I have a Sprint HTC 10 that's stock rooted and went into Settings | Apps | Configure apps | Assist & voice input and selected Greenify as my assist app so that I could long press the home button and have the screen turn off. For some reason every couple of hours Google Assistant gets reelected as the assist app. I've temporarily solved the issue by disabling the Google app, but is there a way to keep the google app without it changing my preference?

I had a good search on XDA before I posted my question and this is direct with just the Nexus 4, Anyway.
I'm running PA (March build don't remember date).
I've tried clearing app data, reinstalling, messing with app settings.
I can no longer open up Google Now to automatically begin voice search, when I slide up from the home button on the softkeys to go into Google Now it used to automatically use voice search however it no longer does this, it just stopped randomly yesterday but was working early yesterday, haven't flashed anything or modified anything since long before it stopped working =\.
So my question is, how do I get it to automatically begin a voice search?
By default, accessing Google Now by sliding up from the nav ring never automatically activated voice search for me.
I suppose if you want that function, you'll need to be able to customize the shortcut on the nav ring. This is possible on CM. Not sure if it can be done on PA. Just change the Google Now shortcut to launch the app Voice Search.
This is a bug on the app, so whenever google now is turned on, the launcher gets clear and pressing the home button will make you choose a new launcher.
The issue came since Google launched GEL, and has not been fixed. I just want to put it visible to see if it can help others and also, if anyone has come up with a workaround. My only fix is to disable google search (or just clear all data).
thanks
Anyone rooted get the update? It's working on my wife's non-rooted mxpe, but my rooted phone didn't get anything yet.
I just got it on rooted stock mxp.
Not happy that it doesn't integrate with Moto Voice at all....And GA with screen off doesn't work despite setting in Google app saying it does.
Do you have moto voice on? I also don't have the option for ok google from any screen under the voice settings in the Google app and my wife's phone does. Weird.
How did you get the update? I for a security update this morning which is weird but I didn't think that was related.

It's all server side... You will know you have it by long-pressing the home button, if it pops up with Google Assistant you have it, if it doesn't then Google hasn't turned it on for you yet.

Does Assistant pop up running the Google now launcher for you? I have feeds on and currently a long press just goes to the left Google now screen.

Yes it does... In both Google Now and Nova Prime.
It does appear that the only way to wake the pure is to have moto voice enabled. When activating moto voice it only starts the classic google now interface, not google assistant. I've tried disabling moto voice -- if you do, you can't wake the device from sleep with just your voice. I'm going to follow this thread, maybe someone will find a way?
Using Tasker (and being rooted with Magisk), I was able to get "OK Google" (my custom phrase) waking Moto Voice, then immediately launching Google Assistant. However, it only seems to work right when the screen is already on. If I turn the screen off and say "OK Google", Moto Voice launches, but Tasker never launches the shell command to launch Google Assistant. Not sure what the problem is.
Profile
Event - App (Moto Voice)
Task - Run Shell (/sbin/su -c "input keyevent 219") - if you use SuperSU or something you can just check the Root box, and can just put "input keyevent 219)
I've tried adding delays to the profile, etc... but it almost seems like the Moto Voice screen that comes up when the screen is on is "Moto Voice", but when the screen is off it's not.
Seems like we'll need an update from Motorola to truly solve this.
Running LineageOS 02/13 build. Got Google Assistant working. But OK Google detection works only when on home screen (Nova Launcher). Also I have set the Home button long press action to 'Search Assistant'.
OK Google detection setting is actually greyed out in Google App. But it's somehow working.
P.S: I have opted for Google Beta in playstore.
How to enable google voice Assistant on any app , screen on miui 8 marshmallow
Go to settings/installed apps/ on the bottom you'll see an option defaults and more, click on defaults , on this screen on the bottom select voice and Assistant input , select assist app and select google app, and now register your voice on Google Assistant and you are set
I was trying all kinds of stuff and couldn't make it work. And you nailed it with this simple thing I did not know about. Thank you so much!
I'm glad it helped, I've been looking on all android forums and i was messing with the settings until i found the solution, btw sorry for my bad English
I did that with all my MIUI devices, but it doesn't fix the problem, that it's not working when not charging and/or device is screen-off.
If you are on marshmallow there is a module called Google Assistant for non nougat devices

My is MIX 2 Version 9.5 the newest one and have been trying all above and more but still does not work. It says initializing or Google voice search is not supported by your device, after clicking microphone icon on google keyboard. If I press microphone icon on Google Maps or others, it will pop up and google microphone and immediately close in less than a second.
Hey there,
I have a Mate 8 Chinese version. Build Number NXT-AL10C00B592. My Phone is rooted.
My goal is to replace the HiVoice with the Google Assistant.
What I've done so far:
- Remove the HiVoice App described as here https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/how-to/how-to-replace-hivoice-vocal-assistant-t3465522/amp/
Even this was a P9 article, I gave it a try. Well.. the HiVoice is gone now.
- Installed the Google app, configured the speech assistant. In order to do this I had to set the Google Assistant as default assistant in my app settings. (apps - settings - default app - assistant - assistant-app =Google). Once this was done I was able to press the Home-Button to activate the Google Assistant. Awesome.. I thought so.. after approx. 15 minutes, it wasn't working anymore. The default assistant app was set to None..
So I thought it is maybe because of the Depp-sleep-device-idle Huawei-special-whatever.. so I tried to disable this one via adb.. works fine.. my WhatsApp messages arrive immediately, even if the app is closed.. yay, but that was not my goal..
I am at the end of my knowledge. Do you guys have any idea how to set the Google Assistant as default permanently? Maybe there is a config file that I could modify or something..
Thanks mates,
Shyarly
I'm experiencing the same problem here, and I'm also looking for solutions. I tried using Ice Box and successfully disabledthe Hivoice App. After playing around for a while Iwould say that force stopping the Google app would reset the assist app to none. I tried setting the assist app to Cortana and force closing it but the setting remains. On the other hand however, In my experience on a global model it seems the Google app (as a system app) cannot be force stopped, unless you disable and re-enable it, which also causes the assist app to be reset. maybe there's a switch that makes the google app persistent, and I hope that helps.
I seem to be able to solve this issue, but I'm on EMUI 8.1 and on P20Pro, not sure if it's suitable for your case - probably it's the same case for all recent Huawei phones (Chinese ver.) so I just post it here:
1. Go to settings > Apps & notifications > Apps > Google > Advanced > Set write system setting to "Yes".
2. On the same page, change the Google app launch to "Manage manually" and turn on Auto-launch, Secondary launch, and Run in background.
3. If you still have HiVoice installed, just turn off the write system setting permission on HiVoice in case it's overwriting the Google voice command.
I have checked in an hour or two so far, tried to restart my phone too, the default app for voice is still with Google and "OK Google" works smoothly. Still with one flaw, once you call the Google assistance, don't close/clean it otherwise the setting will be reset.
Thanks to Ronald.Cheng I have followed your first step and decided to add my own steps and so far I have been using my phone for whole day and even restare how I modified the setting.
1. Go to settings > Apps & notifications > Apps > Google > Set write system setting to "Yes".
2. Go to settings > Apps & notifications > Apps > Google > Battery > uncheck "close after the screen locked"
If it is possible, repeat 2. On assistant
I hope it works with your Huawei.
Same problem unsolved
Hello,
I have a honor note 10 (Chinese mui 8.2) and the same problem. First I struggled to install and use Google assistant and had to force enable it, and now it works until it resets itself. I followed the instructions below but I doesn't seem to do anything. Is there any way I can make Google a system app or with similar rights using adb or whatever ?

Doing the following only worked for me:
1. Go to settings > Apps & notifications > Apps > Google > Advanced > Set write system setting to "Yes"
Thanks much.
