1st day, 3 thoughts: vzw wifi calling, Fitbit sync, case - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I cancelled my pixel 2 xl order and got the essential instead. Replacing a note 5 on Verizon. So far so good. Cam is slow but ok pic quality. Size is perfect. Love losing the crap vzw and Samsung apps. Headphone amp is surprisingly good thru the dongle. Three issues:
1. No wifi calling on verizon. Essential support says the phone can do it but Verizon hasn't approved it. No word on if or when.
2. Fitbit won't sync to phone
3. Only one case option and it covers the accessory pins which rules out audio or dock accessories. Don't care about 360 cam

Anyone coming from HTC 10 or M9?

The U 11 is not as good as I expected, specially for the audio part as it doesn't have a 3.5mm jack and the bundled adapter is perhaps very slightly louder than S8 but the sound quality is said to be better on the S8. Also the official U 11 is postponed till July in my country, only the grey market one is available right now and it costs a leg, +130$ compared to the S8 (grey market too)
So I am tempted again by the S8 which has undoubtedly the best screen in 2017, so here my questions for people coming from the HTC 10 or M9, and even actual S8 users:
-Are you afraid of screen burn-in? I usually use my phone's screen as Car dashboard to control music in my car so it can stay 1 hour with the screen activated, the HTCs LCD won't do any burn-in but what about Amoled of the S8?
-How's music on the earphone jack using your own iems? Are too far from HTC 10 and M9 audio power?
-How big are the chances to get a red tint screen nowadays?
-I always used my 10 in a Fiit VR headset for watching VR Movies, how's the S8 screen in a Fiit VR or BoboVR Z4?
-And of course do you regret getting the S8 instead of waiting for the U 11?
I'm coming from the htc 10. I don't have answers to a lot of your questions unfortunately but I can give you my thoughts. Using the supplied akg earbuds from the s8, music from the s8 sounds very good but on the 10 I feel its still better. not a difference that makes me wish i had my 10 back tho. as for burn in this is my first amoled screen and I use my phone as a display while driving and run Waze for my 45 min drive to work and then when I head home. so far no issues with the screen being on the whole drive and I don't anticipate there being any. yes, the maps change while driving but the nav and status bar are always on and I don't see issues yet. Red tint I do not notice and even if I did I think it's fixable with the display settings. never used vr so can't comment on that.
I do not regret getting this over the u11. I prefer a phone that I can easily use one handed. the 10 was about at the limits of what I could use one handed and the s8 is better in this area where the u11 is bigger than the 10 and is comparable to the pixel xl which I felt was way too big imo. I appreciate the headphone jack on the s8 despite people saying it's going away eventually, I normally use bt earbuds but there are times I want to listen to something quickly and just pull out wired buds instead of having to pair my bt ones.
if you're coming from the 10 the things you will notice are that the 10 was still a great phone compared to the s8 and the s8 doesn't feel much faster than the 10. there will be a slight learning curve with Samsung's ui which you will adjust to but you will be annoyed by how the 10 seemed to do things better. new features with the s8 will make up for that and the screen will look gorgeous coming from the 10 but you will see that the 10 still had a great screen as well. volume buttons on the opposite side compared to the 10 are annoying and still annoy me when using the camera which I'll explain below. the fingerprint sensor on the s8 will drive you mad after using the 10 front fps which imo fps on the front is my preference. both are very fast, assuming you get placement on the s8 correct the first time, this helps with a case on it. Battery life is better on the s8 most likely due to the cpu but not by much. I got over 4 hours sot with the 10 and get over 5 now with the 28 with similar usage. Camera on the s8 is superior to the 10 but again not by much, I still took fantastic shots with the 10. with the 10 I used volume button to snap pics and it was right there when shooting in landscape mode, with the s8 I have to use the on screen button with my right hand which I find results in blurry pics sometimes.
initially, i had buyers remorse going from the 10 to the s8 but after adjusting to Samsung's ui I'm happy with it. that being said, I don't think the upgrade from the 10 to the s8 is worth it due to it being only a slightly better phone. If you're looking for an upgrade and want to be comparable to the 10 I would consider the one plus 5 coming soon, tho last I saw they dont have a headphone jack either. if you have any other questions feel free to ask me.
Thanks for the details!
I think I will go toward the U 11, yesterday someone told me that VR movies on google cardboard compatible headsets (which I have) will get black bars on the screen making the viewable screen just 5.1'' due to the weird 18/9 ratio, the U 11 is 5.5'' but still 16/9 so it will use 100% of the screen
I came from the HTC 10. No i don't regret it.
1. I am not afraid of burn in, I will isle back to T-Mobile under manufacturer warranty and get a replacement with no deductable for the defect.
2. This was one of my biggest fears, before buying the S8 i had done as much research as possible and most people seemed to be happy with S8 audio. After getting the phone quality of audio was pretty good but not loud enough for me. So another user posted to free Adapt sound apk with package disabler from the play store and download Fx equalizer and that made a big difference. Then i used the htc earbuds i got from HTC as a gift and the combo is great, music i robust enough, and now loud enough. So no root audio for s8 based on these mods worked great for me.
3. Don't know anything about red tint on the phone so not wired about it, of it happens i will use solution from number 1 again.
4. I haven't used VR so can't comment on that part.
??
Thanks!
I think I am gonna take an S8 then.
HTC keeps postponing the release here and the price will be more than an S8 + a used GearVR.
Sunshine doesn't look like it will be available for the U11 so root = no warranty
I love HTC but I have to be more practical this time and take the S8

LG V20 worth getting in 2017 & which model?

Do you still think the V20 is worth getting in 2017 in the context of S8/+ that's here & coming Essential phone, Pixel 2s, Note 8, V30 none of which are expected to have a user replaceable battery it seems (could this be the last high end model with a user replaceable battery after the Samsung Note 4) & its current <$400 price?
So what do you still like about your V20, what don't you like & is there a best model to get for updates or other factors?:good:
My initial impressions/background: I liked the V20 when it first came out for its removable battery, expandable storage, bright IPS sharp display, fingerprint reader & power button in a very sensible location, the secondary screen & IR blaster but didn't think it was worth the $800 price without front facing stereo speakers & wasn't particularly impressed by the cameras especially front facing but now it can be had for <$400 & hate my Nexus 6P battery life at this point while loving my Samsung Note 4 quick swappable battery. I also have a Moto X Pure I got a great deal on ~18 months ago with its great front facing stereo speakers & bright IPS display & expandable storage but it's battery life also is weak without a user replaceable battery.
I will take another look at the V20 at its current price, is there are difference between unlocked http://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-US996-Unlocked-v20-titan & T-Mobile http://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-H918-Titan-v20 (which I could unlock if needed) with warranty & international LG V20 H990DS Unlocked International Model-No Warranty model in terms of updates or other factors because I've read that the Unlocked US996 model has not been getting updates while I'm wondering if the T-Mobile or International gets updates..?
Despite Quad DAC, I was disappointed by the V20 speaker but have since found https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HEYIPGK impressive headphone jack speaker & https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XYBWXG1 cool compact floating bluetooth waterproof speaker that will make it easier to bypass that weakness & could use another phone I have if the front facing camera continues to disappoint. I also saw some impressive V20 video optical image stabilization footage.
-Thx
I watched a lot of reviews before getting the v20. Coming from the Note 4 edge I can say I'm happy with it. I just got sick of Samsungs bloatware.
I would say if you're not an audiophile and use your camera in auto mode then there is little going for the v20

Interesting since I have the Note 4 & love the battery swapability, I'm going to watch more video reviews before a decision. I am an audiophile so its single downward speaker was a deal breaker at it original 2x asking price compared to my Nexus 6P & Moto X Pure front facing stereo speakers but just would likely use external speakers (headphones-bluetooth speakers) with it. I'll test out the camera manual mode features when I take another look, I like options as long as it doesn't take too long to get through them.
Do you have the unlocked or a carrier model-do you care about the updates issue?
If a removable battery is a high priority then the v20 would be worth it on that alone because I think this phone is the last of the removable battery featured in a high end phone. V30 looks to be going the way of the G6.
Really sucks I am disappointed with smart phones trend to go the non-removable, glass enclosed and stupid 30 minute water resistance.
Its an excellent phone and I think it's a better value than the G6 is.
Samsung is just bloated garbage, so much junkware I would not pick an s8. Samsung has this idea that their phones are worth more than the competition and their continued trend of increasing phone prices is something I do not support.
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Another nice feature is the second screen, set it to "always on" (still turns off in your pocket etc) and you can see the time and notifications without having to touch the phone at all.
The v20 is just a bit taller then the Note 4 but slightly thinner, it fits just a well in my hand and feels better due to its all metal back. If you like the size of the Note you'll have no problem with the v20
My biggest complaint is the glass has a slight curve at the top and bottom that make full tempered glass screen proctors nearly impossible. I have noticeable scratches in my screen because I didnt want to use a plastic screen protector!!!
Also the power button on the back to me is a bit weird and I miss the physical home buttons.

I do find it ironic that Samsung moved away from the Note 4's removable battery to subsequently have enclosed battery defects overheat-explode costing them billions which could have been avoided if they just stuck with the removable batteries that had made consumers-power users happy. Also why not just have an Active/Sport model or even Samsung designed cases for those who want manufacture certified water resistance..?
I did know before I got the Nexus 6P that its enclosed battery would cause issues but not as bad or quick as it did which only reinforces my appreciation for removable batteries. I will likely still go through the hassle of replacing its enclosed battery but I've had to carry around and depend on external batteries with a sense of dread over the N6P's degrading internal battery life. I may ask the Essential phone team for example why they & Google no longer care about removable batteries or headphone jacks (is it to conform to Apple proprietary "curator" ways instead of empowering the actual end users)?
I'd be willing to pay the high prices if there weren't such compromises..

I typically use a case (with a lip to protect the screen) like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5M72E0 without screen protectors & have never had screen damage. Gorilla glass 4 with case lip not enough?
I like its fingerprint-power button location & hope it will cause less accidental power offs than on sides near volume controls & I haven't personally missed the physical home button. Regarding the kind of control the user has over the secondary screen I found the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yInN7OV4M3k useful.
When I take another look at the V20 this week I will run through all the options but always appreciate owner experience feedback
So no difference between the US996 Unlocked model vs carrier/T-mobile model in terms of updates (or Wi-Fi Calling calling)?

Sorry, but an audiophile would not be interested in the quality of the speakers even if there were two of them.
Still My Daily Driver
I purchased an unlocked G4 which was supposed to have been comparable with all my T-mobile carrier bands. But I later learned in a Redditt post that it in fact was missing an important one which resulted in connectivity problems. So when the prices dropped on the V20, I made sure to get the carrier model. Now I have much better reception as well as Wifi Calling and FM radio, neither of which are available through the unlocked version.

OK jian I'll let you the true audiophile define what sounds good to me in every practical circumstance.. I'll also give up bluetooth forever only to buy your brand of wired equipment to live in your good graces..
I profusely apologize that I can appreciate handheld dual front facing stereo speakers as offered in my Nexus 6P & Moto X Pure.
Sarcasm aside, I won't make excuses for LGs easily muffled V20's uninspiring single downward firing mono speaker.
BTW, is there a failing speaker issue https://www.google.com/search?q=lg+v20+speaker+issue or is it the speaker grille according to https://android.gadgethacks.com/how...eaker-sound-with-simple-hardware-mod-0176333/ & https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/enable-dual-speaker-stereo-sound-your-lg-v20-0176433/ ?
Lg v20 DS990 is below $400 on ebay. Great price. Standby is amazing, manual mode and audio superb. Battery drains 15% or more per hour with screen on, but batteries are cheap. Auto camera mode is poor, including autofocus. Great build quality, no bootloops. So if you are okay with these things, go for it! It's crazy paying 800 for Samsung, made from effing glass! And this comes with screen protector already applied. Dropped it once with Spiegel cash (must have case), no problems. Phone is fast and I love secondary screen.

Thanks Medevac1 but that's comparing 2 different devices, has anyone compared or experienced the unlocked US996 model vs the T-mobile H918 model on T-Mobile?

Where I usually am T-Mobile is best at the moment (speed tested all carriers but not with this device) but that could change over time or obviously when traveling where T-Mobile is far less reliably good so shouldn't I get the unlocked US996 model..?
T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling (& FM radio) can not be enabled in the unlocked US996 model?

Anyone here in the US using the LG V20 H990DS 64GB Dual Sim, GSM Unlocked International Model, No Warranty model on T-Mobile or any carrier?

Why can't GM radio be enable I think what US unlocked version?
My post was more a comparison of experiences rather than phone to phone. Both the LG 4 unlocked and the V20 were US996 models which were originally designed to work for US Cellular phones. I was just pointing out that given this there are certain trade offs with using these phones on the TMO network.
Pretty sure I'm getting one just because of the replaceable battery.
Just can't decide between the unlocked US version and Verizon version.
LG just announced they were making the bootloader unlock app available for all Unlocked models of those phones.
I think the VZW version may have been updated to eliminate the unlocking capability.

The following phones can now have their bootloader's unlocked by LG unlocking tool.
http://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader.dev?categoryId=CTULRS0703
• LG G6: US997.USA for the U.S. open market
• LG G6: H870 for the European market
• LG V20: US996.USA for the U.S. open market
• LG V10: H960A for the European market and Android M (Except France)
• LG G5 SE: H840 for the European market
• LG G5: RS988 for the U.S. open market
• LG G5: H850 for the European market
• LG G4: H815 for the European market
So this makes the unlocked version a plus.
Checked out the V20 again Monday night in an AT&T store but only had like 20 minutes where it was next to the G6 & not too far away from the Samsung S8+. Issues I'd like to be able to resolve before hitting a buy button even at this lower price:
1) If I bought the V20 it would be the worst built in speaker I've ever put up with (maybe this unit was defective but I shouldn't assume so). Beyond videos, music however brief, voicecalls, I'd frankly like everything to sound acceptable without external speakers so I'd have to try How To Fix/Improve LG V20 Speaker Sound Quality. That YouTube video unfortunately does not demonstrate before-after, has anyone done this "simple hardware mod" described at https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/improve-your-lg-v20s-speaker-sound-with-simple-hardware-mod-0176333 with what results?
I could comment that the G6 speaker did sound more acceptable in a brief test (but still not impressive) & when I looked at the same downward firing speaker location on the G6 it did not appear to have any or at least the same thick crowded speaker grill that could be muffling the V20 sound so perhaps it could be improved..
2) Screen is too blue as reported at https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/help/color-calibration-screen-to-6504k-v20-t3484489 so I'd have to try https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/themes/arent-satisfied-v20-screen-color-temp-t3492061 - https://forums.androidcentral.com/lg-v20/739129-how-adjustlg-v20-screen-color-calibration.html , has anyone done this?
The AT&T store model does not let me get into settings so as is the V20 screen was not as good as my Moto X Pure (colors or brightness) but the V20's brightness spectrum seemed acceptable & hopefully the aforementioned color adjustment can be improved while my Nexus 6P whites are comparatively yellowish. The Samsung S8+ colors & brightness were impressive but still didn't feel the need to get it overall especially without a removable battery.

ymDroid posted about https://flash.newegg.com/Product/9SIAAM853A4091 where you can see the potentially sound muffling speaker grill in question that owners have removed as detailed above, close ups below:
I can try to install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.lumen on the store demo model for color calibration controls. Even unrooted, I find it worth the install.

Should i upgrade my phone to G6?! - people who have it can help me?!

So, i have a V10 since 2016, two years and i dont think i hold a phone for so long. I am used to have a phone for 8/10 months maximum but since i never see a real update to my V10 i keep it until now.
I am facing a "huge" problem: wich one should i buy, or if is better to keep my V10 in a hope to see a better phone to update this. Since last week i run everyday to websites i know with excelent prices and about to buy a G6 but...i think twice, in fact i think almost twenty.
My V10 have all i need: good camera, HiFi DAC, IR Blaster, removable battery, amazing screen, second screen, perfect buid quality.
Now, i am in love with G6 Astro Black and my main thing about is they dont have the features i love the most (IR Blaster and Audio DAC) but they have 2 i want now: more screen to body ratio and a wide angle camera because i take a lot of selfies with the main camera and the camera i have in V10 i need to put it a lot far away to fit 2 or 3 people in the photo.
IR blaster is not a huge deal since i pretend to keep my V10 to use for the week (work) and use the G6 in the weekends (fun and photos).
I have another player to the game: Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 i can grab it for the same price as G6 and that came into my mind, i love the design, ok they dont have IR Blaster and even worse it dont have headphone jack or hifi DAC eighter, and i know with my eyes closed the G6 have a way way way better camera.
My main problems to buy a G6 is:
1st - The rear glass is easy scratchable?
2nd - Battery life, how many SoT are you having?
3rd - Audio quality, have EQ with how many frequency's to control?
4th - The metal around is easy scratchable if you dont have a case?
5th - the always on display make some kind of ghost image on the display when awake the phone from sleep?
6th - G6 is good for about 350$?
Thanks to all can help me.
1. No, actually it's very difficult to scratch.
2. Over 7 hours.
3. V4A + ARISE will give you amazing results when configured properly.
4. No but if you are concerned about this I recommend very thin and transparent case by Nillkin.
5. No.
6. Yes but you can get it cheaper, probably.

thanks for reply.
Well, over 7 hours?! really? with brightness always below 10-20% i belive, because i only get 4-5 hours with my V10 when i put it bellow 20%.
Yeah i dont wanna put Viper4 in my device for now, is not very much convenient for me, and because i dont want to root a phone too fast, i may get it to the test for about 2 months and if everything is all right then i root it.
I see some Ringke cases or a skin for it and maybe thats what im going to get.
Cheaper?! well, in my currency (€) the lower and in my country they cost 349€ i think is a good price because i dont want to buy it outside and if so i probably buy in Spain not much far from it. Since the lowest i have seeing is in spain (339€) but the website i see change the price to 374€ next day i have see it, i dont know why.
I was getting over 7 hours with 30% of brightness. Of course I debloated my phone first. Even without V4A sound quality is good. I'm listening on Yamaha EPH-100.
yes the rear glass it's very difficult to scratch
but the camera glass it's very very easy to scratch
The quality of images decreases sharply after only one month
i found 3 scratchs after 1 hours after unboxing my g6
no problem with my v10 yet ! only for g6
this is big problem if you love camera
you need to buy new camera lens , but no waterproof after that ?

Are you sure? I have no scratches at all after almost a year of "heavy" use.

1) Seems yes according to the net, mine is unscratched
2) 2-3 under mobile network, max 6 under wifi
3) if you don't root avarage according to my experience on H870 without QDAC
4) Never used without a case, sorry.
5) Yes and not, after 12 months of usage I sometimes see the AOD un grey background, but it's not so clear and with any other background it's not visibile
6) it depends on what altertives you have and what do you search, if updates and battery are important I would buy a Nokia 7 plus, but if the camera is the most important thing at this price G6 is a pretty good device

i love LG, my last 4 devices was LG so, nothing special for what make me chose LG G6 now, ok, the feature i need most is the camera wide angle and only G6 can offer it in a budget, i dont see better option for the same price.
In hope next year maybe G6 get Android P im happy with, since my V10 receive last update 1 year ago to Nougat 7.0.
alternatives is only 1, well put Nokia 7 Plus in game now is 2: Mi Mix 2 and Nokia 7 Plus, but none of the last offer wide angle even dont offer the things i will miss in V10 (IR Blaster, HiFI DAC).
Its seems a decision was made now, but i only will buy G6 from here to a month, in hopes the price lower a bit more.
Thank youuu
I love the g series, i love my g6 but xiaomi products are great and future prof, treble enable etc... So if I had to choose I'll go to the mi side..
My camera glass has multiple scratches in it and I always have the case on and dont put anything in the same pocket as my phone.
Always on display shouldnt cause any issues because it it isnt amoled. I use it and havent noticed any type of burn in.
I paid 295 for mine mint condition used and I'm very happy with it. If you do buy one, be careful what model you buy since some are not bootloader unlockable.

Moto z4 Battery Life, and thoughts

I'm highly surprised by the battery life so far. The phone seems snappy, and the camera is amazing ?
So far after 18 hours of battery and 4 hours of screen on time I'm at 41%.
Things to note:
1: the Moto z4 has a good camera from what I've seen (haven't ever tested the pixel though) night mode is fantastic, and the 25MP front shooter is beautiful and fast. Camera app seems snappy to me.
2: battery life has been long as hell. With use, the battery lasts forever. Music, reading, Facebook messenger, Snapchat, web browser; location and data on at all times.
3: software experience seems very snappy, and I love the Moto actions. Moto peek display is fun, and Google's hotword works better even when screen off than I had expected.
4: sound quality is great, sadly the Aux sound doesn't seem as good as my old LG V30 but the Phones speaker is very loud, and sounds good with Aux anyway. No Dolby, or Dac.
5: the fingerprint scanner can be finicky, and I have found that it has to do with if there is like dust on the screen or not. Either way, the scanner I like to use anyway, it's fun.
6: sadly the Mods do have a tiny edge feeling when attached, but that's not a big deal to me. I plan on getting quite a few of the Mods though!
7: the screen is absolutely crisp, and Crystal clear. Goes really dim, and doesn't seem bad in the sun.
8: there seems to be a slight deadspot/slow reaction on each edge of the screen. Whenever typing, it's snappy but when long pressing the side keys to get a character it takes a few milliseconds for the phone to recognize the input lol.
I'll add more later if requested or comes to mind
Phones I've had: LG Optimus v, htc one s, Moto x pure, OnePlus 5, Galaxy s9, LG V30, Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus, LG Optimus G, Optimus G pro, Samsung Galaxy S4, Zenfone 2 Lazer. No specific order
I second the op I love in an area with crap signal and still get excellent battery life.. I've disabled a ton of the gapps though and use davx for syncing contacts and calendar (I used to use miceog) I haven't signed into a Google account and it pisses me off that play store updates without my permission! I don't have a Google account on for Pete's sake.
Overall even though mine will never see root or twep it's pretty good for a locked down device and the build quality feels like the old Droid x I owned.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
It's not only the best phone I've ever used, I think it's clearly far & away the best in class for a phone today and I genuinely want it to raise bars for what's possible with the hardware. As a package, it's remarkable. Best in class overall & in many areas.
I just love it. Nothing is a disappointment. Getting on the xiaomi.eu ROM negated the ill effects of importing a deGoogled phone. It's reliable, charges in ludicrously quick time, is a fantastic camera, seems unofficially pretty splashproof. Feels good, looks good, sounds good, works with everything
Yes, it gets five snowflakes
A few weeks in I have an update!
I'm in the UK. I switched to EE as they confirmed what I figured out: band 20 is not their only 4g band for rural areas. All the old 3g bands are now 4g bands.
So I get 4g everywhere. I live in semi rural Cheshire. If you didn't tell me this had no band 20 I wouldn't know.
And the phone is running Xiaomi.eu rom. As no root yet I also run Blockada. The combination of both means no web ads and no app adverts either.
I feel like I've solved 75% of the software problems. Between this and the flawless hardware I think it's a flawless phone. As long as you're not a lazy user who never reads threads or works things out.
No notification light? TrueEdge works a dream for edge lighting customisable by app or even contact
Headphones quiet? Not with the EU ROM, no stupid warning either
Google maps? Working. I can see where I was yesterday
Everything else is just gravy. I can manage over a day between charges but it's a struggle. This can only go up with root, Greenify works without root to an extent but I do miss lspeed.
I would like to say. You're still importing a phone built for China. I cannot recommend this if you're too lazy to read the EU thread and put on that ROM which makes it westernised and with Google. You'll end up with a phone stuck in Chinese you leave to waste.
In that sense it's not a full recommendation. However if you're on XDA you should at least be open to the idea of modifying your phone for the best performance.
But it's my daily phone now. I use it for work and play. For music , video, streaming to Chromecast, amazing photos (seriously. Plus you can set it to RAW)..
If you buy it and never want to modify it you're either a fool or live in China.
If you buy it and want to unlock it welcome to XDA! You are reading a review of the best phone I've ever used (and I've been modifying phones since jailbreaking my iPhone 3g)
I miss my stereo speakers on the mi 10 pro and that's it!
If this phone had the same speakers this would be untouchable!
Build quality is amazing. I got the silver 16gb ram with 512 memory and I can't be more happy. Some websites like gsm arena state the silver model is actually ceramic not glass. Can't confirm
Antipecterial screen protector and case in the box are a wonderful touch by xiaomi
Screen is fantastic. Haptic feedback is too notch. Great hardware from all aspects
Speakers are good. Samsung level I believe but no where near the amazing ones on the mi 10 pro!
Battery is good. this beast just changed how I use my phones. Now I don't leave it overnight to charge it worry if I run out of juice. Between the 120w charger at home. 100w car charger and 55w wireless on my desk it is never below 80% at any given time on a busy day
Camera is good. Wide-angle videos looks like a GoPro. This is the first xiaomi I don't install gcam on.
I had a Mi 11 Ultra in 2021 but it broke after 2 months and requested a refund.
Last month I bought Mi 10 Ultra used for 320€. Very good deal, but.. taking consideration of being a used phone let me says these thoughts..
Cons first:
The fingerprint sensor doesn't work Calibration missing, suspected that it had a screen replaced, bought the 4 in 1 Calibration tool RL-071B(Yellow striped instead, wonder if thats the issue) and i cant manage to calibrate it on CTI menu, tried dozens of times, white paper black paper, diferent positions of the finger, diferent fingers, disabled dark mode, bright room, dark room, replaced twrp persist.img from stock and custom roms, tried diferent roms, official, xiaomi.eu. only havent rooted the device yet.
It's 3 step calibation, "Put flesh flat", "Put black flat" and "Put flesh chart horizontaly", and most of the error is "1505 bad point cluster".
I saw tones of videos of people succeding it but I grow tired of this and almost lost hope, most local repair shops in my city don't even know these workarounds.
So i'm only using pattern and facial unlock sadly. If anyone want to help me find another solution for the fingerprint, PM me.
The camera while using either Xiaomi.eu or oficial china stock miui 13.0.4.0/13.0.5.0, Miui 12/A10 12.0.9.0 have camera focus issues. Just tonight on 13.0.5.0 xiaomi.eu recorded a video at night and it keeps loosing focus and take too long to recover with objects more then at 3 meter distance.
Sometimes even close objects and specially in low light.
The battery charges from 5% to 100% in 40min with 120w charger (i have a 120w chinese charger and a 120w european charger both bought by the previous user) in 13.0.4.0/13.0.5.0. Read somewhere that from 12.0.6.0 to 12.0.9.0 Xiaomi started to cut down on charging speed. making the 120w useless. This is mostly a 67w charger time like the Mi 11 Ultra. Maybe to avoid damaging the battery since its a Li-polimer and not a Si-O2 like the Mi 11/12 Ultra.
I have the Xiaomi 80W wireless charger adapter when i bought the mi 11 ultra but i don't like cause it makes abit of noise while chargind by blowing fans to it to keeping the device cool down. Charging times are around 1hour 30min more or less.
Display autobrightness during low light is too low but this is a simpthom of most Xiaomi devices. (fixed by flashing a fix but might lead to bootloop on certain roms)
Sadly, only way to use stock navigation gestures with third party launchers like my Nova launcher was to use a Android 10 rom, now i have to resort to keep navigation buttons and use 3rd party navigation gestures like "My Gestures" if i want to use Nova launcher. This is fixed in Samsung devices including my Galaxy Note 10+ Android12. Damn you Xiaomi..
I don't use Android 10 cause Bluetooth might glitch as it happen to me where i couldnt turn it on on miui 12, if you dont update Bluetooth and the update only happens in miui 13 to my knowledge. Fixed it by flashing miui 13/A12 again.
Longest wait i ever had on unlocking bootloader, 360 hours, my Mi 11 Ultra was around 168 hours back then.
Pros now:
Excelent detail of cameras ofc. Specialy during day shots the automatic swtich to ultrawide for macros is great (Missing that option on Mi 11 ultra back then)
The ultrawide lens is so wide that need to have special care not to put my fingers in front of them. xD
And the Zoom lens has OIS and its good. But there were alof of misconceptions that it was a 10x zoom but it ain't its 120mm so its closer to 5x, the good thing it's a 48mp zoom so it can binn zoom shots for extra detail.
The curve display is not that curved, like some curved smartphones, which is a good thing to avoid acidental touches and the Miui setting also helps on that.
The display brightness outdoor during sunlight is also good.
I had a Galaxy Note 10+ and i liked the Vivid colors option and for the mi 10 ultra to have the same kind of colors they need to be in "saturated option, Warm temperature".
My used battery is showing excelent quality in settings and it's lasting a good ammount. I have everything turn on (120hz, Dual Wifi(see bellow), Bluetooth on with Honor magic watch 2 connected and Health app with no battery optimization, location on, dark mode on, NFC on, Always on display with mountain superwallpaper on, exception is mobile data off).
With accubattery is showing bettween 7hour20min use and now recently with xiaomi.eu 13.0.5.0 it's showing 8hours30min but it's probably still updating to my use since i flashed it)
The sound is loud (not as loud as Mi 11 Ultra is i recall) and has a good balance between stereo speakers.
The Equalizer options with Bluetooth earbuds and probably work with usb-c are amazing. Lets you Amp those your earbuds to levels i rarely see in other phones, and lets you choose Xiaomi earbuds presets even if they are not Xiaomi earbuds like my Soundcore Life A2 NC. It's an amazing feature to be honest. The virtual surround option there is mostly a gimmick and adds abit of eco.
Wifi range is trully wonderful, i had several phones, Sony, Samsung and a Vivo Nex S xD and none compare to the MI 10/11 Ultras, My opinion is probably based by the restrictions of Specific Absorption Rate(SAR) that in Europe and the US has, that limits wifi and network quality and on China these must be diferent. This is the radiation that the phones produce. If i ever get cancer you can say i told you so... just kiding really.
My Galaxy note 10+ was always leaving me in a bad spot when it comes to that where i couldn't show my friends a proper youtube video cause it was always loading.
Despite not metting my country requirments for 5g and 4g networks, missing 4g B20 and 5G N78 i still have good signal quality and 5g connects alot of times in my city. Never done a speed test cause my traffic is very limited but no problem watching a 1080p youtube video, and i had issues with my 4g Galaxy Note 10+.
Haptic feedback motor is also very good, not as good as Mi 11 Ultra, but it only works for MIUI UI and not youtube videos or games for example to my knowledge.
There are hidden options that can be recalled using the App called Miui Hidden settings from NetVor.
These hidden settings include Dual Wifi that was only Mi 11 Ultra and connect to a 2.4g and 5G wifi at same time to have better speeds and stable connection, or have 2 diferent wifi at home and stay connected to them all the time. At my home i have 1gb speeds and im getting 550-720mb wifi speeds but with dual wifi 2.4gz+5ghz i get 850mb.
They let you enable better HDR videos if that works (not sure) and also enable the never enabled tecnology called MEMC for smoother videos (also not sure it works properly).
That's it.
Despite some mishaps it's a wonderful device, if one day i grow tired of it and want to buy another phone it's going to be hard to sell if fingerprint is not working properly.
