brand new s8, questionable battery life - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

guys i played with my new snapdragon s8 last night for like 2-3 hours and set everything up and i love it!
the only worry is so far the battery drain is a little more than i would like compared to my exynose S7 Edge. I have all the same apps and accounts setup now on my s8, and just in the few hours i played with it last night the battery drain was more than the s7e was in the past with that same medium/high brightness and watching a lot of videos and installing apps.
then last night, my new s8 on AIRPLANE mode overnight lost about 10-11% battery life which seems too much on airplane mode, my s7e exynos would loose only a few % overnight on airplane mode.
maybe the phone battery needs to calibrate for a few days? maybe the OS needs to optimize itself more? idk. but right now its morning here and im going to charge it too 100% and see how it fares throughout my work day

When you first get a phone, it'll use a lot more battery until it is fully set up and settled in. I give my new phones at least a week to properly settle before I make any judgement on the battery life.
Remember, you've downloaded, lots of apps, synced accounts and various bits. Give it a few days before you worry about it

Turn off Samsung backup.

cool ill figure out how to do that and try it

Give it a couple days and update us again - you can also use AccuBattery for a more detailed statistic.
~10% overnight with airplane mode is truly a lot. You should be getting about 1% overnight drain after the phone settles.

I get about 3 hours of SOT if i'm lucky on mine. I play a lot of BT Spotify in my truck as i'm in and out of my vehicle all day long. I was hoping for better, I even followed the guide to disable a bunch of the packages etc thinking i'd get more and didnt raise it any.

Samsung Backup only starts when your phone is charged.

set your phone according to the debloat recommendations here https://www.xda-developers.com/the-...r-community-radically-improved-my-experience/ and you'll be over 5 hours SoT, my battery life was poor to but this link really helped.

Do you have Greenify installed? It caused issues for me in terms of impacting negatively on battery life, i uninstalled it and saw big improvement.

Galaxy Note 4 Battery Rapid Battery Drain

Hello, I purchased a Korean (I live here atm) Galaxy Note 4 about three weeks ago and have been experiencing extremely rapid battery drain.
Initially, upon unboxing I noticed that I'd get about 2 hours max screentime with 3G browsing usage before the phone would power down. As a result, I brought it to the Samsung store in Seoul last week and they gave me a new battery. However, the new battery appears to have changed little, though I was getting up to three hours screentime maximum afterwards, so that was a marginal improvement.
Yesterday I did a factory wipe and reset the phone, deleted all the unnecessary apps, and reinstalled just the basic extras one at a time to see if that would improve things.
Today I took it off charge and noticed the drain is still noticeable. When browsing websites OFF the charger cable I see the power drop by 1% every 3-4 minutes. Is this normal? I calculate I'd get between 4-5 hours of power at constant browsing at this rate, which would be fine if spread over the day, but the other issue is that even on standby the battery usage is noticeable.
Even following the factory reset I notice that besides from the obvious "Screen" power usage, "Android System" is one of the biggest drains on the battery. Currently it is using between 25-30% of power, and if you look at the sleep log on the battery (See attached) you'll notice it waking lots even with screen OFF. So it seems there are some extremely battery intensive processes that are going on all the while in the background. And when I click on the Android Services battery breakdown, I get about a five page list of processes that are running (also attached), which really does seem excessive for an operating system alone. Could it just be lots of network installed bloatware?
Unfortunately, Samsung told me that past Monday I'd have no chance to bring the phone back for a refund, so now it seems I'm left with fixing it myself or selling it.
As a Note 2 owner who relied on the great battery life I am very disappointed with this.
I'd really appreciate any suggestions for getting to the bottom of this -- or figuring out if there i simply a hardware fault at play here.
Here is the long list of Android System processes I've got running:
Root your phone and control your awake events by App Ops, Amplify, maybe Greenify.
Bloatware sucks. I deactivated almost everything and it works for the moment! But root will be the only way to get more Performance. S health for example i a battery drainer....

Thanks: how many processes are running in your Android system now you rooted?
Is this the solution? Because obviously if I root, then it makes getting an exchange even more complicated..
Can you tell me how to take a large screenshot? I will post u the process list. My device is not rooted. I will wait to be sure that my hardware is ok.
Thanks. I actually had to make that in Photoshop. It took five individual shots.
Quick update at end of the day.
13 h phone on with 3h45 screen and I'm left with 3% battery.
Is this really the best a thousand dollar phone can do?
Chad you have to many apps in your notification bar! Check this apps pls if they are running all the time. Is this a snpadragon device? Display @ auto brightness disable all nfc / smartstuff
---------- Post added at 02:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:36 PM ----------
That's what i disabled [emoji6]
Not sure what those apps are as they are not visibly running.... i feel the issue may be related to the sheer amount of bloatware the korean providers bundle into the system...
Is there any tool to do an optimum battery test so I can figure out if it's software?
Wakelock detector but u need root.
Dude go to appsettings and start disabling all that bull**** my phone is good now. Check every app an decide to use it or not.
My note4 SM-910L from LG+ korea too
And this is my battery stat
As you can see i use airplane mode all the time. Only use wifi and battery still good ( play shadow fight, ppsspp ,... ) and sot can reach 5h easily.
Sync takes up a lot of battery
Yes but deactivating all services of a device takes all the features u pay for.
I got up to 5-6h display time on my 3rd charge.

1 day (1Tag)
Well, I'm in the Samsung Service Center again and they just updated the build of the OS, slightly different one although it's still 4.4.4
He said that would fix it, but I spent fifteen mins in the shop after getting it back and battery drained 5% already.
Yet all his diagnostic tests are coming back fine...
They're taking another look at it now, but I'm not particularly hopeful of a solution.
And as someone is suggesting: what is the point of buying these new devices if you only have to disable 95% of functionality to get decent battery life?
I'm convinced there is a hardware issue at play in mine, my two year old Galaxy Note 2 gives about 30 % batter than the brand new note 4; that can't be right!
Same problem here
Hello there i got the same problem with my rooted sm-n910k and i installed amplify and now i can see where is the battery drain . I got battery drain from :
Service Name :
com.sec.android.app.soundalive
Wakelock :
RILJ1
I will also atach some pictures to find out if you got same problem like me
I have the sm-n910k too (Korean standard one).
Since going to the shop nothing is better.
Today 14 hours of power, with about 2.5 hours of screentime (not web browsing, but mainly s-note stuff).
Is this really it?!
Is Is it because the SM 910K (Korean version) uses a different chipset to rest of the world that the battery is so poor?
The guys in the Korean Samsung Service center shop told me that the battery life I am getting is NORMAL.
But look at the attached screenshots: <13 hours. Is that really normal? If so I am very, very disappointed...

Battery life after root?

I have rooted my phone yesterday and has since then installed Amplify, Greenify, Servicely, Coolify, and Titanium backup to disable all that is considered as "bloatware" by Package Disabled Pro (which the app itself does not function on rooted devices). I can't say for sure my SOTs yet, but battery seems to be draining pretty fast for me and it heats up faster than normal when on stock. And I also did flash the fix zip for all the bugs after root.
How are all of you all phones after root and what other adjustments have any of you done?
Just an update for leaving my fully charged phone unplugged overnight, I lost 4% at a rate of 0.7% an hour over nearly 6 hours. Checked Gsam stats and I saw phone signal was using 80 something percent of the power.

I experienced the same, higher battery consumption, slower phone and it heats up pretty quickly even just being in one app for longer than 5 mins. I tried the interactive kernel and still the same. Also I had greenify, forcedoze, naptime, Amplify you name it and the phone would not enter that "doze" mode it was supposed to, something in the background was not letting the phone sleep. Also something that bothered me a lot was the lag. I haven't been able to get at least 3 hrs SOT, before root with greenify I was able to do 4.5-5 hrs SOT with normal usage. I am seriously thinking to reverting back to stock.

Aha, that sounds about right. I'm at 51% right now and it's only 2 hours of SOT. Although that's mostly because of a lot of overheating here in Orlando and playing Pokemon Go, I still see pretty fast drainage from just using any one app too.
I just flashed and 935 U and rooted the night before last,so I haven't had much time on it yet, but mine has been much better. I was about to send my phone in to have the battery replaced because I could hardly get 2 or 3hrs of sot on stock. Yesterday I used it very heavy, redownloading all my Gear VR apps and games and playing Minecraft VR for almost an hour. I did a lot of other work and downloading apps and at the end I had 4hrs of sot and still had 20% left, though I don't remember my total time on battery.
I did more adjusting today, I turned on all the Xposed options in Greenify, and greenifyed a ton of apps following the Guide for flashing U firmware, and so far I have 84% with 6hrs on time and about and hour of sot time.
I though I heard it takes a couple of days for Greenify and Amplify to learn and make adjustments. Maybe give it a few days. I am not sure if you did or not, but I have always found that it is a good idea to do a factory reset when doing major system adjustments like rooting, or major updates.

Dude, that sounds impossible to achieve 6 hours of SOT while only losing 16%. I'd like to see some screenshots of everything that you did and how you can achieve such results while using daily functions with stuff such as Facebook and all that.

Whoops.... My bad. I'd still like to know accurate battery stats and see what's his setup is though. I think I realized that my phone may be heating up too quickly because I altered the governor when I don't think I needed to after flashing @psouza4 's fix+debloat zip for my phone.
That puts in debate though, will the 935U make a huge difference in battery life?

Honest mistake, I have no comment on the other things you've mentioned unfortunately as I've decided to wait it out until things get a little more stable with the rooted firmware. First smart phone I've owned where I haven't rooted immediately after an exploit was found. I just need everything to work right now with little intervention on my part lol... smh... it's a sad sad day for me

I am at work and don't have time at the moment to go over everything at the moment, but when I will write it out and get some screenshots. I ended up with 4hrs 27mins sot last night and had 13% left. I should mention that I leave the brightness on auto, because I imagine that make's a big difference and a lot of people like their screens at max brightness.
I ended up being busy so I don't have time to mention everything tonight but here is some picture proof. It wasn't as good today, I think because I work in the basement of a hospital where the service is bad and I am constantly switching between wifi antenna's. I also realized that Amplify doesn't come pre-setup, so it wasn't doing much of anything. Tonight I set it up so I am anxious to see if it helps. I also bought better battery stats today so I can get some more detailed info. Wednesday I am off and might be able to test it better.
I will also say I have way less lag after switching to U firmware and rooting. Mine was getting pretty bad on stock. I like having more control over what I can freeze again.
My battery drain is about the same before and after root, which is 2 or 3% an hour in standby with AOD on and BT connected to Gear S2. Wifi off unless charging, nearby device scanning off, Android backup off, all of psouza4's tweaks, brightness on auto, etc. Screen-on time generally close to 5 hours if I'm indoors, which I usually am, though I never use it that long without charging it. I looked just now and with 51% charge I have 2h24m SOT and 7h30m powered on. Most of that was light use reading news and stuff.
I might try the U firmware just for fun, not to try and get better battery life.
Overall, basically no change in battery life for me according to the discharge rates (%/hr).

Yeah, something isn't cutting out for me being on root. I had much better battery life before easily achieving 1 hour of SOT by 88-90% and 3 hours of SOT by 50%. Something is really draining my phone faster than usual despite all the battery mods I did even on the U firmware.
If only I could be on the U firmware and keep the Advanced Calling and Visual Voicemail. >__>
battery life and performance issues are why I am back to stock after flashing all roms that are out there and still not worth being rooted.. I have been waiting for the better roms to come forward, but not to much support for the Verizon s7 due to the locked bootloader

Standby battery drain issue in HTC U Ultra!

Hi,
I have recently got a new HTC U Ultra from Dubai and found quick battery drain issue in it and I have to charge it twice a day. It only gives max 2 hours screen on time and even battery get drained when the phone is in standby mode. Can anyone help here, please?
Thanks in advance!
Show us battery history and battery usage per app then we could help.
Definitely not normal behavior. See battery history for potential problematic application causing the drain. If nothing can be seen you can try reset of the phone.
Join the club mate, same here brand new ultra here from Dubai.. I don't think it's good to check drain now.. is just the first week. That said try the wake lock detector app

I have reset the device and till now it seems little better as after 44 mins of screen on time I still have 81% battery left. Thanks for all the suggestions guys!
Keep in mind that in the first 5 to 10 days android does many things in background till it sets up everything. I personally start looking at battery life after the first week of usage.

I checked my device and have considerably low standby drain. Didn't measure yet, but when there is enough signal and when in WiFi, the battery holds up properly. I think 3.2 is still a little low, At least of 4 hours I expect.

S10 Plus Better battery life on wqhd

Hey guys, my s10 plus battery wasnt that great out the box I was averaging 4:30 sot that's with alot of spotify 1 hour of YouTube snapchat all day and all the social apps, I recently changed it to wqhd and not only my screen looks better my battery life is much better I'm now getting 5:30-6 hours of sot it seems like Samsung optimised the display for the battery where on my s9 plus wqhd was draining more battery but it seems to improve battery on s10, just seeing if anyone's had the same experience
Hmmm.. Let me try that. I've only used FHD on my S10 since I got it.

What I know is that you have to be patient. The internal AI will adopt to your usage and then improve your battery life. It will take 2 or 3 weeks.

Nope, that was just coincidence. Changing to WQHD+ will not improve battery life. It will reduce battery life by a very tiny amount. You must have had something else happen at the same time.
This is why comparing battry life with others is pointless, because there are just too many variables. As you have found, you can't even compare battery life with yourself without getting onconsistent results.

No reason it should take weeks to settle in. My first full day on the s10+ was 5.5 hours screen on time and still had 49% left after 16 hours. Currently on 40 hours off charger 7.2hrs sot and 17% left. This battery really is amazing but will always vary between users. Can't see how wqhd could do anything but hurt battery life but I'll run it tomorrow just to see what happens.

Thats insane. 5.5hours sot with almost 50% battery left? Surely you have turned off LOTS of features / adjusted brightness and various settings?
For me to achieve that i would need to use the phone at almost its lowest brightness and disable background activity, turn off auto sync, bluetooth, and pretty much anything else thats a battery drain!

I don't think I have that much disabled. Brightness is on auto and is often pretty bright, power saver is on medium so background data is disabled along with auto sync because I don't need push notifications. I have bixby routines turn on auto sync when charging at night to sync anything that needs it. I use Bluetooth in the car and for headphones at the gym. Probably 6-7 Bluetooth hours on that screenshot. Not much WiFi since I'm never home. Location on. Don't use bixby itself because, well, who does? It's pretty effortless really. Especially compared to my note 8 where it's nearly dead at 5 hours sot.
I'm upped the resolution on my S10 plus from the beginning and getting anywhere from 8-9 hours sot. Way better than the iPhone 10s Max I had! A lot faster too!
With a week so far of using the S10 I've gotten equal battery life with FHD and QHD. About 4.5hrs SOT and 15-19 hours up time.

Ah you have battery saver mode on. It works magic to extend your battery life. It gave me good life on my S9+ when I had it. But my logic is why did I have to have battery saver on to match the battery life that I got on my 1+6 and Pixel 2 XL?

Yeah. I've always used battery saver on every phone I've had. I'm kind of a battery life junky and when battery drains fast or when idling it bothers me. Some reason I got better life in my note 8 without saver on though. Helps on my s10 though and easily outlasts my wife's pixel 2 XL. It really all just depends on the user though. 4.5 sot is still a respectable time in my opinion especially for heavier users and about what I got on my note 8 and had no complaints. Difference now though is that I can use the s10 HEAVILY in one day and it won't die whereas my note 8 would have been dead hours before and would need a boost late in the day.

s10 plus Battery draining

I did a test and charged up to 100%, went to sleep with 100% and woke up with 93% battery..
In addition to that, my previous phone Galaxy a7 2017, could hold on 100% like 5 minutes even when using the phone, my s10 plus goes from 100 to 96 in like few mintues..
I added a screenshot from my battery usage
And cpu usage
Oh and btw, ive read about the Voip battery drain but i dont do any whatsapp calls or such..
Any help?
I put mine on airplane mode at 50% before bed wake up its 49% , I've found I get better battery life from quick hrs or so charge rather than charging through the night , also it learns your charging habits apparently , but that's a big drain poss a app is root cause do you put on airplane mode at night ?

Did you do a restore your data from a backup?
There are users reporting that restoring from SmartSwitch or Google backup can affect battery life, there is a really nice thread called battery optimisation guide you should give it a look

My phone used to be the same way, I disabled the auto optimization, that seemed to do the trick. Go to device care and hit the three settings buttons and turn it off. Huge difference.

Guys please follow this guide

Your phone should work like a charm, those devices should behave a certain way, either it is a bug or something you might be doing wrong or an app setting coming from a backup restoration.
It is a voip call, google a little. I had deep sleep for 7 days, yesterday i made a call, and since then phone didnt go to deep sleepz so i restarted it and now it is as before... It is fixed in march update. Buying a phone that costs 1000+ $ and turning 50% of options off is ridiculous.

Mine was poor but after 5 days did pick up. Had to change some settings. However, I can't put a picture on as says this feature has been disabled by your administrator. Xda app

The latest firmware update solve the VoIP CPU-lock issue. But i am still experiencing mild battery drain, when i sleep with 100% batt, i closed all apps and cleared them from the ram and still get 93% when i wake up after 8hours of idle time. No idea how to solve this, checked the CPU its on "sleep/idle" mode the entire 8hours but somehow -7% battery.
I turned off VoIP, location and put the phone to medium power saving mode. It got better.
Edit: I am not having any performance issues with medium battery saving. %70 brightness, limited CPU, FHD screen resolution.
