This is not possible, correct? There is no IR "receiver" on the unit IIRC.
This will determine whether I put the Ouya in the main TV room where it's used by my wife and parents when they're over babysitting. Right now, I have the Apple TV2 and it's programmed in my Harmony so it's easy for them to use.
So, just to be sure, this can't be programmed with a universal remote?
There's no IR receiver, so the only think that comes to mind is a USB IR receiver, even then dunno what the remote would be able to actually control.
has anyone gotten cec to work with the ouya. there was a discussion on the ouya devs forum about it. cant post the link apparently
I'm curious if this would work. It's a universal remote with bluetooth for a ps3
can't post a url, but the product is SMK-Link Blu-Link - Universal remote control - Bluetooth/infrared

I have a Logitech Harmony One and have the IR to Bluetooth adapter Logitech made for communication with the PS3.
I don't have my OUYA yet, but when I do get one, it will be the first thing that I attempt to use. It only simulates PS3 controller inputs, and from what I understand, PS3 controllers work with the OUYA? Obviously would have no clue how to pair the adapter with the OUYA, but will be fun to tinker nevertheless.
Regardless, for XBMC purposes, imo nothing beats Yatse on my Nexus 4. Sure it would be nice to have all-in-one with the Harmony, but Yatse is just too nice, esp with the plugins (SMS popups on the TV and auto-pause/resume for phone calls). So not end of the world, but still would be nice to see if I could with the Harmony. At very least I'd expect someone to come out with drivers and a usb dongle.

Why did you pick this off-brand PS3 remote? The Sony branded PS3 remote has the same capabilities (bluetooth and IR), but is cheaper than SMK. The Sony branded remote is $18 right now on Amazon. The SMK one is like $30, Amazon and Target.
I don't have either device. But I have a generic IR remote with a USB receiver, and on my computer it acts as a keyboard input. I'm hoping it works on the Ouya. I think I can remap the keys using XBMC.

I have something similar myself. USB IR receiver with a remote that has a "touch disc" on it.
The device actually shows up on Windows as a Universal HID device that works as both a mouse & keyboard.
The media keys and stuff are mapped really oddly, but if you're gonna use it to drive XBMC, you can keymap all that crap without issue.
Then you'll have to make sure you put the receiver where you can get Line Of Sight.
Honestly I am kinda on the fence about this crap at present. I HAVE my Ouya, and it plays games and junk well, but I have a couple issues that I am sort of waiting on:
-No DTS / DD audio passthrough via HDMI to a receiver
-No HDMI-CEC
-Ouya & other game controllers only work as a very limited/terrible keyboard device in current XBMC builds
-No surround sound output from Ouya system-wide (output currently "stuck" on stereo)
-Can't change Ouya output resolution (currently stuck @ 1080P) (My projector wants 720P or 1080i to do SBS 3D content)
Some / all of these are supposedly going to be fixed in software eventually and all are things that the Ouya hardware CAN do. So far my short term lazy solution has just been to use YATSE on my 7" tablet (my main mobile device), which works fine for XBMC needs. I haven't really bothered to fully set up my XBMC stuff (like my library and a nice skin and junk) because I "need" audio passthrough for it to feel like a fully baked solution I will use all the time for movies and junk.

How is HDMI-CEC important if the Ouya already acts as the HTPC? Maybe you had something in mind that was different than what I was thinking of? Isn't CEC just a way for the TV device to control the source via the HDMI connection? Can't you just control the Ouya directly for whatever you wanted the CEC control to be?
Personally, a simple remote (like the Sony PS3 remote) that has IR to turn the TV on/off, and bluetooth to control the Ouya (pause/play/select) is most of what I'm looking for. Using a tablet or smartphone seem to not be as convenient for me.

To me, the required features are to have IR (to control the TV) and bluetooth (to control the Ouya). That'll keep you from needing to hold two remotes.
If anyone has the PS3 remote and an Ouya, I'd be interested in a detail review of how they work together with XBMC. Particularly, how you navigate the menu structure with the arrow keys. It would be nice to not have to use a coffee table mouse for XBMC.

I do and as far as xbmc navigation goes all the major functions work except for the pause and play button and volume but thats not a big deal since its programed to my tv. Navigating through the ouya menu isnt as good since the enter button doesnt work. Also if you have xbmc set to launch at startup and use the ps3 remote that will cause xbmc to crash initially and using the power button to turn the tv off causes the ps3 remote to lose connection to the ouya so yuo'll have to resart the ouya for it to work again. One last thing is you'll need this app to pair it since ouya cant do it out of the box https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sImNvbS5qcG4uZnJvbnRpYS53YWthLkJsdWV0b290aCJd

Am I correct in thinking the PS3 remote connects to the Ouya via bluetooth? So on the PS3 remote, the power button doesn't just send the power IR signal to the TV, but also acts as a soft-off to turn off the PS3 remote? Is that why the remote is losing its connection to the Ouya

yes its bluetooth, It seems that the power button also shuts off the remote. Its definitly not ready for day to day yet (I just went to use it and it caused xbmc to crash)

Thanks for the heads up. That's the kind of operational thing that makes a huge difference in how a device can be used, but you'd never know it from reading the spec sheet.
My plan for the Ouya was to use the PS3 remote, but the disconnect issue might be a big deal. I have a bluetooth mouse (microsoft brand) that I know goes to sleep when not in use, but it wakes up fast and connects fast. The sleep function is really not an issue for that bluetooth mouse.
has anyone had any luck (or ideas) on using a universal remote (i.e. logitech harmony family) to replace the stock nexus player remote?
in my view the remote that ships with the nexus player is the weakest link in the product. with no volume controls i am forced to hold two remotes while i use this unit. and i am constantly hitting the "home" button accidentally, which boots me out of whatever i was doing. i expect that replacing the mic/speech capability on a universal remote won't be possible, but am really hoping that there is at least a way to get the d-pad + home + back buttons mapped to a universal remote for basic use cases.
in particular, i am wondering if the bluetooth support that logitech harmony remotes can somehow be made to learn those buttons? or, worst case, perhaps a USB IR receiver dongle -- but i've already went looking for android USB IR receiver dongle support and am yet to find anything.

I couldn't agree more about needing to integrate the Nexus into the livingroom. I don't know about using the bluetooth support for the harmony, but I use a Flirc USB IR receiver (its currently on a Black Friday sale for $15) that plugs in to the Nexus Player (via OTG cable and, in my case, a powered hub). There's a bit of setup required on both the pc for the Flirc and, of course, adding a new remote to your Harmony profile, but it works great. The only issue remaining is finding the correct key to have Flirc send for the Home button, but that'll be solved within a day or two. My Harmony 650 is setup not just for the Nexus Player, but also XBMC/kodi, so it controls both completely.
As for speech, I use the android tv remote app from my phone since I almost always have that with me. Works a treat.
i can confirm this approach as i have it all working now. elrondolio provided links with all the necessary information, but as someone that was new to flirc there were still a few things i had to figure out to put it all together. here is a distillation of what you need to know if you want to use flirc for IR control of the nexus player via a logitech harmony remote (in my case, the old but trusty harmony 650):
1) buy the flirc USB IR receiver dongle, still on sale for $14.95, not sure how much longer this will last.
2) buy a micro-USB adapter for flirc. this one works great and fits next to my HDMI cable, but be mindful that some HDMI cables with fat heads might crowd the adpater. costs $2 plus shipping.
3) add the nexus player to your harmony remote as a "Media Center PC > Flirc > XBMC" device as per these instructions. setup button mappings (as you prefer) that you will use for nexus player "back" and "home" buttons. in my case, i assigned the XBMC "back" command to the "previous channel" button on my remote. harmony remotes don't have "home" buttons and neither does the XBMC profile, so you need to pick something arbitrary here. i decided to assign the "PageUp" command to my harmony's "Menu" button, with the intention of mapping that command to the the corresponding keyboard combo for nexus player's "home" command in flirc (more on this in step 6). save and update your harmony remote with the new config.
4) plug your flirc+adapter into the nexus player and you should see partial functionality start working immediately. arrow keys and selection will work, back and home will not.
5) install the flirc desktop app for windows/mac/linux using these instructions.
6) plug flirc into your desktop computer and start the app to reprogram keys. reprogram as follows:
- switch to keyboard view by selecting Controllers > Full Keyboard.
- un-map the "back" button, since we need to re-map it. do this by clicking "erase" and then pressing the "back" button on your harmony remote (probably mapped to your "previous" button; check your harmony button mappings to confirm).
- map your harmony "previous" button to the "escape" key. do this by clicking on the "escape" key on the flirc keyboard image, and then pressing your "previous" button on the harmony remote (which sends the "back" command). the flirc app should say that the key was successfully mapped.
- map your harmony "menu" button to the "alt+escape" key. do this by first clicking the "alt" key on the flirc keyboard image, then clicking the "escape" key (both should now be highlighted), and then pressing your "menu" button on the harmony remote (which sends the "PageUp" command). the flirc app should say that the key was successfully mapped.
7) plug flirc back into your nexus player and you should now be able to fully navigate the nexus player UI.
there is one significant caveat that i have still not yet resolved, which is that the back and home button mappings do not necessarily work as expected under all apps. for example, the "back" button did not behave as expected in the TED app, and the "home" button doesn't work in XBMC. if/when i am able to resolve these minor issues i will post more updates here.
Nice write-up @jaypm. Mapping "esc" to the button on the harmony you want for back works fine as it makes "back" work in most Nexus apps. For kodi, however, you'll need to swap what "esc" and "backspace" do. You can do so in kodi by going in to "Programs", "Program Add-ons", "Get More..." then choose to install "Keymap Editor". Go back a level and click "Keymap Editor" to open it. Click the "Edit" option then "Global" and finally "Navigation". Scroll down to "Back" and, with a keyboard attached to your Nexus, map the "esc" key. Next click the "Previous Menu" and map the "backspace" key from your keyboard.
Now your chosen "Back" button on the remote works everywhere, not only for other Nexus apps, but kodi as well.
Menu has yet to be solved properly but as you say, "alt-esc" does work in some situations. Hopefully more eyes in the flirc forums will get a solution sooner rather than later. I'd suggest all those with a Flirc visit and post there.
I was able to get my Harmony Hub setup using the method at this link...
http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Harmo...and-Harmony/m-p/1337271/highlight/true#M16174
Seems to be that the NP and activity needs to be added from the phone app for the Bluetooth sync to initialize on the hub? I first tried adding everything from myharmony.com and then couldn't figure out how to start the Bluetooth sync. The instructions at that link did get me working 100% though. Oh and as a side note, the "Media Center" command acts as the "home" button on the NP.
Thank you. Worked perfectly. Now I can control the Nexus Player with my Harmony 550. I mapped the Back to Exit on the remote, and Home to Menu on the remote. Also set these two buttons on the programmable softkeys so they are visible.
I have no idea how or why, but my Sony Bravia remote controls the Nexus Player.
Did you ever figure out why back and home work in some apps but not others? Once I go into Netflix, I'm stuck.

I am using the Logitech Harmony Smart remote control.
This does work with the Nexus Player, and it works pretty well. It doesn't do the voice recognition, but I haven't found I use that feature. The smart remote is a pretty solid addition to the living room. I have it set up to switch between my DirectTV DVR, FireStick and Nexus Player. The DirectTV and Firestick route through the AMP, but the Nexus has to go straight to the TV, due to issues with HDCP when routed through the Amp.
Hope that helps.
Shoot, it would be nice to have a bluetooth connection to the NP. Unfortunately, I use iRule and the iTach so Infrared is how I would get it to work. Maybe I will look into the Harmony ultimate home though . . .

ALT + ESC was the key combination I was using before to act as the HOME button but it didn't work inside of all apps. I recently found out that ALT + TAB works in all cases so that's the ideal key combination to use.
Nexus Player is a sad/simple/boring device. Its remote is really silly and useless. Anyone who have used an Air mouse type remote (Lg Magic Remote or Samsun's one) knows how comfortable it is to have a pointer on the screen and move the hand to reach the cursor where you need. Google decided to use a simply remove which basically is a left/right/left/left/down/down/down until you reach your option.
I've bought a USB OTG cable and connected my mouse. While the cursor is moving on the screen and it works on some apps, in most it does work. So for instance, on a game I can't click on the buttons... Is there a way to make the mouse clicks on all apps ?
Also, some apps which are forced for portrait orientation, will be displayed lying as the tv is 1920x1080. Any way to force the orientation of apks ?
Thanks.
I've had this problem too. Apparently some developers code in touches and/or mouse clicks, and some only code in the touch command. That is why some games aren't working for you.
You've got two options, either complain to the development team to add mouse clicks (which I'm told should be an easy thing to do) or use the DroidMote app by Zulu.
Thank you @midnightzak for making it clear to me. It seems that even the games from the Google Play for android TV are not working as supposed. For instance I installed Minion Rush (which is officially supported) and after it installed on start, it ask me to enter my age but I can't enter it because when moving around with remove for the Age editbox and clicking ok button does nothing, no keyboard popup. Tried it with controller too, same thing.
Another short question. On Chromecast on my LG smart TV I had Simplink enabled. Not sure if because of this, but when I started to cast a video from my phone, the tv switches from cable input to chromecast input. This does not work for Nexus Player, I need to manually switch input to HDMI port of the player. Is this normal ?
I have a magic motion remote for my LG tv, which is basically an air mouse remote. LG firmware has an option to control other devices connected through HDMI with the remote and when I try to add a new device, I get all sorts of Box sets from different producers. I was wondering if there is a way to make the remote work on nexus player.
The nexus player doesn't officially support HDMI CEC which is the protocol required for the auto switching of inputs to work. It's also what would make your remote work unfortunately.
I have a LG "smart" TV as well and at first the Nexus Player did not appear to support the expected HDMI-CEC functionality (input switching and magic remote passthrough). On LG "smart" TVs, you have to re-enable HDMI-CEC for that port when you switch devices. This is also sometimes a very annoying setting to find if you haven't touched it in a while.
@opticron so you say that you LG TV does work with Nexus player and also you can use the magic remote for it ? Can you tell me some more details on how to enable the HDMI-CEC on the tv for the player HDMI port ?
My other concern: should the cable be of any special type to support CEC ?
Later edit: I have replaced the HDMI cable I had with an newer cheap one. The older one did not work with simplink enabled, while the new one does. I can use the lg remote to navigate around the nexus player. The cursor does not trigger any action (too bad) but up/down/left/right/ok/back works from the magic remote.
I've tried the Nyko playpad pro and it's hot garbage. I've ordered 2 of them and they've both arrived dead. won't power on or anything. I've read a lot of reviews on it and see that you have to be lucky to get a working on. I'm looking for a bluetooth controller that works and a way to reconfigure the buttons on it. Is this possible? I want to use the controller for my Shield Tablet as well as the Shield TV. Someone thought it was a good idea to not allow you to remap sprint and crouch on DOOM 3, which is super infuriating.
If you are willing to root, there are a lot of options. Honestly, the sixaxis controller app and any Playstation controller are about the best configuration you can find. You can map the controller buttons to literally any key press that android can register, including touching the screen. It also let's you emulate a mouse with either joystick and toggle it on and off. Something I wish was built into the Shield controller.
But, if root isn't an option, you could try the MOGA controller with this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.sandstorm.mogaime.gui&hl=en.
I hear MOGA makes decent controllers, but I have never used one personally.
I just picked this thing up and it's pretty amazing, kind of impressed by how well everything works.
I'm not able to get it to pair via Bluetooth or the shield accessory pairing but it comes with a USB dongle that works.
I've been able to program the volume up and volume down buttons to work with my soundbar and the home button is programmable but I can't seem to program it.
I've got the 2017 pro model and have tried using the home button on the game controller and the regular remote to program it. There's also no back button but there are plenty of programmable buttons I could program that one too.
Anyone got any ideas? I'd hate to have to return this thing since the air mouse and voice search buttons both work really well.
