What's the best rom? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know this is probably asked a lot, but what's the best rom for our amazing note 4? I have the T-Mobile version but unlocked. And I've tried a few roms but they all seem to lag or just slow down over time. I've never really tried stock cause I love the s8 apps and icons and what not. But I need something stable, fast and great battery. So what's the best?

You won't find Great festures of s8, fast, stable and good battery life everything in one ROM.
I think we have options to go with stock and disable/freeze everything we can or go with eRobot or any other rom and stop complaining about the battery life

I'm not trying to complain, I'm a manager at a cricket wireless store and I'm always on my phone. I just would like a little more battery out of this amazing phone. I appreciate all the devs. Just really asking people's opinion and testing them out

Norma rom v24/v25. Most stable for me. SM-N910F

ROM Reviews and Discussion

Hi guys,
Still on stock ROM, but looking to flash a new one really soon - looked through both Original and Development threads and haven't been very confident so far. Why?
The most popular ones seem to be Lightening and VillainROM, but I haven't found any comprehensive reviews of their battery life and performance - VillainROM doesn't have screenshots either. Mostly the posts on their threads are questions or debugging or pointing out bugs, so its hard to get a proper gauge.
So what are your thoughts on the ROMs so far? Looking for the usual - good battery, stability, performance. I don't care much for the blue of Lightening but as long as it works, it works. What makes it different from Villain?
Also appreciate any other ROMs that may be good to install!
Thanks!
One of the best and smoothest ROMs I've tried has been CyanogenMod 7. Its stable (even in the 7.1 RC), fast, good battery life and reliable. Check it out, its a definite favorite in my book
Sent from my Droid 1 CM7.1.0 RC1
So far I've only tested VillainROM. I'm waiting for a more stable CM7 to try it out, but until then VR seems to be okay. To be honest there's nothing special about it. Battery life is acceptable, it's close to a stock rom, it doesn't have bugs, it has Nimpo kernel, vrtweaks which let you install some mods more easily, and the devs are skilled and helpful. That's enough for me

Which one of this roms has BLN already activated?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I've now used villain, darkys, adam's aosp, CM7 and MIUI.
All great roms. Villain and darky are both quite close too stock TW. AdamG AOSP is as about as close to androidstock as you can get-which is clean and simple. CM7 is the ultimate ROM for the tweaker and hacker and its also v fast.
MIUI is the most visually different rom. It looks completely different and has some great visual cues. Battery life its also v good on the latest build (.29 beta 32). Its the one I'm using at the moment, but I switch between it and CM7 on occasion.
you won't go wrong with any and although they aren't fully stable (the non TW ones). I've never had any stability issues with them. Just be prepared to not have an fm radio or full bluetooth audio...
My 2 cents, hope it helps!

P.s. Not sure about lightening but one of the earlier builds of villain gave me the best battery life ever on this phone. I think it was 1.4, but this was about a month ago..

There are quite a few, VillainROM is included. You can also flash a BLN compatible kernel to make BLN work.
Thanks, I may want to stick close to TW-based ROMs for the time being until CM7 is stable and GS2-friendly then I've done MIUI before, its a fantastic ROM for older phones, but of course there's problems with translations sometimes and the UI gets old/too iphone after a while.
currently on lightening 2.2 with nimphetamine 2.04 kernal. More than happy with my battery. I get more than a days use out of it quite easily, battery loss is about 1% an hour in standby and the rom itself is very stable. Ive never had a force close, reboot or anything. Im using the steel blue theme too as i like the look of the icons more.
Ive no plans to try any other roms until a fully released cynagen rom is available which i will try, just to see what the fuss is about more than anything.
any ideas how close we are to a stable cm7 release?

I would also like to know.
A VillainROM user here along with ninphetamine kernel I find this the best combination, battery life is awesome and the devs are useful. It's smooth fast and just well top notch.
I've tried many roms but always come back to VR. The best thing to do is try them and find one for your own liking there are dozens to choose from now. In the future I'll try CM7 as I used to run that on my DHD but as of now I'm happy with the TW roms.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Batista70 ROM w/ Ninpo's 2.0.5 kernel here, so far so good. Runs smooth and quite battery-friendly.
I've used Lite'ning also but somehow the I've run into some battery drain issues with it before. Eye'ing CM7 once it gets a stable release.
The latest CM7 nightly, 13, is running really well, it all seems just as it was on my Desire so far, no crashes, just a lockscreen hang every now and again.
Don't know about the Bluetooth audio as I prefer a wired headset.

I've had this thread subscribed since the beginning and today I just desided to share my experience with CM

What's the best daily for battery & performance?

Ok, so currently I have my girlfriend on the CM9 beta 1 build... and it's ok... but it just isn't quite getting the battery life she would like. So here are the priorities:
1. Need longest battery life
2. Stability is second, but most important with things like google music and youtube.
3. General quickness
We both really like CM9, but I am starting to think she is losing battery faster than normal. I would like input from folks that have tried out almost all the roms and have found the best combo that meets the order of priorities listed. I am willing to go with an additional kernel if the advice is sound and compelling.
Thanks in advance... I would really like to get her on a good daily driver.
I think most people will tell u that each device handles things differently resulting in different battery life..
That being said, I think most would agree that our cm9 is probably not the best choice if battery life is a top priority.. personally, I get the best battery life with cm7, I would recomend that, and if u start feeling saucy, throw a custom kernel on there too for undervolting with voltage control.
If she prefers something touchwiz, there's a lot of good options, try gleangb
As always, wipe data cache and dalvik in cwm before flashing her from cm9 to anything gingerbread.
Good luck!

Lulz! +1 on that. Clean gb battery life is pretty amazing too.
Miui v4 has been pretty good for me also. Miui gingerbread was some of the best battery life i ever had though.
Running aokp for the past few days, and that seems pretty damn good too. Just got it updated, supercharged, samurai'd and undervolted, so we'll see how the next couple days go.
Lots of choices. Drive em all for a day or two and see which gives you the best mileage.

Wow... thanks everyone... CleanGB it will be. Im curious as to why they have gone over a month with no updates?
I think part of it is there isn't much to update. It's a stripped down, optimized 'cleangb', not '50,000 tweaks, hacks, and new features every 5 minutes gb'.
You stop when you get it right. Certain tweaks react differently on each phone so Toadlife leaves those to the user to decide what is right for them.
Man I haven't been on a tw based ROM in ages!!

[Q] GRAM works on AOSP Roms?!

Hey all!

Thanks!

Good Question,
Was wondering this myself
Any opinions on this?
If I had to guess I would think that gram feature is activated through either the rom or kernel, so it probably isnt working on AOSP based ROMs. But thats just a guess due to how the feature activates.

What makes me confused is some reports in those AOSP roms of better battery life!!! I really highly doubt it!
I've had the S2, S3 and never AOSP gives better battery life than stock roms! I think this also applies to highly optimized software like the one on our LG G2 or HTC one!
Its really a toss up on battery life, no matter what phone. It depends on the feature you use and how they are implemented so no one can say AOSP gives better or Touchwiz gives better, or anything like that. Usually it is the apps within the ROM that give the bad battery life, such as Google Now. Stock GNow is just terrible on battery, and from what I can tell LG didnt do anything to GoogleNow to optimize it or change its function in any way. The Samsung or HTC implementation of it may give better battery life. There are also a lot of rom features in system apps that drain a lot more battery in Touchwiz and Sense than the stock AOSP.
The reason people get better battery on AOSP for this phone right now is because of two reasons:
1) the kernel default speed is 1.5GHz, meaning even at max it wont ever drain as much battery as stock
2) AOSP based ROMs have less bloat in them right now that isnt draining as much battery leading to better idle life.
You are partially right but not completely! Software optimisation has a lot of role in here!
A big example is let's say the HTC one being able to deliver 10hrs of browsing on its modest 2300ma. I dare you that AOSP can't do that!
Also see iPhones which have like 1400ma and have some amazing battery life.
So allow me to say you are wrong! Software optimisation has a lot to do!
Besides when I wrote my last comment it was out of experience and not speculation. I always have the same apps and most of the time touchwiz (although it has more bloatware) had mich bettery life! So NO it's not only about the apps! There's something much deeper than that!

Can't say I agree with that at all. Anytime I've changed a stock blaoted rom for a well put together aosp rom the battery has always been better.

Read my reply above sir!
Anyway that's just not the main issue! The question here is Does GRAM works on AOSP or not?!
It would be great, but i'm afraid we need some developer here. Maybe they can port the script from LG frimwares to use it in other roms. I would buy a beer for that hero!

No to being rude, but really doubt that HTC One can deliver 10hrs on browsing. Where did you get this info?

Still can ´t find answer if GRAM works on AOSP roms. Every AOSP rom has really big drain from screen. On LG stock rom top one draining process is system.
So is it because LG rom is heavy bloated and android system on AOKP is so light that screen is bigger drainer or GRAM really doesn´t work on AOSP roms.

Need an advice in choosing a ROM.

Hi guys.
I've using the stock for about 5 months, but it's not as crist fast as my oneolus one.
I'm sure it's a ROM issue and I was thinking to switch to cyanogen. How do u like it and do you like other Roms as well?

Should be an issue from your side because my N6P is flying compared to my OPO.
Factory reset might solve the issue - backup first.

The stock rom is like butter and for sure is way better than my old OPO. Like the others mentioned you should try a factory reset, otherwise try the Purenexus rom, I'm on Purenexus with ElementalX kernel and its coup de grace is the Layers theme engine and customization! Hope this helps

I kicked out Cyanogen about a few years ago when I had the Nexus S. As the above users advised, PureNexus is currently the most-used ROM here, and pair it with your choice of kernel, and you will be good.
I have the OnePlus One too, and it's performance is nowhere near my 6P.
If you're looking for a lot of customizations, DirtyUnicorns or ResurrectionRemix would be great choice too.
Pure nexus, vanir comotio is good. Cyanogen is good. Dirty unicorns is the best. Its fast, perfect on battery, and has anything that exists. Dirty unicorns with their kernel, and I've ran every current ROM.
But I've heard that Cyanogen is still not well developed for this phone, is this true? or can it be used as a daily user ?
After enabling developer options, try reducing Windows Animation Scale and Transition Animation Scales

I may be in the minority but I prefer screwd ROM. The 4/8 milestone release is very smooth, fast, & stable. I was a long time RR user, but since "OK google" detection from the lock screen wasn't reliable Ive switched. I've tried a lot of 6p ROMs tho & pure nexus is a great, stable ROM. I didn't have the best luck with cyanogen, even tho for other devices its been one of my favorite. & some cyanogen based ROMs ive had some minor issues with. For reliability & stability I'd go pure nexus or screwd. For customization I'd go Resurrection Remix, but those are simply my personal preference. DU is also a great rom. Theres lots of ROMs to choose from. I like to try em a wide selection & then decide. Afterall what's the point of having a nexus device if you're going to leave it stock. I guess for me thats any device tho.
Pure nexus rom for sure
I have been using it since I bought my 6p

On touch wiz everything works including fingerprint. Just install duki kernel and disable dvfs through firefds xposed module to have maximum performance possible. Thats the best rom without a doubt.
I am using it right now and i get 57-58k on antutu. And battery life is almost 5hrs of Screen on time with moderate usage.
