I just got the 4.2.2 update last night and I immediately noticed the volume when I am talking on the phone is much lower. It honestly sounded like I had it on 50%, but when I checked it was still at full. Is anyone else experiencing this? I can only confirm this issue on the earpiece volume when making a call, but its VERY annoying.

+1, the volume during calls is lower
Curious, do you guys hear a buzzing static noise from the phone while NOT on a call? Screen on or off, shouldn't matter.

Reflash the whole 4.2.2 factory image in fastboot mode. Downloadlink https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_zuNWpIf1ujTzFkUkF5OWdkUmc/edit?usp=sharing. That should fix your problems. Backup your files first as it will wipe the sdcard.

Is that a known method to fix the low volume, or is 4.2.2 just "tweaked" poorly by Google?

Usualy it solves a lot of problems caused by OTA updates, try it.

I am not rooted so I can't make a Nandroid backup. That means I will lose all my data which would be bothersome.
Nandroid doesn't back-up your ext sd.
Copy your data from sd to your pc

Thats a good point! However, before going through the whole wiping process I am hoping someone else can confirm if that method will actually fix the problem.
I flashed 4.2.2 that way. Not had any problems with sound.
Now i'm on PA rom. Also no problems at all

AW: 4.2.2 update made my volume much lower?
Hi, I also have a big issue regarding the sound respectively the equalizer. Its important for me to have the possability to change bass settings while listening to Internet radio. The app I usually use is yourmuze. The stock equalizer only works with Google play music, but not with yourmuze. I contacted the yourmuze-support, but they had no clue... I also tried different radio-players, but it seems, that other apps than Google play music are not supported. I tried CM 10.1, but same issue there. I also installed another kernel. I'm currently on stock (rooted) with awesame beats, which works only with Google play music. What the hell is blocking the sound options? It really sucks and I'll sell my N4, if I can't solve this problem soon. I use my phone as a musicplayer min. 1 hour per day. Could it be a hardware problem? I don't think so, because awesame beats works perfect with Google play music. Maybe one of you guys can help me?

Unfortunately I tried the solution listed here and that did not change the low in call volume I am experiencing since doing the OTA to 4.2.2. Does anyone else have other suggestions? It appears as if the volume "boosting" apps on the market are not compatible with JB. Am I out of luck here???
I too am unrooted and upgraded to 4.2.2 and have noticed the same thing as you OP. It is bad on speaker phone as well. To those that flashed the factory image via bootloader as a fix is it more because of the issues around OTA or because you suspect a bad flash? In other words, if I am going to go through the trouble of backing everything up and wiping, I may as well root and flash a custom rom/recovery. Any thoughts?
I applied the 4.2.2 update earlier and also experienced a noticeable drop in call volume. In fact, it’s been so bad that I can barely hear anything at all when I’m somewhere noisy, like a coffee shop.

Agreed, I have a hard time talking on the phone if I am on the street now since I simply can't hear the other person.....
BUMP, hoping we can get some attention to this issue.
Same here
+1 Volume is so low that I'm having trouble talking on the phone. Both regular and speakerphone affected.
Try this experiment. When in a call slide the volume to both extremes and then adjust to what you want.
After my update I couldn't raise volume, it was like it was uncalibrated. So I had it at 75% and when I went "up" the volume didn't change. By going all the way to minimum and back to maximum seemed to "calibrate" my adjustment and I can raise and lower call volume reliably now.

Hey
Over the last few days my phone has been making what sounds like a notification sound, it has two parts, a warbling sound followed by a beep. It doesn't sound like any notification from an app I use and the sound isn't in the default list of sounds or in media/audio/notifications/ and it continues to happen even if I have no apps running.
Has anyone had anything similar happen or know of a way to view what apps would permission to make notification sounds?
Thanks
Dan
Are you running stock or custom rom? If it's custom, just try to reflash it. Make sure to wipe cache/dalvik cache.

Stock rom.
I've stopped as many apps as possible and It just won't stop it.
I keep trying to record a snippet of the sound but predictably after going for about 10 minutes non stop it's now packed it in.
Probably the NFC sound.

My WiFi only 2012 Nexus 7 has started doing this also the past 2 days. I'm running stock 4.4.2 and have been going through turning off anything the might generate a notification and it still does it. On or off charger, full battery, cool to the touch, screen on or sleep, no alarms set, no appointments, no chats and basically nothing common or easily overlooked.
I thought for a second it was related to juice defender, I'm still exploring that possibility. Do you have JD on your device? I'm going to uninstall it on my device and see what happens, I'll update in a day or so with my outcome.
Hey guys,
Im running into this weird situation with my GN3, when listening to music through the google music player I get a massive volume drop when the track changes, or when i rewind the track or even just put it to a different part of the song.
heres a video taken with my wifes GN3
as you can see its a really drastic volume change. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled and tried shutdown and everything. My wifes GN3 doesnt do this.
this also happens when using headphones as well.
Basically is this a software issue or a hardware warranty claim that I should go to verizon for? This is a stock non rooted GN3
thanks for the help in advance!

So I went to Verizon to talk to them. Of course I get someone who doesn't know anything lol. Anyways she has me do a hard reset (lame) so I do. The problem goes away and I say ok. No problem if it comes back I'll be back.
everything was fine until this morning when I played with my music again.
The source of the problem is the equalizer. Hard reset puts the eq settings back to off. So this morning I turned on the equalizer and it did it again! I turned off the equalizer again and it worked normally again.
Needless to say this is weird. Can you are if this is the same with yours? I will go back to Verizon when I get a chance.

Music Volume changing? (replace the EQ program?)
I _think_ I was having the same type of issue. The EQ in Google Music is an interchangeable app, so I am trying a different one which so far doesn't seem to have volume issues, but it's early yet. Apologies if I am misunderstanding the problem but I recommend trying a different EQ app from the Play store. You can have several but only one can be active at a time and Google Music will use it (when you go to EQ in Google Music settings whatever EQ app you have active under Settings > Sound > Music Effects is what opens).
I'm having the same issue. I'll be listening to music with headphones on and when a new track streets the volume gets cranked super loud. Is an exchange in order?
hoping it is software

I eventually started having the same problem again with the new EQ app. I disabled EQ and it hasn't happened since. I plan to live without an EQ and wait for a fix, hoping it is software.

I had this exact experience. I've had other issues too, an issue where my Alarm app crashes every so often, and where my phone (when I set it down sometimes) will become unresponsive (screen off) and not let me restart it without a battery pull.
I went to Verizon on 11/26 and had a Factory Reset, thinking that perhaps the recent OTA update could be the culprit, a reasonable theory. After the Factory Reset, the Alarm issue has not happened again (encouraging) but the unresponsive screen issue has (not great). The Music issue I have is the exact same, where in the store naturally it worked, but I hadn't though to turn on the equalizer. I have tried other Play equalizers to the same result.
I have since went back in (yesterday) to have them send me a Manufacturer's Refurb (I haven't Rooted yet), and will receive that on Wednesday (hopefully, if FedEx isn't lame). This will allow me to verify if it is hardware (or if i'm just unlucky and get 2 hardware issue units).
That said, i'll offer this: Today I tried uninstalling many apps I installed, just to try to rule out stuff, no luck. I tried then clearing the Data / Cache for Google Music, and then 'reverting' to the Factory installed version. The issue was gone (and the stock equalizer was on). I have since updated again to the current version, and the issue is still gone. I am wondering if there is a time component to it, and will keep checking.
I do have a separate thread going with all of my observations (i'd link but i'm not a real boy yet), called 'Note 3 - Alarm / Music Issues?' or something, feel free to add your thoughts if you want, and i'll keep an eye on this thread too for info. I want this fixed! (My Galaxy Nexus didn't have this issue...)
In for updates. Mine is doing the same thing.
I have the same exact problem. It happens when using headphones as well as streaming via bluetooth, so seems a software issue to me.
It hasn't happened to me in a while now (knock on wood). Only thing I can think of is keep all your apps up to date

Happens to me on Google Music. If I pause then restart the song it goes back. Since so many of us have the problem it might be something with 4.3.

I notice mine doing that randomly if I get a text or other types of notifications while listening to Pandora it cuts volume and most of the time it will fix itself with the next notification that chimes in, it goes back to normal volume
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app
Unfortunately, as per the version at least, i've seen it present in the version that is stock/pre-loaded on the Note 3 as well as the most current / up to date version.
My refurb did not arrive yesterday but hopefully today, so i'll have a second unit to (ideally) confirm if it could be hardware or is more likely software. I feel I have seen similar reports of issues on the S4, so it is leaning towards a software / 4.3 issue, but i'm surprised that it's not more consistently occurring. (I have at least one coworker who cannot recreate the issue).
Any update on this?
Spotify does not have this problem... Has to be with the google play music app...
Hey, guys,
So I've got this weird issue with rooted SM-N910F. Fairly often, while talking via bluetooth headset, the bluetooth would suddenly turn off and then back on right away. I can't seem to figure what causes it. The only thing I have noted is that occasionally it would happen when there's a notification sound during a call or media playback - but then it also happens when there are no notifications.
I've used CatLog to record some logs, the crash is right near the end, probably in the last 2,000 lines. Any chance anyone could give me a direction here?
Thanks in advance!

I'm having the same issue especially Snapchat the sound makes me feel like my speaker is going out which it's not
Same here. Bug in system
same here. I noticed it for awhile. Samsung needs to fix this bug!
it happens at least twice today. so annoying.. Anyone here having the same issue?
Aye, happening with me too. But it is not consistent, sometimes the notification sound will play in full, other times cut.
I also have the cut off sound when my sounds do play, but I currently have an issue when none of my sounds are playing at all. Then suddenly one app will play a sound, but the rest won't. But I had this on my S7 as well, so I'm not sure where the bug is, as it isn't specific to any app. I usually have to do a complete factory reset to reinstate them, which is a bit annoying.
This is pants, 8 months down the line and it's still happening. For me it's calendar notifications. Sometimes it'll only play one note of the sound, sometimes none, sometimes 2 or 3 notes. I've tried everything from changing tones to doing a factory reset, still no good. This is bad from Samsung, they've got such excellent hardware but their software implementation is poor, there's always something dragging it down.
Thought it was all just in my head… Turns out others are also having this issue. It doesn't happen 100% of the time, but it does happen.
I had problem with my S7 edge and now 6 months later with my Note 8. I did the factory reset and problem still exists. Someone had recommended me to install "Disable increasing ring" app, and that seems to fix the problem. You get 10 days trial then it's .99 cents to purchase. I will try to do the factory reset again and install very minimal app to see which one that causes the problem. Things is, I shouldn't have to purchase an app to fix the problem. Very frustrating. I don't know If it's only happen Samsung phone. If that's the case then I might have to switch to Pixel.
I just got an S9 now, running oreo, so we shall see if it still does it. I will report back soon.
Stupid Glitches
I'm having this problem now. I don't know if it's where I live (Juneau, Alaska) or my service provider or too much stuff stored on my phone. It's irritating. Especially when I end up missing half of my husband's work breaks because the sound doesn't go off. It happens mostly with FB messenger. I'm sick of it.
