Transferring Icons from PC to Phone - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hi guys,
Firstly, apologies if this topic has been answered before, I wasn't able to find much on here. Anyway, I decided that I wanted to have desaturated versions of icons that I have on the phone and was able to extract them onto my PC and change them. The problem was getting them back on the phone, I tried a few methods that didn't seem to work and in the end had to resort to using APK Icon Editor to replace and pack the file without issue. Is there not a location folder on the phone that I can send icons to that will be picked up by launchers or is the method I used the only way?
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

You have to decompile it and re compile it sometimes it need to be signed with the same signature use tickle my android or if you want do it with this app I found in the play store

help needed.

hi guys...
once again i am in need of some help. for some silly reason i cannot seem to install any themes i downloaded from the internet. i downloaded one yesterday from a different site, and that worked fine. but i reset my phone due to some earlier hiccups, so i had to download the theme again. but this time it just will not show up on my 'today screen' all i get are the normal 3 default themes.
am i doing something wrong here?
17 views and not a single reply. thats disappointing. but i have faith in this site due to it being highly recommended. i'm hoping someone will have an answer to my dilemma.
What format are these files you are trying to use as themes?
Are they .tsk?
Also where are you placing them on the device?
all themes must be *.tsk
put them in the windows folder in your device
to access them:
start>settings>personal>today>appearance
choose a theme listed>press OK

How do I install updates and .cab files?

HI, I have just got the HD2 and have been on the HTC website and found a variety of updates for my phone. I follow these instructions:-
"This update for HTC HD2 allows for contacts stored on your SIM card to be properly displayed on your phone along with Phone and Exchange Server contacts.
Installation Instructions:
Note: This update is only for ROM versions less than or equal to 1.59.XXX.X.
Follow the instructions below to download and install the Update on your device:
Make sure you have Microsoft ActiveSync® installed on your Windows XP PC or Windows Mobile Device Center on your Windows Vista® PC. You can find Microsoft ActiveSync from this link or Windows Mobile Device Center from this link.
Connect and synchronize your device with your PC via Microsoft ActiveSync® or Windows Mobile Device Center using the USB cable.
To download the Update, first select the check box below. Next, select the Update and the desired FTP site then click Download.
To install the Update, tap the RUU.exe file on your PC and follow the on-screen instructions.
DOWNLOAD: To download this software, please follow the steps below:
1. Please select the file most suitable for your device:
--Please Select-- Update for HTC HD2 SIM Contacts
2. Please select a location closest to you:
--Please Select-- Europe 1 Europe 2 US Asia 1 Asia 2 "
I save the file to my PC, but when I try to run the file I get an error message saying that the .exe is not a valid Win32 application. Can anyone help? I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
Also, if I'm in the UK should I be selecting Europe 1 or Europe 2?
Finally, if I want to install .cab files to my phone where do I store the files and how do I open them?
Cheers
I can't say why the hotfix isn't working. You just run it from the PC and it works. Try downloading it again, in case it got corrupted during download.
As for cab files, I personally keep all my cab files so I can install them again after the next ROM update. I've got an "installers" folder on my storage card, with subfolders for different installer types (games, utils, htc fixes etc.) and I put them in there. You just run them directly on the phone by clicking them.
A word of advice - unless you REALLY want something installed on your phone, install it to the storage card. These babies run out of device space very quickly once you start installing stuff, and there's things out there that you don't have a choice about.
I only install things to the phone if the phone would function differently without it. eg. Theme modifications and essential utilities etc..
Hope you get the hotfix working. Most hotfixes run on the phone, so you won't normally have this issue. Oh yes, you should be selecting Europe for download location if you're in the UK. As far as I'm aware though, that's just the server location, so you pick the closest one. It won't affect what you download. That's determined by what region the site recognises you as.
Good luck
I've tried downloading it again but get the same error message. Should I be transfering the .exe file to the phone, and open it from the phone, or save it to the PC and open it on the PC? IF I should open it on the phone, where do I find the file once I've transfered it?
All the recent hotfixes, apart from the SIM contacts one, are local files that have to be run on the device.
Copy the file to the device then locate it using a file explorer. Simply press the file name with your finger to run it.

The one he's asking about is the SIM contacts one, so it should be run on the PC.
Sorry- misread the OPs thread!

Well to be honest the SIMS was just one example, you have helped me with the others so many thanks
Once I've installed the hotfixes can I delete the .exe files from my phone?
You can, but they are relatively small so would you gain much?
Store them on the Storage Card (you can run then from there as well) so if you ever have to do a factory reset, you'll still have the update files to apply.

Good thinking
At the risk of seeming like a complete idiot, I wonder if I could pick your brains for some help.
I joined your forums when I bought my HTC HD2 a few weeks ago, (I had been a Nokia man for the last 20 years) and have spent the time perusing your excellent forums for information whilst learning the telephone out of the box, and now I have decided to expand my knowledge a little and start installing some simple .cab files.
I have tripped at the first hurdle!
I thought I'd start with something simple like the 'torch'
I created a folder on my computer specifically for downloaded cab files, and created the same on my HD2, downloaded the RAR file, unzipped it to my computer folder, then grabbed it and set it into the folder on the phone.
All good.
Now, when I use 'file explorer' to find the file, I can open it ok and when I click 'setup', the screen goes white with nothing but a small black box in the bottom right corner with what looks like a usb outline and an arrow above it.
If i click that, it looks like it's trying to take me to a website!
Now bejayus and begorrah, I'm not a stupid person, but I am an old dog trying to learn new tricks, so if anyone can help in laymans 'idiot proof' terms what I am doing wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.
Fantastic forum by the way, even though most of the information passes clean over the top of my head!
Well just so any other noob is/was in the same predicament as myself, the answer as expected was very simple.
DO NOT unzip the RAR file containing the .cab file on your computer when you download it and then send the unzipped folder to your phone.
Go to the location to where Firefox (or whoever) downloaded it on your computer, then copy and paste the intact RAR zip file direct to your phone and open it there.
I knew the answer would be simple, but thankfully the kind people in another forum pointed me in the right direction.
I know it's blatantly obvious to many members here, in fact, you probably laughed at such a stupid question in the first place...... but please keep in mind that not all of us are computer geeks.
I'm a hairy arsed construction worker myself, and merely trying to keep up with modern technology.
And I do love trying!

Manual backup of certain data

Hi Everyone, as the title suggest this is about manually backing up your data from installed apps
Theres nothing complicated about it but it is a bit time consuming to start with, ive tried this on several programs, using the following process,
Back up the data,
Uninstalling the program,
Restart,
Install the program,
Running the program to confirm the previous data had gone,
Put the backup back in place,
Finally running the program again to confirm the old data was back.
first things first, you will need windows phone device manager
http://www.touchxperience.com/
now, use the file explorer and navigate to your "Applications\data folder
within here you will find everything you have installed listed as numbers and letters
the time consuming part is trying to work out what is what. The folder your looking for within each folder is called "IsolatedStore" that contains everything as far as i can see for that app
Simply transfer that folder to your PC,
To use it again, simply install the app, then copy the backup back overwriting whats there.
Cache and History dont seem to copy but ive not found an issue as yet with this
Ive not tried this after a full reset
Ive not looked for a way of doing this with SMS messages, i doubt it will be in the same location but its possible i suppose if you can find it
anyhow, I might just give NoDo a try now that i can "backup" my important data
was also thinking that perhaps this could be intigrated in to windows phone device manager, ive tried installing and removing an app several times and its always used the same folder name, i dont know if this is the case across devices, but if it is, potentially a database could be used... just a thought
OR!
just wait for the new version of windows phone device manager
which ive just been told will contain a back up utility!
i think it will hit beta users soon-ish
backing up sms etc seems to be a big obstacle to people using WP7 full time.
Hope this is included.

yeah that is a pain, ive been searching all damn night to see if i can find where they are but so far nothing, im guessing its within some protected area or within one of the DB files which cant be copied off.
wheres the pst files when you need them, MS have always managed to hide them in odd places
anyhow, perhaps im missing something, if not, then maybe sms backup will not be apart of his program because im buggered if i can find the things!.
SMS backup
Sorry to bump this thread but I thought I would add a link to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16490860&postcount=29 where you can backup SMS.
Just for completeness!

post the fonts let me take a look.
Thanks The actual characters I am after are at: 10d0-10fb. I've playing with this for a while. Actually what I did, was copy the sylfaen.ttf into one of the first WP7 images for HD2, tweaked some registry and recoocked the ROM. But this did not work. After several failures I quit trying hoping that MS would eventually add Georgian letter support to OS. But with all this new updates, support for Georgian letter is still missing. So, if you could help I and probably all the Georgian language community would appreciate your help.
Its gona be a bit of a hastle I think! with not much of a change altho its worth looking in to because I would'nt mind useing some other fonts on my system.
You can view the fonts on your phone useing touchexperiance
On your pc just open touchexperiance and open the file browser
Next go down the the section of files that start with S and you will see 9 fonts
segoeui.ttf
segoeuib.ttf
SegoWP.ttf
SegoWP-Black.ttf
SegoWP-Bold.ttf
SegoWP-Light.ttf
SegoWP-Semibold.ttf
SegoWP-Semilight.ttf
seguisym.tff
Im gessing replaceing the one's that says segoeui.ttf & segoeuib.ttf would be a good one's to try with.
Anyway im not sure what font is used buy the system or where you could change teh directory posibbly in shell Not sure?
The fonts might be overrideable or unmoveable not sure?
Some of the fonta are defenetly made strickly for windows phone 7
But you might beable to rename your font and usse it as a system font but agin not sure?
This might requre a custom update or a cooked in rom to use not sure!
The file you sent me was alredy instaled on my PC.
The fonts are digitaly sined by microsoft so im not sure if useing a diffrent one would break the system updates or if its even posible to modify without bulding a custom rom
In all honisty in order to do it and make it look right you would need 9 new versions of sylfaen.ttf
If I end up cooking my owen rom I will defenetly be trying to use custom fonts
but for now I have other projects im trying to finnish
If you want to look in to any of the things I mentioned & report back to let us know that would be good keep at it im sure you will figure it out if you dotn let us know whare you are stuck!
I know thats dose'nt help much but maby you have an idia about ware to start depending how bad you want them.
Puting together a nice pack of 9 fonts all the same that match orignals wouldbe a good start.
We could probly put together a nice quality custom update with that.
Well goodluck!
The fonts are placed into windows directory (by default) you can actually change the location of the fonts from the registry. If interested I can send you the extract from the WPk7 registry file, where the fonts and font linking is done. As mentioned I have coocked my own ROM with sylfaen in windows directory and changed some settings in the registry. It seems that copying the font only doesnot solve the problem, there is the registry key where you have to add the your font to. It is quite interesting, because all the fonts seem to link to SegoWP. The problem is that the range for Georgian fonts is actually present in all the fonts that a factory present in WP7. The only problem is that that range is empty. Thus, when viewing Georgian pages you recive blank squares instead of charachters. With my own cocked ROM with sylfaen.ttf in it, I recieved quite strange results, MS Word would display Georgian text perfectly, Outlook would not. The strangest happened to IE when viewing georgian pages... The page would start blinking?!? Very strange. At this point I quite playing arround with this prodject, as I got to the max I could do I was thinking of using the xap install/update method that Da_G provided, but it is too techy for me.
Thanks anyway.
