Battery drain and back gets warm during google map navigation and others - Huawei Mate 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi,
Anyone experiencing the same battery drain issue during google map navigation?
In general, I have huawei mate 8 and mate 8 is much better in power consumption vs. mate 9 with same apps installed and usage patterns. Mate 8 battery can still be at 50% by midnight since early morning and mate 9 usually is already at 15% by midnight.
Pretty disappointed but i am trying hard to optimize mate 9 and one thing i notice is this google map issue.

Mate 9 has one of the best battery's out there. Screen time is incredible and from my experience with modrate useage I get 7 hours screen on time during 2 day use. I believe some rouge app is causing your phone to drain.

It's a gps problem Happens with many different types of driving software. Mine heats too

Using Waze. No heat, no abnormal drain.

Let's hope Kirin 950 is efficient because with the right setup, Mate 7 does well and I see no reason why Mate 8 should be much different.
See how Mate 8 owners compare, once the phone is in your hands and rooted etc.
I run LeanDroid and Kinscreen, phone is rooted and Google de-bloated.
Here's where my Mate 7 was at this morning.
the biggest worry is as always the modem...they drain a lot battery.
not many people think about it since it is "hidden" statistics

People with extreme long battery stats are usually those who use wifi only..
normal usage include 4G. I use no wifi only 4G.
The best apps for battery life?
Running on lenovo,Huawei mate 8,Note5, S6
Epic battery for me yesterday, first full charge, performance mode on all day, 19 hours up time with 6hrs39mins screen-on and 11% remaining when I turned in for bed. Looks like 7 hours screen-on over a full day should be doable, in a straight line I would think 8hrs+.
Similar again yesterday, 18hrs on battery, 5hrs 20mins screen-on, 23% battery remaining.

Your battery life does not say us anything unless you are using wifi or 3g/4g ?
you would see that in the mate 7 thread people using only wifi would get very superior screen on time while we normal people using 4G
would get more realistic battery life around 4-5 hours.
I hope you do not use wifi since that consume a lot less power as you might understand, and the modem
is a "hidden" battery drainer which is not shown in battery statistics ( I wish it did )
Mostly on WiFi, but if I contrast with other devices we can still make a meaningful comment.
My Note 4, in the same use, would not reach 4 hours of screen-on time. Neither would the 6P that I had. The P8Max would hit around 5 hrs.
So far the battery life here is best I have experienced on Android.

IF you have been using mostly wifi I would be little bit worried about the battery life when using 4G for data.
Also the software is still in early phase ..so big improvements can be made still in most areas.. battery life and camera etc.
battery life also depends on your usage pattern concerning apps. independent from wifi vs 3g/4g ull get far less SOT if u use cpu/gpu intensive apps all the time. so a direct comparison with other devices from the same user with identical usage patterns makes sense

Mind posting more screen shot of battery life of your usage? I am very interested. Battery chart + sot. Thanks.
I'm sure with time and people getting their hands on the phone, battery life will only improve. I avg 1d 4-5 hours with 6-8hr sot on my note 3 with 4g but the phone has been out for a long time
The Note 3 had pretty good battery life, from memory when I moved to Note 4 there was a reasonable regression there.
After a couple of charges and latest firmware update my battery life has been stunning. Yesterday/day before yesterday I went 36hrs on a single charge and had 6.5hrs screen-on. That's totally unprecedented on Android for me. Today I am down to 60% and have had 4.5hrs screen-on. For me at least is a new high bar for Android battery life.

Yesterday's battery report - 18hrs on battery, 7hrs20mins SOT, 17% remaining (another hour and a half or so or SOT for general use I would think). Indoors, WiFi, low screen brightness etc, but nevertheless destroying every other Android I've ever owned. Spent 50mins playing some emulator games towards the end - Wipeout Pure (PPSSPP) and Fire Emblem Path of Radiance (Gamecube game in dev build of Dolphin). They got the phone warm and were, as you would expect, much heavier drains than browsing and so forth (probably more so than higher end native Android games as they stretch the CPU as well). For those interested Path of Radiance played seemingly perfect for the first level proper of gameplay, overclock set to 0.2.
wait, ure able to overclock the cpu already? nice

No, sorry if that was unclear, that's a change in Dolphin itself. I'm a bit in shock at how well Fire Emblem is running on a phone.

Mate 8 Battery Life Thread

How's everyone doing as far as battery life? I didn't charge my phone last night after using it moderately during the day and night. I used it moderately-heavy today. I got 7 hours 57 minutes of screen on time. When I use the phone during the day I leave it on 100% screen brightness. When I lay down in bed I put the brightness at around 25%. I always leave the phone on Performance. I'm sure I can do better, but let's have a contest here to see who can squeeze the most battery life out of this device. This battery lasts a long time in the Mate 8, i'm loving it.
2 days on mobileb data and wifi
SOT : 7 hr. 54 min 40 s.

It is difference between wifi and mobile data.On wifi we can on many SOT than mobile data.
I know, that is why I asked only wifi or flight mode. I think in normal usage like 60:40 or 70:30 mobile data wifi, I can't believe, we can reach this sot with mixed usage and gaming.

I wanted to have at least a weeks worth of testing, with cell data activated, in order to give my perspective.
Hands down, this is the best performing and battery saving device I have ever used. It's really no contest. According to GSAM Battery Monitor Pro, my averages are 1.5 days screen on time and 2 days total battery life per full charge! Only thing that I've been doing, at night, that I'm planning on testing otherwise, is turning on Ultra Power Saver mode, before going to sleep.
I am running on Performance battery mode during the day, while accomplishing the above stats. I'll see how it does tonight, when I don't turn on ultra power saving, but I'd imagine I could still make it 24 hours easily, without needing a full recharge.
i leave it on smart mode but turn on airplane mode, that way im only using anywhere between 0-3% overnight so with ultra mode it should be in the range of 0-1%

It seems that enabling double tap to wake drains significantly more battery. My Android System usage after enabling it was at 25% today and I only have 4 hours of screen on time and my battery is down to 22%. I was also getting random black screens when trying to unlock until I disabled it. This is why Huawei didn't enable it on the Mate 8. The same issue happened with my Mediapad X2 and it took about 5 updates to get it working properly. I'm sure in the future it will be enabled and working well.
On my ex Huawei Honor 6 Plus 5.5" w/ Lollipop the DTW doesn't use any significant battery power, and that phone has a Kirin 925 processor, so there is no apparent reasons why on Mate 8 it should use more power.
I too hope that the currently observed battery drain was caused by a not yet complete and correct implementation of this functionality...

I might try Smart mode tonight. Ultra battery mode, while the device barely drains between 0-1% for me, it does seem to undo some of the defaults I have set, like taking Messenger off as my default text messaging app.
Please help me!
My battery is drain and I don't know how to fix it.
The problem is caused by Android System and SO Android.
Yesterday I had wipe data, wipe partition, clean all Android Services cache but thw proble continues.

In reading the first part of your statement, I thought there was a double tap to wake funciton that I didn't see anywhere and might have overlooked. But after reading thoroughly through, I actually love the fingerprint sensor on the Mate 8, which wakes the phone. What I did/do, and it's similar to what I've done in my devices for the past 4 years, is use Widgetlocker in addition to the fingerprint sensor. That way, when I wake the phone with my fingerprint, there's still a lockscreen that prevents unnecessary touches, prior for me needing to do whatever I have to do on my phone. Only quirk of using Widgetlocker on the Mate 8 is that I can seem to figure out how to fix the settings, so it will allow me to edit my lockscreen. My workaround has been to create/edit the lockscreen on one of my phones, and then use Pushbullet to send over the backup.
Anyhow, just wanted to share my 2 cents, although it would be really nice to have the double tap to wake. I do have double tap for "screen lock", courtesy of Nova Launcher. I linked the double-tap function (gesture in Nova Launcher settings) to the "screen off" app. I'm not sure if that is a stock Huawei app or if it's a stock Marshmallow function, but it was pre-loaded on my Mate 8 and it works perfectly! Only down side is that it only works on the homescreens (which, I think is the same way it works on LG phones), but it is awesome to not have to hit the power button to put the phone in standby.
Battry
My phone's battery consumption on Android system. Consumption is always at the top. Night from 12 pm to 6 am about 6 percent of consumption. Mate 7 nights before I was 1%. I feel like Mate 7 is not strong consumption and high phone battery, update firmware, I still was not 185 b103. Excuse my English is not good.
ایرانی های عزیز اگه هستند کمک کنن
At my phone the bigger consumption is from android system on which the app with the most milliamps is the settings... LOL wtf? Second consumption is on hardware phone calls and then SOT... How is that even possible?

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Nokia 8 before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
6 hours SOT from under 100% to 20% on first full charge WOW!
Thankfully battery on Oreo seems on par
Can't complain about that. Twice what my HTC 10 would usually manage. :good:
It just keeps getting better and better. Release Oreo already
thanks all for posting the results .. i might get one
Basing off accubattery app in playstore, sot is at 6hr 55m. For a 3090 mha batt, its remarkable already.

Got 7:22 at 20%, this was all on wifi at home but with LTE on. Lots of installing/configuring apps, a bit of GPS/ingress, lots of twitter/web browsing/etc.
I'm getting about 4- 4 1/2 hours on LTE.
WIFI on, but not connected,
Bluetooth connected to hands free.
About 30-45 minutes of calls.
Skype, whatsapp, hangouts running in background.
Playing some games.
Loads of driving, so signal changes all the time.
Edit:it looks like SoT is getting better after few more day.
Now I'm getting over 6 hours in exactly the same conditions.
These are my best numbers. I noticed that phone calls and camera are the most draining apps. Usually I don't play games, sometimes async multiplayer games like Scrabble or similar.
Wifi ON if a network is avaliable
Bluetooth always ON (FitBit)
LTE enabled
Brightness automatically over 25%
Airplane mode and battery saver when I'm sleeping

Mate 9 pro Oreo - poor battery performance

Hi,
After upgrading to Oreo (LON-L29 8.0.0.366(C432)) I'm experiencing very heavy battery drain. I would estimate it's somewhere between 30 - 50% worse than the battery performance with Nougat.
According to the android 8 battery usage information, the 'Phone' application (ver 5.0.0.1) is one of the main culprits - it drained from 100% down to 64% in an overnight test environment with no human interaction and all (possible) apps set to not run in the background.
Amazed they released this with a glaring performance drop.
Anyone else experience this poor battery performance?
Has anyone downgraded to Nougat due to this?
cheers

Exactly the same issue on Huawei P10 Plus. App "Phone 5.0.0.1" is causing havoc with battery.
Well after a lot of headscratching it seems the issue was that the 'phone' application is buggy when the sim card is installed in slot 2, and slot one is empty.
I had my sim card in slot 2 - moved it to slot 1 and rebooted - battery life is better than ever and the 'phone' application is back to using minimal power.

Redmi note 7 HIGH battery drain

Hello,
my uncle just bought me a brand new genuine Redmi note 7, I opened the box and turned the phone on.. I noticed that the battery was at 66%, I set up the phone which took a minute or less and that's when I was about to connect it to my wifi BUT then I notice that the battery is 63% ALREADY.. Now knowing that the phone has a 4000mah battery I was beyond shocked too see a 3% drain with low brightness and just 1 minute of light use literally no SIM or internet was being used.. so I turned it off and charged it to the max.. After that I turned the phone back on to update miui.. I connected the phone to my wifi and started updating to the last version.. available from the updater.. it took less than 10 minutes.. and guess what I see? 100% to 89% in less than 10 minutes that's crazy.. I bought this phone because of this guy w ww. youtube. com/watch?v=3gaWbx2x06s as we can see in the video he gets almost 8 hours of SOT with full brightness wifi and youtube FHD... right now I'm doing the same experiment and adding battery saver setting and my battery is draining fast I'd be surprised if I got 4 hours of sot... I don't understand... what's wrong? The phone is new and genuine since I verified the imei.. Thank you.

I believe every phone does the same thing like that when you configure them for the very first time. Full brightness, wifi scanning, mobile data ON, GPS ON, sync ON for a few minutes can consume lots of battery.
My advice is to fully set up your phone with all the apps you want and turn off any features you don't use. Use and recharge your phone normally for a few days. Check for battery consumption stats using native graphs or popular battery tracking apps. Analyze graphs and stats and draw the conclusions yourself. (Don't trust everything people say on YouTube, trust your own experience.)
In the worst scenario, you can always return your phone within 7 days of purchase. I hope you don't have to! :fingers-crossed:
My brand new redmi note 7 is a little fast draining right now too which is a little disappointing but my redmi note 5 was also the same fast draining when I first purchased it and it improved so I really hope this redmi note 7 does the same and improves.
I have both phones side by side right now so I can kind of compare usage

Yeah even my mediatek redmi note 4 didn't drain like this.. now when it gets to 15% it just discharges completely.
One thing I will mention is facial recognition. It could possibly drain the battery faster so I have just turned it off for testing purposes. I need to see what difference it makes but that's really the only difference between my two redmi phones 5 & 7.
Any new phone battery will take a few charge/drain cycles until it is calibrated correctly.
Use it for a while and see if the battery settles down.
Also different countries have different mobile systems. This will also affect battery life as the phone needs to continually scan for a signal....

I know the post is old but I have the same problem ... I think we are so many to have it !!
I have a Note 7 for more than a month and it never went well ... I managed to do only 3 days but almost without using it, there are people who also do 4 or 5 days of use ...
Anyway if I use it it makes me amalapena 1 day ...
When I use the phone I see that it consumes my battery quickly even if I just navigate the phone menu.
I've already done at least 4 reset but it didn't help
I do not know what to do..
Did you solve the problem?
miui 11 could help?
Thanks
Imposible to do 4-5 days with this phone or any phone when u use it. Why do u have smartphone when u dont use it and u care about battery?
What version MIUI are you all using?
I'm still on 10.3.5 and battery life is great.
I average 9.5 hours SOT ( 2 days worth) with normal use and have got as high as just under 11 hours SOT a few times.
If you're not on 10.3.5, can you roll back?
I've heard of battery life issues after updating to the newer versions which is why I'm staying on this one until they work out the kinks
My battery life has improved since my earlier post just as I expected it to The note 5 does last a little longer when I put them side by side but they are both great phones and the batteries last for ages with normal daily use!
I barely use 50% with gaming (currently clash royale) social medias, spotify for around 2 hours and some other stuff plus I'm working 5 days a week so I don't get to see my phone for most of the day anyway

might be a dumb question but, how/when do you charge your phone ? do you wait for the battery to reach 0-10% and charge it back to 100%? or you do the 20% to 80% charge "cycle" ?
I try to charge my phones every night now when I go to bed, The note 5 & 7 are around 50% most days from useage and I charge them from around 8/9pm until I wake for work at 5am (Living the dream)

I am not sure, Because it almost never drops below 50% in a days usage I have stopped looking and worrying about battery life It just lasts and lasts for me.
