[Q] Internal / portable SD card issue in Oreo - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hi
OK, so this is my question: I just installed LineageOS 15.0 on my XT1685 . And when I was using the stock ROM (N), I used my SD card to store pictures, videos, etc. After installing O, this option seemed to have disappeared for some reason. First, I couldn't get to choose save location from the stock camera app that came with the Gapps ( https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=817550096634797336 ). Then I tried installing Open Camera, but then I got this issue with not being able to write to the SD card (see attachment).
At this point my SD card was formatted as "portable". And I just could NOT get Oreo to understand that I wanted to use it as a default for storing pictures and video. After a while I gave up, and re-formatted as "internal". Which basicly means that now the phone's storage and the external storage are kinda "integrated" in a way.. the SD has become a part of a greater whole..
Which leads me to my actual question...:
Why is it that I could not get it to work as it did on Nougat - as portable, basicly..
And also; how to get around this?
Just to be clear, this is a general Android question (I think), NOT a question specific to the Lineage ROM (which is awesome btw, imo!)
Thanks,
- H

I have AOSP Extend Oreo on my g5+. I put open camera on my phone and was able to store pics on the SD card. However, it stopped working and won't store pics at all. I installed the native moto camera app, but it won't let me store pics to the SD card. I'm hoping someone can provide some assistance.

I am on stock Oreo and I currently use my SD as portable. Formatting the sd as Internal eventually led to 3 different corrupted sd cards after some time, so, if your problem is not software-related, try to stick to formatting the card as portable storage.

I only know a part of the problem, which is happening to me too: a while after restarting the phone, I open my SD card in any file manager (I have Total Commander) and it doesn't show any file but both the file manager and the system shows the Sd card's occupied and free spaces, and I've had to dismount and remount the SD card in order to be able to get to any file or folder of it, but several minutes later the files become impossible to access again.

[Q] a7 no longer reads sd card, what can I do?"

My a7 was running well for about a week since it had previously quit/locked up...but today when I booted up device, it failed to recognize sd card...same card used for updating to mod 1.4...same card I've been using to listen to my music, etc...but now won't recognize...I've tried two different micro sdhc cards..formatted, reformatted, but device continues to display mount sd card...all else works fine! Does anyone have any new ideas? I can't even reinstall mod since a7 can't read my cards. Thanks for any input that would be helpful. I understand these issues are ongoing for many out there...what to do?
I have a similar problem, but not exactly the same.
Since the A7 has an internal SD card, it will only allow me to download data to that card. Now, the internal SD (not internal memory) is completely full and so I can't download anything period to my device. So, videos, music, docs, photos that I try to download from the internet fails. Also Droid Tv can't download anymore shows bec it says the SD card is full. I've ask several so call experts about they don't know why? Can anyone help me?
Deepmagic: I would probably try a complete wipe and reinstall.
Doopyboy: this has been pointed in another thread, these tablets sd internal has more memory then cell phone device, if you want memory back delete or move files to sdcard-disk(micro sdcard)

Have you tried the reset button on the rear of the unit? I think I have read about that clearing this issue up for others.

... I don't know where to start with this post. It doesn't make sense.
Please explain what you are describing as "internal SD (not internal memory)"
You do know that the device's internal memory is /mnt/sdcard/ and that the MicroSD slot mounts as /mnt/sdcard/sdcard-disk/ right?

'convert' to adaptive storage

I feel like such a noob. I have a 16 GB model with a 128 micro SD card. I was expecting MM to come out much earlier than this (I'm on Verizon) but some time ago I had to not only point my music to the SD card but I also had to move a bunch of apps to the SD card in Lollipop because I was running out of space.
What is the most direct and foolproof way to backup my phone (not rooted), convert to adaptive storage and then get back to where I was with the least amount of work?
Thanks for any suggestions
Root it and use titanium backup

Move apps back to internal storage, but free up space if you don't have it; you can copy the entirety of user-facing internal storage via MTP to a temporary directory on a PC, if you absolutely need the space for apps. Then, copy the entirety of the SD card to a temporary directory on a computer using either a microSD USB reader or via MTP through the phone itself. This will take an hour or so (maybe much longer) depending on how much data needs copying. If you don't need to free up space from internal storage, deal only with the SD card data.
You can then format the SD card as internal, and copy everything back to it via MTP. Moving apps to the SD card in MM is a bit more clumsy, and hopefully Google will fix that. But, as it stands, you have to individually move supported apps to the SD card by tapping on the app within Apps, and selecting Storage. Total step backwards, IMO.
Keep in mind that MM defaults to USB charging when connecting your phone to a computer, so pull the notification shade down, select USB for charging, then use the File Transfer (MTP) option.
so I think I followed Jason.Droid's suggestion right
I didn't feel like rooting to go about this so I did the move & copy thing. With minimal usage all things seem to work fine.
I am surprised by one thing though. I had thought that integrating the SD card via adaptive storage was supposed to just 'abosorb' it into what is shown as internal storage. Instead what I see is a summary at the top of 18.66 GB used of 133 , then a line item for Android OS, a line item for internal storage (7.11 GB used of 9.50 GB) and line item for the SanDisk SD card (5.04 GB used of 117 GB).
Is this how it is supposed to look? Does MM just handle where to put apps and data from now on so I don't get the internal storage full errors? Do I have to flip a setting to indicate to install apps on the SD card (like it was @ android 2.2)?
I'm expecting MM to just handle it. I also noticed the SD card option in Camera settings is now gone, so that to me is another indicator I'm in good shape.
Thanks again for any comments/confirmation.

unable to move apps to sd card

Well i think my SD Card is acting strangely since i did the new marshmallow update
When i was still running with 5.1.1 Lollipop i was able to move all apps to sd card with no problems at all,
i did a factory reset to get rid of the root and then updated to marshmallow 6.0.1 and at first i could move apps to sd card normally like i used to do with the lollipop and everything was fine until i restarted the phone, when the phone restarted all apps that were on sd card were greyed out with a small sd card icon bellow each one and when i tap on it it says app not probably installed i knew this was a common problem and leaving the phone for a few minutes would restore it but i left my phone unused for 3 hours and apps remained greyed out so i deleted them and redownloaded them again for play store but this time when i tried to move them it would say not enough space on sd card although there is 6 gbs of free space i thought maybe some leftovers from those apps still remained so i formatted my sd card 2 time once with the android and another time from my laptop ...nothing changed still cant move apps to sd card ...and on plus on that when i connect my phone to my laptop it only reads the internal storage it doesnt show the sd card as if it isnt there
any suggestions?? Any help would be appreciated and sorry for my bad English
MbatauVille:
This has been effected by the new security feature on Android 6.0.1 firmware so as not to alter app system files. You should also check your SD file system (format) for compatibility. Also if your are running a custom kernel, Android security patch prohibits non-trusted apps from making changes to to execute as system files outside the inbuilt storage

Issue With K4 Note coz of SD Card Configured as Internal Storage

@Strephon Alkhalikoi @Chainfire
Hello Friends..
i own a Lenovo K4 Note 16 Gb.. due to short storage i Formatted my 64 Gb Stornium Card as Intrenal Storage few days ago. Fast Forward till today, My phone suddenly crashed today. it Restarts.. As it starts back, a notification displays saying "SD CARD MISSING - Reinsert this device" .. i removed the SD Card & reinsert it, but It taking quite long time to restart & not showing any Storage Capacity of SD Card.. In Storage&USB section(in Phone) it says "Checking"..
My Concerned issues are 2 here..
1. Full Recovery of Data from Encrypted SD Card(Adopted SD Card)..
2. Backup of WhatsApp, Contact, SMS, Backup, as while backing up Via (already installed) backup taking apps, it says "No Internal Storage Found" as it is considering SD Card the main Storage.
NOTE:= i m Recieving WhatsApp messages (Cant Download Media) , Can Create & Delate Contacts, but cant take backup.. So i thought that there shld be a way to get my precious BackUps & Data..
Please Guide. Awaiting for your kind Response..
Thanks Rajat
@glassyrajat: I saw this rather late, so I apologize. I don't really get notifications of people mentioning me by name.
You used the adoptive storage feature of Android to combine your internal storage and MicroSD card into one, somewhat like using a striped RAID array in a PC. When you do that, you cannot remove the MicroSD card or else you get errors. The message you are seeing regarding "checking" is because Android has to verify that the MicroSD card you inserted is the one that you made part of the storage. If the card isn't the same or is corrupted, Android will tell you to replace the card.
The best solution I have for you is to be patient. Android has to complete that check, but once it does and assuming no damage to the MicroSD card you should be able to see all your files. If for some reason you cannot, your only option is to format the MicroSD and lose everything on it. This drawback to adoptable storage is why I don't use it or recommend it.

Replacing/upgrading SD card

Whats he best/easiest way to replace my sd card. At the moment it is a 64 gb and I'm upgrading to a faster Samsung 128GB. The current card is formatted as internal memory. I can easily move/ delete/backup some files to a pc. I'm wondering about app files and data that might be n the sd card if I just reformat it as a media card as someone suggested
Thanks.
You must first change the card to external, the phone will move all the system files for you. If you don't have enough room on the internal to do this you will just have to temporarily move pictures video and music to a pc/cloud/usb etc.
Once you have it set to external just swap them over, do not take the SD out while set as internal.
I thought as much. Thanks kudos1uk for confirmation.

Hi All,
I am having same issue now. I want to replace my 32GB with 64GB card. Firstly, HOW do you change the card to external? There is no option doing anything like this. I can only see option to format the card as internal, which means all data will be lost.
For some reasons, i can copy the files from the 32GB out via USB to PC, but if took out the 32GB and put in the 64GB and format as internal, i have no way to access it or put the files back into the card.
Does it have something to do with formatting? Initially i format my 64GB to exFAT, but after putting into the phone, i formatted it again as required by the phone which i assume it will be formatted to whatever that is compatible by the phone.
All i want to do is to migrate the stuff on my old sdcard to my new sdcard and use the phone as usual.
Please help!
Thanks
I now have a 128 gb card in my A1
As far as I can remember you can copy your docs/media etc files on to your pc but not any app files which you will need to reinstall on your new card. The system files should stay on the internal card.
I changed my card before the phone updated to pie and now es file manager only sees the new card.
Update.
I just checked in settings /storage/apps and there is an option to move them to internal though with limited space only a few could be moved.
I'm not impressed with the A1. Sometimes it hangs or crashes. My redmi 6 is more reliable.

Hmm...i am not sure whats the phone OS version now, not sure if it's Orea or Pie. Maybe i can check later. The internal storage has about 23GB user/32GB. The old 32GB micro SD card has about 10GB used/ 32GB. Even if i took out the whatsapp media and DCIM folder media, there is still a couple of GB of files in the microSD card. So far i can only see i can move the apps back to internal, which i have only 1 (which i uninstalled anyway). So there is still 10GB of files in my 32GB microSD.
How do i move the DCIM folders back to internal? Another problem, in the Camera app, i can't find anywhere to point the camera storage settings at all!
Thanks for your feedback.

Never mind. I have solved the problem.
I keep looking for the options in the 3 dots in my SDCARD menu. Instead i should select the INTERNAL STORAGE. Clicked the 3 dots, there is a MIGRATE option. :silly: This will copy back the files from the SDCARD to the internal memory (provided enough storage...i have to uninstall some games first). Then i can swap out the card and put in new card.
Thanks anyway, hope this will help other people in the future!
