GTI9505 - Lollipop - IMEI null/null - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not an Android developer but really stuck here. My IMEI is reporting null/null. I have rooted the phone and tried various tools to try and fix the problem. Nothing works so far. I've have replace the modem.bin but that hasn't fixed the problem. When I put the phone in diag mode it's not recognised by my PC - it comes up as unknown USB device. Updated to the latest Samsung drivers and that doesn't fix the problem. Most fixes I've seen involve fastboot but the I9505 doesn't support fastboot so that's no good. When I try Qualcom NV Tools it recognises the COM port but when I try and connect it reports 'Unable to send SPC to Phone' and 'Connection to Phone Lost'.
Any help appreciated.

You tried flashing the latest stock ROM with Odin?

Thanks.
That was the first thing I tried... No joy. I've reverted to KitKat hoping that would do it - or at least let me try out some new lines of attack. I figured I could try NV reader/writer - but I hit the same problem with the SPC code. So for the moment I'm really stuck.

You may have to have the phone restored via jtag.

I was hoping for something less extreme...
In Qualcomm NV Tools via EFS Pro there's an IMEI read/write option. But to unlock this I need a diagnostics pass code. Where does this come from? Is this specific to my phone or something specific to the model?

If I were experiencing this, with my limited knowledge, I would flash with Odin back to stock mdc and do a full factory reset. If after that there wasn't any network connection, I'd call Sprint customer service number from a land line and ask them to walk me through programming the phone properly. I'd probably tell them the phone kept freezing up so I did a full factory reset and now the phone refuses to connect on the network. Maybe something unknown happened and something got erased during the reset and needs to be entered manually again. I'm not saying this is what you need to do but I'm saying that this is what I would do if it happened to me. I do not claim to know what I'm talking about either but it sounds like the most logical thing to me to do.
Because we didn't get a full restore for this it may be an issue.
I'll see if I can make a better package to hopefully fix that.
Bump, is there no fix for this yet?
This is why you do a efs back up

In the meanwhile,
Read this.its for an S2,but the same concept applies.

Solution
Just flash old MDC tar such L720VPUAMDC_L720SPTAMDC_L720VPUAMDC_HOME.tar.md5
You should get signal back
then use DFS Tool to restore MEID & ESN & IMEI if you lost then.

Agreed. Whenever I have imei problems I reflash the modem, when you do this it rebuilds the NV files and such.
If you still feel like you need the Service Mode Menu you may need to navigate to efs/carrier/ and edit the hiddenmenu file with a text editor to ON instead of OFF . If this doesn't work then google the subject and you will find your answers.

[HELP] I9505 has no nv_data in EFS

Hello to all. I'm trying to fix my friend's s4 i9505 because it shows that it's Baseband is Unknown and IMEI is null/null.
He told me the baseband and imei changed when he upgraded to 4.3 using wifi.
I have tried to flash stock rom but unfortunately the phone is in 4.3 so no downgrade.
I have tried flashing different modem.bin but still no avail.
He did not back up his EFS folder before upgrading to 4.3 but I still looked at the folder anyway.
I noticed that inside the EFS folder, there is no nv_data.bin and md5 file which is I think needed for the IMEI.
Is there a free way of recovering these files?
Is this a hardware failure?
I tried the different methods on recovering IMEI in the forums but all of them involves those 2 files so I can't continue.
I have another friend who has a i9500, can I copy and use his nv_data files? (He is willing to do it BTW to help my friend)
FYI: WIFI, Bluetooth and other functions are OK. It's just the call an text function which do not work.
Currently in JB 4.3 XXUEMJ5
No more warranty on the phone.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read our problem.

This phone isn't that old! I have only today contacted Samsung as there is nothing in my EFS folder, they are sending out a jiffy bag for me to send the phone to them to repair under warranty!
Be careful talking about swapping efs partitions from phone to phone as the mods in here get funny about it, I would try contacting Samsung to return it if you can? When did you get it?
I would suggest you do the same. I can't fix mine either.

Should I try this too? I've just seen on Samsung website that mobile phones are covered for 24 months. I've only had this 8 months.
It's weird I have imei number when I type *#06# but nothing in efs folder!

Thanks for all the replies. I tried to check it with my local technicians and all of them told me that my main board needs to be replaced.
I didn't know that a software mishap can result to a hardware failure to the extent of changing the main board.
I have tried flashing the recommended modems above but unfortunately still does not work.
I have noticed that when I type *#1234# in the Phone app, It shows me the AP and CSC and that is all written in the screen. No word modem and no modem version.
When I try to flash a firmware or a modem it says it flashed successfully but when I check the phone, still no service.
Again, wifi, bluetooth and other phone functions are working.
Technicians told me it is a "no service" unit and "cannot be fixed by software" because I have a "broken baseband/modem".
Is there really no hope for this unit?
Again any help or info is welcome.
Thank you for reading friends.
Bump
What do you want anyone here to say if you've been told by someone qualified that it needs a motherboard replacement ? In some (many ?) countries, this would be fixable by 're-writing' the IMEI to the device (either by a Samsung service centre or other repairer), but if that's not possible for whatever reason in your country & the way they fix it is a motherboard replacement, you don't really have any other option, do you ?
Edit - Attempting to move EFS files between devices normally ends up in both being blacklisted. Not recommended.
Hello,
I have exactly the same problem, with the i9505 phone version, do i have to change the motherboard or it can be fixed the "soft way"?

This happened to me a long time ago on my T-Mobile version and I tried everything I could think of but then I used the tool that you'd use to flash back to stock and flashed it to Android 4.4 and it kinda fixed it so now it doesn't restart much might restart every 20 minutes I never looked at it 4 that long becauseiI bought the international version. So android 4.4 doesn't fix the null imei but now I can use my phone as a media device because it doesn't read Sim cards and at least I can connect to wife so yea

[Q] QPST and getting T-Mobile HSPA+/LTE Bands

I have a new I9505G running Kit Kat 4.4.2. It consistently gets HPSA but does not get HPSA+ or LTE even though I am in a T-Mobile LTE service area (New York City).
I called Google device support and they referred me to this Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eb0iCtG4T6I
It advises installing a phoneutil.apk on the phone and QPST on a Windows computer. I verified that the Samsung USB drivers are installed. But where I reach the step where I enter *#0808# on the phone to get to the menu where I can select DM+MODEM+ADB the procedure fails. Entering *#0808# gets me "USSD code running..." shown briefly before showing "Unable to process request" and an OK button. Without this step, the Samsung USB Modem drivers did not show under Ports in Device Manager when the phone is connected via USB. I have used the original S4 USB cord. No com ports show with 0 in the Phone column in QPST and I am led to believe that I can't install the 337_AWS.qcn file to get the additional bands.
My bootloader *is* unlocked (and the phone is rooted). I read this thread which refers to *#0808# as well. Ihttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2370466
I even tried the older *#7284# with the same result.
I'm having a similar issue with some USSD Codes. I can access *#*#4636#*#* but not *#7284# or many other USSD codes.
I have the I9505G running Android 4.4.2. It's rooted and unlocked. I installed the phoneutil.apk, but I think it's not working properly in the latest KitKat.
I did get the LTE bands working with a new SIM. Apparently mine was so old that it only supported 3G.
I know this is an old thread, but I only went through the same situation yesterday. Though it is not likely to benefit the OP, it may for someone who still owns this phone. When you set your phone to DM+MODEM+ADB, your Windows driver can no longer work with it UNLESS you have enabled CP LOGGING. Many rooted phones have for example TWRP installed to replace the stock recovery. For this exercise, you need to temporarily return to the STOCK RECOVERY to enable this option.
However, even if you overcome the Windows driver issue, you may still have challenges trying to flash the I337 AWS qcn to an I9505 phone. When I tried it yesterday, the flashing stopped at 5% into it and prompted me this error message, "received an invalid command from the phone" or something like that.
Since I have previously backed up my existing config to an XQCN file, I tried to restore this file just to see what would happen. Again, it failed at 5% with the same error. Why would the phone reject an XQCN generated from itself?
Worry not! When it fails at 5%, you will get your radio back simply by rebooting. No harm has been done.
In summary, even though I could get QPST fired up and create a backup, I am not able to write a QCN to an I9505. If anyone has successfully done it, plz share your experience. Thank you

[Q] How to Restore IMEI?

Hello all, I tried the 4.4 nandroid from the development section which was supposed to update my 16gb phone to 4.4. The phone does in fact run 4.4 now but refuses to connect to any mobile networks and says the IMEI Is invalid. Upon going into settings and checking the status, the IMEI shows as unknown.
I have looked for a solution to this but I cannot get this phone into diagnostic mode no matter what I try. Can anybody guide me into fixing my IMEI? I am not trying to change the IMEI for a new one I just want to restore the original IMEI so the phone can work again.
Please help me.
