Hey there,
I am currently running LineageOS (Oreo) and I have to say I am pretty dissapointed about it.
The Phone is rooted and unlocked.
Most of the reallly usefull stuf the OP5 has doesn't work on LineageOS. The Hardware Profile Slider is useless, no Screen-Off Gestures, the Stock OOS Camera App is buggy...etc
So my question is:
Is there a way to stay on regular Stock OOS and receive all OTAs but keep staying rooted?
And if so will I be able to stay rooted after an update? I read that one way would be to have TWRP installed and "manually flash" updates under 1GB.
Thanks a lot guys!
You can receive OTA with magisk passing SafetyNet but you need to re-root after every update, i think software will advise you before update that had find the root :good:

Dear All,
I have a P9 Lite VNS-L31C432V131. I unlocked the device, rooted it and installed firstly TWRP then Meticolous TWRP to have some advanced features. My objective is to update the OS to the latest Stock available (Android 6) while waiting for a stable LineageOS. If i check the Updater (OTA) I receive a notification that VNS-L31C432B151-FULL is available (approx 1.8GB). I have some questions listed below (I will try to be pretty tidy and clear so also other users can benefit for experts' answers. )
If I chose to use the OTA Update:
Can I update OTA with a Rooted and Unlocked Phone?
Is it relatively safe, or is better to avoid this procedure?
Am I going to lose the root?
Am I going to lose the Custom Recovery?
Am I going to lose the unlock?
If I chose to manual update without un-rooting and re-unlock:
Can I do it using TWRP? What is the procedure?
Is it relatively safe, or is better to avoid this procedure?
Am I going to lose the root?
Am I going to lose the Custom Recovery?
Am I going to lose the unlock?
Thanks a lot for your time,
CB
Is it possible to update from the -64 marshmallow to nougat?
Yes. I did it. No issue unless you root or install custom recovery. If you did that, go back to stock flash and run the OTA from there. You can then flash TWRP and root just like before. I have not found any nougat ROMs worth the trouble. Even with nougat modem, I had slow WiFi (802.11b slow) and LTE. No flashlight from quick settings on any. Poor battery. I went back to modded stock mm because I can't find my preferred UI tweaks available yet for magisk, and the Xposed ones screw up nougat.

I'm currently running Lineage OS installed right now, I have no issue with the flashlight, but I remember a bad build causing that issue on my phone in the past. The only issue I have right now is that Wi-Fi Direct is currently not working, meaning screen casting won't work. Voice over LTE is even working.
Looking to buy this phone soon but I was just wondering about a few things. Im buying the canadian variant G935W8.
1. Can this device be rooted on nougat as well or only marshmallow? Im buying it brand new so I think it will probably be running the latest firmware.
2. Is there any issues with unlocking the bootloader? Is it neccesary to do so if you want root and custom roms?
the bootloader is not locked on the w8 as its the exynos variant and yes nougat can be rooted its the same as 935f

Thanks. Also another question I had. If the phone comes with marshmallow and I root it will I be able to install nougat roms directly or will I have to update the bootloader and modem? In that case would it be better to update it to nougat first and then root?
Updating your phone would cause you to lose root anyways as the file structure on nougat is completely different then marshmellow.
Rooting also prevents OTA updates, so you would end up having to install nougat manually.
I suggest you upgrade your software then root it. You can use systemless root from magisk. Using TWRP just flash the latest magisk file and you are rooted. The file will automatically root your phone as part of the installation process.

If you get it with MM (highly unlikely) just don't do anything and you should get an OTA notification otherwise you can download Odin, google it as I don't have a link and nougat from here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767144483 and you can flash it yourself now rooting is a little different then it used to be do a search on the s7 edge for the info on that
the reason is yes you will need to download the BL not sure about modem but you might as well do it too
I just rooted my G935W8 running 7.0 by following the instructions in the first half of this video.
I am on 6.0 Marshmallow due to Moto X Pure not being updated. I am running stock. I really want to be able to see the emojis that my friends send me. If i root and flash Nougat Emojis? will that prevent me from getting the Nougat update via OTA?

Don't get your hopes up for nougat ota anyways...? But jokes aside you can root with magisk and still be able to take an OTA, but I dont know if it's risky, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but i was looking at this thread.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/ota-updates-magisk-t3476091/page1
Since magisk is systemless, you can get the ota, and from what I get you can flash it with flashfure, but that's over my head, you'll have to do your own reading on that I don't know if you use any apps which use safety net right now(pokemon go, Android pay, Netflix, etc...) But if you head over to the magisk forums the latest stable version is v12 but it doesn't pass safety net. If safety net is necessary for your needs you'll have to flash the latest beta, and then flash away with the nougat emojis!!!
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions, and I think after taking an ota you'd have to reflash magisk to gain root again but you'd still have the emojis without root anyways.
Edit : as I wrote that last line it occurred to me...you only need an unclocked bootloader and a custom recovery like TWRP to flash zips! Check some guides on how to unlock the bootloader and flash twrp. So you wouldn't even need root as you don't need to touch the system partition. I hope the above info is useful info anyways, but for the emojis, head over to the TWRP site and check the Downloads for Clark, flash twrp, and then flash the emojis!
Hi , I've got some doubts ?? ? Hope U'll clear them up (i mean what better place to ask?) :
Can i get OTA updates without unrooting or flashing the stock rom? If i wont
If i root and enable Camera2API, and flash stock recovery, then lock the bootloader and keep the root access can i get OTA's? (This is bothering me as rooting with magisk donot change system files as it just integrates itself to the boot image. So in theory the phone will not detect any changes in the system and since the recovery remains stock it should get me the OTA updates) { I wanna keep root so that after an OTA update if Camera2API is disabled i can enable it again }
Finally can i retain my warranty if i lock the bootloader and flash stock recovery and stock rom?
Can someone please try out my second question to check if it'd work? That would be really helpful.
I want OTA updates since i like getting those monthly security updates and since the phone has no official rom i think sticking to the stock rom would be better.
And i kinda like stock android ?
I usually love root but i wont stick to it unless my warranty is finished and the only reason im rooting now is to get the Gcam.
And can i ask a tiny favor? If i install Gcam will it be better than/as Honor 9 Lite's camera ?
Hope U guys can help me get my mind straight .

after rooting and unlocking bootloader you will not get OTA updates from manufacturer.
rooting and unlocking bootloader voids warranty, you can only claim warranty after u lock bootloader, unroot phone & install stock recovery.
OTA updates will be only availabe to stock rom+ locked botloadder+stock recovery (like out from factory state)

That's too bad?.
Means we'll have to download the full rom even for a small OTA patch ?.
Any way we can download just the OTA package and then flash it?
yes you can just download the ota you will have to wait for some1 from xda give links to the modified ota zip.
as you have to make some modifications to the updater script.
