Mi A1 or Moto Z Play - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

hello, and sorry if i should not post this here.
as you can see in the title, i am not sure which one i should choose.
to give some context,
i can find both used (moto z play for around 8-9 months, A1 less than a month),
both in perfect condition,
both dressed (A1 in good case, mzp in official incipio bumper),
both at 220 euros (though hopefully i can find the A1 cheaper later)
the pros, that matter to me,
A1:
more ram
2 more years of updates so hopefully two more android versions
lcd, i feel a bit uneasy about the whole amoled burn in
mzp:
bigger battery
lenovo seems to take care of the z line so a slight chance of being supported a bit longer than the usual 2 years
its build quality (and pricetag) is higher and uses better "minor" hardware (mics, speakers, etc)
i lean towards mzp and i need a phone in the next 2-3 weeks max (so ordering A1 for cheaper from china is a no-no). plz help me to choose :silly:

You will only lose the Android P Update which the mi a1 will get but over all Z Play is way better than the Mi A1.

thank you, i got the z play
how i can lock the thread?

In Depth Comparison Xiaomi Mi 2 & Mi 2S

First of all, English is not my mother tongue, so I will ask for some leeway.
I have tested the new (well, newest if not new) the Mi 2S (about 1 month) while still having the Mi 2. I wanted to get back to the community in case some were wondering if it was worth a new purchase.
In case, people would ask as to where I bought the phone, I prefer to clear this point at once. My brother in law wanted to buy a Mi 2A for his wife but he only speaks French, so he tried to contact some websites and one held his attention due to some fast replies : www.phonasia.com
I wasn't confident at first knowing some websites where a trust relationship were already built.
Well, since they were using Paypal as a way to pay and he could finalize his payment via phone (they got a French and a UK number) and he got a good price, so...
I had my Mi 2S in his cart and I got it in about 10 days (in Paris, France). Everything went well at the end. For people who would want to buy through this website, I would gladly give my brother in law's email for sponsorship.
Anyway, now this is out of the way, I can begin my In Depth Comparison between the 2 smartphones.
The 2 devices : Xiaomi Mi 2S 32 GB (available since this Spring) and Xiaomi Mi 2 32 GB (available since December 2012).
At first glance, we could say that Xiaomi only changed the SoC (System On Chip), we got the S4 Pro then the S600. Secondly, the Camera got upgraded too, from 8MP to 13 MP (only on the 32 GB version though).
Well, it's not entirely true. Let's go see that.
1) What didn't change
The design of the phone, the vibrator and... that's all. Some photos of the exterior aspect of the two mobiles (we just can't tell the difference) taken from my Canon EOS 350 (a few years old Reflex).
The Mi 2S is on the left here.
More photos here : Dropbox at the bottom of the folder.
2) The Screen
We can't see it cleary on the photos but the difference is quite clear on the naked eye. The Mi 2S' screen is brighter but it's as if it was 2 totally different screens, it's still globally the same screen quality speaking but the difference is there.
Here is the whole screen on screen comparison : Dropbox
The Mi 2S is on the left and the Mi 2 is on the right.
Here is some shots that I selected where I think it would show the difference at its best.
I think the last one with the xda website is the clearer. When you zoom we can see the difference of levels about the white color.
3) Loudspeaker
I don't have yet any device that can measure the sound level (decibels) but it's very easy to tell which one is has the better loudspeaker.
I played a couple of songs while syncing them on both devices and we could clearly hear louder the the Mi 2S.
The downside is that I don't a very good ear, so I couldn't tell which displayed the better sound quality wise.
4) GPS
This is the main change to me. The old Mi 2 (and I tested 3 different ones (my brother in law's, my mother's and mine) had a crappy GPS to say the least. Sometimes it took several minutes, like FIVE which is eternity when you need it. I installed GPS Status, GPS fix but it only worked at first and only sometimes. It wasn't reliable. You can also find some of my posts in the miuiandroid forum in the dedicated topic named "GPS issues" (I think or something like this).
With the Mi 2S, it was like a entire different world, it was like Disney Land. The GPS fixes very quicky like any other smartphone on the market since 2009 - 2010 (my first Android phone was the Motorola Milestone, late 2009 and I never had any GPS issue). Google Maps got a fix and was guiding me within 10 secs. It is really is amazing comparing to what I had before.
5) Benchmarks
Well, I noticed a differential about 10 to 20% in favor of the Mi 2S depending on the used Benchmark. The Mi 2 is displayed on the left and the Mi 2S on the right.
First one : Quadrant Standard
I immediately ruled out that one because of the too great differential which is about 40%. Anyway, here are the results.
Epic Citadel : the difference was nonexistent. I think we got the same results because the GPU is strictly the same, the Adreno 320.
Vellamo : 10 to 20 % better in favor of the Mi 2S.
Vellamo also tests the precision and the latency of the Touchscreen. Let's see the results.
HTML5 test (no idea about the settings despite of the fact that is set on custom)
Next Bench is 3DMark Basic (Mi 2 is above and Mi 2S is below.
Now let's switch 3DMark to Extreme, there is difference of 5%.
Last Bench... Antutu !
The full results (some more details) are available here : Dropbox
6) Battery Life
Well, after 1 month of use, I really can't tell if the battery life is better or not. It seems to be, but it's very hard to tell on the day to day basis since it could seems better because I wanted to believe that and it depends a lot of the usage which is not linear for me. Some days, I would have plenty of work by mid day, the battery would be quite drained and for good reason. Others days, like my days off, I'm hardly touching my phone, and I would have plenty of remaning battery life (about 60%+) to last a second day.
But, I noticed the effect of the new SoC, the S600, the smartphone is not so keen to overheat as the Mi 2 while I'm using it not even intensively but, let's say moderately (emails + Chrome with 10 tabs + Tapatalk + looking at pictures). The Mi 2 isn't overheating but it is warm, at least warm enough to feel it (not hot, not at all, but warm).
7) Photos
Let's turn our interest on the Cameras performance.
Mi 2's shots on the left and Mi 2S on the right. First round of photos in normal mode, second one with HDR. I took the first photos indoor.
(the first shot wasn't set on 8 MP)
The colors taken by the Mi 2S are closer to real life colors. Details wise, I can't really tell the difference yet. The HDR mode on the Mi 2 seems to over saturate the colors a bit.
Anyway, what about outdoors, right ? The shots were taken during a cloudy day, so the lights weren't ideal.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-...0cZzCqQ/s720/IMG_20130610_155745_HDR.jpg[/img
I noticed 2 things :
- the Mi 2S did a better job while lights weren't ideal
- again, oversaturation in HDR mode by the Mi 2. But, overall, in both devices, the HDR made quite a good job. Just look at the sky, we can clearly see the clouds and the sky while in normal mode, everything is "greyish".
2nd day outdoor, cloudy again (it's Paris, what do you expect ?)
These shots were taken with a larger range of colors than before. In normal mode, I can hardly tell that the new camera is an improvement, to me it's quite similar. Maybe someone with more photo experience can tell us more stuff about that.
The downside is that I'm not a photographer and I didn't respect some strict rule while taking photos.
Still, I think the Mi 2S did a better job with the Tree shots.
Let's en this photo shoot by test the cameras in very low lights environment :
The flash is clearly better on the Mi 2S.
The entire photoshoot is available there : Mi 2 Photos and Mi 2S Photos
Some people might draw way better observations than I did.
To conclude this long post :
What didn't change => the global design.
Otherwise, every piece of hardware changed : screen, GPS (!!!), loudspeaker, SoC, Camera and flash.
Overall, the user experience has been quite the same, the Mi 2 is really speedy enough to perform as well as the Mi 2S. But the GPS is a real big improvement to me because I really need it. The other notable advantage, I really felt like the phone isn't getting that warm, at least not as quickly as the Mi 2.
To me, if you got the Mi 2, it's not worth upgrading the Mi 2S unless you're an ultra geek (which I am) and you need the latest stuff out there.
Now, I guess it's time to say good bye and I want to thanks my mom and dad, my family, my friends for supporting me everyday... wait, wait, I think I'm writing, somehow the wrong speech here. I just want to thank you for reading my long post and I hope some of you would have found this one useful enough in their future purchased.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me here or via PM.
Very thanks for your great comparison/review! i just bought a mi2s, and i want to know how it's the network behaviour overall on this phone? Because one of the reasons to change from my Razr I, it's because i'm having a lot of data drops on HSDPA.... Thanks!
I live in Paris (France), and here, we've got 4 different carriers.
I'm using the one that suits me because I got great coverage at work and home. I can't really tell as to the strenght of the Mi 2S' antenna since my network with my carrier is great regardless the phone.
On the other hand, I have poor coverage with the others carriers, once again, regardless of the used phone.
All I can say is that once you are covered by your carirer and it is well done, then you have next to 0 problem (no data drops on DC HSDPA of stuff like that).

Mi 5s vs Mi 5

So I was really considering on buying the 5s but now thinking is it really worth it?
They are boasting about the camera but they removed OIS! IR blaster though that's not a deal breaker. Guess camera is the highlight really
Here's a decent video https://youtu.be/ffO30N8OxtM
I'm actually contemplating about the same choice. I almost bought Mi 5 Prime with 3GB RAM, but was a bit hesitant because of the following things:
Mi 5 is one of the easiest bend-breakable phones so you need some sturdy case to mitigate bend break problem
(un)availability of custom ROMs as I don't think I'd like running MIUI on the long run. I would rather put some as vanilla as possible OS on it
Ordering from China is a bit risky
But in the meantime Mi 5S came out and I really like that it has aluminium back and upgraded processor although I'm not sure whether there's significant performance difference between the two. But if I do buy myself Mi 5S, I'll likely have to wait for a longer time before I'll be able to get some vanilla Android on it. Pixel is just too crazy expensive.
I guess I'll wait a bit until we get some feedback from the community to see how well this device is built and performs.
Just my 2 cents:
1) OIS on the Mi5s is not available for the sensor atm, might be, "might be" due to its large sensor. (As Google Pixel phones do not have OIS as well)
-On the bright side, the DIS works like a charm :3
2) If you want to get yourself "Daydream VR ready", do get the Mi5s as the Snapdragon 821 supports it~ (even though the performance increase is not skyrocket high)
3) After watching several videos from Youtube about Mi5 and Mi5s, camera performance is in fact increased for the Mi5s.
-However, low light scenario based pictures and videos would have varying results I suppose.
-Since it uses the same sensor as Google Pixel but not as great as Google Pixel's camera quality, future updates "might" be able to increase the Mi5s camera performance. (Or maybe even custom ROMs).
4) From what I heard on chinese Mi5s reviews/hands on, the ultrasonic fingerprint reader's performance may vary. Might be due to its 'newborn' nature (it is a new tech, so optimisation might not be optimal).
5) Like what literadesign mentioned, the Mi5 surely is a "bendable" phone. I assume that Mi5s alloy body would have make it less bendable. (Hard to say, do not just buy it to try its bendable level lel)
In the end, it is all about your choice~
Damn, didn't know the mi5 bends easy. The mi5 with 4way axis is a joke, seen some vids
What other alternatives are the part from op3? Mayne Zuk z2 pro

[Q] Is it worth upgrade from Oneplus One to A1?

Hi, I have been using my OPO for almost 3 years now. And currently I am looking forward to switch to other device. My OPO really served me well, but seeing all this type C, dual camera gimmick makes my OPO looks old and not to mention the battery is aging. So I need some opinion from you guys. Is there any severe issue (or manufacturing issue) with this phone?
to me type c, dual camera gimmick isn't worth the upgrade. Also mi a1 does have its limitations like no nfc, mid range cpu and surprisingly no direct boot support. Prices in India does prove mi a1 a good choice given its expected to receive updates upto android P. If I haven't messed up my nexus 4 touchscreen (also no lte ) i would have waited for oreo based devices.
Given one plus one custom rom support i would recommend to wait for some time.
I'm coming from a Oneplus 3 and i'm going to switch to the Xiaomi mi a1. Or u wait a bit and buy this one: http://www.gizchina.com/2017/10/19/xiaomi-redmi-note-5-redmi-5-plus-might-hit-markets-november-11/

OPO3 to A1 is definitely a downgrade thou. Because now OP5 is pretty much at premium price which I can't afford anymore so I am looking at the A1. But after some quick searches, there is some problem with the display and headphone jack hissing problem right?
the hissing problem isnt tht bad mate you only hear when the sound stops for a second but the multitouch sensitivity is the worst issue for me

It depends on what screen u have as there are 2 different panels used. For the headphone problem, IDK
I have no hissing problem and the touch screen issues are only mild
I was in the same boat few days back. And I made the switch from Oneplus one to Mi A1. I would say I'm pretty happy with my decision. OPO battery was dying and I was tried to manually flashing updates every now and then. Mi A1 is working as it should and I am satisfied with it. Portrait mode in day light is a big plus and a reason to get A1.

Honestly, I don't get any display issues. Probably because I don't play games which requires multitouch.
About hissing sound, I don't get it on apple earphones.
With boAt 225 bassheads I get it but only when I get a notification while listening to music, not otherwise. So it's not a deal breaker for me.
Also switched from OPO and it is totally worth it!
It is better in any way. Screen, camera, battery life, sound quality and responsiveness.
I didn't realize how much the OPO was struggling to run Nougat until now.
I switched last week from 1+1(LineageOS) to A1. It seems as fast as 1+1 on daily use. Battery is awesome. Camera is pretty much the same, i'm not sure which is better. And finally all small bugs from lineageos are gone.

xiaomi a2 vs lg g6

Hello I am planning to get a phone today around 200$ both mi a2 and lg G6 is under 200$ in my country.. which one should I get ?? I will use it mostly to watch YouTube, browsing and some lite GPS usage ..
I believe G6's camera is far superior. Plus I've come to much appreciate the wide angle camera on the same device. If camera matters to you go for G6. I also think sooner or later, LG will provide update to Android P, too
well, considering Mi A2 didnt have headphone jack, the camera is worse than G6, have less features, have Android One (wich personaly i didnt like, is boring) i think if you find G6 at same price or less, then you should go for G6 without thinkin...G6 at 200 is a damn of a deal. specialy with SD821, QHD display, great cameras, manual camera etc etc...i dont need to say anymore, i own it and is amazing you will like it better than Mi A2 for sure, i already play with A2 and is really a boring and the screen to body ratio is bigger in G6, A2 have too much bezels.
Worse Camera? One has to wonder what criteria one is using...
The Mi A2 is getting fantastic reviews for it's advances in camera ability. It has pixel binning and a wide aperture on *both* rear lenses, which make for more light getting through to the sensor, which makes for better pictures in low light. It has portrait mode on both the rear and front cameras, but it's main feature is ability in low light.
I have a G6, like it. But have a Mi A2 arriving soon. The G6, unless you get one of the few versions that are unlockable, will not get updates in a timely manner or fairly soon, never.
The A2 on the other hand is just released, 2 yrs of promised OS updates, and 3 yrs of security updates (my G6 is on May security - the August security is already available for the A2).
The A2 is project treble enabled and unlockable (no questions asked, no code needed). And while some find Android One "boring", others of us find it fantastic; I'm a minimalist, I want to get the most out of the hardware as possible; that means running as little bloatware as I can.
Don't get me wrong, I like the G6. And will decide after some time which one I sell. But the Mi A2 is being hailed as a great phone for the price range.
Much depends on what your needs are of course. I prefer the aluminum unibody phones, with the 2.5D glass, they are more 'rounded' and easier to hold. And cameras with good low light are a very big plus... Where are most of the pics you take with your phone? Indoors with friends, maybe at night, that type of a thing. I don't walk around during daylight looking to take pictures with my phone, for that I have a sony mirroless camera with a lot of interchangeable lenses.
The G6 is a higher tier phone. Much smaller yet with bigger screen, better display, better camera, faster, always on display. And if we are talking about the dual sim version, then there's also the quad DAC, for someone who wants to listen to music from a mobile device in the best possible quality.
Mi A1 is a great phone, I like it, but I don't think that it's a match for the G6. I like the Android One thing, but it was made with cost being one of the first priorities, G6 wasn't that much.

My mistake, but things are even worse for the A2. Much bigger, no card slot, no FM radio (for someone who needs it),
A2 is the phone to get if the only priority is the pure Android and the updates.

$200 is a bargain for the LG.
Go for it, although you have to be aware that you are buying a model that is almost a year and a half old and therefore towards the end of support by LG
This doesn't take away from the enjoyment that you get from the phone, but you have to adjust your expectations.
As you can see from these forums there are many people "kvetching" (whining) about the delay or lack of updates.
For most people this isn't important but you have to decide for yourself.

Sure, this doesnt mean if the support ends for G6 the phone will be trash, it doesnt mean that...i dont why people bother so much for updates since you always waste time searching for it and then dont enjoy the true value of the phone, simple because you are obcessed with updates...
For the price you pay for G6 is a true value phone, you know what a high end looks like, even tho is from last year but high end will be high end forever because of the looks of it, and a midrange with stock will always be mid range with stock android.
And...i know for almost sure, G6 will have Android Pie next year, of course A2 will have it sooner or already have it (IDK) but for G6 is a must welcome update, SD821 with Pie will last at least for more one year or so, like you can go out with your phone until ends of 2019 or more.
Thats what im gonna to do with my G6, wait for Pie and use it for more 1 or 2 years...as for Mi A2 from today until 2 years will keep receiving updates but i dont see your Mi A2 last more than 2 years, Xiaomi always make new models and maybe Mi A2 will be out of updates sooner than people will expect.
I am not convincing anyone to buy this or that phone, they have the pros and cons like every phone, but the weight here is more to the G6 than to Mi A2.
G6 Pros vs Mi A2:
- Better camera
- Wide Angle camera
- Better video camera
- Headphone jack
- Look like a flagship
- Better screen to body ratio
- Better outdoor visibility
- Better SoC
- A little more battery
- IP68 Water and Dust resistant
Mi A2 Pros vs G6:
- IR Blaster
- Stock Android
- Thinner than G6
- Better loudspeaker quality
... i have G6, but i already put my hands on A2, bezels is too much and the top bezel makes the phone ugly, too light weight like you holding a paper not a phone, screen is nothing special, stock android (at least for me) didnt have taste, is like a salted water biccuit. But people chose what they gonna want, i only give my feedback upon my experience in both.
I too am very happy with my G6.
The only open question at this point is reliability, given the bootloop problem that many LG manufactured phones have had.
Both my sons had Nexus 5x's and both died from bootloops within 2 years.
Hopefully the G6 won't suffer the same fate.

LG after beign sued because bootloops i think they already fix it since G5/V20 all phones since those is no more bootloop aware and if they do is people fault of flashing wrong things and do what they dont know what they doing, and even that way the bootloop by accident is easy fixed with Uppercut or LG UP.
LG fame of bootloops keep going i know but LG phones dont bootloop anymore i can guarantee you.
Yes, that's what I read too, but it had definitely hurt LG's reputation and their competition with Samsung (even with the exploding Galaxy s7 LOL)
Hopefully I will retire it when the Lg G7 becomes a bargain!

I just bought A2 and sold the G6 after 1,5 year. If you are not a fashion phone user choose the A2 and be advanced user
I've had both phones, both are good, but you have to ask; What's most important for you? I like the G6 better because of the size. Ideally I'd have a Pixel 3, but not until the price comes down for me. I like the wide angle lens' on the G6 also. There are so many factors re phones, unlockable, roms, development, updates, etc etc.
what matters to you? that's the tough question.

I need change my nubia z11 mini s, the volume of calls is unusable is so low, never was good at all. I have found an offer about 200 euros is like new on amazon, i was looking to get redmi note 7pro, xiaomi 8 or meizu 16 I love meizu design and camera looks pretty nice but lacks of support and scene. Maybe in a future I will buy nokia 9 pureview.
I am not sure about to do, I had a desire and keeping good memories. But it just have one camera, could i have bouquet efect pictures? The frames really doesn't like me but and size. I am looking as well a good mic for calls, before the z11 I had a sony z3c and as well fails on mic calls was horrible in the end of phone live.
The phone is still worth it? Seems that doesn't have too may scene and rooms. In Spain this brand is dead literally really few people have it.
Do still buy it nowdays?
Thank you
Edit: I can buy brand new mi8 about 300 euros, mi mix 2s 290 euros or htc u11 like new on amazon about 200 euros. Which do you prefer?
If you don't mind missing regular updates, buy u11.

I agree.
U11 has really a great camera, that can not be compared with other mobiles mentioned.
Also system is really fluid and user experience is very polished.
Last year from U11 I went for Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S: i kept it about a month then got a U12+

just yesterday I sold an oneplus 6 to go back to the htc u11: it's a fabulous phone, nice touch & feel, fantastic camera, nice display, fantastic size, superlative videos with super 3D audio, fingerprint reader very fast to unlock it.
Even today I think the htc u11 is a fantastic phone that can compete with all the other top on the market, even in 2018-2019.
It has only one defect: the updates.
If it's not a problem for you, you can not spend your money better.
And then you also have Amazon's guarantee!
On what Amazon did you find it for 200 euros?
Forgive my English: I use Google translator.
I got HTC U11 for about 250 USD around a month back. It is a great phone. I bought it keeping it as a backup phone and using Note 8 as a main phone but it happened vice versa.
Absolutely recommend even in 2 years from now you won't regret it !

Suggest to go for U11, the main problem is hard to get new software and probably no official Pie to taste. I've got U11 and RedMi 5 Plus and my friend just got a Mi 8 Lite yesterday.
The camera is superb on U11 and Mi 8 Lite(the same camera with Mi8 without OIS and aperture down to f1.9 from f1.8) is far away from U11. I've also got a Sony Z5 Compact and the photo/video quality on Mi 8 Lite is only about the same to Z5c in reality with faster dual pixel focus, never fully believe reviews on net, some are paid. I guess the Mi 8 does better but won't come close to U11 in real life usage.
If you are looking for RedMi note 7 pro, the good is 4000mah battery with sd675 u will receive least 50% more battery life over U11 with downgraded cpu and camera.
Nokia 9 is good only for taking photo with a crazy 12.4 stops dynamic range but photo lacking of details and the video quality comes out from Nokia 9 is bad too.

HTC said U11 Pie is still working on so I think we will receive latest security patches later.
U11 all the way. Its way underappreciated phone. Excellent screen, speakers. Superb camera with/without gcam port. Good battery life. Has custom ROM development as well with unlockable bootloader. Its the last issue-free phone from HTC.

Still a good phone

I need change my nubia z11 mini s, the volume of calls is unusable is so low, never was good at all. I have found an offer about 200 euros is like new on amazon, i was looking to get redmi note 7pro, xiaomi 8 or meizu 16 I love meizu design and camera looks pretty nice but lacks of support and scene. Maybe in a future I will buy nokia 9 pureview.
The phone is still worth it? Seems that doesn't have too may scene and rooms. In Spain this brand is dead literally really few people have it. Do still buy it nowdays?
Hi,
I bought one last week, loving it so far. I came from a Samsung S7 and there are almost identical apart from nice large screen on U11 and better front camera.
It has a nice UI, ROMS on here are good. Battery life good.
I got one on EBay for 185 Euros in perfect condition.

I would recommend it, if you can purchase it at a decent price, and if you are comfortable installing LineageOS. The combination of the U11 hardware, the LineageOS software, and the Google Camera app make this phone still, to this day, one of the smoothest phones that can take great pictures.
I have owned it for 2 years and plan on holding onto it for another year, or until there is significant improvement in the Google Pixel line.
In my case the camera especially when you use stock camera app. isn't good. Too much noise, but if you use Google camera mod it changes everything. Battery backup is decent, even when my device is 2 years old now.
