S8 or the S7 Edge? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello everyone.
I'm looking for a new phone for myself and I've narrowed it down to the S7 Edge and the S8(Both exynos variants). I was wondering if anyone who has used both phones could decide for me. I can get the S7E for about $130 cheaper than I can get the S8. I like having a good camera(front and back both). I am, however, going to be keeping this phone for about 3-4 years since I'm a student and I'm looking to make this a one time investment till I graduate from university. Keeping that in mind, do you think I should get the S8 or the S7E? I don't mind paying a bit extra for the S8 but is it actually worth the extra $130? If I get an S7E, would it be able to last me till 3-4 years?
Thanks

what about between pixel vs s8

Pixel vs SG8
Pro : Camera
Pro/Con (depends on User) : Vanilla Android
Con :
Snapdragon 821 slower then the Exynos 8995 or the Snapdragon 835 (US Market)
Display of the Pixel just has 1920x1080 instead of 2,960 x 1,440.
Battery has a bit smaller Capacity with 2770 then the S8 with 3000.
Just to name a few differences.
But in the End it is your choice. (Price, Design etc)

Not many, as even though there is root, the root method has issues like battery not charging beyond 80%, also because of locked boot loader no custom kernels

I'm undecided between the S7 and the S8, so I can understand you.
I've read many reviews and I think I can say there isn't a night and day difference in real-life use between the two models.
The S8 has the following pros:
- 64GB memory
- 10nm processor, more efficient and less battery-consuming
- USB Type-C connector
- support for the QuickCharge 3.0 standard
- Bixby
- support for more LTE bands
- being the latest flagship model, it's very likely it will have Android P and another 4 years of security updates, while the S7 models will be stuck with Oreo and another couple of years of security updates, tops.
Generally speaking, I like the S7 better and I don't mind Bixby, the bigger screen or most of the things above mentioned, but I do think that a 64Gb memory, longer software support, support for USb Type-C may justify the price difference.

Do you think that roms will be availble later?

Had the Pixel before the S8 and everything beside the Screen and the Design were better with the Pixel...

Pixel is better until the S8 gets Android 8.0, I have the 1st Gen pixel and the S8. Oreo 8.0 is fantastic so I would go with the pixel and I believe it's only $400 now since the second Gen is out now

But if you buy snapdragon version you will not have custom rom and root (it's not working perfectly)

I sold my S7 edge to buy a S8. And the S8 is definetly better !
Not only the design of the S8 makes us think that the S7 edge is 10 years old, but the S8 is also better in every other aspect
And you must not forget that the S8 will have updates for 1 more year than S7 edge. It's something to consider

Samsung S6 Edge+ (does it have a loose button) or the Nexus 6P ? +my concerns

Hey guys!
I am kinda torn between these two devices. At first I waned the Edge+ but then after trying a few units in different shops I noticed that the home button is kinda loose. By loose I mean moving up and down (kind of like the one on the s6) instead of being stiff. Also I am pretty scared that it will be forgotten by Samsung after a while, just like my brand new s3 was forgotten back in the day (it only went from 4.0 to 4.3). Those being said..I think those two are my only concerns about the Edge+
On the other hand..is the Nexus 6P it's also a device I would like. It will always have the latest Android version (at least for about 3 years) and to me it looks okay. Not as sexy as the S6 edge+ but still looks nice. With this device I am concerned about either scratching the back of the graphite version..this exposing the raw aluminium...having the "visor" crack for no reason and I am also kinda concerned about the rigidity of the phone...last night I saw a guy on youtube bending it quite easily.
What would you recommend, guys? Nexus 6P or the Edge+
Please think what would you choose for yourself...and let me know. Also, are my concerns real? Did anyone scratch the back of the 6P or had it's visor crack by itself? Does anyone have an edge+ with a loose button? Hopefully if someone owns this device..they can shoot a really quick video showing the stiffness of the home button.
Also, even better...if someone owns both phones...which one would you pick again?
TLDR version: Nexus 6P or Edge+? Which one would you choose and why?
I am waiting for your answers guys! Hopefully I will get some fast.
Best regards,
Mihai Ilie
S6 Edge+ all over again
I've been using my S6 Edge+ since the launch day and if I have to, I'll pick this one again! I've never used a Nexus 6P, so probably my recommendation wouldn't be appropriate to depend on but the least I can do is tell you how the S6 Edge+ feels like!
1. No, I haven't noticed any loose Home button on my phone. Probably the store units were very roughly used. Also, I'm a hardware button fan (capacitive or tactile), so Edge+ gets a +1 here! It's just easy when the buttons are always there.
2. Display - The S6 Edge+/N5 Display super AMOLED display is amazing! The immersive feeling that you get while operating either of these devices is just incomparable! Deep blacks - another +1. 6P also has AMOLED as far as I've read but never tried it, so can't comment on its performance!
3. UFS2.0 vs eMMC 5.0 - If I'm currect, Nexus 6P is using eMMC storage while the the Samsung flagship is using UFS2.0 which is like 3 times faster than the former! And since it doesn't have any SD Card support, there's nothing to slow down the operations. Even the read/write from a PC on MTP is much faster than my old phones!
4. Exynos 7420 vs Snapdragon 810 - Processors are almost comparable except Exynos is clocked at 2.1 Ghz while the Snapdragon at 2 Ghz. Do not expect any such performance boost on either of them although the Exynos is 14nm fab while the other one is 20nm, so power consumption would a bit lesser in Exynos (just for the processor). If you look at the different benchmark results, you'll see Exynos 7420 above Snapdragon 810 but overall, the difference wouldn't be that significant!
5. 3 GB RAM vs 4 GB RAM - You might never need the additional 1 GB RAM with stock android on Nexus 6P but if you plan on putting another vanilla rom in your phone, an additional 1 GB would be significant in S6 Edge+. I never had any issue with the performance yet on S6 Edge+ but I believe 6P might perform better on a long run with additional upgrades and all (based on past nexus & note experience)
6. Camera : With OIS, S6E+/N5 has the best camera in the market! Sure 6P do have some nice slowmos, so it's upto your preference. I don't prefer to compare cell phone cameras, none of them are comparable to actual handheld cameras.
7. Gear VR - No, I'm not a Samsung fan but I do appreciate their efforts to excel in electronics industry. One of primary reasons behind getting a Samsung was to get my hands on Gear VR. And it was worth it! At just $99, it'll be the best toy you've ever owned! Combined with a Moga Controller, you'll be off to a parallel universe! Try it out in the stores.
8. Battery Life - With S6E+, I charge the phone at night and it survives the entire day on LTE always on and Wifi at home! I wouldn't say it has the best battery life, but I do not have any complains. Not so sure about 6P but considering it has 3450 mAh over 3000 in S6E+, I can only assume a better battery life with 6P.
Both the smartphones are comparable neck to neck although the S6E+ stands out due to it's amazing design. Both of them should be able to run all the latest games with highest details. The fingerprint sensor works great on S6E+, not sure about the 6P yet. And since you mentioned the software updates part, Nexus has always guaranteed upto 2 major upgrades and now they have announced 3 Years of monthly security updates (not featured updates) from the launch day of the device. As far as I've known, even Samsung has provided atleast 2 major upgrades (rolled out much slower than nexus though) on its flagships and recently they've shaken hands with Google on this monthly security update thing (not sure for 3 yrs or not though).
I know I probably haven't helped you choosing one but I hope the mentioned facts will help you choose one! Or the other comments will.:good:
No loose button here.

I'm in the same boat. Want to trade my oneplus two for a s6 edge plus or nexus 6p.
Love the design, camera and screen from the edge but love the updates, fingerprint sensor and front facing sound from 6P.
no loose button on my Galaxy s6 edge+ Plus.
touchwiz is mostly lag free. sometimes my instagram crash sometimes cloeses for no reason but don't no if its the phone or the app it self.
s6 edge plus should get 2 years update.
Nexus 6P bends easily if pressed in the right spot. but otherwise should be fine.
get Nexus 6P if you want latest updates quickly as possible and can't wait. and get 3 years update.

whats your next device after s6? and the reasons

In this thread you can share your experiences with the s6 and give reasons for buying a different phone.
got the feeling its about time to change.
Im simply tired of touchwiz and samsung not sharing any documentation of its exynos soc other than that s6 is a very nice designed device but the htc10 just seems to manifest my dreams.
bootloader can be unlocked
sd 820, 4gigs ram and sure it will be the first sd820 device running cyanogenmod soon.
only thing i will miss is the amoled screen thanks to samsung for locking bootloader of sd820 s7. i knew this would happen long before the bootloader rumors came out. they simply dont want people to make any custom modding on that soc so they dont loose exynos customers.
whats your next device you gonna buy or already own, and what is better and what is worse?
thanks
i wait 2 model cycles/years, so Galaxy S8 or HTC 11. If I had to get a new phone today, I'd get a S7. HTC 10 looks great, but I'd rather have a LED screen.
What about iphone 7?
waiting for galaxy s8/9
I am still waiting, I want an amoled screen, large internal storage (128GB), IR Blaster, good camera. No phone except the S6 fulfills these needs. I also would like a durable phone (plastic) removable battery and waterproof and dual good speakers but these are secondary needs. I also prefer touchwiz
I will wait until end development is s6 be weak or until end s6 die?
Ulefone future best battery 6500mah 5.5 p
I'll stay with S6 or wait for a Nexus 6P 2016 edition or something. And I kinda like the HTC 10, but unless it gets quite well working aosp, not gonna switch.
ZUK Z2 Pro. Main reason is the big battery, (probably) CM OS out of the box, and the fact that I can sell my S6 and pay only a tiny bit more to get the Z2 Pro.
just seen there are sd820 6gb ram phones comming. not sure what to buy :/ this is so confusing
if note 6 is confirmed to run next gen snapdragon, ill wait till fall
but my feeling tells the bootloader will be on lockdown.
next nexus.
had n4, n5, used n6p... nothing from those manufacturers mentioned comes close in terms of stability, customizability, integration with google. They do have some features I'd like to see in pure android natively, but those can be achieved with root (and since it's not voiding warranty there is no argument for me not to do it). Camera was an issue... till n6p, definitely not an issue anymore.
I'm staying with S6 until S8/S9. I happen to like modern Touchwiz so as long as Samsung keeps producing arguably the best hardware around I'll stick with them.
Top smartphones at the moment (in my opinion!):
1st: Galaxy S7 (edge)
2nd: HTC10
3rd: Nexus 6P
Next phone I will maybe get will be pretty sure the Nexus 2016 (6 variant), if its a flop the Galaxy S8.
But I have to say with Samsungs new Good Lock UI I dont miss Android Vanilla that much anymore. Its pretty okay and in many ways even better than Android Vanilla.
Xiaomi Mi5
Galaxy S7 / S8
Nexus 2016
Would be my next if I have to change
Zuk Z2 Pro
My next phone will definitely be a Nexus or iPhone. I used the last few Nexus and wanted to try something new, now I got the S6 Edge. Wish I had waited for the Nexus 6P.
Galaxy S9 / 2018 Nexus
Galaxy S8.
Samsung S8 or Nexus 2016.
The S6 is perfect with the exception of battery life. Here's hoping they reintroduce IR and perhaps bump the battery beyond 3000mah. Also, USB C is needs be there in the next galaxy.
Iphone 7

[DISCUSSION] What phone do you buy next time and why?

My biggest reasons to leave Samsung is because of the updates and features that doesn't come to older devices like features of the s7 to the s6. I'm really really sick of samsungs updates always late.
I just want to know what phone you gonna buy next time and why?
1.) OnePlus 5
2.) Nokia 8
3.) LG G6
4.) Samsung Galaxy s8
5.) Pixel 2
6.) Huawei p10
7.) Sony Xperia XZ Premium
the S8 is the #1 phone in my mind, hope they do something new, the pixel is ugly, the V20 is an LG...which i hate...and their UI is the worst, the iphone is......no need to say.....so the S8 might be the only phone for me....
I'm actually switching to the iPhone 7[emoji1] . Definitely away from Samsung!
No idea really. Want to go back to stock so won't be a Samsung. The OP3 is too big, 5.1 is ideal. Pixel is too expensive. There's nothing, atm.
xiaomi for me. maybe the successor to the mi5/mi5s. preferrably one with strong aosp support so I can test out miui and aosp roms
OP3. AOSP is a must, and this time I want to buy atleast 5.5" screen. OP3 has better design, battery, performance, and software.
Probably S8 or Note 8. I really like new Grace UX and the design of their hardware.
Most likely S8 but will see what is available when I can extend my phone contract again.
Haven't really had a reason yet to leave the Galaxy S line (S2, S4, S6). But if I switch it most likely will be because of the support for custom roms.
I'm thinking 1+3 but not really sure. Something with a high XDA forum threads count and stable AOSP roms.

I will go for note 8 if they releas..
Before my s6e I had a HTC m7 with AOSP and that was really good, now with my s6e I just think that much power (cpu power) is a little useless (at least for me). I'm looking for a better battery phone and not that expensive like s7e or note series. So probably getting a xiaomi redmi 4 prime.

Might go for S7 Edge after the release of S8 haha. Thought of Redmi 4 prime too, but camera department on Xiaomi is sad Was thinking of Mi Note 2, but for 50€ more, I can get S7 Edge ...
I really love my S6 but the battery is really bad for me and I'm always struggling getting through the day. So, I'm intensively checking my options, escpecially all those new Chinese phones like ZUK Z2 Pro, LeEco Le Pro 3 which provide quite some bang for the buck. But all those phones have one or more disadvantages like bad camera, no IR blaster (I actually use that a lot) that I can't accpet.
I spent less than 400€ getting my S6 new about 14 months ago and I don't want to spend more on the next phone I get. I think currently the Oneplus 3 is probably the best option considering the good XDA support and ok camera. But it is still not nice enough for me to spend the 399€ that it would cost (no used phones around here in Germany).
So, I think I have to live with my S6 a little longer. Currently searching the best ROM and kernel to get at least the best out of the battery that is possible.
Most likely something what is NOT from Samsung but I'll see...
I'm quite open to different brands since anyone can create a great device.
For now I'm thinking about either Pixel or even an iPhone (I can barely believe I said it )
if ever i leave my s6 and samsung,i want to own iphone again, maybe 6s plus or 7 if only have money,in most situation i always found that iphone has lesser factory defect than samsung, and the updates is awesome, very fluid and optimized o.s ,downside is very expensive, cant afford ?

From S6 to S8. Is it worth the upgrade?

Hey guys.
I have the Galaxy S6 and I'm wondering if it is worth to upgrade from S6 to S8.
I've been using the S6 for quite some time, and now they launched Android Nougat (7.0) to the Galaxy S6, which I am currently using the official version.
But, I am wondering if I should upgrade to the Galaxy S8 (Non Plus) variant.
I'm in love with s8's screen.
If you can, please post a "reason" why I should or not be upgrading.
Thanks!

Better SOC, better graphics, better screen, more ram, more memory 64gb, sd card, better battery, better camera front and back, usb C, better performance overall......BUT if you didn't see all this already and you're still in doubt, might be that it doesn't worth the upgrade for you.
I did this. Battery almost 2x, Speed great, too.

As the title says I upgraded from the s6 edge and let me tell you it is worth the upgrade! :good:
Not least of all the S8 is waterproof, having paid £250 to repair a water damaged s6 edge last year i think its worth upgrading for this reason alone.
I like the fact the finger print scanner is on the back - it never made sense to me that it was on the front in the first place.
Face unlocker is fast to react.
And I am just chumping at the bit to get a DEX like dock (however at this point not willing to pay £110 for it).
Interesting comments.
I am really tempted into upgrading it. Since my S6 sometimes struggle when I'm scrolling on Chrome or Facebook, and I'm too far down.
I think it is time for that upgrade!
Is the battery really enough? I mean.. 3000 mAH on the S8.

Battery life has been a mixed bag for me - I'm not quite seeing as good a result as I've seen many post but it's likely due to varying conditions. It definitely gets better life than my S6 - I wouldn't make it to Noon with that and I start my day, off the charger at 430am. With the S8, I get through the entire day, no problem but might need a hit from the fast charger if I do some browsing after dinner...

Well you can upgrade but i recommend waiting for another phone with the same SOC...
My dad bought the S8 and is pretty meh...Narrow design, same screen as the s6 just bigger and slightly higher res which makes it looks strange...camera is the same as an S6 on good light conditions and slightly better on dark conditions...Figerprint positioning is absurd...Battery is not that good...SOC is newer but you wont notice any difference unless you try hard...And the price is way too high for whats is worth...
I dont want to start a new thread but i am wondering the same but i am coming from a oneplus one.. again is their any bonus in upgrading.. and how is development for samsung devices
i went from s6 edge + to s8. Very happy so far. the form factor fits better in the hand, software is fine. I like the back being glass. good feel overall.
A BIG YES. I upgrade from a s7 edge and to me it was so worth it
If you like the S6 and want to stay with Samsung, I'd say yes. Otherwise, I'd say wait until more info is available on the Google Pixel 2.
It's such a large upgrade from the S6 it's silly to even have to talk about all the reasons why. For comparison, the S8+ made the S7 Edge seem very dated. There is no comparison, unless you like old, slow phones with far inferior displays, memory size, camera..... I could go on. Not even in the same ballpark. By far the best phone made to date - S8/S8+. That changes every 6 months or so with a new phone taking the crown, but right now this is the top dog.
Agree, S8&S8+ are top-of-the-foodchain!
How are the lags on the S8? Because on the S6 when I'm scrolling in chrome or facebook I get lags. Usual android thing. That's what making me wonder if I should wait iphone 8 or get the galaxy s8. Btw, I don't plan going to Google Pixel 2 because I like the Samsung devices. I've always had Samsung phones. Tried Nexus once but I'm not a fan of stock android.
Upgraded today to the Grey/silver version from S6.
Ordered awesome spigen case too.
Role on Friday.

Zero lag in anything I have done on my S8+. Smoothest, fastest phone I have ever used.
I went from s6 Edge to S8. I think it's worth it. The battery is much better. Bigger screen, not as wide so easier to hold. It's pretty better all around. If you got nougat on your s6 then the software experience will not feel drastically different. Haven't really tested the camera head to head yet.

I have to disagree with you on a few points:
"far inferior displays" - Just because the S8 has a more futuristic look with its smaller bezels and increased height over the S6 I don't see it being fair to consider the S6 to be far inferior. The S6 featured an incredible screen at its time, and compared to alot of flagships out there it still is an amazing screen anno 2017! (pixeldensity is still better on the S6 vs the S8 by the way)
"memory size" - Just because the S8 features 1GB more, it does not mean that you actually use it. Just because it looks better on paper does not make it essential in daily usage. 4GB future proof? Yes! Absolutely necessary at this moment? Probably not.
"camera" - If you are talking about the front facing camera, then yes probably you are right. The rear camera however is only marginaly improved over the S6.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that the S8 beats the S6 in all of those points, but I think its actual difference in daily usage is to be argued whether the TS needs to upgrade or not
From S6 Edge to S8 is a perfect upgrade at all levels. I gave S6 to dad and I am using S8

How long till S8 becomes too old?

Hello XDA Friends!
I wonder how long (months, years) Samsung Galaxy S8 will be good enough to have that phone.
What do You think folks?
Probably the battery will quickly become a problem.
Do You think it would be a wise to sell S8 now and in 2 years buy a newer Samsung?
I barley use S8, mainly to take photos record videos.
Do You think that Samsung has since 2018 to much competition and I could buy a decent phone from Huawei, Honor or Xiaomi without spending a fortune on Samsung.
I don't play games BTW.
Please share with me Your thoughts.
I have mine (s8+) more than a year, use it very intensive (work, including Dex, in the car, private, gaming) - and I'm still very happy with it. Battery is a slight issue, from day one (but I come from a Huawei, and they are champion in battery!), but don't see any sign of battery getting worse.
When s9 came out I have looked at it, but didn't see any added value to my s8; maybe the s10 to come will be my next phone?
Short answer: I don't see any signs of s8 becoming 'too old' yet. My 2p.

My 2p.

I can see: two weeks after buying S8 the batter started to be shortly like in older Galaxy models.
That is how Samsung will push Us to buy new flagships cause a few years with that batttery will be a torture to use it with old (S8) phone

Nothings ever too old either it still works or it dont...I wouldnt hesitate to use any "old" device right now if it works good. Even right now I got a note 3 that runs beautifully.....But at the same time I hve had my S8 since december it feels "old" to me
I give it until late 2019 to early 2020.

galaxy note 3
Software wise:
If we compare s8 to other galaxy devices,
Note 9 has no exclusive software features (apart from Spen related) that excited me.
I believe it will become old once Note 10 is released.
And s8 will become too old once Note 11 is released. Thanks to no treble and only 2 major android updates.
I still believe Pixel Android will take couple of more years to catch up to Samsung Experience's features.
Performance wise, I don't mind my apps opening 2-3 seconds slower.
Hardware wise:
We will see what s10 and s11 brings to the table in terms of battery and ram.
64GB storage will be plenty for me and we got SD expansion.
5.8" QHD+ screen size is just perfect. not too big not too small.
Camera, meh, even in 2020 the mid range phones won't catch up to s8. s6 camera is still better than most mid range phones today.
Speaker, sure stereo is better but i prefer earphones and it has headphone jack.
