Replacement Dialer App? - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

I'm using a stock Moto G5 Plus that hasn't been rooted. I've heavily themed it and really like my device. The only nitpicky thing I can really obsess about is that the stock dialer gives about half the screen for a pic of the person that you're calling. However if, like me, you don't use pics in your phone contact list then it just shows a shadow of a generic figure. I'd really like to get rid of this, but it's the stock Moto dialer and I'm afraid of messing around with things. I don't want to root but if anyone has any suggestions or apks and how to use them then I'd be interested...

It's not the moto stock, it's google stock dealer since this moto G it's almost a nexus with a pristine nougat stock rom(motorola just ad moto gesture and a guide).
So, you have to change the rom. I tried the Asus ZenUI like dealer (since I had a zenfone and I liked that dealer) but it's not as good as the stock asus.
Don't bother and enjoy your light android almost stock UI, then when out of warranty install a custom rom. IMHO

Have you tried the Google's Dialer and Contacts app? If you haven't, give it a try. Just don't forget to set it as default if you wish to keep it.

No, we're not using the Google Phone (Dialer) and Contacts (it's pretty much the same as stock). Keep in mind the dialer isn't available in Play store for G5+

In the settings you can change the "font style." (New fonts can be downloaded for a buck.) It can have a significant effect on how things appear. Some suggestions from the tips thread are Helvetica Nue, Soho Gothic, Frutiger and Felbridge. I'm digging Helvetica a lot.
Thanx for suggestion.. I forgot to mention I downloaded a few flip fonts I love how it changes the look of the phone.. Any other suggestions? Or performance boosters?

you can not change the boot logo (or shutdown) if you are not rooted. If you are rooted, you still get OTA, but once installed it will unroot the phone
No problem do this
Fancy Widgets
Pure Messenger/ Grid Calendar and an Agenda app... (can't remember the name)
I am running Agenda Widget and liking it ok so far. I am always looking for a better one.
Launcher Pro or ADW, Beautiful Widgets, change the font style.
Here is a link to a thread with a plethora of Flip Fonts to choose from. Just download the .apk. locate and install on your device. Go into settings and change the font, restart and there you go

Don't mean to pick on the op but I'm curious why people don't want to root.
I did the day it was possible and haven't looked back. So many things you can do to customize all reversible if you have to. Just don't try doing really crazy stuff unless you know what your doing but most things in the stick under the root section are easy and awesome.
Anyway I'd love to understand why people don't just do it.
Battery usage with percentage would be really nice.

I don't get why people who don't root their phones go on XDA. XDA is a place for rooting and ROM development. Not a user-friendly website for non-rooters. But yeah definitely root, you can customize a lot more. Customize the notifications bar, I don't really big the light gray and blue 3G icon
I've gone from a few different Nokias, to a Motorola Razor, to a Blackberry Pearl and now finally to a Samsung Vibrant. I'm pretty good with computers and software so I know I could get rooting/recovery/flashing down, but this is my first time with a mobile device I could hack.
Whenever I do research on the topic I find multiple threads with multiple ways to root. The whole directions/concept just isn't crystal clear with me yet, despite how much I've read. And, there's always posts at the end of each thread by users with unanswered issues/problems.
I guess, I'm just taking the slow cautious route, enjoying stock android eclair for a while. I do have the itch, but no apps or issues with my phone have pushed me beyond curiosity and into the experimental, so to speak.
What is the top main reason you have for rooting your vibrant?
Edit: to point out, I know I could've "hacked" my previous phones, but not the way you can with an Android phone, you know what I mean...

- Allows access to applications that require root access (e.g. Titanium Backup, SetCPU, AdFree (not suggested since it helps developers), metamorph, etc)
- When you root, you have the ability to flash a custom recovery that allows custom ROMs. This allows nandroid backups, restores, and more.
- Remove bloatware that comes with the phone (this one DEFINITELY)
- Screenshots
See, I get confused. All I've read about recovery was people talking about "booting into recovery. The only thing I thought you flashed were the custom ROMs. And, I thought you only needed the backups and restores so you could get back to an unrooted state in case you needed warrantee work, or messed up your phone somehow.
What are the major bloatware items on the stock t-mobile vibrant?

... oh yeah and with root (and installed clockwork recovery) you can apply the Captivate camera which its interface is easier to apply different scenes.
And no.. you can restore non-root with Odin and nandroid backup (JAC's thread has a unrooted backup online). But yeah you do backups before you apply hacks to your phone incase anything happens

Trying to figure out how to remove bloatware was THE reason I found xda and rooted. I had no idea what I was doing but it is ULTRA easy. Download update zip-boot to recovery-apply-enjoy. That got me discovering all the other awesome things I can do.
You will always see people who have problems with anything in the threads. This is why you make backups. Once you have those you can do a lot more with a lot more confidence knowing that if you make a mistake you can correct it - mostly. And you can unroot if you have to.

Agreed. Love having it.
Come on guys lets talk about stuff you can do for non rooters please. I did root my phone but I took it to far and bricked it. I'm not doing it again and I know that xda forums lean more to rooting then not. I thought a thread that talked about non rooted phones was a great idea but its been taken over. So I'm bringing it back.
There are a lot of good lockscreen apps to look at for changing your lockscreen. I've used some of them just haven settled on one yet. So no need to root just have fun with it the way it is.

[Q] Should I get an Atrix?

Couple of questions for Atrix owners running the latest update. Can I get your feedback on these?
- How is flash performance on the Atrix? Is it smooth or is it choppy?
- How hard is it to enable 3rd party installs (don't care about full root or anything else) just being able to install apps outside Market
- Is the screen really that bad? Saw it in a store and it looks great to me.
- Does the phone every spontaneously reboot or is unstable? I need something that'll be super stable
- I can always replace Blur launcher with LPP or ADWEX but are there other customizations Moto has that are extremely annoying? Anyway to get around them without new ROM?
- How are you overall satisfied with the phone?
- How is signal strength? Lot of dropped calls or none?
I'm looking more for people who haven't rooted and/or just did the 3rd party install hack. I know rooted folks will probably be installing a new ROM but I'm looking for stock experience. I have CM7 running on an Inc and honestly, it's great but there's not a huge difference between Froyo and Gingerbread in most day to day tasks.
I wrote something but it will not let me delete so ill do nonsense sorry

1. I don't use too much flash, but it seems pretty smooth to me on the sites I have used.
2. You have to root to enable non-market apps. You can always sideload with ADB, but that's different. Rooting was easy.
3. The screen is great for text and graphics, but looks meh to me for videos. My wife's iPhone 4 has a prettier-looking screen, but it's smaller.
4. I had one reboot once. That's in 10 days of ownership. I was using Maps or Navigation or something.
5. MotoBLUR can be annoying, but you can mostly get around it. There is an issue with getting email notifications when using Corporate Sync with Exchange Server 2003. Other than that it's not too intrusive. The accounts set-up is done through BLUR, too.
6. I am mostly satisfied with the phone, but I miss flashing roms and would love to get AOSP on this. MotoBLUR isn't my favorite. Battery life isn't stellar, but it gets me through a day with moderate use.
7. Never had a dropped call. I had to laugh when I still had full bars and my wifes iPhone said "no signal" the other day while driving.

3rd party app enabling is super easy with fool Proff rooting technique. I've had one spontaneous reboot and that was after rooting.... not an issue got phone on release date.changing launcher is easy and no motobblur doesn't have extra crap to slow Yu. My call quality is amazing and I have had 0 drops (Buffalo NY) and the screen is crisp crsip crisp. I love the screen dunno why ppl hate it compares to my iPhone 4

Even with the latest software, there's no issue rooting and enabling 3rd party install?
Is there a simple instruction thread out there? The only one I saw was rather large and old.

You have to downgrade to the original shipping firmware to root initially, and the script preps the device for the update. Then you do the update. Then you run another script. Then you're on the latest and you have root. Done and done.

Yup, very easy. Just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter. I also installed Gingerblur, and my phone is so much better now!
I just rooted last night and did the upgrade. It was really easy so I'd consider doing it as soon as possible. Consider that if you do the OTA 1.5.7 update without root you won't have any backup utilities to save your data if you want to get root, and thus have to downgrade.

From what I've read on the Moto forums it is limited to Exchange 2003. I have no way to test whether that is true because all I have access to is 2003.
I get notifications sometimes, but it's spotty.

About to get an atrix, Any suggestions?

i'm probably going to get an atrix tomorrow and wondering what the first thing i should do as soon as i open the box. i'm not a 100% android noob. i have rooted and flashed my galaxy tab and I9000m and understand the basics. but i have a few questions like
- Can i Disable Moto Blur or should i?
- is rooting the same as most other devices, debugging mode/super one click etc?
- safe apps to freeze with titanium backup(list or link)
- is 2.3 coming or is it already out?
- is it worth it or should i wait?
- other personal problems or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
- not too important but how are the stock headphones? is there a remote similar to HTC and Iphone or no?
- and call quality through them if known would be nice too.
- and can i use any 3.5mm headphone or is it specific to moto?
Thankyou

I can answer some of these but not all as I'm sort of a n00b.
Is rooting the same? Yes, pretty much.
2.3 out? It's not out yet, but in a few weeks.
Is it worth it? Well I am an ex iPhone 4 user, and it's pretty worth it! I am going to be honest though, without having a case, its a you know what to not get scratches even when taking good care of it. Also the build feels cheap if your coming from a more solid phone. this phone is ALL plastic, but its the stuff inside that counts. Also just miss my iPhone 4, lol. it's all i was used to for 3 years.
Personal problems, some apps like facebook dont check in properly, more than 70 percent of the time it doesn't work. GPS is among the best i've seen however, locking on almost instantly. umm camera quality sucks, but the phone is pretty consistent with flash and plays pretty awesome . fast fast fast phone. it has its quirks though, however if your an android user and know what its about, it's probably the phone for you!
Rooting requires downgrading firmware then upgrading to maintain root, iirc.
GB will be released soon no eta though.
Bootloader bypass is being worked on as we speak, 2nd init is working but needs roms.
Right now is the time to get this phone, with the devs working on so many solutions to Moto and Att's lockdown the potential of this phone is incredible.
Also with Netflix coming soon and the qhd display it will get even better, however the yellows on this display seem a little greenish, and has miffed a few people, but I really don't pay much attention to it.
The only problems I have seen is random reboots, all from apps not optimized for this phone.
As far as camera quality, IMO it is the best camera quality I have seen on a phone and that include the iphone4, video is great, the only thing it lacks is stock camera customizing i.e. lens effects, more color options ect., easily rectified with apps.
This is the best phone I have ever owned and would recommend it to anyone looking for something for in a phone.

1. Yes you can, prob comes down to personal preference.
2. No. I am very happy with the GladRoot method. Do this BEFORE you accept the OTAs.
3. I dont know of a link or have a list sorry.
4. Its coming. Dont listen to everybody anybody in the forum who thinks a few peoples speculations are fact. The fact is Moto has NOT given a date for GB on the Atrix.
5. Its worth it!! Join the party.

Unfortunately u cant bcoz its more than a skin.. its entrenched within the OS. However freezing apps like Social Networking which are from Motoblur and installing a Lanucher gets rid of most of the problem. You can definitely root. Gingerbreak works flawlessly.

-You can disable motoblur by installing a pseudo-rom (i suggest gingerblur) or by using third party launcher (i.e. launcher pro) and freezing motoblur through titanium backup.
-Rooting actually is kinda the same(ish). You don't have to root before you ota. You can ota to 1.83 and use gingerbreak to root it. Use this link to install gingerbreak on you phone, http://atrix4ghacks.com/atrix-4g-hacks/how-to-root-atrix-4g/ then run gingerbreak from phone to one click root.
-Gingerbread is coming out in like a few weeks. You can check out the gb preview thread in android dev.
-its worth it
-um it doesn't come with stock headphones, but they sound just as good as iphone with any headphoens.
-call quality is good
one issue it has is that it kinda gets warm (or hot if using for a long time), especially around the bottom portion. oddly it doesn't get nearly as hot on the lower back of the phone as it does at the lower front glass of the phone.
hope i helped
I wouldn't do anything other than root and enable sideloading. Be sure to get the Amazon marketplace for the one free app a day. Most are garbage, but some (like the Nuance FlexT9 keyboard are great. I think Motoblur is fine, despite what many say. Decide for yourself if it really doesn't fit with how you use it. I just chose not to add my facebook account. It works fine in my experience.

How to remove TouchWiz (sort of)

Tim Hutt (from this forum) has done a great job of packaging the standard ICS launcher, sms app and calendar and sticking them on the market. You can get them here: (original thread)
Launcher, Calendar, Messaging
I've also removed that horrible chatON. Go to settings and click on Application Manager, click on the All tab, then find and click on chatON. Click on Force Stop and Disable. This will stop it appearing on the lock screen. The same thing can be applied to all Samsung bloatware, such as backup, account, software updates, etc.
This solution has turned out to work really well for me as I actually some of the new features on the phone, such as the motion bits, and the water unlock.
The dialer is the only thing that gets on my nerves still so if anyone has any way to get the original, do tell.
And if you also get annoyed by the icons and want the original ICS ones, get the ICS icons from here, and get QuickShortcutMaker.
You can now make shortcuts to the camera, dialer etc but use the original icons. It's anal I know, but I like what I like
Root your phone and use titanium back up then delete what you want

Phone dialer does not internet search for POI when typing a business name

With my HTC One M7 GE, I could type a business name into the phone dialer. And it would pull listings of matching business names, like doing a phone search through Google Maps. But with the MXPE, I type a business name and nothing happens. It only searches my personal contacts.
Anyone know why and how I can make the dialer do internet search?

maybe this will do it. Looks like they stripped it down http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/themes-apps/zip-google-dialer-2-1-cid-google-t3210955
Yeah, they took out the business search and Caller ID feature out of the Dialer for this phone. Sucks cause I actually used them. Gonna see if I can get it working with the above post.
Edit: I'm not yet rooted, so I won't be able to install that zip file, but it looks like it's the proper Nexus (or GPE) version of the Dialer.
Works if you root and flash that zip.

I certainly hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. It's beyond 14 days to return for me and I got a custom boot screen, which would make it harder to sell. Although it's just my name, it still would not make so much in a sale, given it's used and has a custom boot message.
I'll keep rolling with the MXPE, but this just stincks. Oh well, the ups and downs of early adoption . It's still a great device in a lot of ways.
But the dialer, was not only an easy way to lookup numbers. It also allowed an easy way to save search results to my personal contacts.
Now, given this one. If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably have waited for the 6P. Got a skin for it, and acted like the ugly duckling was pretty .
And maybe Google will offer the enhanced dialer as a seperate app.

lol, well you could always root we should have a back to stock method eventually and the voided warranty only applies to software and not hardware.

Nah, I've done plenty of rooting and hack modding over the years. I'm happier now just living with stock.

Unlock, flash twrp, flash google dialer. Stay unrooted while enjoying stock with google dialer just like you wanted. Magical.
Take it a step further, flash stock recovery.
Over on the Moto Forums, they say it's Google that holds the cool dialer for their phones. So it's not Moto's fault. It's Google holding it as a selling point and not offering it for the masses.
So I've found the Truedialer app. It works much like the Google Dialer and has some other additional features. Good to go now .
