Has anyone been able to watch YouTube videos in higher res than 1080p on the Essential Phone? I can't seem to. There is no option to select resolutions higher than 1080.
Nvm. Just realized the screen doesn't support 1440.

What's the best resolution for this screen then? I'm on the LG G3 and I'm trying not to downgrade in terms of resolution.

That's ironic lol, it's 2560 x 1312 officially.... So it's just under 1440p. I would think it could do a slightly cropped 1440p but I'm betting youtube just doesn't support it.

Get the rootless YouTube mod, iytbp (on xda search) install the Laura almeida version. You can force 1080 with it, and have background playback.

Probably not, the RAZR M's screen isn't HD itself
1440p is now available as a quality setting. Looks like they updated it on their side. 1440p videos look crazy on this screen.
Youtube buffers like a madman for me on Verizon. Sprint 3g users right beside me clowning my "superior" service because they have no issues. Wtf is up with that
finally. damn!

Aww yiss
Does it select this quality by default or do I need to pick it somehow?

I second that mine buffers like crazy too even with excellent coverage.
Mine doesn't seem to buffer. On YouTube it doesn't show high res. I'm only seeing like 440p. When it does YouTube Vevo I get 1080p however on most videos. I can't seem to find anything in 1440p though. I'm not even sure I'm setting YouTube correctly.

Mine does that during certain hours in the late evening. Almost like they are conserving power to their towers. But most of the time I'm at 30+ mb/sec

And here I thought it was only me. It's just the app though cause if you click on a YouTube link and select Chrome instead of YouTube app it plays flawlessly. But if I hit the link and choose YouTube app it's impossible to watch. So there for it has to be an app problem.

I have no idea where or what you are referring to if that is your answer to my post w/ screenshot of my only available settings in latest you tube. Or am I missing something to look for elsewhere?
Under Quality within Youtube app:
Auto O

You have to search for a video that was uploaded to YouTube in 1440p. Not all are. In fact, most aren't. He was suggesting that you enter "1440p" into the search box in the YouTube app so that it will bring up videos that are available in that resolution.

You're welcome. Happy to help.
Search for "4K Demo UHD 1440P"
I went to settings in the app and there is no option for 1440P so I choose auto, and believe me that's more then 720P which is the highest listed.
app still needs work and an option to choose 1440P but this video looks amazing on the Note 4!
I have the 1440p option but doesnt matter because this last piece of $&% update broke the app, now it only plays like 10 seconds then the video freezes but audio continues to play.
I am on YouTube version 6.0.13 and I have the 4k option. The option only pops up when you have a 4k video on tap. Very impressive.

Coming from the S7 edge which ran smoothly with 2k res, the new s8 on the same res is much slower.
Has anyone experienced the same problem?
By running, simple animations, or heavy 3d games?
You have to be more specific
The UI animations, closing / opening apps animations etc...

It's the Touchwiz Launcher that's having the issue. Samsung built this incredible phone but they can't optimize the one app you interact with more than anything! The dropped animations when closing some apps (especially closing any browser) are maddening! I promise you if you install Nova Launcher you will see a pretty dramatic difference.
But it doesn't happen with fhd+...
Try nova launcher, btw 2k resolution is 1080p.

2k is 1440, 1080 is Full HD, 720 is HD. 4K is 3840 if im not wrong.

3840 is called 4k because it has 4000 pixels, so tell me why 1920x1080 isn't called 2k? Its exactly half of 4k and has almost 2000 pixels width wise.
2560x1440 is technically 2.5k but no one calls it that, the 2k and 4k names normally are used for tv/movie resolutions.

That's just how it's called. I have no idea why, but a quick google gave this: https://forums.evga.com/m/tm.aspx?m=1874357&p=1
---------- Post added at 12:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:01 PM ----------
BTW, to OP: If you're talking about opening/closing apps, it has to do with the launcher, as Touchwiz launcher has its own set of animations which isn't very optimised for 2K resolution yet. Nova launcher helps change the animations. If you're talking about switch off/on the display, I get that some times too, on 2K.

I don't see anything that supports your argument in that link, it supports mine more than yours.
The problem has been solved with QG5 (July 2017) update.
nwver used touch wiz launcher on s8, only Nova launcher installed as system app, there is never any lag at all, not once.

I agree with you. 2560x1440, is 3k. It seems they seem to round up so that I don't get how they keep referring to 3840 to 4k and just half assing the others.
open build prop editor,
Add below line in it,
sys.display-size=3840x2160
Save it,
it should start working right away, if not then reboot after saving the build prop editor line.
Please hit the like button if you liked it.
Refer screenshots for your reference.
But would it make any difference in terms of definition and colors as out beloved device's display is limited to 1080p i.e. Full HD?
Yes, you will notice the difference in terms of sharpness, more vivid colours.
Cast your videos onto TV, you'll be surprised.
Try it out.

Yes indeed i felt the sharpness, No need to cast on tv on device only it gave the comparative difference

People will think how can it give more resolution than the screen's highest resolution, but guys it's not just about resolution, it's about sharpness and colors which you want find in the full hd alone(no doubt it's best) if you compare them both you'll find the difference
Which app did you use to do this i can't do it?
So does it only supersample the video from 4k to 1080p, or everything is in 4k now?
What happen if we screenshot the phone after changing that? Is the screenshot still 1080p pr it's 4k?

Try MKBHDs videos, which are encoded in 4K format.
If it doesn't work for you, then it must be kernel specific problem, it works perfectly fine on AEX ROMs(both nougat and oreo)

Do you experience lag with higher playback speed? Whenever I w watch a video on vp9 codec in 1080p at 2x speed, I always get frame drop
Wonders if it would be worse in higher resolution

I've been using Netflix calibration videos to check the resolution of the videos played. I'm stuck in 720p, which explains why some scenes looks pretty bad.
Do any of you guys manage to play videos in 1080p ?
