When the screen is on the pings are about 4-8ms
When the screen is showing the lock screen pings stay 4-8ms
As soon as the screen goes dark the pings alternate between 8 and 137ms with many failed packet returns
(Always On makes no difference, the pings drop as soon as that display kicks in, no lock makes no difference, as soon as the screen goes dark the Wifi is instantly put into low power mode)
If I keep my screen on then its perfect for 10mins or Indefinitely with the app I'm now using to prevent the screen timeout, from what I see there is no way to stop the device blanking the screen 3secs after it's locked and cutting the Wifi power dramatically
(constantly having a charger attached works via the dev options too but that gives you the heaviest Wifi Hotspot on Earth never mind the open touchscreen issue)
I have power saving off, max performance etc etc and cannot stop this.
As it stands my G950F is a terrible Wifi Hotspot as the screen must stay on therefore you cannot put it anywhere that might bump the active touchscreen
Any thoughts or solutions?
current work-around:
i can lock the screen on, turn the brightness down and leave it on a blank firefox tab
some paper taped over the screen or maybe a pouch to disable the touch screen
which deserves an OT comment on the current state of these mini computers.
why do manufactures develop all this quick good tech and then disable the proper functions in place of sh*te like "CNN Edge" and all the bloat and spyware just assuming everyone wants to plug their brain into Twitter 24/7 and send their every move back to some unknown logging servers?
Even the way you have to go into every single app to change the privacy, sleep and auto-call home is really annoying, eg. anyone have an app to disable them all in 1 go from firing up wifi?
Even Windows XP had a firewall you could configure, how is this any different to a PC???
Android still s*x, anyone got a proper OS like a debian flavour working yet?

Ok, so I am using my transformer at my desk to show my todo list, etc. I have a little holder for it and its plugged into ac power. Id like to basically have the screen on all the time, but when im not actively doing anything with it, it dims to the lowest setting possible (blacking out would be preferred), but i want to be able to wake it up by simply tapping the screen once or twice.
I know there is an app called tap tap that uses the proximity sensor, but i couldnt get it to work and it think it might be because its pretty dark in my office at night (I only have the monitors on), so maybe its not enough light for that to work. Plus id rather not have to wave my hand just right to get it to work. Tapping the screen would be much easier, but i understand if it turns the screen completely off, its not going to work.
Suggestions?
what about the microphone? try yelling at it maybe it will wake up
Why not simply have the screen on all the time ? Its in setting screen time out and change it to never ?

Why are people responding with questions that dont have to do with my question? Obviously I know how to keep the screen on all the time at regular brightness, but thats not what i asked how to do. And chatch15117 was just plain trolling.
Maybe "Tasker"? This app can do almost anything.

I'm not sure if I'm describing this correctly in the title so let me try and elaborate -
I've used probably 10-15 different ROMs for my Nexus 10 and lately every single one I try, I have the same issue when I have the screen titled down horizontally towards me while reading in bed ( think holding it up while lying on my back, angled down at me so I can read ), where the screen blacks out/goes to sleep.
Then I have to tilt it back so it's vertical again and sometimes it puts me at the lock screen but more often I have to hit the power button to get the lock screen back, infuriatingly I then sometimes get stuck in a loop of hitting power to get to lock screen as it's going back to lock screen so then it kills the display again so then I have to hit power again etc etc. Once the screen is back and displaying everything is fine until some random amount of time ( between 5 seconds & 5 minutes ) when the screen just goes black again - presumably when I move/adjust my position or the angle of the screen.
Anyway - I believe this is version independent, I don't think it's the ROMs, it's like it's something built-in to the OS.
The only thing I can figure is it's either related to the accelerometer detecting that I'm tilting the tablet horizontally so the screen is facing down and thus it is killing the display, OR it's the light sensor detecting a darkening of the light since I would be angling the screen away from a direct light source and so it kills the screen thinking I'm placing it face down on a table.
Possibly related - I've also noticed since 4.2.2 ( maybe coincidence ) that I can't rotate my screen 180 degrees and be able to unlock the device. No matter what, if I flip that sucker around it instantly kills the display and locks the screen. I've got auto-rotate on, so I know that's not the issue, and if I hit the power button to get the lock screen up, then unlock it INSTANTLY locks again and kills the screen. It's like there's a setting now that says I CAN rotate if I want to but there's no point because I can't actually unlock the screen to do anything. Keep in mind this ONLY happens when flipping it 180 - if it do it 90 or 270 and have it vertical there is no issue, it is literally only when it is flipped 180 that this occurs.
Am I over thinking this or is there something really, really obvious I'm missing? I've gone over every setting I can think of and the only thing remotely screen related is the sleep timer but it doesn't matter how long I make it or if I even turn it off entirely - every time I get into bed to read I have to mash the power button to get the screen going again. It's minor in the grand scheme of things but it is incredibly frustrating when all I want to do is read before going to sleep, just stay open damn it !
I hate to shameless bump this but does anyone know what I'm talking about? If I tilt my N10 past a certain degree ( I want to say it's around 30 degrees or so ) the screen just goes to sleep, how do I stop this? I've used a ton of different ROMs so it seems to be something consistent and/or a fundamental "feature" of JellyBean and/or Android in general.

If nothing else, I would say it rather "seems" to be a hardware issue, because I've never seen this behavior on my own device. That said, I can't say I've heard of many people talking about this either.

Thanks for replying! Good point - I've just assumed it wasn't something specific to MY N10 because I can't imagine why it would happen from a hardware perspective since it's never been damaged ( dropped, scuffed ) in any way. Unless I just got a bad egg with a faulty accelerometer or light sensor or something, which is also possible.
I suppose if no one else is experiencing this and it's isolated to me and is ROM independent than it must be hardware. Either that or when I'm laying in bed I generate large bursts of electromagnetic activity that cause it to think I've closed the "smart" cover. :cyclops:
Screen Timeout
I don't know if any of this matters, but I am just curious.
What is your Screen Timeout setting? Have you tried increasing this? Do you have it set to lock screen upon pressing the power button? Have you tried changing it? Do you use a pattern lock, pin code, other?

My screen timeout is set to 10 minutes, though it doesn't seem to matter what I set it to - I just set it to 30 and the same thing happens after a second of tilting it.
I have screen lock via slide, but while I do lock/kill the screen via pressing the power button I just realized I've never actually set it to do this. I guess I thought it was a built-in feature - I've just gone through all the settings I have ( currently using FlamingMonkey AOSP ROM for reference ) and I don't see any option anywhere to enable/disable this feature. :S
Maybe there is an issue with my power button and when I tilt the tablet it jiggles it enough that it "presses" down and locks?
Use ultimate rotation control from store and force the lockscreen to landscape at all times.

I think that you are on the right track. The option to lock the screen on hitting the power button is under the Security settings for stock android. It should be there for your ROM too.
I constantly hit my power button when sitting it down or picking it up. That is why I disable the instant lock option.
Something that's been bugging me with my active display is where I have my phone mounted in my car to the right of my steering wheel. It's constantly popping up the time / active display when I move at all. I'm sure this is speeding up battery drain. It also happens a lot when I'm at my desktop at home and at work since I keep the phone nearby, upright in my keyboard's built-in dock or laying flat on the desk between my arms.
While I LOVE the idea, it would be nice to incorporate the option to have it activate via single tap instead of waving over or looking at the device. It comes up a lot when I'm not looking at it and not really waving over it. Any movement near it seems to bring that screen up and since it's not AMOLED, it is lighting every single pixel enough to worry me on drain. I've looked at displaying active display, but then I lose the entire convenience of not having to press the physical power button.
My LG G4 had a double-tap, but I think I would enjoy a single tap or something. Does anyone know of my options to disable the wave or looking at the phone waking but still have convenience? I swear I read there's an option to have it activate on movement of the phone, but not the waving detection... but can't seem to put that together myself.
I feel like a bit of a dunce... I disabled Approach for Moto Display, but left Wake screen when notifications arrive set to On Moto Display and moving the phone works. If I set that to Ambient Display or Off, then moving the phone does nothing at all. It's a temporary solution to my annoying issue, but still no response to a tap on the screen which would be the best option for those needing to disable Approach for Moto Display for whatever their reason.
One thing to make sure you're doing is that you are acknowledging notifications as they come in. You can swipe them tot he left or right to dismiss, but if you do nothing with a notification it will keep lighting the screen up every minute or so until you do.
I did not know this initially and was concerned over how much the phone lit up, after finding this out and acknowledging the notifications as they come in it's gotten a lot better.
Hi guys,
Is there really no way to turn off the phone screen when using smart view? I've been searching and there doesn't seem to be any threads in regards to the issue, so hopefully I'm just being stupid.
Surely such an obvious feature can't be missing?
Thanks
JamesPBK - Galaxy S8 Duos (64GB)
you need to install smart view app and configure in settings
With the latest android update, while connected to my tv with smart view (Note 8), my phone screen turns off after a few seconds. How can I set this so that it stays on? (I use it for exercise and sometimes want it on tv and sometimes on my phone. I don't want my phone screen to turn off.)
I've a note8 and I want my screen to be off.. somehow even after the update, my screen is still on. Can anyone point me to the right direction on where is the setting for this? Thanks

That is exactly what I also need - Connected with Smart View my Tab S3 Screen should stay ON - can't figure out how to do that. Is there a way?
Screen locks ...goes dim
Launch the app you want to screen cast then swipe down or up on ur screen...the app you are having trouble with is associated with a game booster .
Click on advanced settings of game booster/ launcher and disable "auto screen lock"
Hi, was wondering if anyone had further answers on this. Particularly the screen going off after few minutes whilst using smart view?. I have tab s3 and it does this whilst using zwift, it does not appear to be linked to a game booster or launcher (or j can't find that setting).
The screen doest lock i just need to swipe it to revive it, but i wish it could stay on so i can use both screens ?
Thanks all
Solved
Its seems there is nothing you can do when smart screen is activated. Even the 'screen always on' apps that are out there are ignored while smart screen is active. Also the alwzys on in developer options is ignored.
However i found a solution with an app called Macrodroid. Create a macro to be trigged when smart screen is running , adding always on screen as the action and its working fine :good::good:
I think this would also work in reverse for those of you who are having problem wiyh screen not dimming or going standby

This did not work for me. The Macrodroid isn't even recognizing Smart View being opened.
Hello all!
My Razer Phone 2 stopped charging. This is how my Razer Phone 1 also died, basically the charging port went bad, then worse, then died completely.
Anyway I got the Nothing instead, since price and specs fit me pretty fine.
However I want to change a few things. I might be blind in the settings menu, but I'm hoping you'll still help me!
I got a few points I'd like changed, and no amount of googling helped me here:
1. The phone turns on the screen when I pick it up. But there are often mistakes, and the screen just turns on by itself when I'm walking with it in my hand, or in my pocket. It has happened already a few times, after having for phone for 48 hours, that I have dismissed some notifications because of this. Can I stop this function all together?
2. I can also press the screen once and the screen will turn on. This is also a problem when the phone is in my pocket. On my Razer I had to double tap and it still turned on sometimes in my pocket. I ran the Razer phone with Nova Launcher, maybe I have to change to this launcher from the Nothing one to get this double tap feature?
3. I can turn off the screen by double tapping on the home screen. That is a feature I always use and appreciate. I never put the phone screen down so the lights on the backside won't get used. I always double tap to turn on the screen, check for notifications, and double tap to turn the screen off should there be no notifications. Nothing phone won't turn off the screen with a double tap unless I actually unlock it, so I can't do a quick check for notifications by double tapping and double tapping again. It won't matter if the phone is on a table, but I frequently check notifications and put the phone back to my pocket, and having to go for the screen button is not exactly for me. Do I need Nova Launcher here?
4. I NEVER use sounds on my phone, except for the alarms. When someone calls me while the screen is turned off, the screen turns off and I get vibration. If the screen is on I won't get any vibration from it, only a visual notification which is easy to overlook if I let it sit with the screen on but locked if I just checked notifications. Also I like the feedback in my hands in case I am doing something on the phone. I already missed some calls because of this. Can it be changed?
5. Is it possible to manipulate the glyph on the backside? I found a "secret" setting which makes them light up to the music playing, but that became pretty annoying just after 5 seconds. Are there some basic things you can do with the light? Like making a custom event and then specify how the light should react? Could be something simple like when a call is active the lights come on very dim? Maybe a 3rd party app someone did?
6. The Razer Phone 2 (and 1) has HUGE speakers in the top and bottom, so I have been living with pretty big bezels. The Nothing has the same size but the phone is almost 100% screen. If I need to go to the bottom and press a back button or something, I cannot reach anymore like on the Razer. Is there a way to add some virtual bezels on Android?
7. I really hate this "notch" or "camera bump". It is a bit of the same as number 6, but can I remove it completely, so the top of the screen where the camera is won't be used at all? The whole line, effectively adding more bezel here too.
I am probably picky, but I have used my phone in a specific way for my whole life, and I am not really good with changes. Also I think a phone should adapt to my needs, and I shouldn't adapt to it.
Thanks for reading and hopefully helping
To be honest, sounds like the Nothing Phone isn't the right device for you.
I like to know the answer to question 1 too.

1. There is an option to turn this feature off under Display->Lock Screen called Lift to show lock screen.
2. Don't know, but you should try using the Nova Launcher.
3. Don't know, but you should try using the Nova Launcher.
4. Very niche use case, you can try to search some root methods.
5. There is root app which can control the light you can try that.
6. and 7. There should be some root apps or magisk modules which allows to do that.
To 2: (I dont know if this works on NothingOS since im on Paranoid Android. But both are very near to stock, maybe it works for you or for others.) I disabled that tap to activate setting and am using fingerprint while screen is off. This can also act as a quick look for notifications, for that i tap where the fingerprint reader is really short so it fails to unlock. This way only the always on display shows up for 3-4 seconds.
Nova wont change anything lockscreen related.
To 5: If you have root, time and like playing around with commands and apps, you can try tasker. Since im on Paranoid Android and the glyphs arent really implemented yet, i made a task that fits my needs perfect.
To your other problems: i think too, the phone should adapt to the user. So i suggest you to wait, i guess there will come roms that are way more customizable.
And maybe a pixel would fit your needings better than this phone because there is a big custom rom scene around.
