Flash marshmallow ROM while on Oreo bootloader - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This may be a dumb question, but can I flash a marshmallow ROM and keep the Oreo bootloader? Or do I absolutely need to flash a 6.0 bootloader?
I know I was able to flash a nougat rom and keep the Oreo bootloader, but I'm not sure if it makes a difference with a 6.0 ROM.

Can I safely flash back to stock Marshmallow?

My Moto G4 came with Marshmallow installed and I performed an OTA update to Nougat. I then unlocked my bootloader and flashed some custom Nougat ROMs (7.1.2, so newer than the newest official available version). Now I want to get back to stock Nougat so I can relock the bootloader and all that jazz.
As far as I can tell, only Marshmallow firmware images are available so can I safely flash that (I'm thinking "ATHENE_MPJ24.139-23.4_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.zip") and then OTA to Nougat from there or will that cause problems because I already (presumably) have the Nougat bootloader version? I don't want to brick my phone!
Note I'm using a retail United Kingdom XT1622 Moto G4.
Cheers all in advance,
treela
Ah ha! Found this:

Got back to stock Marshmallow all OK
flashing back to marshmallow and being able to relock the bootloader after doing the ota wont really work. best bet is to try and find the stock nougat image and flash it.

From Nougat to MM for recovery

I have Custom ROM stock nougat
Can I install only the MM bootloader, do full wipe, and install a custom MM ROM, just for recovery?
Downgrade for recovery?
I'm confused about what you want to achieve, are you asking if you can downgrade to stock marshmallow from stock Nougat, to flash a custom marshmallow ROM?
If so, you could downgrade, but I would strongly recommend not using OTA updates on the stock marshmallow ROM if you downgrade, else you may hard brick your device. In most cases, you can't downgrade the bootloader in fastboot.
I'm not sure what you are asking for about recovery, can you elaborate?

You can even stay on nougat firmware, there's no need to downgrade as nougat is official released and available for all countries

Bootloader and modem question

How do I know which bootloader do I have? I'm currently running build B35.
Can someone direct me to a thread how to flash universal bootloader and modem?
If I use bkores flash toolkit, it said you have to flash universal bootloader, modem along with Rom and Gapps but in which order?
If using twrp for future flash do I need to flash universal bootloader and modem every time I switch ROM?
I'm not an expert but here's what I understand.
1. You don't have to worry which version you have unless you're flashing a custom ROM, usually for Nougat you want the B15 and for Oreo you want the B35.
2.Universal Bootloader>Modem>ROM>GApps>Magisk/SuperSU
3.You only need to flash it once if you're switching ROMs with the same android version.

If you haven't you need to unlock your bootloader before you can start flashing custom ROM. You can find a guide on how to do it here.

Downgrade to 5.1 lollipop

If i use twrp to flash device back from nougat to lollipop (stock), will be any chance in a future to install original updates (OTA?)
No!
How to do it? I have official Nougat. I've unlocked bootloader and installed twrp.
I've tried twrp, but can not find debloated flash rom. Some of guys are making downgrade with fastboot over youtube, but they downgrade back only previous version of android, for example from nougat to marshmallow, or from marchmallow to lollipop.

What will happen, if i try with fastboot way? Will I brick the phone?
