lc v20 t-mobile - LG V20 Questions & Answers

hello, I'm new on this forum, and not an expert on rooting and flashing...
I just bought a lg v20 brand T-Mobile, id like to know if I can put a different version without the T-Mobile bloatware, even not rooted, just a normal lg clean version of this phone! thx so much !

What version? v10k or earlier - yes, v10p or v10q - no.
-- Brian

If you want to root lg h918 you may just have to become an expert on rooting. It's dangerous risky business
Oh well, maybe I'm exaggerating, but to change rom you have to root this phone. No other choice.
Also you can only root it if your firmware is version 10K or below.
^runningnak3d beat me to it

I already menage to root the phone, it was a a h91810k, after the root is 10j, I'm not sure what is changing...

You're now in a perfect position to use any of the stock based roms.

You can flash the latest firmware if you want -- don't.
10k and below (10j is what you are on now) is ARB 0. If you flash 10p or 10q, you can only use 10p or 10q roms, and if something happens where you have to flash the KDZ, you would have to flash 10p or 10q and you would not be able to root again.

I don't really care about have my phone rooted, my main thing is to be able to have a clean and fast android experience( I used to have nexus) but T-Mobile bloatware is disgusting...otherwise I was thinking to install lineage os, but I'm not sure, I will be able to update android like a non root smartphone? or should I flash all the time a new version?

so no one knows if I can install an lg android stock on this phone without a carrier bloatware? I don't really care about lg app, just no carrier...

Root it, install twrp, then use titanium backup to remove all unwanted apps. Look online for debloat lists for the v20 or v10. Make a backup in twrp incase something goes wrong.

On tmo, I can either uninstall tmo apps or disable them. Other carriers I don't know. Look at each app's info (settings/apps) to see what options you have. Also, if the app is acting like a system app, use tibu to convert it to a user app. Then you can greenify it or delete it.

Towelroot

I did the towelroot on my S5 sprint phone. also, used the root checker, and said it was successful.
my question is, is this a true root? can i install roms? what is the best recovery to use?
Is there instructions out there, on how to get a recovery installed after doing towel root?
If i havent done the true, full root, how much further do i need to go, in order to start flashing roms?
Is there a true, Google Play edition rom out there for this phone?

It is a true root, but just remember you still have a locked bootloader, so you can not flash custom roms, recoveries or kernels that are not based off of TouchWiz (essentially limited to stuff built ontop of TouchWiz).
Once the bootloader is unlocked then you can do all of that.
GPE version of the phone is still a rumor, but they released the S4 GPE version around this time...
Thanks for that information.. since i dont have the bootloader unlocked, i really cant do anything.
Should i just go back to stock? is there an easy way to do this?
Or
Should i unlock the bootloader? is there step by step instructions on this? Sprint Galaxy S5

There was a developer for note 3 who wrote a script to install ROM without custom recovery. It might be the way if any developer can develop script for S5 as well...

Yes that is correct you can't really do anything in terms of custom roms. That being said you still are rooted, so you can install titanium backup and the xposed framework and modify your phone using those methods. You still are on stock, just with an rooted phone, are you talking about unrooting the phone? I've seen things that can let you do that (like this) but I don't think your phone is supported.
I wish I could say that unlocking the bootloader is something that is as easy as you may think it is. It is extremely difficult from my understanding. I don't know a lot about it so I can't give you a good answer to be honest, but I haven't seen anything on the subject.
Just so you know, that once VZW pushes an update to your phone, you will lose root (if you update) and won't be able to reroot until a new exploit is found (assuming the update closes the exploit that towelroot initially took advantage of). This news sucks but this is just a fact of life when dealing with VZW and ATT.

Not completely true, if you install superSU Pro from the play store root will stick after an update because of the survival mode.

Didn't realize that SuperSU Pro could maintain that even if they close the exploit in the kernel that allows them access root functionality. How is that possible?
all good info..
the reason i want to root, is in hopes of getting a true google phone. No Touchwiz.. i did install superSU. i understand that will keep my phone from getting viruses as easy.
however, my phone popped up an update icon, so i went to check if i could download the update. the message i got was..
"the operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. try downloading software updates using samsung kiel on your PC, or visit a customer service center."

Big Brother is watching you Walk slowly, go lie on the floor and spread your arms and legs. The NSA will be there any minute now
Don`t think that because Towelroot doesn`t trip KNOX (atm) root will not be identified by both the phones hard- and software.
btw.. using superSU app.. you can unroot with it. it worked, and phone is now unrooted.
** Sprint s5 **
Hello,
I came across your thread on the TowelRoot for the Sprint S5 and I was interested in doing this to my Sprint S5 also.
* I just wanted to confirm with you if there is anything I need to know before I do this? I was scared because I didn't see any threads or news to confirm that the V3 TowelRoot will work with our phone.
Please let me know, thank you

If your still on MM then you can root.

I use Package Disabler Pro to disable around 30 apps/services, it does it without root.

If you update to nougat then you will loose root. Use titanium backup to freeze the att update. If you do decide to update you can still downgrade using Odin to flash the APK1 firmware. (Or at least i was able to)

LG V20 T-Mobile Rooting - Soo many threads; I have no idea what I'm doing

I've done a bit of research, searched through threads on this forum, and I still have no idea what I'm doing. The last phone I rooted was a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket.
What's the simple-man's way of rooting the T-Mobile variant of the LG V20? I see the below threads:

First which firmware are you on now? 10i, 10j, 10k, what? I think 10k is not rootable. But... If you have older firmwares then you can root with dirtycow method. it is not that hard. I think the hardest part should be to try to flash the twrp (but even that was easy at least for me an average flasher and tester). If you have any issues, the system will usually restore to the original image as a last resort.

The 10j kdz version is to be flashed with LG UP if you needed it. but up to now it is better you dont move further from 10j, because 10k is not rootable (i believe I've seen). If you want to have 10k you can flash 10j and then flash via twrp a zip of the stock rom with 10k

Encryption is mostly used for companies as extra security . But if i dont misremember , it is necessary to do it. Best thing would be to follow the instructions provided on the original thread.
T-Mobile LG V2010t
Hey all I new at all this and I'm trying to unlock or root my T-Mobile LG V20. I've never done any of this stuff, but I want to be able to use this phone on a network other than T-Mobile. Can anyone give this rookie ( me) some help?
T-Mobile won't unlock it for me. The day there is a balance owed on it. And when I tried the unlock app. It say failure in processing the request. Please reboot and try again.. If you can walk me through this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Why did you reply to a post from last year for this?
Rooting has nothing to do with network unlocking the phone (and if it's on 10t or really anything past 10k it's unrootable anyway).
Your best option is to get T-MOBILE to unlock it, otherwise there are some other third party websites which may be able to unlock it for a fee.

Safe to flash H91010I to US99610N with LGUP?

Hi all,
Have an AT&T branded V20 in Australia so not getting updates. Also can't use the hotspot without it being registered on AT&T network.
Want to know if its safe to flash a KDZ, thinking US99610N as its from the unlocked variant?
Have a few questions:
Is it possible?
Anybody know of a good guide to do it?
Risk of hard/soft bricking?
Possibility for recovering after possible brick?
Any help is greatly appreciated, been trying to find answers on my own for ages to no avail.
Thanks!
Root your phone, then flash the latest H910 firmware. There are two zips that are in the ROMs forum -- one will take you back completely to stock, and the other will upgrade you, but leave TWRP, you can decide which one.
As for flashing the US996 firmware, it may work, probably won't brick your phone, but there is no reason to...

Would updating to a newer H910 firmware still leave me with the issue of the hotspot wanting an AT&T connection? That's the only reason I thought to flash to US996 as its unlocked so would think that's the only way to alleviate the mobile hotspot issue.
Thanks again for your reply!
Search for 'H910 root' in News and DIscussions. I made a thread specifically for the H910 up to V10r.
Have you ever installed the mobile hotspot app for the carrier that you use on any other phone? If so, go into the playstore and search for it -- you will be able to install it.
For example, I use T-Mobile with my H910, and after I debloated all the AT&T crapware, I just went into the playstore and installed all the T-Mobile apps that I need. If for some reason that isn't possible for you, you can always side load them. The bottom line is, that while it may work, you will probably have more trouble if you flash another models firmware. There are exceptions, but why do it if you don't have to

Thanks heaps for your replies. I'm not trying to be difficult (but probably kinda am), I guess also my reason for looking at the US996 route is I live in Australia and that model was sold here, the H910 wasn't. So if I flashed to that wouldn't I be getting OTA updates, not having to flash every time?
Also with the hotspot, this is just a little bit of a foreign concept to me. I've owned plenty of Android phones but this is my first non-Nexus. All the others I've bought from overseas and its been as simple as settings>network>hotspot & tethering and away you go. So with this one I have to download an app? Seems stupid for something that is such a basic feature and is built into Android. I'm not sure why they bother with all this crap, stock Android is better in every way IMO.
Again really appreciate your guidance.
Well, all I can say is try it. It isn't going to brick your phone so bad that you can't recover, but the recovery process would involve you flashing the H915 KDZ and rooting. In order to do that, you must be at ARB 0, so make sure that whatever US996 KDZ that you flash doesn't increment ARB. Also, let's say that you flash the US996 10c KDZ and it works fine, but down the road you take an OTA that increments ARB AND doesn't work. You would then have no way to fix your phone.
Just trying to point out some of the pitfalls you may run into.

No I appreciate the pitfalls being pointed out. I thought it was the safer way to go but guess not... I'll take a look at your thread you mentioned earlier when I have a bit of time to actually do it. Or I'll just wait until a big update comes out, 8.0 or something. Thanks for all your help.

What can be done with the H872? Lacking official LG bootloader unlock.

Getting ready to root my G6, LG-H872, I discover too late that LG only unlocks the bootloader on US997.USA and H870 european. ugh
What can be done with this phone?
I won't want a custom ROM or X-posed framework. I will want adaway and titanium backup and to move around root files.
I see a Lineage ROM saying it can go on the H872, but I don't see that confirmed. I see commercialized "one click" rooting saying they do H872, but I don't believe them.
Is there some alternative to normal root, where I can make this phone useful?

Ah yes, thanks. I have read thru that thread; I am sure it is legit. But wow, that is even more complicated than my recent struggle to root my Sony Z5c, that one was not worth the effort (love that little phone and high resolution camera tho).
That G6 procedure includes more than one episode of yanking out the usb cord at just the right millisecond, in the middle of a process; I am not that dexterous. And then the risk of mistake is maximum = irrecoverable brick.
I will keep an eye on that one. But for the amount of effort, it would be less costly to sell this phone, then buy another with the right model number.
