Calendar notifications not working - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

So my calendar notifications have been weird since the day I got my S8, they only seem to work when it feels like working..
I've just missed an appointment because I didn't get a notifications (I set 3), is there a solution?

Two things I found online, first one worked for a day or two, second one apparently did the trick:
Disable battery saving per app - you have to do this for each app you don't get notifications from
https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/fix-delayed-notifications-your-galaxy-s8-s8-0177437/
Disable Google app - apparently Google app causes problems, so you have to disable it. Just the Google app, nothing else by Google.

Also you have to check enabled notifications: Settings - Notifications - Calendar

I've started a new thread about this one.
Do you mean disable google in settings->applications->application manager->google app (it is now saying disabled on my device).
I'm curious if this is gonna do the trick. I'll try and come bazck if it does not.
I't is strange that there are not MORE people complaining about this, maybe no one uses calendar apps.

I have the same issue on my note 8, I try everything to make the calendar notifications working but nothing seems to work.
I've search for a solution all around the web but there's no way...

I'm having the same problem from day one! I hoped Oreo fw wouldn't have this problem anymore but unfortunately it's still there. It's driving me nuts!
How the hell did Samsung not fix this already? Calendar application should be one of the most important apps in a smartphone. Yet it's totally unreliable and there is no solution for this! It probably has something to do with aggressive power saving.
Anyone found a way to fix this?

My solution to this and whole lot of other notifications is disabling Doze through adb:
Code:
adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable

Well, I have the same problem, and I tried everything with samsung center, because I have J5 (2017) android 7.0 OS, but they did not help in any way. I found solution on forums, that works for me, and it is app on google play named "calendar notifier". It automaticly sinc with your calendar, and it plays any sound you choose for alarming, until you dissmiss it. It may happend that you hear 2 sounds, one from calendar it selfe, and one from calenad notifier, but you will not miss the appointment....

Any updates?
Has anyone heard of a forthcoming solution on this?
My only "fix" has been to disable the Google App except that app is how I launch commands for Google Home. Without it I cannot use my phone to take actions for my smart home devices. So it's a bit of an inconvenience for me. Plus surely there are people out there that like using the native google search capability on their phone while still getting notifications from apps.
I say from apps by the way as it's not just an issue exclusive to my calendar. When I have Google enabled it works for a while, but then will stop and many things stop. Text notification indicators, facebook notification indicators, calendar appointment notifications etc.
Do we need to be contacting Samsung support through their website or have people done this and it just doesn't help?

It's a bug in Android and it will be solved in next big update hopefully. Until then workaround is to use this app:

FANTASTIC INFO. Thank you. Glad to see it's in the works for correction. Seemed like quite a large issue to have even happened and not being repaired quickly. But I suppose I don't know the complexities of what caused this or the best solution to fix it. Just seems like a lot of people rely on calendars and appointment reminders not working would be a big **** storm for them.

Just chiming in to let you know I'm having the same problem on my Note 8! It was working for a few months and then stopped! Tried clearing cache, data, and many other "fixes" that I've since forgotten. Nothing works. Recently got the Oreo update and SAME problem!! Really annoying! Maybe it's Google sabotage?! They are trying to control everything! Btw, downloaded the Google calendar app but I don't like it!

I had used successfully the adb doze disable on command prompt but my phone just "upgraded" to Oreo 8.0.0 and now my calendar notifications have stopped working again!!! I had a functioning calendar finally but now it's gone again!!! I ran the adb command line again (adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable) but still no notifications! I cleared data, checked the app wasn't optimized and reverted to stock calendar but nothing! Does anyone know another command line to stop this doze crap in 8.0.0??? This is why I dread EVERY "upgrade"! How could they take this away from me again???!!! I used to love Samsung but now I hate it!!!

I did the device doze disable using SDK tools and this worked for months then it stopped notifications again... sometimes! Besides making calls this is the number one thing I need from my phone and it still doesn 't work! Anyone ever find a solution to this because I still need one! Using Android 8.0! I was using Calendar Events app, worked for a while then quit. Same with Calendar Notifier and Calendar Snooze app. Plus a number of other apps designed to work with the calendar. I've been relying on my calendar since my Galaxy S2!

I stopped using calendar notifications because of this issue. I have very spotty wifi and mobile data, I found that calendar notifications would only work with a data connection. Typically, I'd set a notification, but remember the appointment anyway. About 10 minutes in the car, data finally connects, the 30 minute old notification finally goes off....
It's a dismal state of affairs when the consumer becomes the software tester with such an essential device.

Well, this is weird. My Whatsapp notifications weren't working. When I set the notification in the app ,you can select the app that chooses the file eg Chomp(SMS), Audio files,Themes,Music.
Intutively, I chose Audio files, and that appears to work, but Whatsapp produced no sound on incoming messages. When I chose Chomp to select the MP3 file, it seems to work OK. I'll play a bit more and report back.
Cheers
Steve

TweetCaster has gone crazy! Any alternative Twitter app suggestion?

I have been using TweetCaster for over three years I think, it worked flawlessly for me, until now. Even when I disable app's notification, it still keeps notifying me, which is needless to say really annoying. So looking for an alternative. Could someone suggest me a simple twitter app, not with all the fancy animations or looks or anything, just a simple app with Twitlonger support and proper push notifications, that's all.
Thanks in advance.
Hi. I use tweetcaster and have no problem with it. I strongly suggest that you uninstall and reinstall it. It would be sad to have you change apps.
I have already done that, twice, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, nothing was fixed! That's why I was forced to create this topic, I don't like any other apps as well, I know I will eventually come back to it, but until the problem is fixed I am staying with official Twitter app, which is garbage, but at least there is no problem with notifications.

Notifications will sometimes arrive when launching the app

Hi guys,
my issue is easy to describe, but I really don't know how to fix it.
Problem:
Normally Whatsapp, Snapchat or what else, will give you a notification when u have a message or something like this.
But sometimes, I really dont know when, sometimes when it's cleared from recents, sometimes when it's still in recents, the "information" wont come through.
For example, when a friend of mine sends a whatsapp to my device, he just has one tick and I dont receive anything. When I open Whatsapp manually, it "loads" all the information on the server and only then gives me the notification.
So it isnt really the problem of the Notification. I think the real problem is, that because whatsapp is like in a doze or something, the messages wont arrive on my device.
This problem isn't only for whatsapp, it's on all my apps which have like a "background communication"
Tried fixes:
In smart manager is excluded them from the saving power option
Checked if there is like a mobile data restriction
Cleared dalvik cache
Used Push Notification Fixer - but as I mentioned, I dont think this problem is the real notification, there is just no message, which could notify me
Re-installed the app with out titanium backup -- so fresh clean Google Play Store installation
My Device:
Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge -- SM-G935F
Superman-Rom v 1.12 --> I tried with other customroms -- same problem
Prometheus Kernel 1.5.3
If anybody has any possible solution, please let me know
Thanks in advance
Cheers
Hi @MisterEvo,
i unfortunately cannot help you, but I wanted to say, you are not the only one with this problem - i recognized these "Push-notification-issues" too.
I tried nearly everything to fix it, like different Custom Roms, different Kernels, different Bootloaders, clear cache or reinstall app, disabled app in smartmanager, allowed background data usage and so on, but nothing, really nothing fixed my push-notification bug.
I would really appreciate if there are any suggestions from the community.
Regards.

S7 Edge Notification Delay and A Lot of Other Problems

Recently I am having notification delays with my S7 Edge G935F. I have read through some posts on this forum and other sources and can't figure it out.
Here are some of the problems:
1. notifications are often delayed for more than thirty minutes
2. if I want to manually check notification when it does not pop up, unlocking the screen does not make the notification show, I have to actually launch the specific app to see the notification
3. It is more than just not showing the notification, when I am using some instant messaging apps (like WeChat), I can't see new messages coming in while the app is running in the front. I have to press the home button and get back to home screen, then re-enter the app, then the messages show up. This happens to many other apps as well.
4. Other things go wrong as well. For example, my Android Auto was set to launch whenever I get into my car and car bluetooth is connected. It is also delayed, by more than hours. It often launches long after I finish my driving and get back home sitting on my couch.
5. Downloading new apps from Play Store has problems as well. It downloads to 100% and just stops there, it does not start installation. I have to use Settings->App to kill Play Store and re-open it to "refresh" it, then it starts to install.
6. After installation of new app, it does not show up on my screen or app draw inside my launcher. I can see the app installed in Play Store. I have to kill launcher and re-open the launcher to make it "refresh" the app list then I can see new app inside the app draw.
I have also tried a lot of ways to fix it:
1. change app to not battery optimized -> didn't fix it
2. update firmware -> didn't fix it
3. factory reset -> works for the first day then it goes wrong again
4. flash to a different firmware (official ROM in different regions) -> works for the first day then it goes wrong again
5. use third-party ROM (Lineage OS) -> completely fix the problem, but too buggy to use
I can see the general idea of what's going wrong, some events happened (connected to car Bluetooth, new messages coming, app finished downloading, new app installed, etc.) and the system is not responding correctly. I am not very familiar with Android development but I feel like something is wrong with the "event handling" or "event raising" inside Samsung's Android system.
Please post reply if you have any idea or are facing the similar problems.
EDIT:
The phone is on Android 7.0, Build Number NRD90M.G935FXXU1DQER
You've stated that flashing the custom ROM solved the problem, so maybe you should try flashing a different rom that's a bit more stable.
From personal experience i can recommend the SuperStock rom. It's stock (obviously) and it's debloated and very stable with pretty good battery life as far as i remember.
there is some info about it here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/help/want-to-root-custom-one-stay-stock-t3631098?styleid=18 (ignore the root part).
Hi,
did you find any solution to this problem ? cause i got the same problem, and i'm going crazy... few months already and can't figure out what is the problem...
the temporary fix i've found is disabling the "google app" in application manager... it fix the problem but i can't use any Google app features (and i like using them...).
I've found few ppl experiencing the same problem searching on internet but no one with a real fix...
if someone more experienced can help debut this it would really mean a lot...
I think it is the battery optimization setting. You may check the settings>battery>advanced settings>optimize apps. You need to keep the apps un-optimized if you want the notifications and sync.
Also, you may check if Sync is on or off.
If these two does not solve, factory reset if you are on stock ROM. If on a custom ROM, you may check a different ROM
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Actually none of this works... The only thing that "fixes" the issue is disabling the Google app in the application manager... That's why its so weird...
The problem started around July/August 2017 for me...
As i discovered that disabling Google was fixing the problem, i assumed that they'll correct it by updating the app... But only one update of the app was ok, all others would make the problems reappear...
Messing with battery optimization settings doesn't change anything for me... Factory reset as well... The problem comes back as soon as the google app gets updated...
Try clearing cache and deleting data from the Google app the time the problem occurs
already tried... doesn't help at all...

Google apps

Originally I was excited to go vanilla Android OS but as I continue to run into DUMB limitations of Google apps such as Google Calendar I begin to question my decision.
A few examples:
Google SMS app - cannot multi delete pieces of a conversation. There are other irritents as well.
Google Calendar app - cannot copy and paste an event.
Multiple Google apps - no option to not use the psudo analog clock to set time for alarms and events. For me this method is difficult to use AND I have been trying to get used to it.
I have replaced Google SMS app with Verizon but I am looking for a better replacement.
Google Calendar I am still looking for a replacement.
It seems Google apps are only partially implemented.
Suggestions?
I use Next SMS, but people also like Textra or Chomp.

Google apps are only partially implemented. This is typical Google. They finish everything 75% of the way. Textra is probably the best SMS/MMS solution. Lots of calendars in the Play Store as well. I'd look into what's offered.
I am beginning to wonder if that is how they do Android as well...

Pretty much.
Android OS is an "Open System". Unlike other OS, if we don't like any system apps then we can download and install any of other apps that we like.
Just frustrated and letting off a little steam. I have always used Verizon Samsung Sx products in the past and looked over the shoulder of iPhone users. Trying to get Essential to that level of functionality and perhaps gimmickry (text and enhanced voicemail apps) have me pulling my hair out as I fail every time.
If you want an iPhone, buy an iPhone. Of course the price of this phone on promo is probably the finance charge of one of the latest Apple devices.

I have never owned an iPhone and I never will. I just admire their software polish. I despise their total control concept. That is why I have an Essential phone...
"Google Calendar app - cannot copy and paste an event."
This would be good. It does have some good repeat options though, including custom. I have used this to good effect with my 3 on/3 off work schedule, which I couldn't find in other apps. I have requested the copy/paste through the app, you should too.
Another thing, log into your Google account on a computer, your calendar is a little different and has some other options, including duplicate events.

Disable Battery Optimization

So it looks like there are many people having issues with the battery optimization feature, which lets me guess oneplus is already aware of the problem. My question is if there is a way to disable the optimization completely for now until oneplus has sorted things out.
Since the last update it is so aggressive, it kills youtube's connection to my chromecast every few minutes, rendering all control features unuseable as I always have to reconnect before I can do anything. This also makes my wearOS watch unuseable as it also depends on the phone keeping the connections alive.
You can turn off Optimization for YouTube and WearOS
Settings > Apps & Notifications > Special app access
You can turn off optimization for any app, and see the advanced in the 3 dot menu. I had the same problem with my watch, turned off the watch app and helper, now works great. I also turned off messenger, no problems now.

I also would like to know if this is possible in an easy way. I don't want to disable it for 256 apps independently.

Thanks for the reply!
That setting was the first thing I checked and already disabled optimization for the wearOS and cast apps which work fine now. Unfortunately it won't let me disable it for the youtube app as it handles that one as a system app. As long as youtube is not allowed in the background wearOS has nothing to communicate with so I still can't control it.
That's why my next thought was if I can't disable it for system apps maybe there is a way to completely disable it until oneplus has the problem solved. I know that solution would suck but at the moment I am forced to use another phone to use youtube properly which sucks even more imo.

I wonder if the system mover app works on Pie and YouTube? I didn't realize YouTube was a system app since it's from the play store.

I would love to try this but I am unrooted. Youtube should be on the list but it is not, I am guessing that is because it comes preinstalled, the playstore app isn't there as well for example.
I know this is an old thread, but the more I use my new phone, the more I believe this to be the issue with my Gmail app constantly putting my Exchange accounts back to 30 minute fetch. And, I cannot disable battery optimization on Gmail because it's a system app (and I do not want to root). For now, every other day, I have to tell the device that it really is OK for Gmail to remain constantly connected to my Exchange account, that I actually prefer it to be. I've made it to 54 hours with my normal use (OVER 7 HRS S.O.T), not trying to stretch it at all, no battery saving features on whatsoever. So it's safe to say I can afford for Gmail to stay connected with Exchange. The optimization is a bit too aggressive for not allowing system apps to be excluded.
I've also had issues with Google Assistant not reminding me about reminders that are clearly in the list of her reminders, and I think this to be the culprit as well, and again, can't disable it because it's not on the list.

Having exactly same problems with gmail and chrome (html5 push notifications). I am rooted. So I am considering to mark those apps as non system apps, but still not sure if this won't brake future updates or something.
