Should I Pay Off My Amazon Ads? - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Please don't blast me if this has been discussed but I just realized that I can pay $45 to remove the Amazon ads. I know there are ways to remove ads but I would like to know if this purchase will remove the inability to unlock my bootloader? Sounds like a long shot but I was wondering if Motorola will recognize my phone as "ad free" and not associated with Amazon. Thanks!

I could be wrong but from what I've read, paying to remove the ads will still not allow you to unlock the bootloader.

Have you been a long time Prime member? If so, call customer service and complain and be very stubborn, but not angry or derogatory, and insist the ads are a big pain and ruin your experience with the device... I don't know if it still works, but if you have a good (and long) history with Amazon they may disable the ads at no charge. It worked for SOME users on the G4 when it came out, not sure if it still will work, but you might get lucky.
And no, it will never allow your bootloader to be unlocked, your IMEI is blacklisted by Moto permanently. Although you might be able to get Amazon to return your ad supported version, and exchange it for the standard one, even if you are outside of your 30 day return window. If you catch it on-sale the price might be a wash (you could use that as part of your argument to get the ads removed too).

Great idea! I've been with them for a long time. I'll give it a shot.

I only see the 32GB option.
Edit: Now i get 64GB. Niiice!
Well that sucks, earlier I got in on the Moto X for a penny trial thing, would have been nice to have had this one as an option.
This should have been available from the beginning.
Excited to see this, but it jumps to 499 at checkout and there isn't a 64GB developer edition. It kinda gives me a reason to get a custom one I guess. I'm also under the impression that this means that X+1 is going to take longer to release than I thought or Motorola has a buttload of MotoX shells to get rid of still. I gotta see how much I can sell my Developer edition for and I guess I'll decide to either jump on this or wait for the next one.
Edit. I went back to see if they fixed the checkout and realized that it isn't an error. $449 is for republic wireless. I guess they are subsidizing it slightly.
The Moto design site starts out at $449 for the 64gig version, then the select carrier page bumps you up to $499 for the GSM Unlocked version. What's that about?
It's $50 cheaper for the Republic Wireless version. Same for the 32 and 16GB versions too. It's been that way from the beginning I believe.

From what I have read the T-Mobile version can be rooted just as easily as the GSM Dev Edition. Unlocking the bootloader on the T-Mobile phone voids the warranty, unlike on the GSM Dev Edition. Other carriers may have the X locked down more.

Motomakers are what these are...no? I was sure they can't be unlocked.
And definitely republic wireless can't be.
I'm waiting on the 64GB unlocked GSM version from the 2 week trial. The unlocked gsm is the same as the T-Mobile version and the bootloader can be unlocked.

So, correct me if I'm wrong: the GSM unlocked version (which still made me choose the AT&T/T-Mobile option to get the unlocked version) can or can not be rooted? I know it can be bootloader unlocked, at least according the Motorola bootloader unlocking page (I chose the T-Mobile version there and it shows as bootloader unlockable).
I mean, it's entirely possible that these trial phones will have their specific IMEI numbers (if you ordered one for the 14 day trial) added to some other entirely different internal blacklist that won't let us unlock them for the trial period, that's my concern.
I fully intend to do everything possible with this phone when I get it - that's what a trial period is for, and when it's shipped back (if it doesn't live up to my expectations) they can easily just reset it in a few minutes time (bootloader locked, restored to factory state, even alter the IMEI and program it with an entirely new one if they want, it's their damned device).
As long as I know it can be rooted and then bootloader unlocked so I can play around with some ROMs, I'm cool with that and could decide to keep it. If not, then I'll just toy with it and send it back - again, it's just a penny so it's not like I'm breaking the bank or anything.

They could see you unlocked the bootloader and send it back to you and charge you. If unlocking voids warranty, which it does on anything that's not a dev edition, then it may affect returning it too.
A possibility anyway.

It depends on the carrier.
Verizon and ATT moto makers can't be unlocked. You are right, Replublic Wireless can't be unlocked.
However, Sprint and the "GSM Unlocked (ships with T-Mobile SIM)" variants can be. Some other carriers can too.

If you do anything that voids the warranty while you are "trying it for $.01" they will likely refuse return.
If you are buying a Moto Maker X, unlocking its bootloader DOES void the warranty just by completing the action of requesting the code from Moto. You are submitting unique info to Moto about the phone you are unlocking, so expect they will know you have requested the unlock code.
And as for Moto can"easily" re-lock the bootloader, it depends on if its an eFuse or not. Using mFastboot, we can get the bootloader status to unlock and relock, not LOCK. If its an eFuse, moto likely can't set it back to lock without replacing components.
Can you get a developer edition for a penny? If so you do keep warranty for unlocking. I cannot verify whether or not they will accept the return, for that I would call Motorola and request confirmation in writing that they will accept the return even if you unlock the boot loader. If yes, get it, test it, if you like it send it back and order the Moto Maker one you want.

The "Try Then Buy" FAQ clearly stated that the regular non-Moto Maker version, the Moto Maker version, and the Dev Edition were all supposed to be available for that offer but I tried several times to get the Dev Edition and each time I punched in the promo code they sent me, it wouldn't apply the discount and the price remained $449 and change. After maybe 5 attempts, I decided to contact them using their "instant chat" support and the first time it said I was number 18 in the queue so I waited 14 minutes and when I got to being number 3 in the queue, it kicked me out and said their instant chat support was offline.
I waited a minute, reconnected to the chat support thing and it said I was number 27 with a wait time of 35 minutes so I said the hell with it and just ordered a Moto Maker edition, hence my question(s) above about rooting/unlocking.
For 14 days it's my phone, that's how the deal goes, so I'm going to use it as if it were my actual device, that's the only way I'm going to know if I want to actually keep it - I'll fire off an email to 'em when it arrives to clarify things, but if I do end up rooting it and unlocking the bootloader and then they refuse the return of the phone, well... guess I'll be getting it for free, who knows.

I'm sure they won't let you have it free. Lol
And yes, you will void the warranty.... And therefore probably void your chance to return it.
Remember.....us rooters are a very....very tiny fraction of their customers. They don't think of us when they make deals, or rules or promos.....most will try it, not change a single thing and keep it or return it. Then WE come along, void its warranty and try to return it. Nope....not happening. You own it now. Pay up. Or bye bye imei. And now you own a pretty paperweight.
And.....if moto is smart, which they seem to be, any device on this promo....no matter the carrier....won't be eligible to unlock on their site. Didn't think of that one....did we. I'm betting they won't be eligible to unlock on motos site, not until the deal is done and you keep it. ?

Also....come on now....you don't NEED root to know if you like a device. Lol
Very valid points KJ. Sad thing is I've had root since day one and I barely use apps that require it anymore. With the recent updates and the ability to disable apps without TiBu my battery life is fine so the only thing I've used root for is kernel tweaks.
Try the phone, if you even remotely like it without root, you'll like it that much more with it.

I'd die without root. Lol. Luckily I research first and would never own a device I can't root.
Yeah, I don't get the attitude about its mine for 14 days. Its yours to TRY they are saying. Taking it apart physically or unlocking boot loaders and messing with the system is not something they will be happy about. They'll just laugh, send it back to you and say congrats on your new purchase. Lol.

I would never own a phone without an unlockable boot loader. Until the Nexus5 all my phones had CM and I bought my phones based on having a stable-ish build. I understand your point.
I think I should teach many of you in here something my father taught me as a kid.
If something isn't yours return it how you found it. If you break it, you replace it.
Otherwise known as "you break it, you bought it."

Removing Amazon Advertisements

Hey everyone,
I've seen a couple of people mention that if you don't register with Amazon, the lock screen doesn't display ads. I'm wondering if there's a way to remove the ads after registering. Would factory resetting do it? Because I'm willing to do that if it means no more ads.
Thanks for the help.
Pay the $15 to Amazon. They subsidized the tablet because of ad revenue. Don't be cheap.

This is a forum for questions. How is this a helpful response? Obviously, I can do that. Clearly, I'd like to find a different way.
Go to Amazon support, like you'd do for a issue with a order, I'd talk to them using the online text chat but you could try calling. Talk to them kindly, mention why you don't want ads and if they give you a hard time ask for a supervisor or a manager to look at it. Try to be as nice as you can possibly be and they might remove the ads for you free of charge. They'll ask for the email attached to the tablet if you had signed on with a amazon account. Your millage may vary so try a few times.
This is what I did twice and they did remove the ads for me. If I wasn't near broke and trying not to be broke at the end of the month I might have payed the 15$ but I could not.

Amazon Prime Edition

Is the version from Amazon with ads able to be rooted and rom'd to get rid of the annoying bloat? I'd love to save $60 but I don't want to deal with the advertisements and especially being unable to root/unlock/rom is a non starter.
TIA!
The bootloader cannot be unlocked currently and thus cannot be rooted. It will likely be a long time (if ever) before Amazon provides a method for unlocking the bootloader for it's version.
No.

can get rid of ads and maybe root later on, but bootloader can't be unlocked so no custom roms, as someone who owns one i recommend not buying just isn't worth the saving
I figured as much, I didn't think Amazon would leave it open but I wasn't sure.
Definitely not worth saving $60 to lose all the functionality plus adding ads.
I wish the 32gb in the US came with 3gb of RAM but that would probably cannibalize the sales of the 64gb one. I have a Nexus 5x worth 2gb and it isn't quite enough, my girlfriend wants to switch to Android from an iPhone 5s but as cheaply as possible, looks like the $300 g5 is my best option for now.

if that's the case she would probably not need root or custom roms so maybe should go amz, u can remove the ads like i said, but then again who knows what will happen after update...
I want to custom rom it to add little things like one handed mode etc.
Not essential but definitely important enough to be worth $60 even without the ads.
Mods please delete
Why delete? You just saved me the headache of going with the Amazon variant. I'm going to save up the additional $60 and buy the fully unlocked version because of this thread. This is the only place that I found a definitive answer about whether or mot the Amazon variant bootloader could be unlocked. Thanks!

I completely agree. I got the Amazon version as I was hard up and my old phone just quit sudednly on me but I should have waited and spent the extra 60$. The adds aren't obtrusive but I miss the things that are possible with a rooted phone.
I'll probably try to pawn it off on one of my older family members that don't appriciate a rooted phone anyway and get myself the same phone without the adds.

Sounds like for what you want, the standard is best, but I also want to quickly point out that Moto Actions has the screen shrink feature built in for one handed mode and the default keyboard GBoard has one handed support built in as well.

brilliant i might do the same actually

OK, I screwed up buying the Amazon Prime E4. What's the best I can do?

I'm upset that I wasn't told the bootloader was locked when I bought it. It only seems fair to disable the ads, per this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3631406
But what else can I do to customize this (otherwise OK) phone? I've unlocked the Dev mode, disabled/uninstalled some bloatware. Everything else I know how to do requires root, so no Xposed, Titanium, or Tasker. Still feeling cheated -- I researched enough to know to avoid the Verizon one, but I didn't expect Amazon to lock the bootloader.
Any suggestions?
You can return it to Amazon if you want, just tell them it has ghost touch issues (two of mine did) or that the fingerprint sensor doesn't work for apps (most apps don't use the way it does it).
Thanks, nice to know I have that option!
send it back and buy the no ads model. best buy also has the unlocked models on sale.
Can you confirm the no-ads model has an unlocked bootloader?
The sources I saw simply said that Verizon (and now Amazon) were the only vendors to request that moto NOT provide unlocking codes.

Yes, the no ads model has an UNLOCKABLE bootloader.
Thanks much!
A few notes to answer my own question: I have found some hidden apps exposed by AnyCut, including the Marshmallow Easter Egg (yep, on a Nougat phone), a Wifi calling toggle (that won't work), Testing menu, IMEI/serials lister, and some CDMA and IP network options. Still pretty dismal, in other words.
Not a bad phone, though, especially for the price. It just seems creepy to try adb and be told "insufficient permissions..."

you sure? I have the $99 amazon ads version and ADB works fine. used it to disable the ads. I pay amazon enough money so I really do not feel bad about it...
Hmmm, now you mention it, that's how I killed the ads, also.
Hasn't been working lately, though.
I have updates turned off, I wonder what has changed?
Thanks for the info, I'll have to look into it.
And roger on the not feeling bad.

3rd Party Unlocking Safe?

I'm a little confused on how 3rd parties can offer unlock services for a fee, but we can't unlock the phones ourselves. What tools do they have that developers in these forums don't have access to? I've seen reference to "unlock code databases". Are these somehow stolen from the carriers, or hacked somehow? I'm seeing a variety of carrier locked phones for sale on eBay that I'd like to unlock for use on other networks (I travel frequently), but I've never used one of these services before and also don't want to pay to unlock the phone if I can avoid it. Just curious if there's a simple explanation how the 3rd parties can offer this service, but DIYers can't. Thanks!
Looks like this should have been in the Q&A section, sorry. Moderators feel free to move. Also, I did a quick Google search and seems like I answered my own question... Many of the services are outright scams, but some reverse engineer the algorithm to calculate the unlock codes from the IMEI, and some devices are unlocked with random numbers from a database, so unless you can hack the database or know someone on the inside, you can't 3rd party unlock... Any way to find out if the S10+ is an algorithm or random number? I'm hesitant to trust one of these 3rd parties, unless someone has a reputable service to recommend? Thanks!
