Only at xda, surprisingly.
Everyday I'll be browsing the forum and randomly chrome will go from xda to some new page with a pop up message saying some crap like "congratulations! You won a free iPhone!" Or something similar.
It's happened so much that when I open a new page in chrome, the title for XDA is actually "win an iPhone"...
I have adaway and I've never really had ads at xda until recently. Maybe a couple weeks now...
Anyone else having this issue?

Try updating adaway hosts lists
I've read turning off data saver helps too.
Adaway says there aren't any updates.
Data saver is off. I've never had it on.
I guess I'm the only one with this problem.
I can hardly browse this site on my phone as it freezes, I assume waiting for ads to load!

For some time now, when I'm viewing the Facebook Touch site in the stock browser, at the bottom of the page is the line
"Download Facebook for your Ruth"
I think it started when I first flashed CyanogenMod, but I can't confirm that.
Googling 'android ruth' turns up rumors of a device named Ruth from Motorola, but I've never seen one, personally.
So, anybody know why Facebook is confused about what device I'm using?
I mean, my user agent specifically says 'Nexus One'
My stock N1 does the same thing! I've never rooted it or flashed another rom or anything, and it still thinks my N1 is a Ruth.

Facebook thinks mine is a Hero. Then again I only noticed that initially, not sure what it says now.
Mine says "Download Facebook for your Nexus One"
Running EPF21B - insecure, but otherwise stock.
So while we are on this topic, whats the best facebook app out there?

back on topic. mine says ruth, too. always wondered what that was about...
Anybody else have an opinion on the best facebook app? I hear stock is pretty good but I'm just curious to what you guys think. I'm guessing there is as many facebook apps as there are twitter apps, so thats why i'm so curious. Peace

Haven't come across one. there was a decent one out before we've got an official Facebook app, but I haven't seen any updates in awhile. stock one is okay, I use it just to read status updates and update my contacts. I use the touch site to see new notifications and browse through pictures, its way faster at loading pics than stock and notifications are easier to access. Facebook app takes you to Facebook mobile site when you click on any notification, pretty gay. while it is getting better, not as cool as iPhone Facebook app lol.

Oh ok, thanks man. =)
OK, I did search for this before I posted so I hope I don't get anybody mad for starting a new thread if this has been covered.
Regarding security threats and android phones. I did see the thread about a malware program out of Russia affecting android phones (installed via a movie program?). But in general, security issues do not seem to be a big issue.
The other threads I've found seem to have conflicting opinions.
So my question(s) is, how much do you all worry about security issues? Does anybody use Lookout (free mobile security app)? I did see that it has high ratings on the market, but I put more stock in what this community has for opinions than the market users.
Again, if this has been covered to death and I missed it, I apologize.
I do have concerns over security and therefore really don't install many apps. Since I have had an android phone, my gmail account has been compromised once, allowing spam to be sent from my gmail account and also spam to be placed on my Blogger site. While I cannot be certain it was something on my phone that allowed this, I rarely use my computer to access any of my Google apps. I also had never had issues with any email or other accounts being compromised for as long as I've had a computer. I also rarely get spam. So while I can't be certain, the fact it showed my account being logged into by a mobile device in Malaysia makes me very suspicious.

Thanks for the reply. I take it you haven't used Lookout or any of the other security apps?
Lookout looks legit, but I am a little skeptical. Guess I'll wait and see if I get any other responses before I do anything with it.
I haven't tried it in the past, as I'm skeptical too. I went ahead and installed it though after my post just to see. It is now being installed by some of the carriers by default apparently and I guess has won some awards, so hopefully it's been poked at a bit by people to where it itself isn't a large threat. Figure if it doesn't impact performance a lot there can't be any harm in trying it. Now, as for how effective it really is, I'd imagine that's something many people will never know.

Again, thanks for your input.
Performance impact is basically what I was worried about. I actually installed it the other day but when I realized it was on ALL the time, I uninstalled it before really giving it a chance.
I guess it's worth a shot. I'll install it again tonight and run a couple before and after quadrant benchmarks to see how much of an impact.
If I don't get anybody else posting here, I'll still post my experience in a couple/few days, so if you're interested, check back later in the week.
Thanks dpeeps, have a good one.

Not paranoid .... just cautious.
There is so much good information on this site that when I search for something that sounds too good (for free), and I can't find anything, yes, I'm going to "err on the side of caution".
ngholson, thanks for the input.

you are welcome. i use it mostly for the lost feature. if i lose it i can activate the gps and locate it that way, and i can also make it scream (caution this is really loud, and the only way to stop it is a battery pull) if it is somewhere close to me. it is very effective.
EDIT: they changed the scream feature, now it will scream for 1 minute and you can stop it by turning the volume down on the phone.
I checked the market a few times yesterday (Designed for tablets section). Then I checked it at night. Same stuff. An hour later, 4 new apps popped up. Now I can't help but check really often.. probably like 10 times today already. I just can't wait to see what new and interesting good looking app pops up.

Same here and put the market widget on my home screen
Lol I'm so excited I couldn't even spell market right in the thread title..
Yeah, have to admit I've done the same. I'm just waiting for those flood gates to open up.
Slightly off topic but on the new market does anyone see where you can rate and reviews your apps? I'm not seeing the ability anywhere. But yes i am equally addicted to refreshing my market for new tablet apps lol..

There would have been a bunch more tablet apps, but Google released the Honeycomb SDK.. what yesterday or today?
Some devs got it early, like CNN, AngryBirds, etc... but the mainstream devs weren't so lucky.
So, we got ourselves a bit of lag effect going on.
Just need to have them dig though the new SDK and kick out some useful apps.
Please no Sexy Asian picture apps in Tablet form... at least not yet!
Ok, is it just me? even with pop ups blocked, in browser, starting tonight I get an annoying best buy ad at the bottom of every screen. Close it out, and it appears every time I go to a new page... who can I pay to get this Crap off.

I'm talking about desktop... thought tapatalk was the app for the phone?
it's not just you it's REALLY PISSING ME OFF TOO!
Also really annoying here. I am on a laptop so screen space is precious, I used to click on ads on occasion but with these new annoying ones I will no longer click any ads until they are gone.
Yeah I never block ads but this site made me install adfree for Chrome tonight. So annoying!
I've been avoiding the site all day because of it. I may never go to best buy again.

They disabled it, see the bottom the page below.

Whew glad that's fixed!
Ads don't usually bother me but yes, that stupid best buy ad was driving me nuts. Glad they removed it.

Everytime I click a link, it would time out. Is it the slow network (due to billions of members) this forum is on? It really is getting frustrating.

Im not sure about that since only xda seems to be giving me this problem. it's like on back on 28k modem.. actually even worse since the page won't load at all. and Im not posting this on first sight of this issue. i've had this problem ongoing for the whole week. it's just xda for some reason.
thanks for the help tho!
most times i click a link in this forum, be it posts or post or whatever, this is what i get (and yes I got it while typing the above post as wel)
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/9168318/20121027_163228.jpg
I'm really sorry, I might be being dumb but what is the photo showing? - am I missing an error message? (presume you added the "help me pease" bit)
Have you tried accessing from another device on the same network and on a different network? (Presume you have, based on the other stuff on your desktop I assume u are very tech savvy lol)
I don't know why this would happen unless servers that you use are different from mine - my local network AND broadband are terrible but the site still flies (I access with Tapatalk on an (said quietly) ipad 2). I do occasionally get pages come up that say the are completely empty but a quick refresh and they return - presume that that is because of site updates/refreshes
Someone else may be able to help more, will be interested to hear the solution - good luck
thanks for the reply,
the image above is what i see when i click a link on xda... the pages won't fully load. i know it's justs XDA because non of the other sites show this. sites such as engadget, anandtech, phandroid, google news, etc, they all work fine, this is frustrating because even when I try to reply to someone, it will hang on me.
Yes i faced the same thing today
