Battery Temps Too High? - Droid Turbo 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This thought never occurred to me about the temp of my phone until I started running it without the case and could actually feel how hot it's getting.
Seems like whenever I'm using the phone to browse Google or Facebook (not official Facebook app) my phone will regularly reach 92 or 93 degrees. If I am updating apps from the play store or using Google Maps navigation it will hit 104 easily. Highest I've ever seen it was 109.
I don't use the turbo charger, I use a wireless charging pad (non fast charge). I've never looked at the temps while it's charging, but I know it does get pretty damn hot while it's charging.
Is this normal? Without the case on it's almost uncomfortable to hold the phone. Never realized my Turbo 2 could double as a hand warmer/fire starter for the winter months!

I don't know if it's normal but I have noticed that happens with my dt2 when I'm watching YouTube while charging and such, but I am using the turbo charger so I don't know if that has anything to do with it

Battery heats up...

I just had a couple of longish calls in a short period. Both averaged about 30 minutes or so.
The phone is HOT. It is hot on the screen and battery side. This is not the first time the phone as started to get warm after long use.
This has never happened on my Raphael. I had it happen the other day while I was using the GPS a lot too. This seems like a very bad thing to me as heat will destroy the battery and possibly chips.
Hmmm....supposedly from the HTC site:
Why does the phone heat up when I’m charging the battery or when I’m making long duration calls? more
It is normal for the device to heat up during charging. After charging, it will return to its normal temperature. It is normal for the device to heat up when you are using the same function for a long time, such as making long duration calls or recording a long video clip. Please rest assured that all HTC devices are factory tested before released. Was this helpful? Yes | No
(I say supposedly because only way to get it was using Google Cache...the page didn't pull up from the link.)
But this isn't 'warm' like I would expect from a battery...this feels hot, like when I tell someone not to put laptop on their lap because blocks vents...and then have them put hand on their laptop. That kind of hot.
Install System info widget and check the temperature of your battery, should be at 98F - 106F
I've had mine get too hot a few times. I'm assuming that's what this means, but when the phone is hot, I see the led indicator light alternate flash between green and Orange. I've taken out the battery and let it cool down and then everything was normal again. I'm beginning to agree with other people that I don't like this phone. I never had this problem, or any problem, with my Samsung moment. If this crap continues with this phone, I am giving the Samsung epic some serious thought. People have ranted and raved HTC phones. The Evo being my first one, I'm not very impressed with it once I played with it for awhile. Yeah, the specs looked impressive on paper but in real life, I don't care too much for it. I guess I will wait and see what happens.

Any idea why the phone would get warm when screen is off and you have no background apps running? I get this at work amd im sure its not caused by signal searching Im outside all night
My phone shut down from heat today.
I got into my car, turned on gps and bluetooth, put the phone into the mount, and started navigation. Sure enough, the thing shut down in about a min. The car and the mount were kinda hot too.
I had to take off the silicone case and point 1 air vent at the phone, to get the temperature to a pretty cool 31C (with charging at the same time).
On its own, I haven't seen the battery heat up, especially when the screen is off.
Perhaps that batter is defective, or you have a rogue process that's running the battery down.
How fast does your battery drain when it heats up, and normally?
The normal speed for draining the battery with the screen off is about 1% per 1 hour.
Covers, cases, holsters, in your pocket, being in a hot car (even not in direct sunlight), etc. Pretty much anything that can keep the heat from escaping the phone or add to the phone's temperature.
I hope cyanogen can be a miracle maker with the custom rom he's making, because this phone's quirks are getting on my nerves. Yeah, it's past the 30 day return deadline.

Which other phone can run 1Ghz processors and not overheat under full load and inside a case?
I think common sense tells me I should have expected that.
I get pretty good battery life from my evo. 20 hours of moderate/high usage took me to 30-40% but I work in a pretty well air-conditioned ambulance and drive around with my phone in my lap most of the time or in my pocket on occasion and when I pick it up sometimes the screen and back cover are warm. I look at battery temp and its like 32-36 degree celsius idling like that
Edit: phones naked btw no screen protector or case for now
After a couple hectic days of ebook reading and killing my battery my phone was getting hot like really randomly and when I had the screen on for like 10 mins or more, or when I charged it or pretty much if I even looked at it wrong! On a side note I have it in the body glove case from Sprint. Also my battery life was horrible. I was going down to like 30% in like 7 hour of practically no use.
Now I was running completely stock and unrooted( I hadn't felt the need to root yet) My solution was I rooted, installed DC rom then and I believe this is what fixed it cleared my battery stats from the recovery menu. Bam my phone hasn't even gotten warm since. Also it's been a week since I did this, and I'm getting crazy battery life now( like I'm down to 70-80% in 7 hours now with light use)

Does your vibranT get insanely hot?

Hi I'm new to xda, and from the looks of things everybody seems very helpful
I was just wondering if anyone else has been having this issue
Upon regular use and normal brightness I notice the temp of my phone to be around 98 degrees but when using highest brightness levels its around 120 degrees!
Another thing is that when my battery is charged at 100%, once I remove the charger it immediately drops down to 97%
Has this been happening to any of you guys? Have to you found a solution for this?
Also I've been using battery life version 1.3 from the app store if that helps
Thanks in advance guys

Mine only gets really hot (temp > 100° F) if I am charging it and playing a game or watching a video at the same time.
Otherwise it stays at a reasonable level all day. Currently charging via USB; temp is 91.4° F.
Also, haven't seen mine immediately drop to 97% after unplugging. It usually takes a little while before my battery widget shows any drop in charge.

My Vibrant can get pretty warm but it's no worse than the CLIQ I used to cook my dinners on.
Haven't noticed
Mine gets really warm when I play Sims for an extended time.
Mine gets hot when the GPS is running. The heat doesn't come from the battery area, though, but from the top part of the phone - around the camera.
What happens is my screen gets blazing hot almost like a light bulb, the back however does not get as hot as the screen, I'm wondering if this just is a hardware issue and if I should swap it out or not

bingo - I have noticed the same with GPS on.
compared to my g1, this phone is "Warm" at best. Damn thing used to burn my lap with gps+wifi.
I have noticed the same thing. Mine gets really hot when it syncs non stop. I had to perform a factory reset and for now my phone is fine.

Warm phone and low battery observation

I was going to post this in response to a fast draining battery post, but think this is a little more important to others that might find it interesting. I noticed on Tuesday I was at home on the couch and I had a few apps running like normal and my battery was around 80 or so %, but nothing I would ever consider CPU or even GPU intensive. I think email and maybe web browser. I decided to check the weather using the "Weather and News App" I don't have wifi on and I have location via wireless turned off so I manually entered in my location. I put the phone down and I swear 30 minutes later my phone felt really warm and I went from 80 down to around 50 fast.
Yesterday I was out with the wife shopping and I had around 90%. I fired up shopsavvy because she was interested in some coffee maker and of course I had GPS off and wireless location off because all I wanted was a web price. I did my scan and put my phone in my pocket. An hour later I noticed my phone felt a bit warm and it went from 90 down to 36.
I don't know if its a combination of other things I had running, wireless and GPS off and the vibrant was working hard to try and connect or what. It was just an observation I had and basically I just shut down and turned my vibrant back on. Battery was still low and the warm area high up on the phone cooled down. I thought it was the battery at first, but since the battery is on the lower half of the phone it had to be something else.
I have had similar suspicions in the last 10 days or so but haven't narrowed it down. If you figure something out please post.

Same heat related battery drain
Same exact issue here. Phone was at 100% at noon, I was out in the hot sun with the phone in my pocket from that point on and the phone was dead by 5pm. Any help is appreciated as I too thought it was the battery.
My phone warms up a little when I use either the GPU (gaming) or Cellular radios (continious surfing or tethering). The battery goes down because the connections or GPU is sucking juice.
Same things with my phone, battery simply drains even when phone is off in m pocket. It always feels warm and obviously something is sucking the juice out of it.
Yea, battery is the one and only thing I hate with a passion with my phone atm. Can only hope that it's just an issue that can and will be fixed via software on 2.2 :/
I noticed that my sd card is the warmest part of the back of the phone when it's in use. Have a class 4 pny 8gb from walmart
I had to uninstall shopsavvy bacause the phone was getting really warm and was draining battery very quickly.
I don't think it's shopsavvy, but maybe a faulty gps driver or the whole location awareness system.

Issue with my battery

So i am sorry if this should be in a different section but I thought it should be in general.
I have had the epic for about 3 months now and i have noticed my battery drains extremeley quickly. However i put it down to a bright screen and lots of game playing and internet surfing. However over the last week i noticed it drains even more. Today i timed myself. It went from 97 percent where it started at full charge(i don't know why but it always does that) down to 87 percent in 18 MINUTES!!! I was only surfing on the market downloading a game here and there. What are your thought on this? Do i have a bad battery?
p.s. I recently installed viper rom 4.0.2 c. would this have anything to do with it?
bump
sorry for the bump
First, about the 97% thing, it is part of the protection built into the battery to keep it from overcharging. It will charge to 100%, then settle back to about 97%. Then, it doesn't charge back up to 100% after that.
Second, it sounds like you have something eating processor cycles. How fast does it drain when you aren't surfing the market and downloading? Have you checked to see what is using the battery or the processor? Are you using a live wallpaper? Were you on wifi? Were you downloading stuff with a crappy 3g connection? Or was your signal good?
I don't think it is the battery. You need to find out what is using the juice.
edit: and there's no need to bump your post only two hours after you posted it. It is early in the morning and people will be around soon enough.
It still drains very fast when not surfing. For instance i used the phone a little more after that test then didn't look at it till now it drained 15 percent standbye in 4 hours. thats alot. I have no wall live paper-using viper rom apocolypse paper. I check and it always says dislpay is the problem yet it is as low as it can possibly go. I leave wifi 4g and gps off at all times prety much. I have a 5 bar connection because i have a sprint tower litterally behind my house. My house is in front of a golf course and the tower is on the golf course i can see it when i look out my window so i doubt its the connection.

Did you use Spare Parts to check if it's sleeping properly?
how do you do tht i have never used spare parts? is that the battery usage thing?

Spare parts is a free app that gives you access to some hidden settings in the android os. Download and install it from the market.
Before you run it for the first time, connect your Epic to the charger for a couple seconds, then unplug it and immediately and hit the power button to put the screen to sleep. This will reset your battery history stats. Let your phone sit for a few minutes with the screen off. If you get any calls or text messages during that time you will have to start the process over again. After 4 or 5 minuets, wake the phone and run Spare Parts. Hit "Battery history" and look at your "Running" percentage. Then touch where it says "Other usage" and select "Partial wake usage". This will give you a list of apps and components that are keeping the phone awake while the screen is off. Touch whatever app is at the top of the list (most often this is "Android System") and check the amount of time it is keeping the phone awake.
Let us know what you come up with.
1 min 57 seconds TIKL touch to talk
Android system 9 seconds

Looks like TIKL is the culprit. I stopped using that a couple months ago.
Do you remember what your "Running" percentage was before you checked "Partial wake usage"?
i believe it was around 9 percent
Sounds like every Epic that came out. Mine also. Some people have tricks and apps that help battery. But it's not your battery it's working well. Does it keep a charge? it's working.
What helped me... I was soo tired of it draining. Just brought two extra batteries from ebay.. $9.99 (not sure the going rate anymore there are tons of people selling these just pick one) now I have 3 batteries, a wall charger.. and now I'm good to go on vacations and road trips.
This might not be an option for you. but it's out there sides.. $9 is a deal.
I don't think i wana do that. I am not guna pay 10 bucks for 2 samesung batteries that aren't going to work. I would rather pay 30 for stock batteries, even if they cost more they will last longer and not blow up in my pants pockets. If i buy from a chinese company how will i know that it even works?
I agree I'm sick of these chip batteries that doesn't worth any next I'm buying at least OEM.

Motorola Atrix and Canadian Winters

Im a wireless technician and when I need to climb a tower I tend to leave my phones in the truck (work phone is a S2). After a couple of hours of the phones being in sub zero temperatures, the Atrix loses about 60 to 80 percent of battery. Well, thats what the OS is telling me. It will continue to work throughout the day at 1 percent. If I charge it from that point forward it wont charge past 70 to 90 percent. Depending on how long I used it at 1 percent. Only way to fix it is remove the batter after it has been in the charger all night and put it back on once the question mark is there. And I need to do this almost every night. If I leave the phone for 30 minutes it might drop 10 to 20 percent. But just enough to mess up.
This doesnt happen with the S2. It does drain faster but it is not noticeable. Anyone else notice this? Oh and my Atrix messes up big time in the humidity so I have something to look forward to this summer.. I doubt the phone will last long enough to get ICS.
And something else I noticed. After I pick up the phone after it has been in the cold for a couple hours I will check SetCPU to see what my cpu temperature is at. I have never seen it below 18 C. Makes me wonder how accurate it actually is. If the phone is room temperature at idle, my CPU temp will be 39C. I bet it is actually only at 25 to 30 C.
I first saw this behavior when I took my Atrix camping in December. The phone was at 95% when I turned it off at night, and in the morning when I turned it on, it was at 40%. Another guy camping with us had an iPhone with a similar drop, but I don't know what his percentages were.
This weekend I was in Utah skiing and fully experienced what you are talking about...the phone was on the charger all night and it would only go to 70%. I pulled the battery and after the restart it was at 99%. This was in my heated hotel room and not outside.
I think the cold weather in general causes batteries to go crazy. Have a read:

I have the exact same thing happen to me as the OP and it has been happening for a long time even after i got a refurbished atrix so it is definatly something to do with the battery and not the phone itself. Damn cold Canadian winters

Hey we can't complain. Its very mild, well here anyways. And I love wasaga. Best may long weekend place to go!
And as far as the issue.. I have noticed it with my iPhone but once charged it was always go to 100 percent. Sucks that ours really messes up.
There is a wealth of information about lithium ion batteries if you look for it. They perform better in colder temperatures. They self-discharge slower in colder temperatures. Their lifecycle degrades slower in cold temperatures. The only real drawback is that the need to be warm to pass full current, so an extremely cold battery might not power your device properly until it warms slightly. If you let your battery discharge all the time it will severely decrease it's lifecycle, as lithium ion does not cope well with this.
NASA requires that their lithium ion batteries perform to -80C.
Remember that the batteries also have protection circuitry for safety. This may be set up in the Atrix batteries to discharge rapidly under certain circumstances.
I believe you can get a rapid discharge though if you go from an extreme cold temperature to a very warm temperature quickly, which could be the case if a phone sits in a truck all day at sub-zero temps, then you jump in, start it up, and start cranking the heat.
http://batteryuniversity.com/
Never had that happen.
Had the temp down to 12 C on the phone.
It did get a little hot during the summer months.

Living here you come to know that May long weekend is the WORST time of year because the majority of tourists are jerks! Fun to watch them get arrested though Right now its cold as hell. And yea it kinda of sucks, no matter what i do i can't make it read 100% it just goes up to that on its own sometimes. One time i had my battery last 3 hours sitting at 1%.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
I've had my atrix shut off on me while skiing a few times. Get home and plug it in and it has plenty of juice...just cant push out enough current to power the phone properly.
My phone sits in my work truck all day (since its not intrinsically safe) and even when the temp is well below zero it never fails to come off the vehicle dock without a full charge just that sometimes it thinks 40% or 70% is a full charge fixed it pretty much the same way as you guys described. Other than that in low temps the touch screen responsiveness is sometimes an issue and ocassionally the external sd card wont show up until it warms up. but overall a reliable phone considering the abuse it takes. wonderfull build quality from motorola as usual.
However... I think heat is a bigger issue as I managed to melt my first vehicle dock this summer when it hit 34C in Calgary. The suction cup and part of the stem remained on the windshield but luckly the phone fell to the floor in the shade.
Really surprised I haven't seen any pix of melted atrix on the internet unlike the S2 & Iphone4
