Congratulations..
Can you please check this out for me, it will be very helpful..
please can you check (when screen locked) if the notifications will show as ambient (screen black with notifications text only for a while) when receiving a new notification..? I know there is an always on display feature, but was wondering if still with it the new notifications texts will show on a black screen for a while like the ambient display feature in the old pixel..
Really appreciate if someone can answer..
Is there a way on Pixel phones to edit the nav bar buttons like on most other phones? I like the back button on the right.

We need more real world reviews on the screen from Avg Joe consumer. The screen is taking a beating online. Makes me weary. My 6p had that bluish rainbow effect viewing angle issue.
Can you comment more on how the display looks to you personally? So far the reviews are not good.

So far the screen is fine. I'm not the right guy to ask about screen this or that so I would defer to the big screen thread. The only thing I do notice is a blue tint when you tilt the screen 20 plus degrees like a lot of the other people have stated but it doesn't really bother me as I almost always look at the screen straight on
In the unboxing videos I've seen, I haven't seen the tool for removing the sim card tray.
Is there one included? I'm not sure I have mine still from my 6P. I'm sure I can use something else, but it would be nice if the new phone came with one.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: so funny. Not 60 seconds after typing this, I click on an unboxing video and the first thing shown is the sim card ejector, which is in with the manual packaging.
Oh well, I hope I get this bad boy soon. My ship date is scheduled for the 24th and I'm hoping for sooner.
Yeah got my phone yesterday as well, screen is different to say the least but the accuracy of color is really gorgeous. Google said they will be releasing a fix for the screen to adjust it or maybe disable SRGB as it's not for everyone but the phone works great, lightning fast, and take everything I throw at it. I have substratum themes running on it now (non rooted) and still the phone works great and looks great.

Is there an option in "Developer Options" to toggle sRGB? With it enabled on my 6P, the colors do look more muted, yet more natural. I was just wondering if the picture color mode can be changed.

Returned my 002 Evo to the horrible radioshack and went to bestbuy mobile and bought myself a new Evo.
Things I've noticed at first glance. The epson screen and the battery cover. The screen is noticeably much more vivid and brighter. The matte cover on the back has a great finish and feels like a Nintendo DSi. No more light leakage!!! Woot! And odd but the power button responds much smoother and feels a lot better when pressed down.
Also some info I got from the reps there were that Sprint is going to put out another update to fix the 30 fps limit. Great news and I played around with the black and white demo evo. It has a GLOSSY finish which totally turns the phone off to me, because of finger prints and it looks incredibly ugly in my opinion.
I checked the firmware on my evo and it's still 1.32.651.6! I can still root my phone!
DT10.06.17 is my build date.
This is the Evo I should've received during the launch date. This phone is incredible!
Edit: After playing with the phone today, the speaker is much louder & the call quality is much clearer and louder than my 002.
Yay for you.
I too am still on old version...but wonder how can we get to any new updates if they all locked like new OTA. Hope this only means (yay devs) that we just have to wait a little longer between updates to get new stuff.
That 30fps fix would be nice to see...but store reps lie like rugs. (Oh wait, did I say that outloud?)

I've seen this stated both ways on this message board. I think that it comes down to preference.
There's no way that the Epson screen is brighter than the Nova. Might yield more accurate colors, but out of the thousands of reports, the Nova is much brighter always. Are you sure you have an Epson screen? Not all 003s are Epson (as it's my case). I'll only believe it when I see pictures.

Epson: Better quality, not as bright.
Nova: Purple tent, brighter.
Or that's how I would put it.
Why are so many people thinking that if its 003 its Epson? I got a build date of Jun 16 and its Novatec. So they know the problem exist and they keep sending phones with Nova. I think there is something else involved in there.

Thank god I'm buddy's with the radio shack guy, he's getting me a new one even though I kinda don't even need one. So he will not update it if I ask him to not update it....I'm just not sure which screen I prefer. I love the Nova screen, I just can't imagine a screen looking much better. If the Epson isn't as bright that kinda sucks, though more accurate colors do sound good...and then there is the issue of the 30fps thing. The hack we have currently works out awesome on my Nova...I wouldn't want massive tearing, however if they do address the bug then it is a moot point.
Buuuut I don't think that they are ever going to. I might just turn down the new one and deal with my slight light leak and very very minor screen lifting. It hasn't gotten any worse in 2 weeks.
Hmm, decisions decisions....
There is that "fix" for screen separation that involves a hair dryer. I've been wanting to try it as people who have done it say it works. Plus people with N1's said they had the same problem and the hair dryer "fix" does the trick.
A quick way to tell which screen you have is with the "Power Control Widget" If you cycle through the brightness settings and it instantly changes you have a Epson, if it fades in and out for each change you have a Nova. At least that's what I have been reading in the forums.

Instant brightness change. I also compared it to my GF's launch day 002 and they are hugely different in screen colour/sharpness.
Hm true it's not as bright as the nova only difference is in direct sunlight, BUT the colors are much more vivid and yes I do have a epson. Tried the power control widget and my screen doesn't fade like it use to, it changes the difference in a split second. My build date for the phone is not bad either. DT10.06.17.
Hi everyone,
I'm starting this thread to show you guys that not all Nexus S AMOLEDS are the same. I purchased a Nexus S on launch day from one store, and my brother bought a nexus S from another best buy store. We were comparing each others phones, and mine turned out to be darker than his, specifically the whites. We compared our screens at full brightness, and we set the same backgrounds, and his was noticeably better looking. So I went and exchanged mine, the new one I got still suffered from having darker whites, but it was not as bad as the first one, so when we compared them again, his was still better. I took a few pictures of the new one i got compared with his (on right). It may not look like much, but if you look at it in person, it's very noticeable when they are next to each other. I think you guys should compare your nexus s with a display model at a store, or with someone else to see what I'm talking about. I think it's easiest to see what i'm talking about if you look at the search widget. Like I said the first one I had was worse, but I'm comparing the newly exchanged one (left) with my brothers (right).

lol thats true. it made me laugh lol
download a solid white wallpaper. set the brightness to the highest. if one of them is cool blue white then this is good screen. if its warm yellowish white, then its a bad screen.
also there is the issue with pinkish disaplay. download a solid gray wallpaper. set the brightness to the lowest, if the gray turns to pink a little. you have a defective screen no matter what others tell you. if it stays gray " like my old Samsung Galaxy S " then you have a perfect screen.
AND there is also the grid pattern matrix you can see on the lowest brightness on the same gray wallpaper. ALL of them are more visible on the Super Amoled screens, just try to get one that is not very noticable.
if you got all those 3 perfectly " with no dead pixels or stuck pixels. then your phone worth alot.
i sold my galaxy S USED more than i bought it NEW because of these effects when i mentioned them to the buyer and he saw with his own eyes the difference. plus it didnt have single scratch on the whole phone so it was like a brand new.

No one's nitpicking. It's a matter of what you're willing to settle for. I paid my 580.00 for a phone to display the colors correctly. I didn't pay that much for the display to change colors just because I lower the brightness.

ya, after i took pics, i realized they were not on the same page on the home screen.
This is a very common issue on the Galaxy S phones too. Different suppliers are used in the manufacturing process resulting in some screens with warmer color temps, and others with cooler ones. The Engadget review of the Nexus S specifically called out a warmer temp by the way.

Dumb question, but did you verify that the brightness levels in settings are set to the same values? Or at least compared the two phones when at the lowest and highest settings?

ya, i actually made sure they were both brightest, and when they are both on the lowest, you can tell one of them displays brighter whites. But the first one I had was worse than the one I have in the pictures on the left, it's hard to notice that you have a screen that does not produce nice whites, unless you see another nexus s that does a better job.
I actually like the ones on the left, the ones on the right crush the blacks, resulting in basically everything washed out, even if it "looks" better to you, it isn't from a calibrator prospective.
The Evo 4G had the same thing going on with its display. HTC used 2 different Manufacturers for the screen, One Novatec, One Was Epson. I believe the Novatec panel had darker colors (warmer?) resulting in more of a purplish color on blacks (what ll_l_x_l_ll calls pink for whatever reason) While the epson didnt have any purplish tone, but most say had a washed out look.
I would say though that on the nexus S, probably 99% of them are going to have a little purplish effect on the lowest brightness setting. If the OPs brothers phone has no purplish color, that would be the first i have seen. Ive seen many many demo units, several video reviews, and even the 2.3 rom ported to other galaxy S phones, and they all have the "purplish" display.
All my whites on my phone are really white, and blacks are really black.
Only be concerned if your screen looks like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882862
That would definatley warrant an exchange, because they are NOT supposed to look like that.
My Screen looks better than his I9000 though too, but that could be his camera too washing out the colors a bit

Yeah my camera isn't great, it was poor light but it was enough to show the difference.
My i9000 screen is pretty incredible, I'd be impressed if I saw one better.
Oddly though, you say that if it turns blue when the brightness is turned right up, it's a good screen - my Nexus S does that. But it's yellow when the brightness is low.
Personally I think I'm going to take your advice in another thread. I'm going to return this phone for a refund, enjoy using my i9000 for a while as it's now apparent that the screen is excellent (I never really had GPS issues either, so I'm pretty lucky), and go around stores when they have stock to find a screen that compares favourably against my i9000. I'm in a nice position that I can do a side-by-side comparison each time.

So, I guess not many of you have ever messed around with the LCD monitor in front of you (if you have one).
Mine I can set to be a cool white or a warm white.
Here is the real problem... Your brother is smarter than you. You see, there is a difference maybe in the screens. But instead of him *****ing about it, he likely just said his was better. Thus leaving you with the **** screen.
The tables could have been turned if you would have said "HAHA your screen is broken, and mine is better" the second you found the screens were different. Then it would be him here all upset about the screen.
The things people ***** about on this form are just crazy. And no, I don't care about how much you spent on your phone. When you buy any product you should only have a expectation that it is usable, not perfect. And thats mostly because perfect is mostly opinion when it comes to things like this.
Also, this is a phone, not a pro display marked for having the most accurate color production.
What kills me most is the people who take phones back over and over for problems that only exist in their heads. All you are doing is raising the cost of phones and keeping them high for everybody else.
Let me start by telling you that I am a fan of LG screens and lcds and I can't stand the AMOLEDs on cellphones and the unnatural colors. I have an LG TV, LG monitor and had G2 and the G3. I am a new owner of the G4 that I just purchased yesterday.
The reason I switched to this phone is to have better camera and better visibility in sunlight which is where I work. I work outside and need good sunlight visibility and take a lot of photos and videos outside.
The problem I have and I'm sure all the G4 owners will have this, is that the color of the screen fades out especially the greys and the blacks on screen. I'm not having the typical light bleed here. the whole screen fades out almost turning very very grey with texts and other colors fade out in color.
Its doing it on a cloudy day as well. Ive swtiched the phone out to a new G4 because of this problem and the issue is still there with the new phone. I'm really shocked by this because all of the reviews going around the net are raving how its visibility is great in sunlight!
I think LG messed up really bad here, made the display awesome indoors and wasn't fully aware that the lcd is sensitive to sunlight.
I was wondering if anyone else is noticing this problem.
To do the test, go to a random website or some site with text which is more noticeble than other colors(grey texts turn really white so its a better test), hold the phone out for 3-5 seconds then look at the phone. You'll notice that the texts are very grey or even white. It has to be done in natural sunlight. It wont work in indoor lighting.
Then turn the phone upside down for 3-5 seconds then look at the text again to see it come back to dark black or visible color.
Please tell me I'm not the only one noticing this....
I might never come back to LG after this one... At least for my cellphones...
I don't even think it's fixable with firmware updates... oh and my brightness is on 100% when I test it. I've tried it with auto as well and same thing with the first G4 and the new G4 I switched out.
I would hate to pay a restocking fee of $50 just to return the phone.... LG what should I do?!
Yes - I've seen this twice when outdoors at work this week. Hoping it's a software issue they can address? What has been said in the past?
Thanks for the reply. I hope its a software issue as well but I doubt it... I looked all over the internet and not one thing has been said...
I can't believe all the reviews are raving about the visibility outside.... how is this better than G3??? even the G2 had better visibility
I think its like the Note 4 it goes into a high contrast mode, but I use Lux Light for auto brightness and it doesnt do it anymore
Agree on that.
Additional the display isnt as bright as LG made me belive, my G2 is noticable more bright than my G4 ?

This is a design by LG - to lessen the contrast in direct sunlight, so that you can supposedly can see more. If you cover the light sensor, it'll revert. It only does it at 98% brightness or higher.

Yes, that's because LUX controls brightness, not contrast.
You're talking about the contrast changing to lessen when under bright sunlight, no?

Yeah it doesn't detect it tell the lux gets really high, but if you take a flashlight to your sensor it will turn on. But either way its still easy enough for me to read I dunno guess I got good eyesight
I just took whole bunch of pictures of my kids at the pool full sun. I have a nexus 5 and 6 and the G4 is almost in another league as far as outdoor visibility imo. At least with the camera app. Haven't had the phone for long so will have to report back if I see this issue

The funny thing is that when I called LG from the Tmobile store they didnt even know about it. Thats why they swapped out the phone for me. Good CS

Depends on the movies and the brightness.
many things are a nightmare. it's funny some do and some don't. it's mostly dark things surrounded by grey/dark colors. Try watching a dark movie in it. it's all purple smudge!
but some movies like big bang theory have no problem, because it doesn't have much darkness in it! .
I do have to add that I mostly keep my screen brightness low.
I added the video anyway you can see it.
I only have that "problem" with very low brightness. It's very hard to notice for me and I don't have text issues. But I know the reason. When pixels are pure black they are turned off. When the image changes they need to be turned on again which leads to this dark purple issue. It's ,technically speaking, not an issue.

Yeah,i know.i have it even on medium or max
I hate this too, but its nothing new really, been there forever with the AMOLED screens. Its a "shade" from the pixels turning off > on. AMOLED blacks are good simply because it completely turns off the pixel that shows black. With LCD the pixels are always on which gives this "dim-grey" black, but doesn't have this "shade" issue. Making the AMOLED pixels turn on lightning fast would perhaps minimize this problem, I don't know really, but Samsung hasn't solved it yet. Or atleast cared for releasing the tech to the mass
Hi @all
is it normal to have a perfectly white display when looking straight at it and to have a slight reddish veil while tilting it? And is it normal that Amoled Cinema and Amoled Photo Mode are a lot more reddish than adaptive mode?
I am on my third Galaxy S8 now. My first one had a perfect display, even when tilting it had the standard blueish color of the Amoled Displays. Had to send it back because of a hardware issue.
My second and third one have the above mentioned "problems".
How is it on your device? I'm already thinking of returning even this one... i want a perfect display for the price I am paying.
Thanks for your reply.

I don't see any redish tint when tilting. Did you update your phone with the fix?

Yes I updated the phone to the latest firmware.
@Duskfall89 mine has that red veil issue as well but not enough to make me go nuts. I once had 1+1 and yellow band issue drove me nuts. Nevertheless, i think you can just set the red to the lowest on the RGB settings and it will go away. Im more worried about the battery haha

It's not an issue of being standard on oled displays. The blue tint is to produce a "vivid" look that catches the eye better.
Cinema and photo are suppose to have a warmer tint to match real life viewing. (because in real life, things have a warm tint) from the sun, and standard lighting.

It doesn't make me go nuts either but I know how perfect the display of my first S8 was

So is it normal that cinema and photo mode are more "reddish" than standard adaptive mode? I never tried those modes on my old S7 so I don't have any comparison.
@Duskfall89 i know how you feel. i can also verify that mine has a red veil when switching from cinema/photo/adaptive. Regardless, i think i can live with it. After going through the forums, many s8s are plagued with this issue and i got mine on Monday mind you! Others have mentioned that they have swapped around 3-4 units with most experiencing similar redness. If you're not satisfied, there are also who have swapped till they got the least red display unit but that would also run the risk having other parts that come faulty.. alas, people are never satisfied. I once swapped 3 msoft surfaces.

Yes, it's a lottery I guess...
I think I will stick with it, it really doesn't bother me too much, it's more about the fact that i know how my first S8 looked.
Amazon won't replace it anymore because it's the third phone I'd send back and so they want to check their entire stock. They offered me a complete cashback if I return it but then I would be without a phone. I could give it back, take my cash and then buy another one (which is now much cheaper than the price I paid at launch) but I am tired of setting up phones now

Yessir. They use a warm base as opposed to a cool base. If you really want to learn more about it Google TV color calibration and it will go into detail about why they use a "cool" blue tint for floor and selling and how true natural colors are more "warm" reddish
Then I recommend calibrating your TV and after a day of adjusting, you'll never want to go back.
Also, blue filter in the Phone settings will add a warm tint at night to help your eyes
@Acoustichayes good info !!! i guess i wont be so worried! but i guess the only issues here is that my reddish areas are focused at the top of the display and is not uniform across.

Thank yah. And the red tint on the top was apparently a software issue that was fixed in an update. There's a thread on it here somewhere. Just make sure your phone is updated

I had the same case but cannot really consider it as an issue as sometimes, i cannot barely see it. It's just the way it is. Also, you might wanna check out wider color gamut. i think that we're just used to the "blueish" as it looks natural but samsung uses deep red this time.

Hi, what do you mean with "had" the same case? did you get rid of it?
I got used to it now and it really isn't an issue but I'd prefer the "blueish" tint as my first S8 had that. Sadly it had the home button bug so I returned it.

Ok then it's the same as mine I could be make it more white if I'd play around with the colors but even then, while tilting the reddish veil still remains. Less noticeable but it's still there. So I decided to leave it as it was out of the box. At leats my home button now seems to work properly :laugh:
