DFU Mode - Mystery - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I know that there are already several threads where this is being discussed on this forum, just wanted to add this one so that people could share how they overcame it, As some let their battery die and then Vol down+Power into EDL, whereas some dismantle the phone and short the testing point, whereas some even got lucky with the Deep Flash Cable.. therefore it would be of benefit to all if all such solutions are shared under once single thread so that anyone suffering from it can look into one single list of options that he or she has!
As someone who is still figuring out how to escape this death trap, this would be great!

It's not a death trap for me ?? I can't even get it to that point. It's an amazing phone and I want to keep using it. I can't tell you how many different combinations I've tried in the last 24 hours and I have yet to get miflash to see my phone. All while adb and Qualcomm things are working exactly how they're supposed to. It's so frustrating that I can't even get my device into a state that needs recovering, especially with soooo many amazing ROMs for it!!

I have tried both ports on this laptop multiple times. That's my next guess. Only downfall is I only have this one and don't know many other people that have one.
I'm getting the error, "parameter length can't be less than zero"

Had to disassemble the phone and follow the 4th category brick guide for me. I tried everything else, but that's the one that actually worked.

Can anyone share on how to get to the FTM mode from DFU ??? how did they achieve it!?

Supposedly fiddle enough with the buttons until it works, for example: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ax...estigation-t3511191/post74092981#post74092981
Some drain the battery first.

My ZTE is put into FTM mode by holding volume + and plugging in a USB cable that is connected to a computer. On some phones FTM mode will have ADB enabled. From ADB the command "adb reboot edl" will put the phone into edl mode without a deep flash cable.
If the phone contains a Qualcomm chip and you have Qualcomm drivers installed EDL mode will cause the phone to register in the device manager as a com port labeled Qualcomm 9008. Miflash recognizes the Qualcomm 9008 mode.

Don't bump completely dead threads, please??
Also you would be right if this didn't pertain to DFU. FTM almost never works when your phone is DFU bricked

Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 or Secure booting error (No Boot - No Recovery - No Download Mode) or "QHSUSB_BULK"
Hi team, if you have come here I'm sorry you are having this problem! But my friend and I have been to hell and back trying to fix this problem and we wanted to share our method of success for any poor soul who is experiencing the same thing! For our situation the USB was unplugged half way through flashing a KDZ or going back to stock firmware and created the No Boot - No Recovery - No Download Mode problem.
This has only been tested on the D855.. Just so you know.
First off, here are some links which you may need to have a look at if you have not done so already. Most of the bricking problems have already been extensively talked about by people here on XDA. For the method that works, we had to pull information from everywhere and spent a long time looking for the solution.
How to go back to stock - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785089
Link for TOTs and KDZ's from the above thread - http://storagecow.eu/index.php?dir=Xda/LG+G3/Stock/

This is your last stop shop if everything is broken and nothing works, involves hardware fix - http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/general/guide-fix-hard-brick-recovery-guide-t3132359
The problem we encountered several times with all of the described methods above, is that many do not describe important things. While the main fix thread for the Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 mode, which is shown in device manager, is very well written and detailed, the programs which are linked in this thread are questionable and haven't worked for many users with some offering to fix for money. We searched the internet and located a working version of the program which worked without giving a "Device was not found in dload trying to flash programmer" like the one provided on the XDA page. Use the links below for a working version from this thread http://androidforums.com/threads/lg-g2-not-turning-on-help.916865/
My first point is if you are having problems with any of the things, CHANGE YOUR USB CABLE or use the stock cable (I know most experienced users know this). The reason for this problem has something to do with different USB cables being made for different purposes and are of different qualities. Having an error on the USB ports gave us only qhsusb_bulk on windows device manager, without Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 as well.
If you are still having problems, check your USB ports. It is really important to make sure this isn't the problem or you will be trying to fix this problem endlessly.
First attach the USB cable to the computer. When you plug your phone in, make sure you attempt to enter download mode by holding the volume up button when you plug the USB into your phone. Even though the phone will not enter "Download Mode" It will allow the phone to be detected by your computer (at which point you can release the buttons, it should then show "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008" under ports. If this is not displayed you have a problem with the USB cable or port, or your phone is hard bricked and you need to head to the above guide for the hardware fix. If you have followed so far and are wondering what to do from here, once the "Main Fix" guide ends, head over to the "How to go back to Stock" thread above. Your phone should be showing "firmware upgrade" and you can proceed to flash a new updated KDZ on your device then everything will work and your nightmare should be over!

For all people with Windows 10 an problems with drivers (device is detected by Windows but app is not connecting). Decompress de correct cab for your Windows version, and update the driver "Qualcomm HS-USB QDloader 9008" with the path you used to extract. Now this driver isn't advertising that isn't signed anymore, and all apps will connect with your LG G3

I just fixed my Lg g3 with this method. Not sure if it will work with AndroidNetUSB
Would like to help for any difficulties. (e.g. Not able to find TOT file) etc.
Thanks to @Orcam & @kryptonite
This did not work. Here's what I tried:
1. Without battery
2. Changed drivers as @shawe_ewahs says
3. With battery
4. Admin and non-admin
5. Changing COM ports
But, every time, I get:
"Device was not found in dload trying flash programmer
TEST Aborted!!"
My LG G3 D851 is in Qualcomm HS_USB QDLoader 9008 (COM 41) so I know it is in the correct mode! Agh, it is very frustrating. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much! <3 I finally was able to fix my device *O*

No problem. Hope it didn't take you as long as it took us to find all the right stuff
I'm having this problem, but when I plug in without a battery all that shows up in device manager is "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)". I tried to do the hardware fix and was able to force the device to reboot by touching the pins. But all that happens is it disconnects and reconnects from USB without being detected properly.
I should note that when I turn the phone on right now, it stays stuck in the initial LG G3 splash screen. When I plug in without a battery, it shows an empty battery icon with a wire and a triangle question mark.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I think if I can just figure out how to get my machine to detect my phone as the qdloader hs usb 9008 I can figure out the rest.
The boarddiag v3.99 version 1 and 2 dont work, they dont even get ejecuted, not eve trying to execute as administrator.
Just wanted to reply since I resolved my issue. It turned out that, despite the apparent inability to boot into download mode, I discovered that if I booted up the phone with a battery in it and plugged into a windows 7 laptop, and held the button down to enter download mode, it eventually let me into download mode. I really can't explain why this worked, but just wanted to put it out there. It was at least a few minutes before I noticed that the laptop chirped and it was showing the install screen in download mode.
Hope this helps someone out.

Sounds like it may be a problem with windows from what you two have said. Perhaps compatibility mode is the way to go. They did release a pretty major windows 10 update since I posted this guide.

Bricked phone but can still get into EDL mode

Okay so long story short: I unlocked my bootloader, flashed twrp and things like that and tried to flash lineage. This was all using the Axon 7 tool. I did something wrong and now I can't get into any other mode but EDL mode. The phone shows up in Miflash but I always get some "cant read hello packet error" and it tries to "reset" and end it eventually just stops and gives me an error. Plz help.

I assume you're not on Windows 10 x64? If you aren't, either get a PC with Win10 x64, or do this:
Connect the phone, get into EDL mode. Now go to the Device Manager, and tell me where it appears.
It can appear as:
-"Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008" under Ports (COM & LPT);
-"ZTE DFU Interface, under Ports too; or
-"QUSB_BULK" under Universal Serial Bus devices or unknown devices.
If it appears as the DFU stuff, you'll have to follow the 4th category brick repair guide. If it appears as QDLoader, right click on it, then Properties, then go to Bits per second and put the number at 115200 or 128000 if it's not there. Then hold the 3 buttons (vol and power) until Windows beeps and the device manager spazzes and the phone flashes the red led, then try MiFlash again.
If it appears as QUSB_BULK, uninstall the driver (tick delete driver software too) and restart edl.

Lol nope, not if EDL is not working for you. You still didn't tell me whether you have a DFU brick or not. If you do have a DFU brick the only surefire way is to disassemble your phone and short a testpad, so don't complain.
Try what I told you above. It may be that it's set at 9600 baud

1. You must use "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008" driver (there is another one call zidag but it's not work here)
2. As soos as you enter EDL mode, you must press "Flash" as quick as possible
i'm in a similar situation... i did "fastboot oem lock" and now i'm in a loop trying to boot the phone, after the 3time it enters edl (i see the red light).
My model is de G model (2017G) can i use miFlash just to restore the recovery and fastboot?
i had installed lineageOS, when connecting my phone it says that is the U model (2017U) but i think is only a label tag from the rom...
Thansks for the help!!
A 64 bit computer is not really necessary, however it is adviced.
I used a 32bit laptop running Win 10 to rescue mine.
Drivers seem to be a major problem, having the correct up to date drivers is a must.
Also try using Edl Tool and the Axon7 tool kit to access flashing.
Zadig drivers can help in some instances.
With the error you are receiving, have you tried another Edl package?
I was using an Edl package that would not finish flashing either, try a different package and make sure its correct for your phone.
I hope you get it sorted
The hello read package does occur when the phone is not really EDL mode anymore. You always have to restart the phone and boot manually into EDL mode with + - Power and you have to reboot everytime you did or if the hello error happens.
Look under device manager if it says Qualcomm instead of ZTE Device Handset. If that is the case you can build your own EDL cable.
"First I opened the cable and cut the Black and green open, then I connected all the black and green one together and pressed the power button until the red led was gone and 2 additional seconds.
After that I disconnected the modded cable and connected the Phone to the PC with the orginal cable and it showed up as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008. "
You can install the qualcomm drivers under the MiFlash tab in the latest version.
i finally solve my issue following the guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/a2017-4th-category-brick-repair-manual-t3585898 there is also a resume on https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-dfu-unbrick-guide-disassembly-t3731152

Return to stock has gone a bit Pete Tong - help!

I'm returning my 2017G as the internal gyro sensor is wonky and it's not playing well with my VR headset.
I was following a guide (I don't think it's important to state which) to return to stock. Seemed to go well until my phone started asking for a password (there wasn't one active). I put in lots of passwords thinking it would just eventually factory reset itself. Instead of resetting, it accepted a password and I then got the decryption unsuccessful screen. "The password you have entered is correct but unfortunately your data is corrupt". It gives me the option to reset my phone but nothing happens. It looks like it's going into EDL mode (black screen with red led). I can see the phone in dev manager and it lists as QUSB etc when put into EDL mode. My problem is that it isn't listed as an adb device so I cant't flash anything further.
I have removed and installed drivers using zadig. I've removed and reinstalled the QUSB drivers. I've run the minimal adb thingy. Bear in mind that I've been flashing recoveries and roms with no issue up until now. I can also access FTM.
Any words of wisdom gratefully received.

Why did you try to get ADB while you were in EDL though? You only get the EDL connection there.
Look, two things:
-When you get the password thing you just have to format data (NOT wipe, but FORMAT). just remember that for the future.
-Since you didn't say what happened with the driver, let's see that first. Connect it, get into EDL (you can enter by key combination or by FTM then "adb reboot edl"), and when you're in EDL find the driver. If it is the Zadig driver uninstall it and "delete driver software too". After that hold all 3 keys (power and vol+-) until device manager refreshes and the phone flashes the led. After that the qualcomm driver should install itself. If it is "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008" use MiFlash or djkuz's EDL Tool to flash a stock system.
p.s. can you actually flash something with adb??
Lots of people seem to confuse adb with fastboot. Is that what you want to use?
Thanks both for responding. I think I've gotten myself a bit confused over what is supposed to be working at any given time.
I can get the phone into EDL mode and fastboot. Fastboot devices finds my phone. MiFlash doesn't find my phone despite having the QHSUSB driver installed.
What's the easiest way to return my phone to stock? I have MiFlash and Axon7toolkit installed.
Cheers!

That's the other thing, my laptop doesn't communicate with the phone at all via adb.
These images might help - USBDeview showing the drivers in operation in various phone states.
First is FTM, then in fastboot, then in EDL, then when it's booted normally. Green denotes drivers that are functioning OK and pink is where it might be problematic. Can you spot any issues and have ideas on how I can put it right?
Cheers!
You have the wrong drivers.

I tried to post yesterday and for some reason the XDA app didn't post the answer... Basically this:
-Forget ADB and that program that you're using to see the devices. EDL uses COM protocol, has nothing to do with adb at all.
-Go to Device manager and find where QUSB_BULK is. If it is in Unknown devices, either right click on it and try to install the driver automatically, or search for "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 drivers", download, install and try to install it on QUSB_BULK. If it is in an "USB devices" tab or on Ports "COM & LPT" simply right click, Uninstall device, Delete driver software for this device
I've done that several times over but miflash still isn't detecting it.

all right. Try EDL Tool by djkuz. I don't know if the same packages work but just download another edl package
It's weird. Doesn't matter what mode the phone is in fastboot, edl, ftm, it's not detected by my laptop .
I'll try the tool you suggest.
Tbh I'm reaching the point where I'm tempted to return as is. Bootloader is locked, it just looks like a phone fault.

Axon 7 EDL Mode Not Working/ can't boot to EDL

My Axon 7 is the A2017U, i had the B32 Nougat running on it and wanted to try the new lineageos 15.1, but had to unlock my bootloader first i used the toolkit like I've done in the past and was able to unlock it and flash twrp, when i try to boot it back on it goes to factory testing mode, i was able to get into twrp and i wiped everything and it stopped the problem of booting directly to FTM but after that i tried to go into EDL mode and it seemed to try to enter the mode but the red led indicator light stays on rather than doing a quick blink. its no longer picked up as a COM port, when i enter fastboot mode adb doesn't seem to work and I'm unsure what to do or if I'm out of luck. Thank you for your time and the advice and help you guys are able to provide.

I had no OS installed, only twrp recovery and I was able to unlock my boot loader. I tried to flash Lineage-OS ROM in twrp and didn't have much luck because i would get an error code saying it wasn't compatible with my phone and had to go into the ROM files and edit the updater-script file to remove the compatibility check.
In the end I have a working phone with a custom ROM but EDL mode is still not responsive and seems to freeze my phone as soon as I press the 3 buttons to get into EDL. the notification light blink remains on so ill take it as an indicator that something is wrong with the firmware that it uses. i still want to fix it so EDL can be used but unsure how to fix it. I did some researching and was wondering if using a deep flash Engineering cable would work to fix the EDL mode and any other problems that could be there.

EDL using the volume/power button has issues with the newer bootstack (which it sounds like you're on). However, since you have an OS now do as I recommended. It will 'reset' the EDL and once done via ADB command it will work with the volume/power buttons like it did before moving forward.

Tried everything already. Can only get to DFU mode..
So, I have a similar problem: after flashing a new version of TWRP, now Recovery doesn't start. The problem is that I haven't any OS installed and the last chance to save the phone should be reflash stock by EDL... BUT EDL mode doesn't start if I press vol UP + vol DOWN during power on... (it became black with a red light, but if I digit "ADB devices" on ADB, no devices seems connected, and in the same way it's impossible to use Axon7Toolkit). So: no Recovery, no EDL mode, no OS installed, my phone is a paperweight.
Is there a method to save my Axon 7?
Here is something to try ...
Enter edl via button combo (volup + voldn + pwr)
You should have a black screen ...
Now plug your phone into the cable on your PC/laptop ..
If your PC / laptop doesn't recognise your phone via Miflash or app you are using ...
Try tapping the power button once ...this seems to open/close the port ...
I noticed this when I was using edl mode to flash a ROM
I hope this helps

I had the same problem a few days ago. When I booted to EDL Mode the red led was instantly on but the PC recognized it somthing like ZTE Handset Device Mode.
1. You can download TWRP Treble by NFound and flash it via your TWRP. Then reboot to recovery again and under the reboot tab its possible to boot to EDL/9008 Mode.
2. You build a EDL Cable to get the device from the red light to EDL mode. Just open some usb cable and connect the green and black (all four) together, plug it in the device and press the power button
until the red light is gone and hold on two additional seconds. Then remove the cable and plug another working cable in and the PC recognize it as Qualcomm in EDL mode.
This is literally how I unbricked my device.

Thanks, I tried but this doesn't solve my problem. The strange thing is that connecting my phone in EDL mode, the phone appears in device manager as COM port, but is not seen launching an "ADB devices" command and is not seen in MiFlash too. I tried to change drivers from "ZTE device (something)..." to "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008" and in this way, although ADB doesn't detect nothing yet, MiFlash detects a COM port, but flashing an EDL image still fails with a "cannot receive hello packet" error.
Now I ordered a deep flash cable, hope this can solve... next week I'll know if it works.

No need to order that cable... If you still can cancel it i'd tell you to do that. You made a mistake by changing the drivers, you had the "ZTE Handset Diagnostic Interface (DFU)" driver, and replaced it with the EDL driver.
This of course does not work because your phone is in DFU MODE instead of EDL. What you have to do is uninstall the device via device manager and also tick "Uninstall driver software for this device", then turn the phone off and enter DFU again, and then use MultiDL from this forum to enter EDL. After that, use MiFlash or EDL Tool, and try flashing a FULL EDL file
By the way ADB will only work on FTM mode or the recovery or on a working system. You won't get ADB on edl mode or dfu mode because they simply don't have adb working, it's normal
i never use xda but this quote thing is what i have aswell

Using the ADB command i was able to get into EDL mode and it was able to get a COM port. using the volume + power buttons had the same problem. Would using an older bootstack fix it?

all i see is the red light in edl, whatever i try it Always just goes to a red light and a black screen. this happened after trying to unlock the bootloader. i was in android 8 and tried to lock it, it messed it up as my Phone could not boot anymore, i flashed the stock android 6.0 or something that came with the axon 7 toolkit and it did work but when trying to unlock the bootloader as the device state suddenly was locked it broke the whole thing and i oped edl could save me but even that is broken just like what the person in the quote has
Well the only fix to get EDL mode is through test point, there's a thread of unbricking Axon 7 using test point, find it, you'll need to open your back cover to do this
This in case nothing works to get into EDL mode.

Phone not recognized in Fastboot / Download

Three days ago, my phone went off by itself and I had a hard time starting again, it was just loading the bootanimation, I tried to reinstall the ROM, but it did not go into TWRP, although the message Recovery appears on the screen, I insisted and after several attempts, I got into the recovery, formatted everything and I installed the AICP ROM again, and I had to restart,my phone freezes in the LeEco bootloader, then again I insisted until the ROM finally started, but soon realized that it was taking too long to start (30 minutes waiting and nothing).
So I rebooted again, and from then on, I can not go into any mode anymore, trying to access the TWRP, the phone only stays on the Recovery screen until reboot after 2 minutes, when letting the phone try to start the ROM, it only stays on the LeEco screen and restart after 2 minutes, when entering Fastboot, it enters the screen in Fastboot mode, but is not recognized by the computer, not even as unknown device, the same for Download mode.
Is there anything I can try?
Doesn't seem like a a fried motherboard. In my experience, If you fried the CPU, you would still be able to access Fastboot, if you fried the GPU part of the chip, or if the LCD has failed you would feel vibrations..
Do you thin it is possible that you accidentally put the phone into EDL mode? It can sometimes be hard to get out of, and it will give you similar issues.
To leave EDL press and hold volume down and power for 1 minute or longer.
Try this
Install the All in One tool and use it to update your android and fastboot drivers. Afterwards see if the computer recognises the phone port connection by going to Control Panel>System> Device Manager* ( Even though, you may not see the drive, you will maybe still see unknown device or te port)
Maybe a Brick?
If it does not see the phone or show a unknown USB device with port 9008
Try placing the phone into EDL mode by pressing and holding the Vol Up (+) and Vol Down (-) together while simultaneously connecting the phone by USB cable to the computer. Do you see the port or phone now? If you see port 9008 you possibly are bricked, follow the steps on my unbricking thread., if you can not get back to TWRP, or fastboot, and the phone keeps a charge. Then I would think that you are definitely bricked.
Other possible issues
The issue could be the battery. Have you tried using other USB C Cables? If you can use a different usb cable let it charge for a couple of hours then see if you can get into TWRP again . If you can enter fastboot mode try reflashing TWRP, you can use the All in One tool for this.

Thanks for answering. I've tried everything.
But I can not see the smartphone when connected. USB drivers are properly installed (I used to recover other LeEco x651, x526 and x520 devices)
I left it restarting for more than hours holding the power button and volume down, no results.
The device does not appear in the Windows device manager in any way, not even as Unknown or 9008 port.
I tried several usb cables.
There is no communication with TWRP or ROM installed and neither with the computer, even though I enter into fastboot / 9008 mode. Only LeEco / recovery logo and Fastboot screen.
I think my main memory is damaged or something.

Well that sucks, if you feel like sending to the phone to China for repair, you can find several shops that are offering to repair any damaged Leeco for $10 and an average cost of $30 for resoldering. On the TaoBao website, use Chrome for translation. Some of their ads mention overseas repair
If it's memory it would be an easy fix for them.
If you don't want to fix it, I highly recommend the Mi8 if it's within your budget, its a perfect phone and you can find them for close to $300. My brother has a Redmi note 6 Pro which is also really nice. He paid $190.
Good Luck.
