Lift to wake - How does it work? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I found out the other day that this phone has lift to wake. My question is: How does it work exactly? Assuming no lockscreen security, does it work like the iPhone and OnePlus 5? i.e. Does it automatically turn on when you lift it toward you so you can interact with the screen, or does it just flash notifications? Can you just lift it up, then swipe to unlock? I'm asking because the phone has no double-tap-to-wake, which is a must-have feature for me, but this is a good compromise.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: To clarify, I'm asking if I can lift the phone and start using it WITHOUT hitting the power button.

Just like you described, lift to wake and notification wake, then you can intertact with it.

Lift it up and it wakes.
It does a black and white version of your lockscreen.
If you tap it hard enough, you can wake it btw without lifting it up.

I believe it uses either the gyroscope or acceleration sensor, or both. If you twist your phone or move it quickly, the dim display will turn on. Just like others have pointed out.

Also you can have it set up to be unlocked and ready when lifting up by setting up smart Lock. If your home your device can stay unlocked and when you lift it up it will be ready to go.

Do we know if we can enable a tap to wake or wave to wake?
Is this something we would need root for?

this function not smooth as iPhone.

Program to wake screen by detecting movement?

On my Verizon TP2, the screen goes to sleep after a minute or so. It doesn't wake up when I pick it up or even with a tap on the screen or keyboard; it requires that you hit the stupid wake button on the side of the phone.
I was wondering if a program exists to make my TP2 operate like my Logitech Harmony One remote; it automatically wakes the screen when I pick it up.
Thanks, I appreciate it.
If someone could make an application like that i would be very thankfull.
While the harmony movement detection is working very well it would be possible on an TP2 as well.
just wave a magnet over it.
the case's magnetic flap will work.
I personally think that a program to wake up the phone by detecting movement is not good idea bcoz it'll keep the device on while you are walking and having the phone in your pocket, so battery life will be affected. Unless you disable that feature when you are carrying it and run the app just when the device is on your desk.
An easy solution would be to disable the wake function if movement longer than 3 or 4 seconds is detected. If in constant motion, like in your pocket when walking, it would remain asleep.
im looking for an app that could allow the device to wake from sleep by a quick double tap on the screen, anyone know if such a thing exists?

power button - slide to unlock

is there any way to just press on the screen to wake it up other then pressing the power button or trackball? if anyone has used an iphone i am looking for simply touch the screen to wake it up and sliding to unlock skipping trackball or power button presses. thanks.
It's possible to wake up the iPhone by touching the screen? Only for jailbroken phones? That's something I've never heard of before.
I don't think that is possible right now, Android would power down the touch sensor to save battery. Just like a stock iPhone does too.
I am interested to know how to do that on the iPhone though, I'd love to do that with my iPod Touch.
ohh thats right i forgot the iphone has to press the home button to wake it up after a long sleep. my iphone is setup to wait the longest time before going into a sleep so if i am waiting for something the backlight turns off and locks the phone but a press on the screen turns on the backlight waits to be unlocked. oh well would be cool to have on n1 though. thanks for the reply.
The program "nolock" in the market makes it so you can use either the trackball or volume buttons to wake the phone. Other than that, I think screen wake would kill your battery. Can't say for sure though.
worth trying this app thanks
Yeah, being an OLED screen, you can't just turn off the backlight. Each pixel is a light all by itself. Otherwise you could probably do the same trick.
No lock or keyguard disabler bypass or disable the lock screen. Root and running a custom rom like CM will let you double click the trackball to unlock the and wake the phone. There is also a menu unlock too.
I have no lock and I like it because its one touch and you're rolling. On the other hand the wake up on trackball also enables the volume key to wake up and I was often unintentionally waking the phone so I disabled it. Going to try the menu wake up next. No hardkey to wear out, and combined with one touch I think it might be a winner for quickly lighting up the unit without the unintended wakes.

Menu wake doesn't do what I believe you may think it does, you still have to press the power button to turn the phone on. Then you press menu to skip the lockscreen.. which in my opinion is not needed. I only said this because you said no hard key will be worn out.. but they still will.

what are you using for that?
Funny that because I just went to go hunt that one down and found that you are indeed correct, it only acts as an alternative to slide to unlock, it does not wake up the phone. Sigh.

Ya ninja'ed me. I use a free market program called No Lock. Pretty much as its name implies it removes the requirement to slide to unlock, can be toggled. One touch of whatever you are using to wake it up and you are off to the races. A must have for types like me that dont use a lock and would prefer to wake and go. The app does have one niggle. It remembers my setting but at every restart and have to toggle it to get it to work.
sounds like i must dl it and worth pressing 1 button to wake up without sliding to unlock.

i see one called mylock that says it automatically starts again after device restart. worth a try.
If she turns up to be a winner pop let us know.

yes i must say it works well. i didnt even try the no luck. it also has more reviews fyi. im keeping it. it also has an addon for something idle. im guessing that idle addon disabled the mylock to enter your security after an x amount of sleep time has passed. sounds ok if u want security enabled i guess but most pay a few cents for it. not for me at this point.

disable screen on with proximity sensor

i have searched around and haven't found quite what im looking for. i find my phone screen is turning on in my pocket and sometimes unlocks. i hear the sound of it unlocking all the time just from the pressure against my leg. i keep it so my screen is faced in because of what i do for work i could easily smash it against something. i have bought a case that helps prevent the side power button and the home button from being pressed but still happens quite often.
what i am looking for is an app/mod that will keep the screen from coming on when the proximity sensor detects that it is in my pocket. this would need to work regardless of whether home/power buttons are pressed or a notification wakes it.
if anyone knows of something like this for our phones i would much appreciate it.
Don't have that app/mod, but you may be interested in this one instead. Killing the home button's ability to wake up the phone. I did this on my S4, although you only need to modify the one file, the gpio-key.kl. You need to be rooted:

Thanks ill give it a try and see if it cuts down on screen on time. I have noticed that ill get notifications and phone calls that will turn the screen on and then simply walking will be enough to swipe and unlock. This screen is much more sensitive than my old epic.

Power button and Lockscreen?

I'm looking at the Axon 7 as a replacement for my ZMAX 2 but I HATE the power button (way too flimsy and easy to press) and lockscreen (laggy and unlocks by accident). Are the ones on the Axon better?
I would look up the Axon 7 notification bell before you dive in any further but hopefully they will add an option to disable that at some point. Power button is fine IMO. It's below the volume keys so it's different from other phones I've had but its pretty solid feeling. I dont see any lag with the lockscreen but the double tap to wake sucks, if you like using that. As for the unlocking by accident, I would say the sensors don't always behave like you think you will, sort of weird. But overall it doesn't cause too many problems.
I don't even use the power button most of the time. Simply putting my finger on the fingerprint sensor as soon as I pick it up makes it power up the screen and unlock to the desktop immediately. Also I put "Screen Off" app on one of my Pie Control triggers so I can just slide in from the bezel with my thumb and lift from that quadrant to turn it off.

Youre not on 2017G right? Pie controls don't work on the US models (2017U), just like the on screen buttons.
I use a Nova Launcher gesture to turn the screen off. Double tap to turn off. Phone already has double tap to wake, but as mentioned earlier, most use the fingerprint sensor to unlock. Quick and effective.
Nova launcher gestures ftw. I've set double tap screen to sleep and the capacitive home key set up to turn off screen. Barely use the power key although it's pretty good and sturdy.
Thanks guys-I'm between this and the OnePlus 3 (had the OnePlus One and loved it)!

How to trigger proximity sensor with a signal instead of a real event?

I have used quite a lot of time pondering over how to wake up the phone using a timer instead of a real event like pressing the lock button or taking the phone out of your pocket using proximity sensor. I tried to use two apps, Automate and Tasker, to achieve this functionality, but for some reason neither of them managed to successfully wake the phone up although the event that was supposed to wake it up did trigger. Then I thought about how there are loads of apps that let you wake the phone by tapping the screen or shaking it, and came up with an idea to feed a signal with a timer that equals tapping the screen and use that to fool the app into waking the phone up.
Is this a possibility, or is there another, reliable way to wake the screen up using a timer?
Tap to wake won't work on the S4 since the screen is completely turned off, therefore it won't react to any touch events when the screen is off, like the new generation phones do.
Shake to wake may work.
