[warning][hardbrick] dont flash ota updates blindly !!! - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I am here to tell you guys. If you ever updated/flashed stock nougat soak test/ official updates on your moto x play. And if you reverted back to marshmallow. Then don't flash any ota updates you've recieved . Because it will result in a hardbrick (no fastboot/recovery mode).
As of now, there are no proper blank flash files to rescue device from hardbrick .blank flash files are present in leaked nougat soak test fastboot firmware. But they aren't working on these hardbricked devices
And I have seen almost 5-7 guys in past few days hard bricking their device by flashing ota updates
Motorola already mentioned that once updated you cannot rollback to previous android versions.
NOTE: You cannot downgrade to a previous software version after installing this update.

I applied a guy's Twrp recovery n now m on Sept. 1 security path along with 7.1.1 . Will it brick my phone if I flash 6.0.1 again through adb. ?? And please suggest a way to root Moto x play on 7.1.1 the old version of super su isn't working.
---------- Post added at 10:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:28 AM ----------
Plus suggest a Valid way to get back to 6.0.1 . Bettery life is terrible on 7.1.1 . It was bit better on 6.0.1...even after clearing dalvic cache n all the stuff from Twrp..device can be hard bricked??? ..

my devices is bricked ****

Once you have decided to use custom rom and unlocked your bootloader, you no longer use stock rom. even if you use stock rom, you shall not accept or install OTA updates.

Many guys got their devices hard bricked including me and there is no fix till date.. Gave to various service centers and all are saying to change Mother Board, which may cost around 8k approximately.. Emmc can be flashed via Jtag box.. But guys using Jtag box are very rare.. As of now my MXP is kinda paper weight !!!

There is no working blank flash files available.. You can get the MB Jtag Flashed or get the MB replaced.

Oh man, I wish I had this information before. Now my Moto X Play is also bricked
Well, I guess I'll wait to see if a method to unbrick comes along in the near future.

DOWNGRADE Danger of hard brick

Danger of hard brick
Mind you, the you that you have installed the version 5.1 and you please do downgrade.
If possible downgrade and works CORRECTLY, but does not drop the bootloader version. (Motorola apparently not contemplated back the bootloader)
Well, if after downgrade accept an OTA, OTA is flash the bootloader and, being superior version, fails, result: this just corrupt. The phone turns off and no more lights. If the computer connect this is recognized as QHUSB_BULK. That while you have battery, since neither charge.
There are many moto g afflicted with the same problem, and have been waiting to release the BLANKFLASHFILES files needed to revive the phone. Unfortunately it seems that Motorola only thing it does is send to the affected to a technical service, with subsequent payment of repair, as it seems to those files could change the IMEI, etc.
So you know, maybe not downgrade, but if ye do not accept any OTA, the cell dies.
I speak from experience,The announcement is made
I downgrade from 5.1 to 5.0.2 thanks for the info bro

moto G solution does not work for the moto e
is the a solution ???
can someone explain this with some better english?
In short, please never install any OTA update if you have downgraded from 5.1 stock rom to 5.0.2 stock rom. Otherwise your moto e will be dead permanently as motorola will never release the files to recover it.
If you have hardbricked in this way, only solution is to sell all parts individually except the motherboard like me. I have recovered 50% of its cost (Moto E 1st Gen).
Would flashing 5.0.2 bootloader along with downgrading prevent this issue ?

LOL yeah no kidding..
I've done it but...
Like none of these guys mention.. Most use custom roms and god knows what else.
Most people here use CM and then assume everyone else does too
I have done it a few times and had no problems.

Sorry, I don't understand.
If I downgrade to be safe from brick I should:
a) Leave the the 5.1 bootloader
or
b) Flash the 5.0.2 bootloader and then flash Lollipop 5.0.2
?
Thanks in advance.

If you already have version 5.1 bootloader CAN NOT DOWNGRADE, that's what causes the brick.
The flash fails and nothing happens, do not touch it.
The OTA is that if it tries to update and how it can not be corrupted. No more lights.
Need to downgrade

Even if you would want, you couldn't downgrade INCLUDING bootloader )))
If the phone is unlocked, then any kernel, system, modem, and recovery can be flashed. Feel free to experiment, but don't receive any OTA after that. Receiving OTA on unlocked Motorola phone is prohibited, generally speaking. OTA mechanism isn't aware of every of your modification inside the phone, so kills what's not right to him.

I explain you based on my experience: You will never receive any more OTA as you don't have in sync the OEM partition. The OTAs check the "build.prop" in SYSTEM and the "oem.prop" in OEM. A lot of firmwares here for flashing your device lacks the OEM partition.
So, try to reflash a full firmware.
I hope it helps you!

I flashed the Brazil ROM (.15 version) on my G5 Plus and got the OTA update to the .67 version. After installing the update, the device went into a hard bricked state. No bootloader. Only the LED blinks when the device is connected. Tried reviving the bootloader using blankflash but it fails each time I try.

Yeah, attempting to downgrade from the retail US May 2017 patch (NPNS25.137-35-5) to the Indian/Brazil .15 firmware and then attempting to take OTA updates has caused hard bricks previously.
Which blankflashes have you tried? Does the albus (Moto Z2 Play) blankflash work? https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73062532&postcount=15 I do not know if any of the Moto Z Play blankflashes may work (given the similar hardware) or may not depending on how new they are.

Good to hear you got your device working. I imagine you could flash the TWRP flashables if you wanted a more updated system (since these flashables don't affect the GPT/bootloader, where the majority of the hard bricks seem to arise): https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5-plus/development/rom-twrp-flashable-stock-builds-t3675616

How to downgrade to stock from soak test oreo

So I installed Oreo soak test on Moto G5 plus which was shared by link over stock Nougat build with august security patch. But i want to go back to nougat with august security patch from this soak test build...How can i do that without bricking and losing imei etc.I have not rooted or unlocked bootlader ever...and yes i read some threads but none of them are matching my current situation ,so please guide me through proper process .
Well I'm in the same situation. And I was having wifi issues. Bt I managed to fix it. From what I've read so far you cannot downgrade the bootloader. So you can flash using fastboot bt leave out the gpt and bootloader commands. I'm not sure if this will let you download OTAs. I haven't tried it out yet. Or if u manage to get the C092 bootloader unlocked ( some people managed) then you install TWRP and flash a stock nougat zip. Or you will have to wait for someone to capture the actual 85-16 OTA , make a zip of it and then update. There was a guide for flashing, it was for g4 series to downgrade from N to MM, the commands should be the same. Hope this helps.
Can anyone share official oreo update zip?Not talking about soak test one.

Checking bootloader version on the phone

Hi, how do I check my current bootloader version that is on my phone? And how do i know what version of bootloader will be in any stock rom i want to flash?
I don't want to overwrite with older bootloader. Need to know the current and the next one i will flash.
My device is from Europe and I have NPN25.137-92 installed.. I think this is not the latest stock nougat for my region.
Cheers.

No need to push your question everyday. If someone is able/wants to answer he will do.
First of all: NPN25.137-92 is not the European firmware, it's the one for India and Brazil.
The latest one in Europe seems to be NPN25.137-93-14, since yesterday there is another update with version number NPN25.137-93-18 out incl. August security patch but until now only US users (software channel RETUS) have confirmed it. For India/Brazil (your firmware) the latest Nougat firmware is NPN25.137-92-14.
Have you fastboot flashed some firmware on your device so that you are on NPN25.137-92 now? That could be the reason you don´t receive any further OTA updates.
Your bootlader version should be visible when you boot into stock recovery.
Yes, I must have flashed pretty wrong firmware, and now I want to get back on the track. Though I dont remember and I dont have knowledge what was flashed before that. Now I wonder what should be my next step in order to have latest European nougat, or oreo.

Flash latest european firmware NPN25.137-93-14 via fastboot. It can be found somwhere here in the Moto G 5+ threads or you can download it with Lenovo Smart Assistant: https://support.lenovo.com/de/de/downloads/ds101291
That should keep you back on track.
If you can't wait you can update to Oreo with the available OTA found here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5...fficial-moto-g5-g5-plus-t3848246/post77856408 ( Read OP of that thread to find out how). But as I posted above there's a newer nougat firmware out in the US so you may not receive future Oreo updates if you use this OTA.

No, that's not safe. Downgrading is always a risky thing because of the bootloader and taking OTA after that could completely hardbrick your phone.
So if you're once on 93-14 you shouldn't flash an older firmware than this. Same applies to downgrading from Oreo to Nougat.

bootloader unlock Can You Receive Updates via Ota or No?

I am curious about these issues, my question is the following when I unlock my Bootloader I can do an update via OTA when it arrives on my device? Or is my phone going to have Hard Brick?
I want to give a Downgrande on my smartphone but it is still in stock without any modification. And through the tutorials I read ask for the unlock Bootloader. My intention is to only downgrade. A friend of mine gave the following idea: "unlock the bootloader to then downgrade and after it has been successfully done." I search how to lock the bootloader again using CMD to put a system with the bootloader locked and so in the future I will be able to receive updates via Ota. " Does This Worker Ideas In Practice?
This my Frist Post here If I make a mistake, tell me, we will not repeat.:fingers-crossed:
When it comes to being able to receive updates when bl is unlocked, that's a yes, it will work fine and won't affect your phone's functionality.
On the other hand downgrading is generally a bad idea. The problem is, when you update your phone your bootloader also gets an update. All parts of the OS except for the bootloader can be downgraded to a previous version, and if you do that, the downgraded OS can function normally on the newer bootloader.
Now comes the tricky part. If you try to do an OTA on a downgraded OS with a new bootloader, the OTA will treat the bootloader as if it were the old one, and will overwrite parts of it that it shouldn't, which will corrupt it. And there you have a pricey paperweight.
The only way of updating a downgraded device is to flash it clean with a newer version (or the version same as the bootloader).
Now what is the reason you'd want to downgrade?
After Unlocked Bootloader You Can't Get OTA Updated Even You Relock Bootloader ., tested On Moto G5s
Model X1795
However During try to Relock or downgrade Oreo 8.1 to 7.1.1 You May Get Complete Dead Your Phone as my phone goes During downgrade .

My bootloader is unlocked.
I wanted to upgrade to the latest firmware and because I was rooted I flashed the firmware I was on at that moment (no down - or upgrade) again and after that I was able to apply and install every single OTA up to the latest. I could have flashed the latest Oreo firmware directly too but I wanted to test this way and to update by flashing latest firmware would have been possible after that too.
So updating via OTA with an unlocked bootloader was no problem for me.
In the end you get the unlock code from Motorola itself and it would be kind of strange if they won't deliver updates anymore for a feature they provide for their devices.
