Hi guys,
So I have Google camera installed and works smooth while taking pictures compare to the stock camera.
But I have a question here in the comparison of both.
Attached is the comparison collage for same shot on stock camera and Google camera. In the Google camera, for the sky, it creates the color using dots which are clearly visible when I zoom in. And it is something which is bothering me.
Can anyone here tell me, if I am using some wrong settings or it is there in every setting?
I have the dots also, didn't find what's causing them, but version 5.0.009 gives me much less dots, so try to find that version and see if it helps.

same problem here, did you find a solution?
I have tried several different Gcam versions, types and configurations and all of them had this behavior with HDR engine activated. Gcam might need additional fix for our phone :-\
here is my comparison video

Nope, still the same problem. It's extremely easy to replicate, just take HDR photo of Kinder surprise yellow egg (or anything similar). It will show dotted pattern no matter what. The same pattern is visible on light uniform color (sky, wall,..).
_mysiak_: i try it now and i have same problem :/ ...but i must zoom in this photo, otherwise I can not see dots

I see it too. I switched back to MGC_5.1.018_7.0+c2API_Min_2a_AllInOne (December 12) and it does'nt appear to have this problem. I was on 3a and it had this problem. I'm using the Pixel setting (Marlin + Taimen) as device, with Pixel auto HDR+ and ZSL enabled.

Just tried it and even this version failed my yellow test, pattern still visible.
Edit: 5.1.018 versions crash on my phone here and there, so I'm back to "stable" MGC_5.1.014_7.0H_C2API_v.1.5g_AllinOne

Try these settings and app version from a photographer using our phone.
Just tried the photographer config and I can still see the dotted pattern.
My hope is that Xiaomi can upgrade the camera with android O update next week (and add image stabilization)

You are right, pattern is not visible, but also output of HDR+ isn't so good :\ I would even say that's it's pretty much on the same level as stock camera app.
I have tried almost all versions and settings combinations and it seems that we either have amazing HDR mode with strange pattern or HDR with low details and no mysterious pattern.
Try 3.5 BSG version. I've tried the AllinOne_Full_Manual 3.5 version and it doesn't appear to have the blocks. Using the same test subject, and I noticed that all versions from current all the way back to 1.2 have this flaw. I am working my way up on the versions, got to 3.7 and 4.0 but I can't get HDR to actually process.

I did try gcam... it starts but potrait mode crashes... hdr+ might work fine... i never clicked a pic, cz i am not very image friendly! however, the mode can be switched on..
I installed linage 15.1, 64 bit, android 8.1 and tried nearly all cameras but all camera are crashing.
I think it's due to the ROMs not supporting stock camera app. So no portrait mode for us!

I tried several ports. While the mode can be switched on, taking a photo doesn't process HDR+ and the outcome of the image is either green (Every second picture taken is green) or is a normal SDR picture.

I've tried both AICP and Pixel and couldn't get working portrait mode..
Using 32bits ROM will NEVER make us possible to use portrait mode. On other chance, using 64bits Rom there is a CHANCE it'll work in the future.

I'm going back to InvictaOS. Oreos ROM aren't optimized yet. Give it a month
Just for information:
The portrait mode is just a software feature that makes the background blurry. So take a picture and use any photo editor out there and make a mask with blurry background for example. Or use photo apps that can make this.
Phones without telephoto lens or without an big sensor won't be capable of making this without software tricks. And even then you need some distance between the object and background to get blurry background. That's called a low depth of field.
Anyone got it working?

...Look at the previous replies holy crap.
have patience! remember we still have only stock nougat so oreo ROMs are going to be buggy... 64 bit ROMs will go better... and will be useful ones they are stable.. i did notice that they are more fluid than others...but that's just my observation or my way to use it.
There will be more things that you might come across...ones things are good
You can also use normal Gcam with lens blur feature... it does the same thing and is very stable. The portrait mode was in pixel given the fact its camera has wide aperture and hence the portrait mode is effect is created. hence its price!

if you really want to take good pictures! use Invicta OS hal3 version and the stock moto camera app.. it does great job!
@Arnova8G2 using GCam5.1.018-Arnova8G2-V1.6,

Ohh!! its the new one! Haven't tried that yet! Will try it and report!
Hello,
this thread is actually nothing special, I've just found some settings to get good results out of these Gcam apks and I'd like to share them here.
This is tested on the latest Stock Pie (10.0.2.0) and it works on my device.
So, first of all you have to enable Camera2API obviously (https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2/how-to/how-to-enabling-cam2-gcam-android-t3868766), but I think you're all familiar with that at this point.
Download one of these apks: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-bsg/
(I'm on the latest one) or if you prefer an Arnova version based on MGC by BSG (No PixelMod).
After that go into settings->BSG MOD settings.
Input Model: Set "Interface Style" to "Pixel II" (there are some focus issues with Pixel III), "Back Camera" to "Pixel 3 XL", "Front Camera" to "Nexus 6P" and "Config" to "Pixel2018 ZslR Hdr+"
FIX: Set "RAW Format" to "RAW10(default)" (this should already be set), "Image Format" to "YUV_420_888 (default)" and enable "Enable Motion" if you're into motion photos.
After that close the app, clear its cache and start it again.
If you experience some FC, try to clear again the cache and restart the app.
Now you should get a fairly stable Gcam with good performance, at least this is the best I've tried so far.
Portrait mode, HDR+, HDR enhanced and HDR OFF all work, burst photos work, Motion photos work, Night mode work, front camera works, panoramic works.
The only broken thing is Slow Motion.
The Camera will crash if you try to take a picture with Flash and HDR+ on OFF, but to me it's not a big deal since I never turn it off unless I want to take a burst. Anyway if you set "Pixel2018 Zsl Hdr+" in "Config" you should get this to work as well, but you'll lose Motion Photos. it's up to you here.
So that's it, if you find any better Setting, please share it
Sorry for maybe hijacking the post but i was using a gcam for nokia 7 plus which has the same 660 chip found here https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-backrider/ . I found it to be really stable too except 4k which doesnt work.

No hijack, don't worry!
I'm trying it and it works mostly fine, but it looks like it FC a bit more often than the BSG version (maybe it's just an impression of mine).
Anyway the main think I dislike about the non-BSG versions is that you can't select "Pixel II" as the interface and you lose tap to focus, which makes the app completely unusable to me.

I was wondering, If I install a custom ROM such as Lineage how do I take pictures from the third camera? That one with a wider lens behind the phone.
As you can see in the image attached, that is what I mean. I tried to find apps in the playstore but none of them offers me the option to use this wide angle camera.
This is still my first matter before moving to a new ROM.
Thanks.

Alright it turns out to be a software problem, the third camera is only accessible through the stock ROM with the stock camera.
I tried using Open Camera which recognizes three cameras but it doesn't take pics from the third one. I will wait for the OneUI 2 update from Samsung to see whether it'll be solved or not.

I've solved the riddle.
If you compare the field of view between std and pano, they are the same.
Go to settings, camera API
Activate camera 2api
Now compare the std and the pano.
The pano uses the wide angle (3rd) camera.
Edit; this doesn't work of you are running OneUI.
Only from a gsi
@physwizz your idea is good but OpenCamera still doesn't recognize it.
As you can see in the image attached bellow, the app knows that there are three cameras and if I keep switching between them it passes over three cameras' id's and none of them is the wide-angle camera. Well, I am using lineage with the reapper kernel. Which one were you using when it worked?

sorry,
You must be right.
It looked like I was getting wide angle but I had the resolution set differently on the std.

This one should work with Video.
Only HDR+ need some time till shutter and sometimes all other apps crash in the Background during processing of HDR+ / Portrait or Nightsight pictures.
As addition it's the only camera I know on Nokia 5 which captures videos in 4k...
Thanks for the answer. Unfortunately, this is not the right camera. For the one I remember, the labels were not changed, only the round element was of a different color. That one is the camera lens on the label.
Didn't works for me
Has anyone else experienced a bug in Google photos where the image adjusts when you click to view them? In the preview section the images appear normal but when you click on one and view it the colours wash out slightly and looks quite different from the original. You can see it adjust moments after you click on it. It's happening on every custom rom I've tried but is fine when on stock miui. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this when using custom ROMs.

I have just re-installed the latest regular PE11 and the issue is there. The photos are backed up normally through Google photos to my Google drive. I have access to a Pixel 5 and the images appear fine there it's just on my Mi 9T the photos app alters the way the image looks. It's not all images though which is strange. Some I can view and nothing changes but then others I'll click on them and the picture brightens and washes out as if a filter has been applied.
I think I figured out the issue. Under the display settings I had selected 'adaptive' but when switched to 'saturated' the issue is resolved. Fingers crossed that's all there is to it but so far so good.
