Root or not? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

So guys i know the possibilities of android phones after rooting as my previous phone was Sony Z2...but i am not really sure about rooting s8 :?
If i root it i will miss all updates right? So isn't it better to leave it as it is cause it's just the best smartphone now anyway...

I ran out of reasons to root a long time ago. As Android started getting more polished and allowing more customization I didnt see the need for it. The only thing I'd use it for now is for boot screens and bloat removal.

Root Explorer
Adway
Tasker
Greenify
Titanium Backup
Lucky Patcher
Uninstall System Apps
and others....
These are just some of the reasons to root, if you're looking for full control of you system, then root! If you're not going to customize the system, then don't root.

Don't promote Lucky Patcher, it goes against the non piracy stand of this site.
To the topic, the only reason I rooted in the past was titanium backup, but nowadays most apps I use sync data. I think you can do a lot more today not rooting than in the past but that's just my opinion.

Agree with the lucky patch part. It can be "educational" but the piracy element is real and what makes it stand out. The real question is involving the new installation method for Magisk that was released on 9/9/2017 and if it's safe to use with a locked bootloader.

Xposed and YouTube adaway is about all I'd need it for. But it's too unstable right now plus the 80% battery thing is just stupid

I'm waiting for people fixing 80% battery issue, + lineageOS. The thing I always do after rooting is installing Adaway, but not these days.

there are adblockers that can be used via adb, system apps can be removed by adb, or can be disabled by package disablers, no real reason except to flash custom ROMs, which can be fun but gets tedious, I've rooted everyone of my previous phones (those that could be rooted), my S8 is the first that I have not and doubt I will.

I'm happy with stock, but since Samsung still don't have an option to skip music tracks with the screen off by long pressing the volume button, I'm forced to root...every...time :/
I just don't get it. With large modern devices, who wants to have to take their phone out to skip tracks. I use Poweramp, and I'm forced to remove my phone, double tap the lock screen, swipe to the player screen and then skip next track. I thought this was 2017...
The apps to do it are fickle at best. Plus, I shouldn't have to use crappy headphones with an inline remote.

waste of precious time,
battery drain, some app not working, can't find apps in goggle store.
security of device,
no samsung pay,
playing cat and mouse with Goggle

I'm not promoting Lucky Patcher, besides your actions with the app is entirely up to you. Lucky Patcher is like Kodi, they're not responsible for the actions end users take. So don't blame the software itself. Also, you can Backup or Restore of Apps and Data, Covert any app into System app and Move Apps to SD Card as well.

Rooting an S8 can cause many problems like :-
1.Warranty Loss
2.Problems with knox supported apps like (Samsung pay, pass, secure folder etc)
3.Loosing confidence on that security element that prompts us to save our valuable credit and debit card details etc.
I mainly root for ad blocking and theming. But nowadays non root alternatives are available for both.
Choice is yours.Good Luck

- Root Explorer
Why do users need to browse restricted system files? If it is to delete a file, etc, so they can disable a preinstalled app it can be done with the existing UI without root.
- Tasker
Root features are to provide extra flexibility over what Samsung offers on ringer vibrate, automatic reboot of the phone, making changes to the CPU settings, and automated change of the network to airplane mode. So for most users, there is a question of is there really a need to do more than what Samsung is offering in their own firmware when it comes to their must haves for use of the phone?
- Greenify
From what I gathered, they have a workaround for non-root devices to get the needed permissions using ADB. See their blog post "How to grant permissions required by some features on non-root device?"
- Titanium Backup
Android starting with version 4.0 has a built-in app and data backup and restore feature without the need for root or Titanium Backup. See http://projects.g.ydftech.com/home-1/androidbackup
- Lucky Patcher
Removing ads is the only feature that needs root and may be worth it. But, what are ads? A way to help a developer get paid while giving you free access to their work, do you really want to cut their only hope of revenue?
Modify app permissions, which is no longer needed as the latest versions of android give you the flexibility
Backup and restore apps, see the comment for Titanium Backup
Bypass premium applications license verification, that is basically committing illegal act of stealing something without paying for it, and although I don't endorse it in many cases there are apk's out there that have been "patched", so there is no need to root the phone in order to do this.
- Uninstall System Apps
You can just disable them. The device has many GB of space, are those system apps really taking too much space?

I'd recommend using BxActions its a very awesome app and there's no hassle onto using it.

DeX without the official adapter is the main reason I rooted, and it seems to be almost fully working with a patched kernel.
some cool mods may tempt you as well, I installed both the Stereo Sound Mod and custom video/jpeg bitrates.

I just like Rooting because its cool and thats what the cool people do, and so I can act superior (like someone gives a ****).. /s
Seriously though I don't care that much about Rooting because I don't feel its all the necessary. What I would like is an unlocked bootloader so we could make ROMs and flash stuff. I think the idea of Rooting is pretty old school we used to do it before you could do things like disable bloatware. Also since we can use apps like Adhell 2 its just one less reason to root. My biggest reason not to Root is I like Samsung Pay too much.

Does anyone know a safe way to root s8 ? (Without deleting information)
I mean, without opening the boot loader
Thank you for helping me .

Rooted every phone since the OG Droid. So far this is the only phone I haven't felt the need to root. But this is also the closest thing to the perfect phone I have owned.

I haven't really found a reason not to. I still need features that need root to run.

Google spikes 21 malicious apps with big download counts from the Market
Google just removed some 21 apps from the Market in the last day from a publisher going by Myournet for doing all sorts of naughty things to your device. Offenses include attempting to root your phone, uploading phone information (including IMEI) to who-knows-where, and -- most egregiously -- adding a backdoor that allows additional code to be pulled down and executed.

Any of the well known Antivirus app for android should have picked it up.
I used to think we'll never need an AntiVirus app for Android... well think again.
after reading the article i downloaded all of them to run a full scan and the results are good
I scanned my phone and it's all clean

you can simply un-install it, it doesn't really do anything to your phone until you run the app
and even if you did, uninstalling it will remove the problem
Flashing the phone is a bit over the top it's enough to do a system wipe if you want to be 100% sure, and then restore all your apps from backup, excluding the fake ones

This is actually an incomplete answer.
As noted on Android Police, (I'm new so I can't link there) these apps open a backdoor, which can download additional apps that can do *anything*. The original app doesn't do much on its own. But, removing the infected app will leave behind the additional malware introduced through the backdoor.
Is there anyone who knows if these apps actually worked? What I mean is if the games for example were actually games? The reason I ask is that there is a bubble shoot like game installed on a friends phone which works (not sure if it's the one mentioned above).
So would you be able to recognize that malicious app in that way?
Edit: just noticed on the Lookout Blog that they actively send out a patch to detect these apps (if I read it correctly):
http://blog.mylookout.com/2011/03/s...-found-in-official-android-market-droiddream/
So if you have not yet scanned for those apps, do it now ;-)
Thanks for the information!
How to remove and consequences
First i manyally uninstalled the "Advanced Barcode Scanner" of KingMall2010.
Second i scanned my device with Kasparsky and Lookout, both didn't find any threads.
In the end i performed a reset to factory settings and a format of my SD-card.
Can anyone please tell me if this actions are sufficient to completely whipe this malware of my device?
Also i would like to know if this malware actively sent my private data to servers, or that it just opened a backdoor for later use. And if my data is already sent, what are the consequences and which actions should i take to do something about it.

What you've done so far seems sufficient enough to clear the malware from your phone system. Even if it copied a backup on your SD card (internal & external) if you've wiped both then it should be ok.
In regards to already leaked data, I would immediately change my passwords to gmail, emails, facebook, ebay etc or any other site that you may have used on your phone.

Thanks for your quick reaction. It makes me a little more comfortable. Indeed i already changed my password's.
I already called my phone provider, but apparently could not tell me whether the IMSI (international mobile subscription identity) and SIM card serial number are sufficient information to clone my SIM card. This is the information that would be sent by the malware to remote servers.
Therefor after work i go to get a new SIM card. It's better to be safe than sory after all.
I'm still not convinced on running a constant anti-malware app on my phone. Even with a good processor, my cpu cycles are a precious resource to keep my phone running light and fast.
How heavy on system performance is lookout? Does it only activate and scan when new material is installed?

yes, it only runs after you install a new app from market

[Q] Clone 2 Transformer Devices

I bought my 1st TF101 a few months ago. I just bought a second one reciently for my kids (they were using a G-Tablet). Anyway, I dont want to administrate 2 devices. What ideas are out there to clone 2 devices and keep them in sync?? I have used TiBackup, but it requires that the device be rooted. Asus has done a good job of updating, so I dont want to root and loose auto updates (if I understand the effect of rooting the Asus TF101, I will loose the online update ability and for ever on be required to manually download firmware & sw updates). I have done this to other devices and installed new roms, but I now own 2 asus transformers so I whont have to do this. I have other tablets to play on.
Thanks in advance
If you put revolver on them that has over the air updates plus then you can have root with updates and keep them in perfect sinc with cwm backups and ti backups
Or just manually back them up often and set perental control on the other tf so the kids dont mess with the software to much?

Nandroid backups/restore?
On phones, I use Go Launcher for my wife. I have CM7 on her phone which comes with Superuser, busybox, and a bunch of crap she shouldn't be snooping in. So Go Launcher looks nice plug gives the ability to hide apps.
MIUI on my G2x has a security app which lets me pick specific apps to require a security pattern. I typically do this for my games so my little 5 year old doesn't get in there and erase or screw up my games. I also do this for Gallery so people can't snoop through my pics.
We don't have MIUI for our Transformers, but I'm sure there are other security apps as such. The option is in Settings under "Access Control", which requires a password to open, then you can add apps to the list.

That you! I'll look into revolver.
1) Is cwm backup simply an option when I boot into the good old cwm?
2) Is there a good thread you can point me to about revolver and TF101?
3) Can you tell me quickly the pros and cons of these 2 choices
a) Install Revolver and root
I really want to root, but am scared that I'll become unstable. ALso Would you say Revolver is as stable as Base Asus?
or b) Simply root the asus base?

Uh... Restoring nandroid backups of one tablet on the other would most likely result in some identification issues with Android market. It'll either see two TF as one device or fail to list one of them entirely on the market. The only thing I can think of is having TitaniumBackup and having it upload to Dropbox for backups. Even then it is still nearly impossible to have the two in sync.
when i got my transformer after signing in with the Google account linked to my cellphone, my transformer automatically started downloading all the apps that were currently installed on my phone. i barely had to do anything other than setup my email and arrange my icons around..
google does a good job on its own with the built in backup/restore features.
Google is pretty good with the re'installtion of apps you have bought but I have found not so good with free ones and or the data that goes with them.
If you want to try it with TI backup all you have to do is root with the below method and then unroot before upgrading to new version. Then re-root again, All your root apps will still be there ready to request SU permission again when you run them.
Actually very easy and quick if you use the boot CD method, I know thats how I keep root and keep updated. Nothing wrong as I see it with a custom rom but just not what I want to do at this time The choices are yours to make and just putting this option out there.
I agree with the poster that said it will be less than perfect and you might have to move the TI backups from one unit to the other. I haven't had much luck with the cloud option>version of TI back-up working at all. Maybe yours will be better.

[App/1.5+/Open-source/Root and Non-root] Permanent screen off for the Visual Impaired

Open source app development project: Permanent screen off for the Visual Impaired
Short summary
This is an app development project that turns off the Android screen permanently yet keeps the touchscreen and other features active and functional for the visual impaired.
Introduction & Goals of the project
There are many Android users who are blinded. And to them, they access the app mainly using TalkBack or other Screen Reader app. That also means that the screen is basically useless to them. They don't need to look at the screen yet they need to be able to use touchscreen.
This project is to create an app that will turn the screen completely off (100% off) yet let the user use the phone as normal.
Assuming that the blind takes more time than normal user to perform an action, it dramatically saves the device's battery.
The app must be easy to use and tailored to visual impaired user.
The app automatically runs with the device.
The app must be free and advertisement-free.
Background
I am the developer of the project and I recruit the interest of other developers / users as well. I am the developer of Screen Standby app, which this project is based on.
Device requirements
- Running Android 1.5 (Cupcake) or above
- (Optionally) Rooted for best battery-saving. The app works with non-root device though, only rooted device achieves complete dark
Instruction
1) Download the apk and Install the app
2) Run the app at least once
3) Select Enable app from menu
4) If the system asks for Superuser access, select always remember and allow
5) To disable, select "Disable app" from the menu and restart the device.

NOTE: Please read
1) Always use a screen reader (e.g TalkBack) with the app. In case you want to use your device without the screen
2) This app will permanently switch the device's screen off when it is active. To turns the screen back on, select "Disable app" or uninstall app completely and reboot
3) To uninstall from ADB, go to a shell and type: adb uninstall com.nkahoang.screenoffvisualimpair
Download
Currently the app can be downloaded from attachment section of this post. When it is stable enough, it will be ready to be released on Play Store for free download.
Source code can be downloaded in second post
If you know any Android user who is blinded, let them use the app and report. Any feedback is welcomed

Hello,
While putting it on the Play store is a good idea, there are a few blind folks on XDA like myself who would be happy to give this app some testing beforehand.
Thanks for posting to the eyes-free list, and thanks for developing this app!
correct this is also needs to be on the playstore as screen off or something easy that some of us can find more easily on the playstore . all of us blind people thank you for the app that hav found it but for those who cant can you please turn it into an APK installer or make it easy to install from playstore. as a lot of blind people don't know how to install zip files on android. if you can give me a quick tutorial I can explain to the eyes free list. I am a blind intermediate user of android. I do understand rooting, installing custom roms and gapps and installing apps for rooted devices but some of the rest on the eyes fre are a bit limited here so if you can give them an APK installable file it would be much easier to install rather then a zip package in which they have to figure out what to do with it.

Well done OP.
You are a hero for undertaking this venture. I wish you more success.
I still might have a use for this in my Android devices that I'm using as Network Cameras using the IP Webcam app.
But I will have to test it out to see if it acts the way I need it to (I'm not at home yet, but I will try it.)
On Android 2.x I'm able to have a camera app run fine in the background or with the screen off, but on Android 4.0 and newer, the camera doesn't work completely if you turn off the screen or switch to a different app.
I'm wondering, will this app allow me to have the screen completely off (on a rooted device) but still have the camera use all the processor it needs for perfect Network Camera functionality?
Thanks.

The camera will continue functioning normally. However, you may want to consider using my other app, Screen Standby # Root, also on XDA to achieve that. This app is tailored specifically to aid the blind in particular.
nkahoang i dont know if you got my email i sent a while back but i was looking for a app like this but be able to close my tablet and plug a keyboard and a mouse into my dock and hook it up to my tv and use my tv as a monitor screens cracked and touchscreen capability are all down the drain, would be great if you could add this feature to this app so i could finally find a use for my tablet again and as always keep up the good work.:good::fingers-crossed:
I have another use that I would like to ask for. Could you integrate Tasker support? I ride a motorcycle and have a bluetooth kit installed on my helmet. I leave my phone in my pocket or a glove box and therefore the screen is of no use to me. Yet if I ask Google Now to navigate somewhere, it opens navigation that keeps the screen on draining battery quickly. This really sucks as I don't have an outlet to plug into while riding. So, if I could setup a profile to activate this app while riding and disable it when I'm done, that could help me out a lot.
hello I was wondering I there has been further development on this app.
Lots of blind users are wondering about eh app development.
Since ther is no info a bit oncerning .
I know tha you develop the screen root stand by primarly but can you also devot e some development ot he app for he blind as well.
thanks for your development efforts
Hello, Now I am using Shades app by the eyes free team at Google. That is an app published to the google play. However after reading the description in the first post I think this app might be capable of saving more of the battery juice. I have just installed it on my SGS2 running CM-10 however if this is already know I would like to ensure this is really more powerfull than the Shades app I was tallking about.

Alternative to AdFree/AdAway for Xposed Users and those without WP-off)

Another informational thread for those of you using Xposed.
So I haven't seen any info about this in the Moto X section, and since many of us are using Xposed I wanted to bring this to your attention.
Unlike AdFree / AdAway (see edit near bottom) this method is superior (in my opinion) because not only does it block ads like the popular ad-block solutions, but it ALSO removes all the "white-space" taken up by those ads. It works on every app (that has ads) that I have tried so far.
The only MINOR drawback to using this Xposed module is that you must place a checkmark next to each app that you want to block/remove ads for, and a reboot is required for the changes to take effect.
It's really great! No more empty space where the ads are supposed to be!
Ok, so you have gotten this far....the Xposed module is called "MinMinGuard" (strange name for an ad-blocker, huh?). I'm not going to mention the DEV because they would like to remain anonymous, as they have had second thoughts about taking away other DEVs rights to place ads in their apps. Now there may be something to be said about that, but since XDA supports other AD-block apps, I don't see how this one is any different.
Nonetheless, the Module is still available in the Xposed repository. Simply download, and activate it, reboot, then open "MinMinGuard" and place a checkmark next to any app that you want to completely remove ADs on.
I think you'll just love it!
Also, this is an excellent option/alternative for those of you who are using TEMP-ROOT with Xposed and cannot use ADAWAY due to no write access to /system.
Enjoy guys. I've been using this for several weeks and it's just great being able to open all of my apps without those annoying ads, OR losing the screen space that they take up...
BELOW is a before and after of an app that contains ads. First shows the ad, second has the ad completely removed with MinMinGuard, AND screen space extended where the ad used to be....
EDIT 8/23/14: It has been brought to my attention that "AdAway" also removes 'white space' taken up by ads. I have tested and confirmed this to be true. As a result, I would only recommend this to those of you who do not have write-protect disabled (and hence can not use AdAway), but are still able to use Xposed (temp-root users). Since AdAway is also capable of blocking ads in Chrome, pop-up ads, etc., I would consider it the superior option IF you have write protect disabled.

IMO MinMinGuard is great, but it should be used in conjunction with a hosts blocker [like AdAway.] If you've only got temp root, you can use UnbelovedHosts [here and in the xposed repo] instead of AdAway, as it doesn't touch the actual hosts file.

I'm curious why you recommend that you use it in conjunction with a hosts blocker? Are you recommending it for redundancy? Like just in case MinMinGuard doesn't work for a particular app?
Because according to the dev: "I actually block the api call before the ad download and this way can block all the ads from supported ad networks."
With that in mind, so long as it works for all of your apps, a hosts-blocker is completely unnecessary as the ads never get downloaded form the host in the first place...
Redundancy I can understand, but can you clarify your reasoning? Personally, I never cared for host-based ad blocking. They can break legitimate sites, and the hosts files quickly become outdated if you don't update regularly.
Been using minminguard for a long time and I can say its worked out great! Now whenever i see ads in other peoples phones I get so annoyed because I'm used to an adfree experience, even in free apps.
Definitely recommended!
I'm not positive, but I don't think minminguard blocks popup ads in chrome. Maybe someone else can verify

It does not. It blocks APIs from downloading the ads. In the case of a web browser there is no api controlling said ads. Perhaps it's just the sites I visit (or rather, don't visit), but I don't have any issues with pop ups in chrome...
Gone give it a try and post review later

This is exactly why. MinMinGuard is great for apps, but hosts file blocking will work in any browser, webview, and block ads for ad networks MinMinGuard doesn't support [though that last one is likely a non-issue]
Thanks for informing about this, have not really heard about it before. However as a AdAway user for pretty long now I can say that it also removes the white space occupied by an ad.
There is also another ad blocker, which is referred as the mother of ad blocking , http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098
But don't really wanna try it, as it might disable the localized sponsored ads in a browser which I would like to see enabled.

Yea adaway does. Though I've had problems getting it to work on a write-protected motox, so I've been using minminguard.
Xposed is great for this, I just hate adding in modules as the more I've got, the faster my battery drains. On top of Tasker and power controls running...
tapa'd on my moto x
1. Is AdFree still "available"? The last I checked their website/tried to perform an update, all signs pointed to "defunct".
2. Sam, are you from the Cincinnati area?

1. Haven't used AdFree, but AdAway is available at f-droid
2. Nope, but not too far....

custom ROM that is ultra ultra minimal... is it possible?

I am a noob to rooting, and flashing custom roms. However, I'm very computer literate.
I bought the Xperia X compact because it appeared flashing roms would be very possible.
I have a simply idea, I want to make a rom that is so ultra minimal many of you might think I'm crazy.
All I want it a phone with a black screen, one icon of each: phone, contacts, txt, calculator.
that is it. I don't want internet, I don't want GPS.. nothing. I don't want any trace of any company on my phone.
Think of it this way, I want a blank slate, like a new fresh computer, and I want to install the OS of my choice, with only the things I want. I can't seem to find anything like this(it may exist, but my searching of the web returns nothing close) Can someone please help me with this?
Thanks in advance.

install any OS you want, root, and delete system folders of whatever you don't want. Then, you can end up with a black screen and 4 apps and nothing else. However, there will never be 'no trace of any company' unless you build your own components and design your own os. Even the 4 apps you want are developed and installed by the os maker, and they run how they want tjem to, (including collecting data, etc). Also, removing apps is removing a small part of the system that runs the phone. There is the kernel, system processes, and more that are required to use the phone at all, (or even turn it on), and all of these things are designed to operate a certain way, and contain many traces of various companies. You can't remove those things.
But, if what you want is the appearance of such a thing, you can easily attain that.

Thanks for the reply,
I guess, what I'm asking, (maybe your answered this) is it possible to install the OS, and not install drivers to run things like WIFI, GPS. I simply have no use for them. I currently turn them off on my X compact. I can get two solid days without charging my phone with just these two things turned off. Second, I use nothing on the phone, but placing calls, occasional TXT, and simple calculations. IMO there's absolutely no reason to have anything else on a phone. so in your reply you say install the OS I want, root it, and delete anything I want. So, since I don't know much about this and I'm still learning, what are the most one can delete from the system and still have a functioning phone? Does Sony publish a list what's on the Mother board, and what drivers run them? If there is it would be a great starting point for me to get an idea of what can absolutely not be deleted.
Thanks again!

May be a list compiled somewhere, but I can't say I know enough about it to give you direction. I think it would definitely be a chore to figure out, since modern roms can have over 100 system apps installed, (between /system/app and /system/priv-app), plus all of the other stuff. As far as Sony publishing info, they have an 'open' program for developers, but it's not entirely open source. You can find all of the sources they do make available on Sony developer site.
Personally, I usually just use the built-in app disabler and disable anything I don't want, and it hides the icon. Some things you can't officially disable, but you can use a third-party app, or delete app folders, but you want to be careful and make a backup. Maybe just move folders to a temp folder somewhere, in recovery file manager, and see if it reboots. Then, if not, you can go back to recovery and put it back...

I know that Sony has their open environment for developers. I like that they do this, its a good thing. I think there is a forum on their, I might be able to get some answers. I thought that on XDA, someone would actually know what you can and can't delete since it appears to me, making a custom rom would require deleting and removing things or adding things. Someone probably knows... From my perspective, I have found that most things that reference custom ROMs (here on XDA, or YouTube) seem to revolve around, either tricking out a phone, or "I did it! because I can"... "this does not work, I'm going to figure this out" and all of that is very cool. but I have not seen much in regards to hacks that make phones more useful, like a tool instead of the toys they are.
when I find out anything from Sony or on my own about doing what I propose, I will post back here. If anyone has any ideas or resources just let me know.
Thanks!
I think you could probably do better with some classic phone (not smartphone) with requirements like this.
A Sonim XP5 would come closest to fitting your requirements right out of the box. You start hacking on a smartphone too much and you'll end up with a paper weight.
The sonim xp5 looks promising.
I ordered a used from ebay I'm going to give it a try.
I still think phones should be sold with an option to Install anything you want just like computers. In fact the Industry would be even better if they followed what computers did. Allow people to purchase their own Mother boards, enclosures, batteries, and components, and let users build their own phones. just think it would a much better market.
Thanks for the help
got the XP5 but its not what I want either
The XP5 is ok.... If I want to survive a nuclear holocaust! That thing is thick as brick. Its a neat idea, but a little to limited.
OK, so I'm thinking has anyone installed a straight Linux OS on the Compact.
any thoughts?

yes. Linux deploy works great. I had Ubuntu and Kali running smoothly. Look up a tutorial, but know that there are a few ways to do it. I used boot-from-sdcard method . Basically partition sdcard, using 8gb or so of ext4 for Linux, then open Linux deploy app, and set preferences for environment, then install os, (takes a while and you need a strong internet connection), then use vnc app to connect to the Linux desktop. Almost everything works well, but sound is tricky. I got it partially working with media server app. Also, the file system is set up slightly different than on a Linux computer, so i had a little trouble with apktool... Another nice thing about it is that you can easily mount your android storage to the Linux desktop in terminal, and the Linux os runs basically as an app, so you can just go back and forth on the fly, and transfer files easily.
