Wanted to create a official thread to keep track of any possible root progress for the Snapdragon Note 8-
I think I saw link to engineering software in another forum and if that is right, there is a good chance we will have root, however it took quiet few months from the time engineering software was found, to getting the root on s8. Either we learned from S8 and will have root soon, or things changed again and we'll need to wait few months. I'm taking bets now.

Hope we get root. Just about when the S8+ got root, I upgraded to this Note 8.
Hope it doesn't take 6 months to get root too.

Kind of related to root. I was going to install BK package disabler, and when running it you have to agree to SE auto update nonsense from Knox. Sounded like it might interfere with root in the future, am I off base with this? Still on the fence with rooting this, but if it becomes available, I at least want to have the option.
Oh I'm definitely need this beast rooted and cleaned up and given a makeover but it's not horrible without and I've rooted every device I've owned since the g1 dropped within hours of getting it lol this is going on what 13 days...... NEED ROOT lol
even the LG V20, which i bought JOD when it came out, everyone then said it was unrootable and the bootloader is locked, 4 months later, even the vzw version has twrp .

I think it's a matter of getting raw firmware. HTC used to make the firmware public. Once the firmware was available we were able to start breaking code.
Here is more info about root https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...-discussion-snapdragon-note-8-models-t3670091

Relax and don't expect that much
MM must require new bootloader and likely we can not expect using AT&T bootloader on out international variant (Otherwise we have MM for N920T since months now)
Also there is obstacle in development till samsung release new source code otherwise PA* firmware don't allow old recovery/kernel on base bootloader.
As an AT&T customer using an international Note 5 (920i), I'm completely shocked that AT&T has even begun beta testing this before July of this year. In truth, based on AT&T's track record, I wouldn't expect their note5 variant to official receive "M" until at least October - around the same time as Verizon customers.
Hopefully someone can pull the image and we can flash it!

Seems snappier to me. Touchwiz uses a lot less memory now. Not sure about the battery life since it's been less than 24 hours.

What makes you think that TW is using less memory? There are a LOT of misconceptions about memory use in android, and having more "free" memory is usually a BAD thing (as it means things are getting needlessly terminated.)
Before the update, the TW launcher was using around 130 MB according to "Running services", after it's using around 33 MB. The Samsung keyboard was using around 60MB before and 20 MB after.

I wouldn't recommend flashing the full TAR. If you'd like a guarantee to get back, I'll be making separate flashables.
for example i'll just rip apart the tar and make an odin flashable of everything except the bootloader.

Like many rooted users that are contemplating returning the S7 due to locked bootloader, they, like you, retain a flashable rooted device.
I think Samsung just ruined a good thing for this community. I had hoped for a rooted Note 6 one day soon, but losing all hope. Samsung says the carriers wanted locked bootloaders. Sprint and T-Mobile deny that claim. They should get a room and work that out!

What Samsung has done in the past with kernels and recovery is child's play compared to the locked bootloader. It would take a vulnerability exploit or a signed key unlocked bootloader to root that unless Samsung reverses its position. They just don't own mistakes that way. Even if it's a path to destruction, Samsung will march on like a soldier.
I personally think they've come to a place where they can willingly accept the loss of a few that can't do without root. Sad; Sprint and T-Mobile claim Samsung did this. Samsung claims all carriers in US wanted locked bootloaders.

Just for what it's worth, my moto DX2 was rootable via an exploit of charging mode however to this day the bootloader remains locked down. A locked bootloader is no joke.

I could careless about the bootloader if they get root though. Which they have done before. Root but locked bootloader...I don't really modify much other then remove some stupid bloat and add in xposed for Amplify+Greenify. I can live without those things. You can root by installing TWRP using ODIN.
Updated my phone (which is not on Sprint Network as I live outside US) and must say, I'm quite impressed. There are no noticible UI changes but the system feels more snappier than before. I guess the Doze settings have been worked too because of which battery life has improved a tad bit.

Hot-spot mods of previous builds will not work. If you want, you can use pdanet or FoxiFi for it (no need of a rooted phone).
For Xposed, you can flash the zip available on XDA but you will require root for it.
PG1 source code isnt out, so developers will be behind still.

"adb logcat" on a computer while checking for the update on the phone. It will always list the update URL. It's a pretty big patch -- 376 MB. Boot and recovery are modified but no separate fastboot. So either that's been added into the normal partition commands, or it's still going to be an OTA to enable bootloader unlocking.
Can't wait to hear from the brave souls who update first have to say. I'm goign to keep my root/twrp for now

Security patch level at September 1, 'Backup account' no longer greyed out, tweeked signal strength indicator, audio no longer drops out when starting camera and probably a host of other tweeks under the hood.

Any word on a potential release date for nougat? Extremely dissatisfied with Samsungs lack of support with the U variants. Makes me want to avoid Samsung products here on out.
It makes me think that they're waiting to synchronize the S8 and S7u software releases... So perhaps the S7u will get all the S8 features before the carrier versions?
I know the SM-G930VL got Nougat today. No Wi-Fi calling or video call but it did finally get it. It's the Straight Talk unlocked version.
That's pretty pitiful when prepaid carriers get it before unlocked owners...
It's pretty stupid that an UNLOCKED version doesn't have the latest software, so dumb of Samsung to do that.
Also None of the Verizon versions of S7 has the updated firmware too, so far only T-Mobile in the US has 7.0
May be AT&T does too

someone wrote a guide for root/unroot/returning to stock rom
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...-to-notes-root-install-xposed-unroot-t3411039
Hmm, this is going to root the phone, I don't want to root it, as it will decrease it's value. I will wait for another week or two if there is no update to 7.0 I will sell it

what? no, just scroll down (bottom of first post) to where it says "return to stock" and follow the instructions there. you don't have to be rooted to install another official samsung rom. and also fwiw even if you do end up rooting you can always reinstall stock rom without tripping knox (as implied in the tutorial).

Just like he said but when you download the Verizon firmware, make sure you use CSC and not the HOME CSC when you flash. Home will keep your data but I'm not sure how it'll react coming from a different carrier.
