but I loved them. Most notably Pie Controls and navigation bar tweaks where you could set 3 to 5 targets in a ring that you swipe up from the home button to jump to apps or actions, from any screen. Probably the single most useful tweak in any ROM I can remember.
I know Oreo roms are still in their infancy, but how does adding features to a ROM like Pie controls and expanded desktop etc work? Is there any way at all I could compile a flashable zip to add those myself, or or those things that have to be baked into the source of a custom ROM? Just haven't seen them in any new roms in the past couple years.

Well ok Nougat, but what about any Oreo ROMs?
I'm really wondering if there's a way to modularly add entire feature blobs like that to any given ROM. Kinda Xposed-style.

No

LMT launcher is great for pie controls. Doesn't display all icons correctly in Oreo, but still functions otherwise, and developer says an update is coming soon.

[Q] Custom Software Touch Controls

Is there a way to replace the software controls with custom ones? I'd like it to be glossy like Blur but add my own buttons such as menu and search, is that possible?
Using the Paranoid Android ROM you can modify the colors of the bar and also add your own buttons such as menu, etc.
It should be possible on quite a number of ROMS. I believe Cyanogenmod, Carbon, AOKP, ParanoidAndroid all have features to move around/customize which ever soft keys you would like. However, I am not sure whether the color feature is still around, I know Cyanogenmod doesn't have it yet, but it was in earlier versions. ParanoidAndroid has that feature. AOKP did in 4.1, but not sure about 4.2 would have to check, but that should give you a relatively good idea.
The moral-just rearranging icons almost all Roms should have it. Color that will only be on very specific ROMs, most famously ParanoidAndroid.
Hi,
Take a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34452548 .

Can confirm that AOKP has color control on 4.2+ builds

[Q] Confusion! PA/PACman/Rootbox/Revolt Differences

I just flash all of these roms today to verify, and I'm sure everyone has noticed but why does PA/PACman missing sooooo many options than Rootbox/Revolt?
-Alternate toggles setup which is missing the "favorite user" option and is not user friendly
-Lacking customization for pie options
-No option for Navbar/status bar transparency
Its really confusing because RootBox and Revolt roms have all the options that every rom on this thread have accept one thing.....PA. Which means there is no options to use hybrid options/colorPAoptions/PAdpi Settings, etc.
Its really confusing why there are two very distinct bases that Devs are using for roms,is there a reason why these differences can't be combined? Does anyone know if there will every be a rom that runs that same base as Rootbox/Revolt but have PA?
Yes, I usually avoid these types of post, but gosh does this not bother anyone else?
well theres toggle customization, thanks to cm,
theres customization for pie,
and theres options for bar colors including alpha that naturally go beyond anything else because of hybrid
but still - we're trying to keep things simple and minimal. thats our direction. if rootbox or revolt wants to go another way thats their choice.
i just personally do not enjoy roms that are heavy with options, i dont think thats a good thing and it conflicts with android which is still whats making 99% of the whole.
as for pie, i want something thats quick and easy to navigate. i dont want quick access everywhere i lay my finger on you know? like ... you switch on phone, theres shortcut options, shortcuts in your navbar, shortcuts on your google now circle, shortcuts in your notificationpanel, shortcuts in your togglepanel, shortcuts clenched on poor pie-in the worst case via multirow, shortcuts here shortcuts there. who'd like such a frankenstein of a rom? i sure dont. and if theres roms that truly cater to those needs - well more power to them and by all means, go that route.
most people on xda, and i am very happy about that, still value coherency. and they'd rather see new features getting made piece by piece. its the same with music. i like albums and bands. but there's some people that prefer ready-made collections and top10-samplers or whatever. i dont judge that, its a simple matter of preference.

Thank you for the valuable response. I was kind of expecting a lot of bashing from normal users. So I guess I have to how they combine these features.
Haven't tried Revolt, but I like the Pacman rom and Rootbox is good too

[Q] Recommend a 4.4 ROM with stock LG features? (e.g. knock on, etc)

Hi there,
Seeking some advice on a ROM. Hate the look of stock LG G2, just installed stock-like kitkat on my old GNex and saw the google experience launcher with transparent everything, DO WANT. However I'm afraid of losing some features of stock LG software. Maybe you guys can recommend some ROMs, or if it's best to stay stock to get all the features I want, recommend some mods that will give me all the ROM features I want?
Things I NEED
Knock On/ Knock Off (LG feature)
4.4 Stock "Look and Feel" (fonts, transparent bars all around, appearance of time and battery and notifications bar, black instead of white setting menu, etc, you get the picture)
Always listening on the home screen, possibly the lock-screen, pretty much anywhere I can have it all over the UI (as per 4.4, not LG)
Recent Apps button instead of a menu button (as per 4.4, not LG)
Open apps from the lockscreen with apps icons already visible when looking at lockscreen (not the style where you hold finger over lock icon to see a choice of apps in a circle, and then have to swipe a specific direction. I used to have that and didnt like it as much as I like LG stock way of actually showing icons without you touching anything, and you swipe the icons, not a lock towards the icons)
Circle battery type thing on status bar that shows percentage
Things I haven't tried/am not sure about but might want from stock LG software, and might not want to lose flashing to custom ROM
Better stock camera?
SmartShare from the gallery app? (says it uses wifi/bluetooth to stream content to other devices)
Beam/DNLA/I don't even remember what it's called or what app I found it in?
Quickremote
You tell me please? I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff I've yet to discover that I might want (are any of LG's apps e.g. notebook useful?)
Things that are cool but not really necessary
Themes and a ton of extra features -- used to use AOKP and they had a decent amount of extra feature, not too few like CM, not too many like other ROMs where my head just starts spinning from all the features
Other
I'd really prefer not to have to wipe all the time, CM's OTA update feature was awesssooome when I had CM on my GNex, but CM is a little feature-lite for me, I mean it was good though, that's just a minor complaint. But if there's something better fitting my criteria above I'll put up with having to wipe to flash updates of the same ROM in the future if its necessary. I just never understood why OEMs can push OTAs to people and never make them wipe, but for custom ROMs (updating new versions of same ROM) I have to re-set-up everything every time
A lot of this stuff has been addressed already. Most ROMs have knock on built in, but not knock off. The work around is downloading an app that turns the screen off, and using a gesture control in another app (such as Nova Launcher) to double tap the home screen to turn the screen off. Though personally, I just have screen off set to my nav ring so I can access it from any page I'm on.
There's a flashable install here on the forums some where for Quick Remote. Works fine on AOSP ROMs.
As for 4.4 stuff, I have no idea.

How did you do that? I nowhere find a setting to change anything in the navigation ring.

4.2/4.3 roms with halo notifications

Hello all,
Can anyone point me in the right direction for a very stable rom either 4.2 or 4.3, that comes with Halo floating notification features and also the other usual usual goodies such as customising the status/nav bar, theme choose etc.
AOKP would be perfect, however that does not come with the Halo notification features.
I would prefer avoiding PA/aospa as that is a bit too feature packed for me.
I am currently using the Mahdi 4.4.2 rom which has the features I am looking for for, including the floating notifications but I can't seem to settle with KitKat for some reason.
Thanks.

Rom features most important features to your needs

I am asking this as I am about to start my own rom project for nexus 6p
I am also open to rom bases
What are the most important Rom features to you?
What special features do you like?
What version of root do you prefer?
Do you prefer certain kernel features?
Professional flashaholic here, so here I go:
Must have:
Long press power button for torch
Double tap to sleep anywhere in lockscreen
Battery light (led)
Do not wake screen when plugging charger
Animation speed control (all possible values, not just 1x, 0.5x, etc...)
Status bar ticker
Playback control using volume rocker
Reorient volume buttons on screen rotation
Ambient display advanced customization (especially brightness)
Fingerprint authentication optional vibration
Status bar clock customization
Quick pulldown in quick settings
Fingerprint unlock after reboot
Really nice to have:
Pulse visualization (both in navbar and lockscreen)
Volume panel customization (especially timeout)
Quick unlock
Navigation bar settings (DUI)
Full substratum support (especially if using default teal AOSP color)
All the Pixel goodies (nav bar animations, sounds, wallpapers, launcher, etc)
Root: I say let the user decide, some people prefer SuperSU, some prefer Magisk.
I've used almost all of the Roms here in XDA and other places, and right now, Resurrection Remix is the one that has everything I want, which is not to say that the other roms are bad. In fact, I've enjoyed every single one of them, and I'm immensely grateful to all of the developers here. I usually donate to them when I'm especially happy with a rom. It's like having a new phone every two weeks or so.

Don't include any root! That way is easy for user to stay unrooted if they wish, or to easily flash supersu, magisk, or whatever else.
Redsmith pretty much covered all the bases on a good rom. I'm currently on nitrogen rom 7.1.1 and using substratum. So theming is important to me

Battery charge led, volume rocker change tracks, oms ?
I was also going to ask does anyone want viper mod baked into the rom?
I wouldn't, but that's just me. I'm not a big audiophile. My $8 earbuds from Walmart sound amazing to me.

I mean it would be cool to have viper arise . But I can always flash it afterwards. Can you make the ROM 7.1.2 based or can u make it the 8.0 Dev preview rooted?
Also pulse on the lockscreen like back in the cm days. Flashlight hold power button.. immersion status and nav bars

To base it on 7.1.2 the source code needs to be released. Since it's still in beta I highly doubt the source has been released yet. If you want 8.0 rooted, why not just install the preview and flash SuperSU?

I have my developers account with Google so. I'm. Looking to build this. Up for 8.0 I want to make sure it's a daily driver I don't want to. Be releasing a bug filled rom.

I might as well actually answer your question in the OP while I'm here. Must have features for me:
- AOSP base
- Long press power for torch with screen off
- Adjustable screen time out settings for lift to wake gesture
- Ability to adjust nav bar height
- Double tap lock screen to sleep
- Volume rocker media control
- Custom quick settings rows/columns (ex: 4x4 layout rather than the stock 3x3)
Anything else is just a bonus but would still be appreciated. I think things that can be flashed like like root, Viper, etc should be left up to the user.

I appreciate all The feedback from all of you this is a great start
When I get a stable version I will.mesaage the guys interested in helping me. Test
As you can make a rom do you think you could possibly help me out with a mka bacon issue. How much ram do you use? As for features/apps I would say include adaway, wakeblock, supersu, viper4arise, substratum and oms support and camera nx and ex kernel manager and for features just copy Resurrection Remix.
I will pm you
I guess I'll throw my hat into the time, as I'm always down to test new ROMs!
Some must haves for me:
- Alarm/Wakelock Blocker
- Navbar dimension tuner
- Pixel icons / Color (I think it's a framework thing)
- Lock screen double tap to sleep
- Lock screen font change
If you need an additional tester I'd be down! Flashaholic, so I could give it a good run through. If somehow you were able to bake a lot of the features mentioned into 7.1.2 I'd download in a heartbeat and donate what I could. Easily
