TWRP Loop after attempted restore. - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

I have the Oneplus 5 , been playing with various ROMS recently. After install and tweaking a few ROMs, I created restore backups of a few them using TWRP.
I tried to restore one ROM using TWRP (1st time wiping cache and Dalvik; second by doing a factory reset) loop start into TWRP. I then tried to restore the backups for the other ROMs I had, all ended with the same resulting TWRP boot loop .
I reinstalled the ROM from scratch without a problem, boots fine. Able to restore app via google and TB, but I'm wondering why the problem with TWRP and what if any, is the work around?

What version of TWRP are you using ? Because the open source one is known to fail on attempting full data restore ! But the backup are still very much valid backup.
So if what I just said fit your current situation, try restoring with the official one, it should go swell

Thanks, It was the open source version. I used that one because of the fire and brimstone warnings about using the official one. I'll copy over the back ups, flash the official one and let you know how it goes.
Edit and solved: Updated TWRP to the Official version, restore now works like a charm. Many thanks @ liloow

Awesome ! Glad I could help you can still use the open source one for everything else. I use the open source version for my day to day activities !
I keep both images on my phone and flash the official one just to restore data !

Help - i9505 unable to restore from CWM backup in Lollipop

Hi all, I've got a stock i9505, rooted, with Philz Touch recovery & Lollipop (I9505XXUHOB7_I9505BTUHOB4_BTU).
I made a (no errors reported) backup & loaded up Resurection Remix ROM (Resurrection-Remix-LP-v5.5.3-20150804-jfltexx) and GApps (gapps-lp-20141109-signed) and all seemed OK.
I then decided to go back to Lollipop & thats when things started falling apart - I did what seemed a successful restore from the backup but when it rebooted, it initially gave the error 'Inconsistent System UID' and about fixing permissions so I flashed TWRP & fixed permissions & went back to Pilz & tried another restore but ever since, it went into a boot loop (I think - I'm a bit new at this) at the point where the Samsung logo is still up & the stars are pinging out. Never moves on from this.
I then thought I'd take it back to stock & re-flashed Lollipop, did the root & reloaded Philz Touch & tried another restore - same thing.
I then tried CWM to see if that would do a decent restore but still no joy.
I wonder if my backup has been corrupted?
I can get it up & running but I'd like to be able to access all my backed up data etc.
I'm not knowledgeable enough to to a custom restore (in Philz) as I'm not sure what to restore & what to leave!
Can anyone help?
Kind regards,
Nic

You can always copy the backup to your computer and extract the files you need.

Thanks for the reply Lennyz - I have copied the backup to my PC but when I try to extract or look at any of the .tar files, they all say they are unknown format or damaged (hence my thought on perhaps the backup is corrupt?)
That's assuming that I can use Winzip or similar to look inside the .tar files?
Aah, out of the 3 data ext.tar files, I can only extract stuff from one of them (and that still comes up with a message about unexpected end of archive?

[Q] N910G won't boot after TWRP restore?

Hi All,
Just wondering what's going on with my phone - it's a Galaxy Note 4 SM-N910G with Optus Australia.
Here's the situation:
I rooted my phone using Chainfire method from 5.1.1 Optus firmware.
Then, I installed TWRP, backed up all partitions (INCLUDING EFS).
After that, installed Cyanogenmod. Holy damn, I need to go back to stock...
so...
I booted back into TWRP
I reset phone as usually would to restore/install ROM.
I restored firmware backup in TWRP.
Reboot to system
-- BOOTLOOP --
happens every time i try to restore, and the only way I can use my phone right now is to reflash Cyanogenmod 12.1 nightlies onto it - which have problems (such as I cannot reboot with CM12.1 because if I do after installing it, the phone app breaks and I cannot get past anything because of toast message "com.android.phone" has stopped..., so then only way to get it to work again is to reflash CM12.1 again - this happens about twice daily...)
-- -- PLEASE HELP!
What happens to TWRP backups that mean i cannot restore my stock backup without it bootlooping? and why can devs not post a clean stock flashable ZIP copy of stock firmwares? Its great having all these mods, but how about something that doesn't require umpteen thousand bloody applications to reflash your phone with? Whatever happened to a simple ZIP? when I see ZIPs, devs see thanks buttons being pushed!
-- THANKS

One possible solution is to flash the appropriate stock rom via odin. After booting, install twrp and root your phone. After this you can restore your previously saved stock rom via twrp.

Sorry no help from me but I have a similar problem. At some point mine quit booting to TWRP and I got a huge OTA update a few days ago and every time I try to boot into recovery it ends up in Stock Recovery only after going to little android saying installing updates(it fails & eventually goes to stock recovery.) I did a reset and still have 5.1.1 installed and still have the same behavior.
I have the professional version of the unified toolkit and it says if it is still booting into stock recovery select options 7, 3 which I did but it didn't fix the problem. I think what's getting me is it thinks there are still system updates to install.

Moto x pure XT1575 What am i doing wrong?!

I bought this phone used and the person who had it before me it rooted and installed some of different ROMs on it. After getting my used moto x pure 2015 running android 6.0. I booted it up and tested all the functions (including downloading a few apps) Wi-Fi, camera, audio/charging jacks ext. Everything worked fine. So did normal factory reset (not using TWRP) just to make sure everything was clean before using it as my daily. Then, (BUM BUM BUM!) when I tried to start downloading all my apps. None of them would download even though the Wi-Fi was working. Error 492 I think.
I started trying custom ROMs because I was having two big issues (apps not downloading and incoming call not bringing up accept/decline screen) with my stock rom. and wanted to fix those issues with a fresh stock image.
This is all new to me and has not been as easy as anticipated. If anyone knows a clean factory image I could flash or a fail proof fix to error 492 that would be helpful. I really just want to return to fully working Motorola stock android, but the files I have used haven’t fixed the issue. I have searched for a factory image without finding one…
Is there a way to flash the Motorola image through TRWP?
Otherwise, maybe you can help me with my flashing method, and maybe tell me what I am doing wrong. I tried to flash multiple stock images all with the same issue. I have also tried to flash Resurrection Remix, and Brocken OS, both having resulted in a bootloop. I am starting to think I have done something wrong. The steps I have taken so far have been these:
My bootloader is unlocked status code 3.
My phone is not rooted. Do I need root?
First I downloaded adb and fastboot.
Then I flashed TWRP (3.0.2).
I never installed the official Motorola stock image because flashing it from fast boot wouldn’t work and it couldn’t be flashed with TWRP because it is a .gz not a .zip. (I knew a .gz needs to be flashed with fastboot but I knew TWRP was easer so I didn’t fuss with it)
After flashing TWRP to my phone, I downloaded (yes, I checked the md5) the various ROMs to my computer then transfered them to my phone via micro SD card.
Here are the file’s names if that matters:
moto_x_pure_edition_stock_x1575_mphs24.49-18-3_v1-odexed
(booted and Wi-Fi but play store won’t download apps)
moto_x_pure_edition_stock_x1575_mph24.49-18_v1-odexed
(booted but no Wi-Fi)
Broken-v4.9.1-clark-6.0.1-OFFICIAL-20160824 (with Broken_gapps_lp5.1.x_09172015)
(Brocken was the only non-stock that got past boot, but I still couldn’t get past set up without an error and never made it to the system.)
ResurrectionRemix-N-v5.8.0-20161220-clark (7.1 gapps failed to flash but I booted it anyway.)
(boot loop after both of my tries)
I got Wi-Fi working on one of the above stock ROMs (so I KNOW it works) but couldn’t even turn Wi-Fi on in all the others.
The method I used to flash all of the above files in TWRP was:
Wipe
Full wipe (davlik cache, data, system, cache)
(used for RR and Brocken)
Factory reset (using TWRP) (davlik cache, data , cache)
Used for the stock ROMs or even after flashing .zip file I got the error: no OS installed.
Install
Select file of ROM flash (gapps if needed) and flash
I can’t remember which ones but on some of them after flashing I again did a factory reset.
Then I rebooted
Thanks for reading. Sorry it was so long. I tried to add as much useful information as possible. Hopefully someone smarter than me will see my error(s) and help me get my phone into fully working order.

I'm having a similar issue. Tried the TruPure rom but I want to switch back to stock. If I do a full wipe, would I be able to use the files that Motorola provides on their website and flash those throught fastboot? Or through TWRP? Any chance you have a link to a guide on how to do the latter option (installing through TWRP)? I'm just trying to get my device back to 100% stock so that I can receive OTA.

Thank you for sharing that link. I think I get it but it seems too easy considering what I've tried so far. Just to make sure I get it:
I should download the odexed rom, go to twrp and wipe data, cache and dalvik then flash the odexed rom through the install function? And thats it? I've literally tried a ton of stuff so if this takes care of it, this is great!

Yes, also wipe system, make a backup before If you want, but remember, for the OTAs support you need yo flash the stock recovery via fastboot. Good luck.

This got me back to stock! You are the real MVP.
So I remember seeing a recovery.img file in the factory image that motorola posted on its site. Does it have to be a specific stock recovery or do I need a specific one to match with the file I just installed?
thanks again

So I'm on stock build 49-18-8 and flashed the recovery from 49-18-3. I went into fastboot and selected recovery. I got the android character with an !
I then did the power button and volume up and got into stock android recovery. Am I supposed to see the android character with ! each time I try to reach the recovery menu? Just wondering if I did this correctly.
Thanks again for pointing me to these resources!

I have problems installing roms on my Le 1s X500.

Hello and thanks for reading.
Well, I installed the TWRP on my Letv 1S X500 to flash the gapps and can use play services but as I had the recovery installed I wanted to test some customs rom. The problem is that I can go back to my stock rom or even other rom. Actually I could installed other rom but I can not do it more. (First I installed RR, after some hours many apps stop so I have to make wipes (Cache, dalvik, System and data) three times and I could installed lineage OS, but I can not use Snapchat so I wanted to install the S26 again so I tried to use the backup but the TWRP does not find it, it just does not appear. I did two backups, one when I had the S26 and other when I had RR and any of both appear when I press restore. I also tried to install the rom, not make a restore but, it says This package is for "X3" devices; this is a "x3". error 7. I already did the trick of deleting the semicolon or all the lines with the "assert" word but it is the same.
I have thought on installing the stock recovery and rename the s26 to "update.zip" but I do not know if it is just like that.
What could I do to fix this problem?
I want to have the stock rom, but if the problem with snapchat has a solution I could keep using LineageOS.
I have this recovery 3.1.0-0
The first backup was with TWRP 3.0.1 and the second one with my current TWRP 3.1.0-0
I am downloading other stock rom to prove, the 17S. I hope this work.
I just know, I am not a root user, I have not installed superSU. Is it important?

No, it is not important.
Seems like you changed twrp, to restore the backup created by one version of twrp you need the same twrp to restore.
Hello,
Did you solve a problem?
I have same problem.

TWRP Loop, again

After reading up and being waived off the Official TWRP I originally used the open source (which I cant find on my phone or desktop) TWRP for my recovery.
I've been playing around with different ROMS on my Oneplus5 and ran into a TWRP loop after restoring from one ROM to another. It was suggested, and I followed the advice, to flash the Official TWRP and no more TWRP loop.
A week or so later, trying to restore from the Resurrection ROM to xXx ROM and I'm back in a TWRP boot loop.
I've tried different wipes before restoring and still looped.
Tried flashing this version of TWRP to recovery https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/development/twrp-oneplus-5-wip-t3626134 and it was no help.
Any suggestions?
Try flashing no verity op5.zip
I don't think official TWRP can restore backups that include system data on the OP5 without going into a bootloop. Blu Spark TWRP works much better. I've never gotten a boot loop restoring any backup I made with that version of TWRP.

Thanks, it was getting a bit frustrating and before your solutions posted, in the interim I used Method 2 from here:https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/guide-fix-twrp-recovery-script-loop-t3649727 loading the stock bootloader wiped my device clean (all pics, my files, my TB folder gone) but I was able to load a ROM and boot (I hate Goggle, they can f up just about anything, but that god for their backup/restore, it got me up and running from scratch quickly ). I will give the blu spark a shot and @ se7ensde take a look at your suggestion.
It is a shame that TWRP restore is such a problem, and a random one at that. I have restored from ROM to ROM to compare them without an incident until....
