A few reasons why this phone is a fail for converting iPhone users

A work colleague came and asked me to explain a few things about her new S3 today, since she knows I have one and she upgraded to it after having a little look at mine last week. She had an iPhone before.
1. Play Store default setting is to dump app icons all over your homescreens - she had about 30 icons dotted across her home screens, and she couldn't understand why they were duplicated there and in her app drawer.
2. The Touchwiz launcher default is not to alphabetically organise your apps, and she said she had a hard time finding each app when she wanted to use it
3. Some of the cool features are not turned on by default, and are buried in menus which a novice user is not going to find. Case in point, voice control of apps is under Settings in S Voice. First off there is no indication that Settings is even there unless you know to pres the menu button (not intuitive at all). If these features were turned on in the first place then the popup notifications you get when using the apps would've told her about their existence, and hence she could've been using them on her own.
4. Disabling built in apps - first off she had no idea that it could be done, she just knew that she couldn't uninstall them via Play Store like her downloaded apps, and there lots she wanted rid of. When I showed her the Applications Manager this caused confusion on three counts:
A) why is there two places to get rid of/disable apps,
B) why do you have to uninstall updates to some built in apps before the disable button is shown,
C) she didn't feel comfortable messing around in a menu which clearly has essential system apps with weird (to a novice) names such as Certificate Installer, Factory Test, Security Storage and com.android.smspush
5. She didn't really understand what a Widget was and why there was a list of them at the end of her app drawer, and how to use them. I can't remember whether the setup wizard covers widgets or not, but suffice to say if it did then she had not understood it, and dismissed it. She was scrolling to the end of the apps into her widgets and saying "I don't understand these funny looking apps - they don't do anything when I press them"... She did not see the tab at the top which detotes the difference between apps and widgets, and there is no other indication when you get into the widgets.
6. She says the battery life is not good compared to her old iPhone. After having a quick look at her Battery stats (unplugged after full charge, 7.5hrs off the charger 1.5hrs screen on time, 25% battery left) there was nothing in particular acting up, however her cell reception was burning a lot of the battery. She said that her reception (measured by the number of bars - I know, I know!) was not as good as her iPhone. So the 2 issues here are that her battery is objectively not as good, and her reception is subjectively not as good as her old iPhone.
7. She does like the camera, but was unaware of features such as panorama and shooting stills whilst recording video (and I'll mention again, the possibility of voice control). However she WAS aware that the new iPhone does these things (minus the voice control).
8. She didn't understand why she needed multiple accounts for things, Google, Samsung, Dropbox - she was unaware of what these accounts were even used for, and she thought it confusing to have them all on her phone. I didn't check, but it wouldn't surprise me if she was saving all her contacts to her phone rather than her Google account and thus negating a large benefit of having an Android phone.
All these things are minor to the likes of us who are used to Android, but she felt confused and out of her depth with the phone. I tried to show her stuff and reassure her, and she has said she will give it a few more days - but she isn't comfortable with it and may return it for another iPhone...
Admittedly she is not a techie sort of person, but I do feel that Samsung (and Google) could do a bit more to simplify things for the likes of her, because ultimately they are competing against Apple the masters of simple and making people feel at home with their devices.
My discussion with her has really opened my eyes as to why so many people love the iPhone, despite it being inferior in many ways to the S3. I guess you can sell a Ferrari at Ford prices, but not everyone has the skills to drive and park such a machine...
Opinions?

Literally dude I am surprised you wrote this long problem stats. First half of the things you asked are solved in settings for ex. your first problem is solved in playstore settings and similarly same with touchwiz go in menu press option button and u get grid view choose your type and your many other problems would be solved by reading whats written in plain english and smart phones are to bug around and learn about it not to keep in showcase

That's ironic, because you clearly didn't read the beginning of his post.

For point 1, you can disable the shortcut creation in the home screen so that it will create only in the app drawer.
I expect Google having its own findmylostphone service..... Samsung drive is useless.
The one big issue that I see in S3 is the lag that is in the home screen after returning back from another app. Samsung was pathetic there. Also inside the. App drawer lags inside the widgets tab. Even though S3 is a power horse Samsung has failed in many places....
No phone is perfect to fulfil everyone's need but the features that are released shouldn't be as half baked as the TW home screen. Disappointed.

Get her to go Windows. It's just two rows but more customization than IOS.
What Samsung should do is make a Galaxy S4 and a Galaxy SW. Make the hardware exactly the same but market the S4 to intermediate to advance user and market the SW with Windows Phone 9 to beginner to intermediate users.
The reason I say that this is how they should approach it is because Android is like what you described inherently. It gives you a lot of ways to do things from every screen. Samsung can't really dumb it down anymore or there is no point using Android. So Windows for beginners is how Samsung should approach it but instead of fragmenting their market just call the next Ativ S a Galaxy SW and watch the money come in from the beginners.

IPhone for girls and soccer moms. Android is for advanced users. I understand what you're getting at.

I have a couple of friends who got the S3 just about the same time as myself. They both were ex iphone users and were both using BB torch prior to the S3. After a month, I was quite familiar with all the functions such as smart stay, direct call, swipe capture... etc. They were quite surprised that those features existed when i showed them, despite the fact there are pop up tutorials when you first use the phone. That's how i knew those features existed.
I dont think i'm any smarter than the average person, I think they are just too lazy and can't be bothered. Or maybe they are just living life and not sitting down with a computer, hitting the refresh button to see if the link to the latest JB leak have been posted up.

You apparently have a reading comprehension disability. He was pointing out that these things are not as obvious to others as they are to us, as in the case of his colleague.
This has been obvious to me since I first got an android. I have had no issues, though I have missed some options till reading about them a time or two or just forgot where they were.
That's why there will always be a need for the iPhone, for those who cannot figure **** out on their own.

That's the reason most people don't like android phones. They find it complicated. Those who know something about technology and open source or wants more from their phone they switch to android.

I can't understand the reason of this thread, most of the "problems" are just caused by the inexperience. Logically android it's not iOS and i don't get why she spent her money in a phone that don't wanna learn to use

Thank you for your replies regarding on how to "fix" her issues, perhaps I didn't make it clear enough - I was able to sort all of her issues out for her as I am well versed with Android. The point is that many of her issues require digging down into menus that a novice could not know existed, or they are issues caused by thoughtless defaults on the part of the manufacturer.
Many people (iPhone users especially I think) pick up a device and learn how it works by using it, they don't want or have time to read manuals or dig through settings menus trying to guess what might or might not be in there. For instance my colleague couldn't make the mental link between installing a new app and having it appear in two different places (seemingly randomly arranged, because it would just go to the first empty space on her home screen, and her app drawer was not alphabetically organised).
If she couldn't make that mental stretch, how would you then expect her to think "Ah, this behaviour might be adjustable - where would I adjust it? Oh of course, in the Play Store settings, where if I press the Menu button (with no indicator that there is a menu underneath that button on that screen) and de-tick auto-add widgets"
And they aren't even widgets, they're app icons! So even if she had got there by some stroke of luck, she probably wouldn't have understood it anyway, because widgets are something else!
My point is that Android and Samsung have a long way to go in the usability stakes for novices.

She got the phone because she was impressed with it's physical characteristics, big screen & nice camera. But using it has been far more difficult for her than her old phone, and hence she doesn't feel comfortable with it unfortunately.

Man I gave up long ago trying to convert iPhone users.
I tried to convert 3 at my work, and all 3 times it backfired on me. They could not grasp Android after using iOS for so long and you become the ASSHOLE that ruins their life. iOS is a perfect operating system for most people, you don't really have to think much to use it. It's just so beautifully easy to use and intuitive that you could just pick it up and master it within 10 minutes.
On that note, I could NEVER EVER go back to iOS, ever. When I use an iOS device, it feels like I'm using a phone. When I use my Android device, it feels like I'm using a computer.

So basically OP, she doesn't know how to use the phone yet?
Why the hell did she buy a phone thinking she would instantly know how to use it?

I edited my reply with more thoughts. Basically, I don't see Android going that route of simplifying because that is just not in the Android genetics. All android manufacturers should follow HTC and Samsung and make idiot proof Window phones to supplement their advance android devices. Because let's face it, if they dumb down Android some more most of us are gone once we get bored of Jelly Bean. No one here wants Android 4.2 to be simple like IOS.

Don't understand it either. I jumped on a Mac the other day and was lost in iOS. Problem IMHO Mac holds your hand does it for you, whether you like it or not.
Android, less hand holding and many ways to do the same task. Can see that being confusing. It's like a prisoner being let free, all those new options are so confusing.
Like comparing a new Honda with automatic everything. To a Ferrari or Porsche that surrounds you with options of how you want everything to operate.
As I say in IT, to most plebes RTFM.

Canadian Moto X First Impressions

Hey all,
I managed to get a Canadian Moto X. I noticed there are other dumps from Verizon and AT&T. Would anyone be interested in the Canadian system dump?
I've never done a system dump, but I doubt it's something I can't do. If anyone is interested, and can point me to the right direction; I'd be more than happy to supply the dump.
Tried following this guide:

Brief history:
Major iOS nerd. Made my living from iOS dev (didn't sell apps, but worked on projects on the iOS platform). Always have been an Android follower, though. Have all the Nexus devices, but they always end up sitting in the drawer. Owned a few non-Nexus phones, HTC, Commtiva (uggh), Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4.
Quick overview:
• The white is nice, but I can see it getting dirty quick. The surface of the backplate is very smooth to touch. Somewhat slippery (doesn't offer traction whatsoever) despite having a weaved carbon fibre look, I expected it to feel a bit "rough", like unpolished CF.
• Device itself feels magnificent. Has a substantial feel to it, yet it weighs less than the Nexus 4. The device is heavy at the top (speaker top), which I find to be a clever design, it rests on my palm better as it would rest on the middle & index fingers better. That dimple in the middle, feels awesome too. It's the equivalent on dimples on keyboards (F & J keys), it's there to let you know how to hold the phone the right way.
• Speaking of palm, I have a slightly larger than average palm size, and the device feels just right. It's not overly big. Which is one of the primary reasons why I wanted to check out the phone. The 4.7 display feels oddly more fitting, than the Nexus 4, thanks to the much smaller bezel. Less shimmying the device to reach the back button.
• Had a tad bit of problem setting up Touchless Control, because it was so fussy about zero ambience noise. Had to find a dead silent room. Way too fussy.
• Active Notifications, something I can't live without anymore; and it's only been a day! I think this is a very Apple-ish feature; except Motorola beat them to it (or Apple isn't into AMOLED screens).
• Battery life, I don't know. Seems to hold longer charge better than my S4. I intentionally let the phone run without charging it since last night. I wanted to see a real life test. I'm sure the smarter guys/reviewers will be doing a much more through/scientific test than I will be.
• The additional features (Assist, Switcher, Motorola Connect) are quite useful and not gimicky! I didn't read any reviews prior to getting the phone (that's just how I roll) and I was pleasantly surprised to see Assist! If you're unfamiliar, it's a Do Not Disturb app, similar to iOS 6's, with additional features (mute during meetings, driving mode). Implementation is quite the same as iOS 6's.
• The OS feels very AOSP. There's some random customization here and there, but very very bare. I can't find any thing that is not within the Holo guideline. It's super responsive, despite being a dual core CPU. Motorola must've done some major optimization to get 4.2.2 to run like this. It feels faster than the TouchWiz ROM on the S4; probably because Moto X isn't bloated.
• Another nice surprise is to see a "Google" folder on the home screen. All of the Google apps, preloaded. It might be a turn-off for some, but I thought that was a nice addition. I mean, Motorola being a Google company…
• There are a few visual glitches, Navbar being semi transparent and if that's intentional, then it's not "right" because most wallpapers don't fit the 4.7", leaving a good 20 DIP solid black navbar.
• I'm not used to seeing a carrier label on the top left corner. Nexus 4 didn't have this. I much prefer not to see this at all.
• Oddly enough, I have not seen any Rogers' bloat! There is a teensy bit of hope!

Active notifications: Do you ever find the "pulsing" to be annoying? For example, if you have the phone face up on your desk, is it annoying to have to wait until the active notification lights up before you can check your messages/know if you have a message at all? I love the concept of active notifications, but I want to be able to not wait for it to come up.
Nav bar: I think that's intentional. No way they would overlook that part. I never liked the transparent nav bar anyways.
Carrier label: I've seen some reviews or videos that didn't have the label on the top left and am disappointed that it's there. I'm sure I would find it annoying as well so hopefully we can find a way to nuke it.
TIP: Maybe you should renamed this thread into the impressions thread? I could see it taking off. Or maybe just copy your post into a fresh thread with an appropriate title? Be a good place to aggregate all the impressions for this strange phone that many people are unsure of buying.

Pulsing: Not at all. It's a good design, IMHO. if the screen is off, then there's nothing to worry about. Look at it from the "no news is good news" perspective. The same design as LED blinks! Since you asked, it's clever (IMHO) that you would have to grab your phone for the screen to display the time. At least I don't have to press the lock screen button to check the time.
Nav Bar If this is intentional, then that's a very strange design decision. My live wallpaper won't fit flushed against the 1280 height. :sad:

I've always made my LED "always on" instead of pulsing. Guess I'd have to change my habits with the X. And like you said, maybe it's for the better that I don't constantly jump to my phone. As an additional question: if you have an outstanding notification, how often/in what intervals does it pulse? Does it pulse slower as the notification is not checked after a while? If you have no notifications at all, how often does it pulse? (Sorry, just very intrigued by these notifications)
The transparency of the bar is intentional, but I assume the wallpaper isn't isn't and it would actually be odd that they overlooked that part. This isn't an issue for me though as I always hide by nav bar and use LMT.
And yeah, I would definitely need to get rid of that label...ugh. Question, what is up with your homescreen? Can't be a ROM cause it's too early so is it some launcher?

Edit: With 2 different types of notifications, the screen pulses every six seconds-ish. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen the screen pulse/breath without any pending notification.
What is it with my homescreen that you find odd? The lack of icons? I just picked an empty page. I'm running Action Launcher.

Ah good to know about the wallpaper.
And yeah, I just never seen that launcher before so the widgets looked interesting. Always been a Nova guy.

Interesting.
Is it possible to make the AN (active notification) show up by quickly covering the light sensor and then uncovering it? This would simulate taking the phone out of your pocket. I assume it works, but wonder how well. Could be a nice little trick to get the AN to pop.

It seems like a combination of a few sensors. Covering the device doesn't activate AN. However, moving it about will bring up AN. So, gyroscope based?

Ah that's pretty cool. Just shake the phone to show AN. Works too I guess.

I can't stress how COOL the Touchless feature is! I mean, EAT YOUR HEART OUT, SIRI!
Too bad I can't call it something else, other than "OK Google Now". I'd do HELLO MOTO for ****s and giggles.

- You say the back is smooth, but is it soft-touch or a hard surface?
- How much free space was there before you put Action Launcher on it?
- Some reviews noted that whites have a pink tint to them - is this true for yours?
- How's the speaker phone sound quality?
- Do you connect it up to your work email? If so, does Assist allow you to stop it from synching overnight?

- mine is neutral white. There's a pearl effect.
- I'll test speaker!
- assist doesn't stop syncing. Only suppressing notifications.

Thanks for the first impressions, I am getting more and more excited for the phone as I read more of what you write. But I was wondering though how you went about unlocking your phone? You didnt have to do it through the carrier did you?

Will the PRIV be rootable?

I got the priv and it's my third day using it and man do I miss my s5, most importantly TOUCHWIZ. I had Samsung since 2010 so it's so weird to me. But my s5 was getting really laggy and slow. I'm kinda regretting the priv because I miss switching batterys, I hate being connected to an outlet and I miss having root. Would the priv be able to get root at least? I wanted something new but this is not my cup of tea. If there's no root then I'll just end getting the note 4 with removable battery and SD slot.

I am also hoping there is a non tethered root method discovered for the Priv. I think there might be but I know it will be difficult. Many well known devs have already commented even before the Priv that root access will become more difficult with MM.
Just curious but what exactly are you missing about touchwiz? I have a several Samsung devices & one of the first things I like to do is rip touchwiz out & either leave functions disabled or replace it with an alternative solution. I just never liked the cost of lag that running pure stock left you with.
If you let us know specifically what your missing we may be able to offer 3rd party solutions you might actually find superior to what you get with touchwiz.

I like the weather and clock all in one and how everything is more simple. This BlackBerry android is really complicated and boring. I never really liked stock Android, Nexus and so on.

The weather and clock combo is a simple fix. You can take your pick of hundreds of options in the PlayStore.
The simple maybe a bit harder. Samsung really did dumb things down on their devices. (apple of Android)

Yeah that's true, I can't believe all these apps on here on my PRIV are like all downloaded from the Google Play. They really got into te agreement that they were using android on their phone.

Not sure what you're trying to communicate here but I especially love the fact that BlackBerry is actively trying to bring the best they have in smartphone tech to the Android platform.
I don't find it complicated at all. In fact I find out exactly the opposite. The shortcuts they add to the launcher & keyboard alone have saved me tremendous amounts of time. I admit I send allot of emails & text messages but I actually like to work on my phone [emoji1]
I think you hit it in the spot when you pointed out that you never really liked stock Android which is not really a BlackBerry thing. Sure they could have done more to customize the interface like Samsung did with Touchwiz but until the Note 5 came out I really hated how slow & laggy Touchwiz made my past Samsung phones. It made my a Note 4 upgrade to lollipop so slow I had to wipe the phone & go back to kitkat.
I'd also recommend getting Chronos widgets from the Playstore. They have a great time, date, calendar combo widget.
Don't get me wrong because I think the Priv is far from perfect. I would have really preferred the following items
* removable battery
* fingerprint scanner
* DTek software that could actually block application permissions so that I have total control over my personal info
* more control over the launcher functions like the bottom screen gestures
* more control over the edge screen options & functionality
* more control over the productivity tools
* Developer Edition Priv hardware with unlocked bootloader & root access so XDA can help fix the things preventing the Priv from being the must-have smartphone device it can be!
* the rest of the missing BB7.1 & BB10 missing features & gestures [emoji1]

You can view screenshots through Photos. Click on the three lines at the top left and then you can change the view to device files. You'll then see your screenshots.
I don't think you can set the home and back buttons to always on which is probably a good thing the next time you go watch a video or some other action that might have those in your view.

And even if you're in an app that's full screen, if you swipe up/in from the bottom of the device, the buttons appear again for use.

So far, it's a great improvement on all fronts, of particular note, the issue with multiple keypresses on the PKB has been resolved, so now I can truly touch type again at speed without fear.

I don't know of a way to do exactly what you're looking for but what I have done as a work around is use an app called All in One Gestures to setup gestures that I use to initiate a Home, Back, Last App navigations by swiping the edges & corners of the screen

My Priv has been working much better after this update
I was having trouble with writing to my ext sdcard with exfat but after the update all my issues have disappeared

Ah, I wasn't directing my comment at you, it was for the original person you responded to. It's a native Android function since... I think kitkat to do the swipe in from the bottom edge of the screen to bring up the softkeys whenever you're in fullscreen modes.

Idol5 - Prime w/Adds vs. No Adds

Does anyone know if they have some mechanism to keep the firmware from add free device being imaged to the one with advertisement? I'd be interested in knowing if other firmware could be loaded on the phone that ships with advertisement.

I am searching for the same answer but I doubt that it will get much support to enable flashing it until it gets more popular or one of the devs on xda gets one for themselves! Very happy with the phone but the crap Amazon is putting on the lockscreen is nothing I would ever buy. Developer option is also disabled on the device.

Well, I found a little bit of hope today. I installed MS's Arrow Launcher today and I no longer have the crap on the lockscreen. I'm certainly happy about that and who knew Ms makes a great product for Android!

The various launchers will remove lockscreen ads as long as you dont reboot the phone. Once you reboot, they will be found on the lockscreen again.
Source: Have had both 5s. Got the Amazon laden version, realized the apps drained battery, and took up an enormous extra 6-7GB on the phone from stock (seriously?! 32GB storage, and only have 15 left? ridiculous...), so I returned it and paid the extra 80 for the stock version. Not only do I have just under 10gb used, but battery lasts FAR longer. Over a few days usage, Im averaging 75% battery left with moderate usage after work. I take it off the charger at 730a and get back home at about 630p.

Hi Guys, I've just bought a 6T....12 Hrs ago.
I love it, it gave me a real Wow switching it on.
There's just 3 things niggling me.
1. One speaker? Really? One Speaker?
2. The Clock and Weather Widgets, I can't get them lined up on the screen, also the trademark Red digit is not incorporated into the clock widget and both the weather and clock widgets show the date....!!! So side by side they not only don't align they repeat the same data and don't match.
3. Can't hide apps....would be nice to hide a load of stock apps I will never use.
Apart from those 3 gripes, the phone is amazing.
I absolutely love it and am very, very glad to be part of the OnePlus community.

Let me tell you what I've learned since I have gotten mine. I'm not sure about the clock and weather widget. But at far as the single speaker, this phone doesn't need 2. This summer l speaker is loud. And you can hide apps by creating a Locker. I'm not sure yet how to do that but you can Google that, that's where I read about it.

Thanks...yeah I hear you about the speaker but when you are watching a movie all the audio is in on one side....I mean come on it's mono and that went out in the 1960's!!!!

My first oneplus aswell ?. Another tip in hiding apps is that you can store them in the hidden section of your stock launcher. You can do that by swiping up to get to your apps and if you gently Swype from the left corner to the right it brings up the hidden section. One the speaker in with you most times than not I tend to cover it by accident while watching YouTube etc

You can hide apps, open the app drawer, swipe left, you can hide them in there.
Btw there's a dual speaker mod in the app section.

I did see the dual speaker mod but I need to be rooted and I'm still debating whether it's worth it or not. I don't want to make my phone buggy and slow and I'm sick of cloak root and stuff like that....

Fair enough, it's a great phone stock as well, I just rooted to mess around, plus I like the international rom more since I'm on the t-mobile variant.

Yeah I haven't rooted yet. Just got my bootloader unlock token today. I think I'm going to wait for the dev of some ROMs to catch up a little. To me this phone is perfect as is.
By the way in my earlier statement about the speaker, replace the word summer with single. I got auto corrected.

It is amazing, so clean and fast. I've had no stalls, apps download and install in seconds without causing any clitching.
I can have a dark theme on an amoled screen which looks awesome. I think it's brilliant. I've got the international version because I'm UK. I might well root but now I can hide the apps it would only be to sort out the speaker...but that's in the future....I'm more than happy for the time being now knowing I can hide the bloatware.

I completely agree with the OP regarding the feeling when using this phone. I had been a long time htc fan but after TMobile stopped carrying it, I was lost because the os experience was severely lacking from the other manufacturers. I'm on jump on demand and I tried fiddling around with lg and Samsung for a little bit but just want satisfied. Finally made the switch to iPhone and was happy for 2 years with apple, however after apple pulled the stunt of increasing prices for subpar upgrade to the iPhone this year, left a bad taste in my mouth and when I saw TMobile will carry the one plus, I decided to jump and give it a shot. It's been a long time since I had the feeling of having the perfect phone and this is coming from someone who tends to change phones every 3 to 4 months due to the freedom provided by JOD. I will be keeping this until the next upgrade from one plus comes out. Plus I got lucky as one of the reps sim unlocked my phone even though I met none of their criteria for unlock in the spirit of Thanksgiving holiday! So a pleasant bonus and now currently waiting for bootloader unlock code for root. The only reason I want to root is due to completely and utterly blocking ads from everything including apps. That is one thing I miss from apple. A lot less ads on the device compared to Android, however that should be resolved soon. This stock os is perfect otherwise! Amazing battery life, extremely fast charging, and buttery smooth! What else can one ask for!

Yep, that's the weather widget it's great and has the red digit.
But there is no clock with the red digit.
There is however a setting for the red digit clock for the lockscreen...so somewhere in the phone is a red digit clock widget!!!

Yep it's a great phone....very very glad I made the switch from HTC.
Advertisement wise you can use Edge browser with AdBlocker extension. It helps a lot.

Hey look at the widgets I've found...

The red digit is only the 1. Anytime a 1 shows in the temperature or time, it's red.
