Instruction for TWRP, rooting and updating T-Mobile G5 H830 - T-Mobile LG G5 ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, & Other

Hi,
If this is the wrong place, please move it.
I'm new to LG G5. Bought from eBay with a modified ROM H83020i_un. Below are the steps I took to root this device and upgrade it to the latest stock Android 7 ROM
Notes about rebooting into recovery
1. Power off device.
2. Hold power and vol down button.
3. Wait until lg logo appears.
4. Release power button only for one second while continuing to hold vol down. After the second elapsed press and hold the power button until it boots into recovery.
Click to collapse
Notes
NEVER use Settings -> factory reset. It will end up in TWRP loop
If you ended up in TWRP loop, never wipe misc partition. It will result in MAC Address changes every time you reboot . The correct method is [FIX] Stuck in Custom Recovery [TWRP/CWM] (After trying OTA)
1. Install 20a. This is the last version I can install TWRP and root. Instruction is [STOCK][N][ARB01] H830 20A ROM + Flashable ZIPs + IMGs + KDZ. I used LG UP method and this is fairly painless
2. Unlock the bootloader, install TWRP and root. Instructions are now with TWRP!. However, the adb posted in the link can't ever trigger the Allow USB Debug prompt on the phone. I wasted 2 hours on trying all kinds of combination of settings. Eventually, I download version 1.4.3 Minimal ADB and Fastboot Tool and it worked as expected. I flashed SuperSU. And formatted the data to disable encryption. Now I have 20a with TWRP and root
3. Upgrade to the latest (20m as of now). Instructions for 20k is [STOCK][N][ARB01] H830 20k ZIPs + IMGs + KDZ (2017-07-01 Security Patch), following Install via TWRP Directions -> Stock ROOTED. I had to do quite a bit reading to make sure the correct step (keep TWRP and root).
autoprime's post https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72537357&postcount=21
recovery-from-boot.p is contained in the system partition and returns any time you flash a stock system.img (such as my COMPLETE zip).. so if you were on, for example, 20f and then renamed/deleted recovery-from-boot.p.. and then flash 20i COMPLETE zip.. you would have to rename/delete the file again... and when you flash the next update you'll have to do it again etc. The reason I leave this file inside the system file is because I'm providing 100% stock images so users can go back to 100% stock or mod/customize things to their liking.
Click to collapse
There is also another advice from him in https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73343155&postcount=40
am now suggesting people wipe cache after flashing my COMPLETE zip but before they flash a root zip. This may help with the random people who seem to lose TWRP after flashing Magisk/SuperSU.
Complete zip -> wipe cache -> flash root zip -> finished
Click to collapse
So I followed the TWRP stock rooted step. Wipe cache -> flash complete zip -> wipe cache -> flash SuperSU zip -> Mount system -> File Manger rename /system/recovery-from-boot.p to /system/recovery-from-boot.p.bak. Reboot (no need to format data)
To get into TWRP, you would need to boot into recovery, and choose Yes twice (it won't reset your device)
4. Disable OTA update as it will break my phone.
The instruction is in LG G5 ALL-IN-ONE THREAD in the section of "Disable OTAs". I've also found another method which was posted for G4 but the menu is also available in G5 at https://www.androidexplained.com/lg-g4-disable-ota-updates/
Hidden Menu Method
Launch the Dialer Application
Enter the Following Code to Access the Hidden Menu. . .
277634#*#
. . .Then Scroll Down and Tap on ‘WiFi Test’
Tap on the ‘OTA Setting’ Option
Then Tap on the Big ‘Disable’ Button
Reboot the LG G4
Click to collapse
It contains some other methods but none worked on non-root devices.
On rooted device, I can find LG Update Center and FOTA and disabled them.
However, Google Play Service still show the notification for Android System Update. The only option is to disable notification from it.
Hopefully, this is helpful

[Q] Claro 801/803 stock firmware flash question

I have a Claro D801/803 which has been through hell and back with a QHUSB 9008 error -> 9006 error (without the right IMG files) and now finally I have achieved download mode.
Now if any of you gents can tell me how to go from here to Cloudy or CM (as in - which files to use), it will be much appreciated. I'm really really scared of flashing the wrong thing again. The Claro phone is extremely fragile...
Also two worrisome questions :
1. will this phone be carrier locked the moment I flash the kdz ?
2. Is this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476 - the way to flash. In which case, should I choose CDMA in the flash tool as well as "Korean" as language. The instructions on that page are not entirely clear.
For the benefit of those who may have the same question about the Claro 801/803, here are the steps to follow. First - save a nandroid backup and also backup your photos, music, etc. Also check if you are starting from Jellybean or Kitkat.
1. Install Towelroot and just click the button to root. Reboot (even though it says you dont need to)
2. Download TWRP 2.8 from here. Unzip the zip file to get an IMG file. Put this on your phone.
3. Install "Flashify" from play store. Click the button that says "Install Recovery", then select "From file" and point it to the IMG file you put on your phone in step 2.
4. Reboot.
5. Check if recovery is working - the way to do it is simple. Power off your phone -> press "Vol-Down + Power button" until it shows a screen saying "Press power button for factory reset". At this point press power button THREE times. If you have the recovery installed, it will boot to TWRP recovery... otherwise your phone will factory reset and you will lose your pictures (so make sure your phone is backed up).
At this point you are ready to install ROMS !!
There are two main ROMs for the LG G2 right now - the Cyanogenmod 12 Lollipop and the Cloudy G3. The CM12 ROM can work on Jellybean baseband/radio while the Cloud ROMs need Kitkat Basebands/Radio. Now, at this point I decided to not flash Kitkat based basebands because ... well, I might as well wait for Lollipop to flash the updated baseband.
so I decided to go with CM12 - and flashed the CM12 ROM and gapps.

[Complete Guide] SHIELD Tablet K1 Root, Custom Rom and Xposed Framework

Hello Guys,
At first a little background story:
I bought the Tablet 3 Month ago. I have got the Update to Android 6.0 in January and unfortunately, I applied it.
So If you don't want to apply a custom rom do not update to 6.0, because 5.1.1 is much better.
I am not responsible if anything goes wrong.
Ok, so let's get started:
At first you must install Minimal ADB and Fastboot on your PC/Laptop/Mac.
Windows: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
Linux/Mac: http://rootmygalaxy.net/install-adb-and-fastboot-on-mac-or-linux/
Here is the link for all OSs: http://lifehacker.com/the-easiest-way-to-install-androids-adb-and-fastboot-to-1586992378
Before you can Root or flash a Custom Rom you must flash the recovery:
You will need:
-Nvidia Family Drivers(Extract it in a folder of your choice): http://nvidiashieldzone.com/files/shieldtv/shieldfamilydriver.zip not working anymore, official link:
http://developer.download.nvidia.com/mobile/shield/SHIELD_Family_WHQL_USB_driver_201801.zip
-As many of you are experiencing problems with my previously mentioned TWRP 2.8.7.3 version I am replacing the link with the official TWRP Shield Tablet Download Site. Just take the newest stable version: https://dl.twrp.me/shieldtablet/ (Put the file into the ADB+Fastboot Folder)
-TWRP 2.8.7.3 Recovery(Put the file into the ADB+Fastboot Folder): Download URL: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24269982087009777
Developer Post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/shi...recovery-twrp-2-8-7-0-touch-recovery-t3257172

Windows:
Open your Device Manager
If there Is a device with a yellow ! klick on it and update the Drivers Manually(select the Folder where you extracted the Family Divers)

Troubleshoot
If you are stuck in a Bootloop:
Without data loss(e.g. when you installed Xposed framework zip and its stuck in a bootloop)
1. flash the stock rom boot image BUT ONLY IF YOU DONT USE A CUSTOM ROM (it will probably loose root). go to https://developer.nvidia.com/gameworksdownload#?search=SHIELD Tablet K1&tx=$additional,shield and download the latest NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet K1 Recovery OS Image
2. Unpack the zip file and flash it to your Tablet
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
If something went wrong while flashing a custom rom (after that you will need to flash the custom/stock rom again)
wipe the /data partition. It could be encrypted from the previous rom. Be aware that you need to reinstall the rom, therefore loose all your data. Troubleshot guide by agentbob123

My tablet just keeps rebooting to the lock screen whenever I try to go to recovery mode... Somehow twrp doesn't stick... It did when I was on Lollipop. I have already tried to flash the recovery, do a full reboot before trying to get in twrp but without success.
On mac
You dont need any drivers
(For every fastboot command in ADB+Fastboot you will need a ./ in front of it...)
example being ./fastboot oem unlock

Try other TWRP versions like 2.8.7.0 or 2.8.7.1 i think the 3.0.0.0 is for Andoid 6.0 devices so if you are currently in the newest version of the Android OS try this one out
The 3.0 versionof TWRP was unstabel on my device so you should flash it wipe the storage and flash one of the older ones

Try your normal command line for flashing recovery except change flash to boot. It doesn't flash it, just boots to it.
In other words, if you are using:
1. Fastboot Flash recovery recoveryname.img
Do instead:
2. Fastboot boot recovery recoveryname.img
While in recovery (make sure the supersu zip is on the sd card or wherever you normally flash files from first) flash supersu. You should now be rooted but without a recovery.
Go then to delete the file and then reboot, flash the recovery as normal (#1), reboot and then it should be good to go. It was for me.
rooted device no need to unlock bootloader it will unlock for ittself
just go to playstore and dowload twrp manager
choose the name of your device
and choose one of the two versions available
for shield tablet the version 3.0.0.0 doesnt work well it spilts the screen but wthe other version Works great
the link is twrpmanager on play.google
this way you dont need to connect your tablet to your pc
Great work!
Thank you for the awesome guide. Besides deleting the TegraOTA apk, is there any other app/service that I should disable to prevent OTA updates?
Followed the guide after screwing my device up with official firmware. Thanks for nothing Nvidia, why are you offering OTA that cause the device to stop working correctly.
Nothing happened other than appearing to boot itself to the "powered by android" (kernel) screen over and over.
Held down power + volume UP ...
And it factory reset itself.
Somehow.
Did I mention that Nvidia is a terrible company?
Edit: Fixed using TWRP v3.0.0 - this guide should be updated to reflect this particuarly as people who screw their device up after trusting Nvidia OTA MM will be using it.

I'm sorry that you had that problem but this guide is a general guide and not an screw nvidia (besides they are awesom giving us a really good tablet for 200 Buck, but jea?) guide. TWRP v3.0.0 has his bugs so generally when you have finished deleting the stock rom you should flash TWRP 2.8.7.3 works the most stabel.

Thanks, i appreciate that
Add TWRP to M image (Shield 1.1)
Folks,
Just received Nvidia Shield K1 and OTA immediately upgraded it to M (Shield 1.1) and I unlocked bootloader no problem. However when I go to flash or temp boot twrp 2.x or 3.x it flashes OK, but when I reboot (either via fastboot or hard off/start to recovery manually) it appears it is overwriting the recovery partition and it just boots normally.
Is there a limitation to flashing twrp bootloader in M, and do I have to downgrade to L to flash recovery partition?
I seem to be happy w/ stock (limited stick time), I just want to root at this point and install my favs. Once I get this running will supersu pro preserve root, or do I need to turn off nvidia OTA process.
Also I see optimization for chrome, does this do anything X1 optimizations)?
Thanks

After you flash twrp reboot to recovery. I may be wrong, but I think the stock ROM overwrites the custom recovery at reboot. If you reboot to twrp first after flash, twrp will disable this.

Rooting
Hi everyone,
Yesterday got my new Nvidia Shield Tegra K1 and upon using it I noticed it's a great tablet for it's price range and will do my job easier while flying my Phantom 4. To be honest it's seems very stable and solid but was thinking about rooting it. I have some questions regarding the process wince I haven't rooted anything since my HTC Fire, log time ago that was. What are the benefits of rooting this device ? Will I still be able to update the Shield with its official updates ? Will I be able to roll back to an unrooted tablet should I need too ? I wasn't planning on flashing a custom rom but if I'll do what are the pros and cons of doing so ? I know that maybe searching this forum I would find all the answers needed but since there is so much information and threads I'm lost as from were to start from.
Would be nice to guide me about how to properly root my device with all the necessary links. My tab is running on Android 6.0.
I thank you so much guys for the hard work you all do in providing such information. I know it takes a lot of time and patience.
I just got a Shield K1. I like it a lot but I wanted to root it. Then I saw how confusing it is to distinguish between it and the previous model. My guess is whatever is out there that says Shield Tablet means the old one not the K1. I also updated mine to MM cause I'm using and 128GB micro sd card for internal storage. I guess I'll just have to wait until more support comes out for this tablet such as a stable TWRP 3.0 Recovery and the ability to gain root access and custom ROMs like CM 13.
do you recommed to install all OTAs before install custom recovery and custom roms or is it better to install twrp-2.8.7.1 out of the box and then go for the custom stuff ?
I would install all updates to get the latest bootloader. Do not install twrp 2.8.7.1. Install the official 3.0.x from the official site.

20f is the second official Android 7.0 Nougat update from LG! 20f has patched the dirty cow bug which methods like recowvery and dirtysanta used for root. If on 20c or higher and you want TWRP/root you'll have to downgrade to 20a using LGUP + UPPERCUT + 20a KDZ then once back on 20a you can use recowvery to install TWRP and then once you're in TWRP you can flash SuperSU.. this 20f COMPLETE zip.. other custom ROMs.. etc.

Install Directions:
Click button below to view install directions to update to 20f w/LG Bridge, LGUP (KDZ) or TWRP-flashable ZIPss.
For no root/100% stock just flash the KDZ. Flash KDZ with either LG Bridge or LGUP. LG Bridge downloads and flashes the KDZ automatically but can be weird/buggy. LGUP requires downloading 20f KDZ file yourself but it's pretty simple after that. If you have TWRP and want to keep it or want root then you'll want the zip files.
LG Bridge Directions:
Click button below to view steps
1. Download/install LG Bridge for Windows or Mac.
2. Launch LG Bridge and connect G5 while it is still booted in Android.
3. LG Bridge will detect and connect to your device then scan for updates. Update if available.
LGUP Directions:
Click button below to view steps
1. Download the following three(3) files on Windows PC (Windows only. Mac/Linux? Use a Windows Virtual Machine):
LGUP_Lab_Frame_Ver_1_14.msi
UPPERCUT
Latest LG Windows PC drivers
2. Download KDZ. Install LGUP 1.14 and LG USB drivers if not already installed.
3. Turn OFF device then place in Download Mode: Hold Volume Up while plugging in USB cable.
4. Double-click the UPPERCUT.exe to load LGUP...
How-to use LGUP and flash software:
Select device
Check BIN File box under File Type then select KDZ file
Check "Upgrade" box in center of program to keep data. Use "Refurbish" to run a factory reset and wipe all data.
Click START button to flash file to G5 (you may have to close and reopen LGUP before being able to hit Start)
Install via TWRP:

Below are options for flashing zips in TWRP... if you want stock unrooted system w/TWRP(A) or stock rooted(B).. which will fail on SafetyNet check.
SafetyNet now checks for unlocked bootloader. A custom kernel is needed to bypass that.
To flash the 20f ZIPs you need the new TWRP 3.0.2-1.img from jcadduono and your bootloader unlocked.
If on M... See Tungkick's H830 Root Thread for info on obtaining unlocked bootloader status + TWRP. If on stock 20f and want TWRP/root... unlock your bootloader then you can install TWRP using the info here from z28james.
A. Stock Unrooted w/ TWRP.
You need the COMPLETE zip + either the no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip OR boot repack zip.
Data unncrypte users: Use no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip. Those keeping data encryption: boot repack zip.
If you don't want TWRP/root and don't want to use a KDZ.. flash the COMPLETE zip by itself.
Click the button below to view steps
1. Download files and place on G5 internal or external SD card.
Have encrypted data and no external sdcard? ADB Sideload in TWRP.
LG-H83020f-Flashable.COMPLETE-ARB01.zip
no-verity-opt-encrypt-4.1.zip.Thanks to @jcadduono!
android-boot-repack.zip. Thanks to @jcadduono!
2. (re)Boot into TWRP
3. Install the COMPLETE ZIP + noverity/bootrepack ZIP:
LG-H83020f-Flashable.COMPLETE-ARB01.zip (Install > select zip > swipe to confirm/flash)
no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip OR android-boot-repack.zip (Install > select zip > swipe to confirm/flash)
After zips finish flashing you can reboot! If TWRP asks if you want to install SU, hit no. If TWRP says No OS installed, ignore it.
B. Stock ROOTED. SafetyNet FAILS.
This is the default root method for M. Flashing the SuperSU zip which repacks the boot.img for systemless root.
SafeyNet fails due to bootloader unlock being detected. You'd need to unroot and relock bootloader to pass SafetyNet.. or you can stay unlocked by flashing a custom kernel.
Click the button below to view steps
1. Download the following two files and place on G5 internal or external SD card.
Have encrypted data and no external sdcard? ADB Sideload in TWRP.
LG-H83020f-Flashable.COMPLETE-ARB01.zip
Latest SuperSU [BETA] Thanks to Chainfire!
2. (re)Boot into TWRP
3. Install the COMPLETE ZIP and SuperSU ZIP:
LG-H83020f-Flashable.COMPLETE-ARB01.zip (Install > select zip > swipe to confirm/flash)
SuperSU zip (Install > select zip > swipe to confirm/flash)
OPTIONAL:
To be extra safe in making sure TWRP sticks (in case SuperSU doesn't repack boot or user error) you can delete the "recovery-from-boot.p" file in the root of /system and TWRP will 100% stick... boot repack or not). You can use the TWRP Mounts button mount system as RW. And use the Advanced button in TWRP to use the file manager to delete the "recovery-from-boot.p" in /system.
Personally I just flashed the COMPLETE ZIP then I flashed SuperSU SR5 ZIP then rebooted phone and all went well.
After zips finish flashing you can reboot! If TWRP asks if you want to install SU, hit no. If TWRP says No OS installed, ignore it.

FAQ:
Click button below to view FAQ
Q: I don't care about root or TWRP.. do I have to worry about this fuse stuff?
A: Nope, if you don't want root or TWRP just use LG Bridge or LGUP to upgrade to stock 20f and keep it movin'. But you can still root on 10A/D/i/J and 20a.
Q: LGUP isn't working because ________ what should I do?
A: This isn't the LGUP thread. Try the LGUP G5 thread here.
Q: Anti-Rollback 01? What does this mean?
A: It means if you flash 20f you can't flash anything lower than anti-rollback (ARB) v01. 10A was v00. If you manage to flash 10A bootstack (bootloader/modem) after already being on 10D/10i/20a you will brick. If I had to guess... LG/T-Mobile did this to stop people from using the custom 10A TOT that installs TWRP. Just don't flash any 10A files and you're fine (as of Jan 17 2017.. can't predict future builds...)
Q: Why does the boot.img need to be repacked?
A: boot.img is repacked for systemless root. You also need to repack the boot.img to stop TWRP from getting replaced with stock recovery the first time you boot into android after installing a new system/boot. A patch file in the system.img checks the boot.img and if it's 100% stock it builds and flashes a stock recovery image... and this would replace TWRP. So to keep TWRP and keep a stock system.img you just repack the boot.img with either the verity/encryption zip or the boot repacker zip. If you don't care about keeping TWRP none of this matters.
Q: How do I know if /data and /sdcard are encrypted?
A: If you never used TWRP and wiped/formatted data then you have encrypted data. Have TWRP and aren't sure? Boot into TWRP and try to browse /data or /sdcard... if both are empty then you are encrypted. Can you see stuff in /data and /sdcard? Then your data is not safe and not encrypted(but at least you can see files in TWRP, right?...).

Thanks!
Coming from Rooted Stock 20C. Flashed according to TWRP ROOT Install with failed SafteyNet. No problems at all.
Thanks Autoprime, you're the best!!
Thank you. I have been waiting for this.

Great work, Autoprime, as usual. Much appreciated.......
I'm on h83020a with bootloader unlocked, rooted with supersu 2.7.4 and I have TWRP 3.0.2... If I want H83020f rooted, I can just follow the "B. Stock ROOTED. SafetyNet FAILS." instructions, right? (I will delete the recovery-from-boot.p file just to be sure).
If it's that simple, this is great news!! If I back up "all system apps + user data" in Titanium Backup on H83020a before I install, I suppose I won't be able to restore them on H83020f without problems?
It's a PITA that one cannot boot into TWRP on the LG G5 without wiping/formatting data... Would prefer to do a nandroid backup before wiping all data.

Yes it's that simple.
And you can boot into TWRP without wiping data. I assume you're referring to the factory reset screen shown when you boot I to recovery with the hardware buttons? Factory reset only happens of on stock recovery... If TWRP is installed it doesn't actually do the factory reset.
Or you could just boot into TWRP from within Android and skip that screen entirely... adb reboot recovery

Oh, I didn't know that... So I can just boot into TWRP from adb using the "adb reboot recovery" command? That's fantastic! ------------EDIT: That worked of course!! :good::laugh: Awesome... Now I can backup everything before upgrading to H83020f.
Thanks so much for your work!!
EDIT:
Ok... so I went for it. It worked perfectly just as @autoprime said! No problems whatsoever... :good:
First I backed up my apps + data in Titanium Backup and did a Nandroid backup in TWRP, then I placed the "LG-H83020f-Flashable.COMPLETE-ARB01.zip" and the "SR3-SuperSU-v2.79-SR3-20170114223742.zip" on my external sd card. I decided to try to flash the update over the H83020a rom to see if it worked or not.
So... I Renamed the "recovery-from-boot.p" in /system to "recovery-from-boot.bak" and rebooted into TWRP via adb as suggested above (adb reboot recovery) after turning usb debugging mode on in developer mode options of course... In TWRP I chose cancel when asked to enter PIN and on the next screen I swiped when asked if you want to allow system modifications.
Then, just as described above, I chose Install, found the LG-H83020f-Flashable.COMPLETE-ARB01.zip and swiped to confirm/flash.
Then I chose SR3-SuperSU-v2.79-SR3-20170114223742.zip and swiped to confirm/flash.
I did not wipe dalvik or cache. Then I chose reboot --> System and the phone booted up half way, then rebooted again and started updating to H83020f.
So far all my apps and + data seem to be intact. And I am now on H83020f and I am still rooted!!! :victory:
I had to uninstall and reinstall my current icon pack and disable and restart the firewall and they both work as before now, but apart from that... everything looks like it's working exactly like it was before the install.
Thanks again @autoprime!! Awesome job! :good:
Thanks @autoprime , worked just fine as always.
Sorry for my ignorance, but I would like to know the difference between 20a, 20c, 20f, or know what to install on my device since I see that my device says H83010i MM 6.0.1 and I want to install N 7.0 but I do not know which of those It's my device
I'm on 20f already and wanted to install TWRP to get lineageos running, however I'm running into an error when I try flashing TWRP recovery. I get this error "...FAILED (remote: unknown command)".
I'm not sure why. I did OEM bootloader unlock as well as fastboom bootloader unlock, I've installed all different types of USB drivers, LG UP, LG Bridge.. everything. I have no idea what's wrong
Are you trying to install TWRP directly from 20F? You can't. You have to revert to 20A, then run some exploits to install TWRP, then go from there.
Even though the bootloader is unlocked, it's not really. Lots of hoops to jump through to root or flash an alternate recovery.

Ok i understand. I'll revert to 20a, use exploits, do what i want, and then reinstall 20f modem (and bootloader too? or leave that out?)
You'd want to install basically the complete .zip for 20F once you're done getting TWRP, which includes all the parts except the recovery. The phone really does not like mixing bootloaders, modems, systems.
Then you can decide if you want to root or not. You should also decide if you care about your /data partition being encrypted or not. It'll default to encrypted.
(Obviously LG backup your data first--it's actually a good stock app for real backups without root).

I was actually planning on installing Lineage instead. So would the process be flash 20a -> exploit -> flash TWRP -> flash 20f (minus recovery) -> flash Lineage?
Ahh, that's right. If it were me, I'd update to the latest bootloader/modem. So what you listed above is correct!
When I try to install LG-H83020f-Flashable.COMPLETE-ARB01.zip, TWRP says there is no md5 file found and then says the zip file is corrupt. How can I fix this?

Change DNS settings
If the above tips did not work for you, its time to take things to the next level. If the Galaxy S7 is the only device in your Wi-Fi network to suffer from slow speeds, you can try changing the DNS server used on the handset.
For this, you will first have to make the device forget the existing Wi-Fi network. Then, tap on its name to join again, but before you enter the password, tap on ‘Show advanced options.’ Now proceed to tap ‘IP Settings’ and select ‘Static’ from the list. Leave other IP settings as they are, and simply enter the DNS server you’d like to use in the DNS text field area. You can try using Google DNS first (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) or OpenDNS (208.67.222.222) to see if they fix the Wi-Fi woes on your S7 or not.

You are now running systemless root
Refer to MaxLee Video on Rooting S7 with Magisk - Guide
Did you manage to root the G930W8 on nougat 7.0 build with this method? I've had nothing but problems attempting to root for the last few days. Tried cf-auto root and this magisk method early on in my attempts with no success. I've just fine a full clean build flash and restore and would really like to root but am worried I'm just going to get no where again and spend hours getting back to where I'm at now...

Yes. Refer to second post. I'm now running the latest nougat with magiskv14 systemless root. Its better that way, I can still use snapchat and banking applications.

Having trouble as well.
I get message "integrity check failed" after flashing magisk via twrp a step 11 then makes me reset the phone but because of the custom recovery it only bootloops.
Then i restart the whole process again only to stop at step 11.
Is there a step i'm missing?
Start all over again, but on step 11 follow this.
Try it this way:
When you boot up to TWRP, swipe allow modification. Flash MagiskV14.zip, then if it says install TWRP app, press "do not install".
If you have problem seeing files wipe DATA and then reboot to recovery again using TWRP, select SDCARD as storage then flash MagiskV14.zip
I tried it but i accidentally let the phone reboot after flashing twrp and it failed the integrity check and started bootlooping. I entered recovery and grabbed the log which i attached here.
So I did the steps again but used this steps from the other guide for exynos models
At this point, you will reach the screen asking you if you want to allow system modifications.
By swiping right, you will trigger dm-verity, and if you don't follow the next step you will be unable to boot!
If you are going to root your device and follow the rest of these steps, then it is safe to swipe right and enable modifications.
If you want to use Systemless DevBase, then do not swipe. Keep it as read only.
Go to Wipe and click on format data. Type "yes" and it will format.
Now go back to home and click on "Reboot" then click on "Recovery" Option.
Then went from step 11 here and what you said to flash magisk and it worked.
My phone is finally debloated.
I tried your steps many times but everytime it's failing. Everytime it fails when installing "system". I've tried with different CSC version firmwares but it failed with each one of them. I', 100% sure that it is G930W8 S7 Flat because it was running on the same version of custom ROMs.

I almost soft bricked my s7 which was working perfectly before applying the patch. It was giving me dm-verity error at boot...
I was able to flash it back and make it working using full stock rom.
I highly recommend readers to NOT apply the above Magisk Root on their G930W8 (S7).

I just want to confirm this, since it's not explicitly mentioned in the post... When you root it trips KNOX, which locks you out from Disconnect Pro, Samsung Health, and Samsung Pay. Does this also mean that Android pay will not work either? Or does this method allow for Android pay to work?
If not, is there a workaround yet?

There are many reports on the XDA forums that Android Pay works with Magisk systemless root and with tripped Knox on S7 (as opposed to Samsung Pay which will not work once Knox is tripped).

I followed these directions exactly but when I boot into TWRP and attempt to install the Magisk.zip I recieve the following errors stating "could not mount /data partition" then causing the phone to bootloop until I flash the stock firmware again.
Why is this happening?

My phone is finally debloated.

can you clarify(link to) what combination of steps you used to achieve a successful root? I havent attempted again since my last attempt but it sounds like you had some success. If you'd share it'd be really helpful and appreciated. Would really like to get root back on my phone
also just to clarify, I'm on nougat 7.0 with security patch Nov 1, 2017
Thanks

If its first time TWRP installation then you need to Format data (Caution: Format data will format the Phone internal storage and you need to backup files first if you have in phone storage like photos video and etc) After formatting data it Will allow to read and write the data partition). Further once you Flash TWRP then Super SU or Magist (Root) is compulsory to boot normal unless its bootloop
Any of you recommend holding off on the root till the Oreo update? Also, does rooting change the kernel to a different one? I wanna avoid battery/performance issues if I can by staying on the stock kernel.

upgrade to Android Q & keep twrp and data

Ok here's what I did. To keep my data and twrp when upgrading from "P" to " Q".
1. I downloaded the OTA zip file.
2. Extracted it on your phone.
3. Edit the "Flash-all.bat" file
A. Delete "-w" from one of the last command lines.
B. Add "reboot-bootloader"
"fastboot boot twrp-3.2.3.1-marlin.img"
C. Hit "save"
C. Both the above command lines should be right
before the line "echo press any key to exit"
4. Add the twrp.img to the folder with the above extracted contents.
5. Edit "flash-all.sh" to read the same as you have just edited the "flash-all.bat" file. And then hit "save".
6. Compress the extracted file so as to create a .zip file again.
7. Move this .zip file to your PC.
8. Plug up your phone to your PC and make sure android debugging is active.
9. On your PC extract the .zip file you just created.
10. Make sure you have the twrp installer zip on your phone.
11. Go into the extracted .zip file and double click the "flash-all.bat" windows batch file and sit back and wait.
12. When it finishes it will boot up. 1 out 3 times I tried this it booted then immediately rebooted to the stock recovery with an error saying that my data may be corrupt and if I see this message again then perform a factory reset. And gave me to options "try again" and "factory reset". I clicked "try again". It then booted normally.
13. Power off your phone.
14. While holding vol down press and hold power button for a few seconds and then release the power button but NOT the vol down button. This will put you in bootloader mode.
15. Once in bootloader mode it will then boot twrp.
16. Once once twrp loads click install then navigate to the folder you put the twrp installer.zip and flash the installer. 17. Hit "reboot system"
18. Sit back and wait.
19. All your data will remain on the phone. All your settings stayed the same.
***********NOTICE ***********
1. YOUR BOOTLOADER MUST BE UNLOCKED. IF YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO DO THAT THEN YOU SHOULDNT BE ATTEMPTING THIS. ESPECIALLY IF YOU ASK ME HOW TO UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER.
2. I TRIED THIS 3 DIFFERENT TIMES WITH THE SAME RESULTS. I will post pics of the step by step process later. Just wanted to go ahead and get this out there so those of you who know your way around an android could do it.
3. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS.
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU F'ING THIS UP AND NOT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS TO A "T".
4. THIS IS RISKY BUT IF YOU FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY YOU SHOULD HAVE NO ISSUES.
Im also posting a pic of my about phone to show I am indeed on "Q" and that this worked for me.
Hope you enjoy
Be patient I'll have step by step screen shots posted in a little bit of the process. To maybe make it easier to understand.
Could this work for official android 10
Very nicely explained, thank you.
Please excuse me if this is a stupid question, but why not just extract and edit on your PC instead of on the phone then transfer to PC?
Did you try flashing magisk?
Thanks for letting us know latest twrp works. But did you try to get root @mattwheat ? I am too afraid to lose data so didn't flash magisk yet.
All I did was manually flash bootloader, radio, system and vendor and it kept all my data with working twrp and root (coming from pie custom rom).

So you didn't even wipe anything? You just booted into TWRP and manually flashed the files? I'm also on a 9 custom ROM and would love to know the best/safest way to make the move to 10

no wipes
Flashed through fastboot.
Steps:
flash bootloader
reboot to bootloader
flash radio
reboot to bootloader
flash system
flash vendor
reboot to system
I was missing OTA function in settings.....
it work for me but can't guarantee it will work for everybody. Best way is to try it.
flashed q beta and went back to pie customs roms by flashing bootloader, radio, and vendor (before official q was released). Have to download all apps but internal storage stayed intact.

You're welcome. And sure you could do that I would imagine. May be easier but then I would be explaining a method I did not actually try. And that would suck if by chance some ones phone caused world's to collide. I would feel pretty bad about that. Unless the end result was Nancy pelosi shutting up and resigning.

I did not have root after flashing twrp.... Seems like, looking back, that I tried and seems like it may have said "successful" but it didn't stick upon reboot. But I imagine it's neither here nor there cuz y'all prolly have root by now...
